What a VIN can and cannot tell you
The 17 characters encode how and where the car was built: manufacturer, model year, plant, body style, engine and restraint system. That is what vPIC returns, and it is free public data.
A VIN does not encode ownership, accident history, mileage or title status. Those live in commercial databases. What we add on top of the decode is the federal defect record for that build — what other owners of the same vehicle reported going wrong, and which recalls the manufacturer opened.
