What to write about
- An error on the site. Include the page address and, if you have it, the NHTSA complaint or recall number. See the corrections policy for what we can and cannot fix.
- A privacy concern in a complaint narrative. We act on these before waiting for the source to be corrected.
- Press and research. Tell us what you are working on and what cut of the data you need.
- A manufacturer response. If you represent a manufacturer and want your position recorded alongside a defect record, write to us.
What we cannot help with
We are not NHTSA and we cannot act on their behalf. To file a complaint about your own vehicle, to check recalls on a specific VIN, or to correct a record at the source, go to nhtsa.gov. We also cannot advise on whether your individual car is safe to drive or diagnose a fault — that needs a qualified mechanic looking at the actual vehicle.
