Recalls on the transmission
“My transmission needs replacing. My car is jerky when it shifts, does not accelerate smoothly, and puts me in danger on the highway/freeway when trying to accelerate as sometimes it won’t and stalls for a moment before getting going. There are currently 100 on back order which clearly means there is an issue with this specific transmission and I’m not the only person with this problem.”

Defect. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect, 2019-2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019-2023 Ranger, Mustang, 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition, Navigator, 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020-2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020-2024 Explorer, 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.

Risk. A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.

Defect. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Edge, 2020 Lincoln Nautilus and Ford Escape and 2021 Lincoln Corsair and Ford Bronco Sport vehicles. An inadequate amount of lubricant in the rear drive unit may cause seizure of the rear drive axle.

Risk. If the rear drive unit seizes, there may be a loss of drive and/or a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will check the rear drive unit lubricant level. Axles found to have lubricant at the minimum level will be filled to the full level. Axles found to be below the minimum lubricant fill level will be replaced, free of charge. This recall began March 12, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. The engine stalled and started smoking and has no lights to warn me of anything wrong. I was in the middle of a busy street. I had to tow it to the dealership I bought it from and they said the coolant was empty but there were no leaks and no warnings it was low. They said it was coolant intrusion. They said a egr valve and cooler were the problem part it was not covered under warranty. I had to pay 1265 to get it fixed. It's a known issue that should he a recall it's a part that causes safety issues as well as a newer car to be undrivable if not careful. No warning lights or anything is bs. I want this addressed as soon as possible. I could have been rear ended easily. Or my car broke down that I just paid 23000 for supposed to be a good working car. Seems like they did it on purpose.

In August 2025 I received emails regarding 3 recall alerts specific to my vin and I took screenshots of them that have the date and my vin along with the 4 recalls. They are 20S49, 21S02, and 20C19 and 25S72. I immediately called Ricart Ford to get this issue resolved. They placed me on hold, and the recalls were removed from my vin. These repairs have never been completed nor were they ever fixed. The Transmission on this vehicle is terrible, and they know it, but my guess is it would cost Ford too much many to repair all of these vehicles. I do have proof of these previous recalls and these are unresolved issues and a hazard. If Ford refuses to fix the transmission and rear drive axle I will obtain legal counsel as this is dangerous. I have also had this vehicle in for another repair that was included in these recalls. Charged $2500 told the dealership the car runs the same and they refused to return the calls.

The EGR cooler failed (TSB 20-2234) in my 2020 Ford Edge ST line on 9/26/26. I started my car and drove down my street and the car began smoking white/gray burning odor from exhausts with a sudden loss of power while driving on a public street. Leading up to this incident and during, no warning engine inicator lights or ANY notifications appeared. Temperature gauge remained at it's normal operating temp, dead center. The tow and independent mechanic confirmed there was no triggering of service lights/overheating warning. The mechanic noticed the loss of antifreeze without seeing a leak. He rulled out a cracked cylinder head and began further diagnostics. It threw a P0301 code as well as a mis-fire code on cyclinder #1. Also a code to cylinder#3. The mechanic's diagnosis was that was this was all a direct result due to the faulty Ford EGR Cooler and explained there was an TSB 20-2234 bulletin. Ford has explicitly acknowledged this engineering defect design flaw. I then found that the NHTSA has an active and elevated investigagion into this massive problem that caused my SUV to become non-drivable, needing a complete new engine-DP 26008. (SUV at 100K like other's) I have all service records as proof on the vehicle as well as the mechanics photos/paperwork. I own a 2020 Ford Edge ST-Line AWD with approximately 40,000 miles I am reporting a safety concern involving the Rear Drive Unit (RDU). My vehicle has developed a noticeable rumbling/binding sensation from the rear of the vehicle when making left or right turns, particularly at low speeds and during tight turns. I am concerned this may be related to Ford Safety Recall 21S02 (NHTSA Recall 21V-011), which involves the RDU and the possibility of insufficient lubricating oil that can cause the RDU to seize, potentially resulting in loss of mobility and loss of vehicle control. I brought this concern to a Ford dealership and was told that my VIN does not qualify for the recall. However, the symptoms I am experiencing are consistent with the RDU problem described in the recall. I am requesting that NHTSA review this situation and determine whether my vehicle should be included in the recall or whether Ford should be required to address this safety-related RDU failure. The vehicle has only approximately 40,000 miles. I am concerned about continuing to drive it if the RDU could potentially seize or cause a loss of vehicle control. I believe this issue warrants investigation because of the safety implications and the similarity between my symptoms and the defect described in Recall 21S02.

Leading up to this incident and during, there was no warning indicators or messages regarding the engine that appearerd. The temperature gauge remained at it's normal operating temperature, dead center. \n\nI had the car towed to a local mechanic. They ran diagnostic & codes on the vehicle and threw a P0301code. The mechanic noticed the loss of antifreeze without seeing a leak, smoke was coming from the car and the car had no \"service engine\" lights appear. He ruled out a cracked cylinder head and began further diagnostics on the EGR cooler. He found the coolant was leaking directly into the exhaust recirculation tracks and straight into cylinder #1. He explained due to Ford's faulty EGR cooler that cracked, draining all the antifreeze directly inside cylinder #1 without triggering a service light or overheating warning. I was told my vehicle would not be driveable and need a complete new engine or replacement. The mechanic notified me that there was a TSB (technical service bulliten) labeled \"TSB 20-2234\" where Ford has explicitly acknowledged this engineering defect in the 2019-2020 design flaw. The mechanic's diagnosis states that the engine failure was entirely a consequential result of the EGR defect, with a vehicle with regular service history.\n\nMy safety was at major risk, as well as the safety of other's. It can be repossessed for a crap shoot car. Before this I bought a 2016 Buick Enclave with also a broken torque converter issues. The engineers in car industry have failed. I would rather buy an older pre 2015 mechanics special for $1,200-$2,400, NOT $12,000-$18,800 for a POS drivetrain and transmission. A recall needs to be mandated for all these cars. I bought my Edge new in 2020. 3 years into owning the car had the transmission replaced on 8/23 due to mechanical/component failures. This was replaced under the original warranty of the car. The new transmission carried a 2 year unlimited warranty. I started having trouble again with the transmission August 1, 2026. 3 years after the new transmission. Took it to the Ford dealer to have them diagnose the problem. They could not pinpoint the exact issue so I was given a choice of replacing the valve body for $2,000. Not guaranteed to fix the problem. Or have them break the transmission down for $2100 and diagnose the problem. But this did not included reassembly. So I opted to get a 2nd opinion. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V011000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 94,000.

The vehicle hesitates, jumps, and then surges into gear when accelerating from low speed, which I believe makes it difficult and hazardous merging into traffic and other driving situations. Due to the hesitation it is unable to get up to speed very easily or quickly on busy interstate roads. The hesitation, jumping, and surging has gotten progressively worse and occurs at higher speeds now. It seems like it now does this during each gear shift. I am a longtime Ford owner I previously drove a 2001 F150 with little to no problems, it reached around 280,000 miles before it's trade in. I now have a 2020 Edge SEL 2.0 AWD and have really enjoyed this car until this problem started. It was bought in March of 2024 with 62k miles and it now has 92k. The problem initially only surfaced after the car had bene on and moving for a while and it was very subtle. I could not tell if it was engine or tranny and it was only barely noticeable. But the issue has remained and now occurs at all periods of time when being driven. I have had this vehicle inspected by multiple service centers now, both of which confirm the problem being that when shifting gears the internal parts of the transmission slip causing wear and extra heat generation, leading to the slipping and jumping. The transmission needs to either be rebuilt or replaced due to its faulty initial construction. I have been told by these mechanics that they have had to do this exact replace on many of this exact same model of car, and sim

The transmission has been serviced regularly. It is starting to jerk at lower speeds. I have had two auto mechanics from different shops and locations inspect the transmission. Both have found shaved metal in the transmission fluid. After a call to two different Ford dealerships, the auto mechanics were informed that it is a problem with these transmissions, but Ford has not issued a recall. If I have to replace the transmission, I will be contacting an attorney for assistance. There have been no warning lights or alarms indicating that there are problems with the transmission. Because there are no warning lights on the dashboard, it has been hard to diagnose the actual problem. Of course, I am approximately 6000 miles over the extended warranty. At the time I took the car to the shop, the mileage was 79,465.

Recently had the torque converter replaced for shuddering/shifting weird. Although there is no more shuddering, the car still does not seem to be shifting correctly. It hesitates between shifting gears and will then accelerate quickly. It was seen at the shop again today and they could not find any issues with it although I was told it will likely do it again for me and to let them know. There have not been an indicator lights.

I own a 2020 Ford Edge ST with approximately 62,460 miles. My vehicle has developed a loud noise coming from the rear differential, particularly when turning at low speeds. On July 6, 2026, I had the vehicle inspected by my independent mechanic, Kenny's Quick Service. Ford Motor Company has not inspected my vehicle. My mechanic documented the following: "Customer has a noise in the rear of vehicle. Checked vehicle and found noise in rear differential, when turning at low speeds. Checked fluid and fluid is not at proper level, differential could possibly come apart. Differential needs to be replaced." Based on this inspection, my mechanic advised me not to continue driving the vehicle because of the condition of the rear differential. I was advised that if the differential completely fails, the vehicle could stop moving and potentially create a dangerous situation, including the possibility of an accident. The vehicle is currently not being driven because of this safety concern. This issue concerns me because Ford previously issued Safety Recall 21S02 involving certain 2020-2021 Ford Edge vehicles and a low-fluid condition in the rear drive unit. According to the recall information, inadequate lubrication could cause the rear drive unit to seize, resulting in loss of drive and/or loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash. My vehicle is a 2020 Ford Edge ST, but my VIN is not included in the 21S02 recall. Despite not being included in the recall, my independent

While the vehicle is past its standard powertrain warranty, the failure is directly caused by an inherent manufacturing defect that Ford has internally acknowledged and documented. The dealership has quoted $9,000 for a full replacement, an unreasonable financial burden for a known, pre-existing mechanical flaw. The vehicle is experiencing severe shifting difficulties, specifically when attempting to transition the vehicle out of Park into any other gear. A formal diagnostic inspection conducted by the authorized Ford dealership confirmed a total transmission failure. Crucially, the dealership verified that the vehicle's symptoms and mechanical failures match Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 857 / 20-2190 (tel:857%20/%2020-2190). This internal Ford bulletin specifically addresses harsh engagements, shifting faults, and component degradation within this vehicle's transmission model. The dealership initially denied financial assistance because this vehicle’s specific VIN is not included in safety recall Campaign 20S47. I wish to clarify that I am not arguing a violatio

Over a dozen times, when my car sits outside in the sun on a hot day, my drivers side seat belt becomes locked in the retracted position. I am unable to use my seatbelt until my car cools down which takes appoximately 15-20 of my AC running on MAX AC. During this time, I either have to sit in my car and not drive or I have to drive without a seatbelt until it unlocks. This is a safety hazard because as a healthcare worker, I need to be able to get to my job when I need to be there. At any given time, I should be able to get into my vehicle and drive immediately with my seatbelt on. No warning lights come up on my dash when this occurs, I just can't put my seatbelt on. I brought the vehicle to the dealership and they said I need to replace my seatbelt for the price of ~$950. This is something that needs to be recalled and repaired at the cost of FORD. I have read numerous people online complaining of the exact same issue with their driver side seatbelt.

This is my wife’s car, I have already had to replace the evap hoses on this car twice due to faulty motor craft purge valves. I also replaced the charcoal canister before the second time I replaced the evap hoses so somewhere in the system there is a faulty part. Now at 80,000 miles my wife’s car is experiencing what many others are calling “shuddering”. How am I supposed to get anywhere in life when I just paid this car off and now I need a new transmission after I have done all services as specified by manufacturer.

2020 Ford Edge: questions buyers ask

Is the 2020 Ford Edge a good car?

It is not among the Edge years to avoid. Owners filed 328 complaints, against about 774 for a typical Edge year. The most common complaint is about the transmission (53%). In NHTSA crash tests it scored 5 stars overall.

What is the most common problem with the 2020 Ford Edge?

The transmission: 175 of the 328 complaints (53%) are about it. Owners most often say it jerks, lurches or bucks (31%), shudders or judders (28%) and sets off warning lights on the dash (27%). The typical report comes at 86,000 miles.

How many recalls does the 2020 Ford Edge have?

4 safety recalls on file with NHTSA, the most recent filed Jun 27, 2025. The largest, 20V575000, covered 620,246 vehicles. Recall repairs are free at a dealer; whether a specific car still has one open depends on its VIN.

At what mileage do 2020 Ford Edge problems start?

Half of the complaints that record an odometer reading came in before 68,200 miles. For the transmission the midpoint is 86,000 miles.

Has NHTSA investigated the 2020 Ford Edge?

Yes, once. RQ21002 ("Rearview Camera FMVSS 111 Noncompliance") was opened Aug 3, 2021 and is still open.

Are there service bulletins for the 2020 Ford Edge?

The manufacturer filed 162 technical service bulletins and other notices for it with NHTSA, most of them about the electrical system (44), the transmission (24) and the engine (18). They include a service campaign, 25N17, filed Mar 25, 2026. A bulletin is a repair instruction to dealers, not a recall: the fix is usually free only under warranty.

Reading this record

Complaint volume is well above typical for a single model year.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
