“My 2013 Nissan rogue that we purchased in November keeps going into limp mode. It has happened several times. We’ve taken it to different shops and they all say it has a defective CVT transmission. It does not pull any codes and does not show that it’s overheating. It does make it dangerous for us and other cars on the road since it will happen on the freeway or as we are making a turn.”
Owner complaint, filed Jul 21, 2024
“Transmission problem out of no where. Acceleration changed with a high reving/whining noise, with no power on the gas pedal while turning left, putting me and my family at risk. There were no warning lights and no warning whatsoever. There has been no recall with this type of CVT transmission as there should as it is a HIGH RISK of DANGER on the road! I can't even believe that Nissan won't even address the issue.”

Just to reach a spot to safely stop myself and my passenger were fearing for our lives of getting struck by another vehicle. Upon researching it we found that this is typical of this make, model and year vehicle with no resolve from manufacturer. We find this completely unacceptable to have a known defect like this with safety at hand and no where to turn for help to remedy these vehicles.

I am writing to formally notify NHTSA of a serious safety incident involving my 2013 Nissan Rogue. My vehicle experienced an electrical fire while parked in my driveway following heavy snowstorms and road salt exposure. The vehicle was stationary at the time of the incident. My insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss. There were no warning lights or other symptoms prior to this incident. Researching this failure, I discovered NHTSA Safety Recall No. 15V032000, which states that moisture and road salt may reach the driver-side wiring harness connector, causing corrosion and potential electrical short circuits that can result in a vehicle fire. My incident aligns exactly with the circumstances described in this recall. A VIN search on NHTSA indicates no open recalls, however, a plethora of complaints have been filed by owners of this make and model and there is technical documentation confirming that corrosion-related electrical fires have occurred across this model and generation. This fire posed a serious risk of injury or death.

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The primary system affected appears to be the CVT transmission. Additionally, the engine computer (ECU) and electrical system (including battery, driver-side window, and turn signals) have shown repeated failures. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? During sudden loss of acceleration, the vehicle would not respond to the gas pedal for 10–20 seconds. This created dangerous situations when merging onto highways, crossing intersections, or making turns, as the car could not accelerate to avoid other vehicles or hazards. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Independent mechanics confirmed repeated ECU and MAF sensor failures. In February 2025, after the vehicle stalled at an intersection, multiple repairs were attempted (alternator, key reset, starter replacement), but the drivability issues persisted, confirming the problem. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle has been inspected by independent mechanics multiple times. Insurance roadside service documented over ten incidents where the vehicle would not start or stalled, including two towing events. The manufacturer has not inspected this specific vehicle. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other s

The transmission blew in 2023. I purchased the vehicle from Fox Ford (first mistake) and they sent me to the local Nissan dealer to fix it. It was covered under dealer warranty at the time. Fast forward to 1/30/26. My car is fully paid off and I’m driving home from work with my daughter in the backseat and, my worst nightmare occurred; the transmission blew again! The only reason I purchased this vehicle in the first place by the way is because a police officer ran a red light in 2020 and smucked us and didn’t have a single repercussion but, I digress. Anyway, I was able to pull into the median on the highway (luckily I was able to get there and not have the car die in the middle of the highway lane) and call 911 for support. My car was towed to Riverside where it still sits. I don’t have any updated paperwork because Nissan is indicating it’s not covered under warranty even though this is a known issue with Rogues and clearly already an immediate issue to me because it had been fixed previously in this particular vehicle. I would like this safety issue to be known as well as the fact that instead of the dealership and Nissan as a company caring or trying to help me in this process, they’ve had me go on a wild goose chase and the saga continues. I simply want the issue to be fixed and justice to be served so that hundreds of thousands of other families don’t have to suffer. Thank God the fire department got there when they did my car would have exploded into my house and neighbors house. When calling nissan to aware of problem they took zero accountability. My car had zero issues I took it regularly to get checked and things replaced. So sadden to have lost my car all of a sudden. There was times that my car would turn off for a second and turn back on. Request for Recall Coverage – 2013 Nissan Rogue Select Airbag Issue Dear Sir, I am the original owner of a 2013 Nissan Rogue Select. Recently, I became aware of a recall issued by Nissan North America for certain 2013–2014 Rogue Select vehicles due to an electrical short in the harness connector. This issue is caused by snow/water and salt seeping through the driver's side floor carpet, resulting in the flickering of the driver-side airbag warning light. My vehicle is experiencing the exact symptoms described in the recall notice. However, when I contacted both the Nissan dealership and Nissan North America, I was informed that my vehicle is not included in the affected recall list—even though it is the same model and year, and shows the exact defect identified in the recall. As a senior citizen, I am deeply concerned about the functionality of the airbag system in my vehicle. I rely on the safety features of my car, and I hope that, if ever needed, the airbag would deploy as intended. I respectfully hope that Nissan reevaluates my case and includes my vehicle in the recall repair program, as the issue clearly aligns with the known defect. Thank you for your attention and assistance in this matter. I look forward to your response.

The most recent occurence was on Saturday, June 7th when driving on the interstate and cruise control engaged at 73 mph when it cut off, dropped to just below 60 without warning and would not accelerate back when pedal completely depressed and then AC system started blowing HOT air and compressor would not kick back on. The Nissan rogue when warm weather hits the CVT transmission seems to get hot and then you lose propulsion. You can’t even put it in reverse and you cannot accelerate at all. You have to get out. Push the car wait 10 minutes and then hope to try it again. What works as we have to do a reset on a CVT system? Turn the ignition on by not turning the car on step on the break put it in reverse. Hit the accelerator three times slowly then wait five seconds put it in park. Turn it off to accept the changes and then two more times. Follow the same process for your car to turn on so you can drive off They are recommending that we should purchase a cooling system for a transmission fluid. This doesn’t make sense. Everybody’s complaining about this.

During a rear end accident on the highway when someone slammed on their brakes, I hit them at around 40 mph and slamming on my brakes to prevent it and the airbags did not deploy. The light was on the dashboard after the accident as if they did the deploy, the seatbelt blew out and will no longer retract. The front frame of the vehicle bent inwards at a 90 degrees angle puncturing the AC compressor, though the bumper has minimal damage. MA State Troopers noted that damage and allowed me to drive off since "the vehicle is not over heating or leaking", a body shop then said my car is totaled. My insurance company is investigating why/how the frame obtained extensive damage though the outer body is not as damaged. The vehicle has been parked since the accident and is available for inspection. My safety was at risk with a significant crash and the airbags not deploying, the seatbelt injured me, I am under medical treatment for injuries obtained after this accident. I have a police report, I have an insurance claim, I believe this needs to be further investigated. My vehicle was bought used in 2017 from a Nissan Dealership, it has never been in an accident with me as the owner, but my insurance company found an unreported accident from 2014 which could relate to the airbags not deploying and the frame bending so significantly from a rear end accident.

I was able to go home at low speed and this experience traumatized me. After that I consulted a mechanic who told me without joking that these cars have the worst transmission and I should contact Nissan. I contacted Nissan customer service to explain the problem, they told me no and gave me a case number (52135330). Purchased a 2013 Nissan Rogue with 95,000 miles on it back in the summer of 2021. currently has 102,00 miles. While travelling on the turnpike at 75 mph, the engine suddenly shut down and I began coasting until I stopped. Being in the left passing lane, I had to get over to the berm without getting hit by passing vehicles (2 nearly rear-ended me) because I was coasting slowly across two other lanes. Once stopped, the car would not restart. I started doing research as to why this happened. I needed a new part for the transmission per the Nissan Dealership. Nissan said I also needed an "engine cooler" for $1500 or it will happen again. This situation is a very well-known issue with this year of vehicle. It can happen with minimal mileage on it but usually when the tempos are in the 90's. Nissan knows about this because later models have these engine coolers installed. I could not afford $1500 and the extended warranty I purchased in 2021 did not cover it. This is a KNOWN issue and there needs to be a serious look at a Class-actions lawsuit. I paid for this part already and the car has been running fine.

KNOWN issue with engines overheating and the vehicle stopping. Purchased a 2014 Nissan Rogue with 95,000 miles on it back in the summer of 2021. It currently has 102,00 miles. Along with the purchase, I purchased the “extended” warranty for $2400 to cover the drive-train. All was running well until the temperatures starting climbing into the 90’s consistently. While travelling on the turnpike at 75 mph, the engine suddenly shut down and I began coasting until I stopped. I tried restarting the car but to no avail. I called a tow truck to tow me back home 35 miles. I started doing research as to why this happened. It’s two-sided. The good part was that it shut the engine down before it overheated. The bad part was that I did need a new part for the transmission per the Nissan Dealership. Good-bad there too. Though I had the extended warranty with Protective Asset Protection, I still had to pay the labor difference between what the Dealership charges and what the third-party would cover. That was a $400 difference which I discussed with the warranty company. They are in agreement with the Dealership on the amount of labor they would pay “per hour”. The difference is that “based on a national average”, they say the job would only take 9.7 hours X $150/hr. However, Nissan said it would take 12.3 to complete. The difference in time is where the $400 discrepancy comes in. Not sure how the warranty figures all that out, but that’s a scam in itself. I spoke to someone at Nissan Consum

The losing power issue has happened multiple times over the last 5 years and all that I can find online is that Nissan is aware and owners can buy something and have it added to the transmission....if we purchased the vehicle I think Nissan should at least be responsible for the issues with something that they are aware is an issue with the products they sell. I am now putting oil in the car every few weeks because of a leak that there is no explanation of how it happened and will cost a fortune to fix; and most recently I came out of work and when I went to get in my car the handle came off in my hand. I've researched and apparently this too is an issue with Nissan Rogues......Everytime I search for a recall there is nothing for the 2013 Rogue but there are for the ones years prior and after??? Whoever thinks that the perfect line came out in 2013 needs reevaluate their information!!!!

I have a 2013 Nissan Rogue that is heavily rusted underneath, which makes driving unsafe. Additionally, both the catalytic converter and the transmission are in poor condition. I think Japan should ban Nissan from making more bad cars like this car.

Transmission problem out of no where. I can't even believe that Nissan won't even address the issue. Do not buy this vehicle! Auto parts stores do not even carry parts for this car to replace transmission or torqure converter you have to go to NISSAN dealership(That should tell you SOMETHING) and they won't address the safety the issue nor do they care. PLEASE recall this transmission issue. It is a defect all the way Very unsafe. The cost to replace the transmission through the dealer is a lot of money just to have it be defective again down the road is NOT WORTH your safety.

I was driving on the interstate at right around 50-60mph, the day was sunny. I was in the middle lane on I275 and there was normal flow of traffic. I saw no debris. Then all of the sudden it sounded like an explosion and my car jolted. I knew something was very wrong and kept control of car. When the tire service man came he noted it the sidewall had blown out. The tread was good and no other areas affected. Other tires from this time were recalled just not the 16 size. I am concerned this tire is also affected with sidewall defects.

Dangerous and terrifying vehicle malfunction. I have done extensive research on the vehicle and I am beyond upset that this has not been resolved for everyone who owns any Nissan vehicle experiencing this problem. While driving either on the highway or local streets after approximately 10-15 minutes of travel time at any speed there is a loud whining noise while accelerating and total power loss. My 2013 Nissan Rogue SV has almost complete power loss while driving just a few minutes at any speeds and especially during or immediately following highway travel. While driving with my 3 year old son in the back, operating at the posted speed, the vehicle suddenly loses power and the ability to maintain or increase speed, the accelerator can be fully pressed and there is little to no response. We have nearly been involved in multiple accidents with semi trucks, other cars/suvs, and objects due to this issue. This has created a massive risk for us while driving daily routes to school and work. I have read hundreds out of thousands of forum threads, YouTube comments, and tweet, etc.. and as a whole every single post has the same issue for many Nissan models but little to none have been fixed or addressed. This issue is extremely hazardous and life threatening, I am terrified to have my child in this vehicle for any reason. I am extremely disappointed in the fact that there has not been a single positive response from Nissan to repair this problem and save the lives of the people and

A friend and I was driving out of town we drove approximately 3 hrs before vehicle stalled on us at a stop sign. The car had no power after driving 60-70 miles on highway. We exited access road & once we stopped at stop sign car acted as if it had no power/gas. Although foot was on pedal all the way to the floor. Transmission has been replaced a year ago. Vehicle did not want to go over 50 mph after car stalled. This is so dangerous we turned around & went home we did not feel safe or comfortable driving this vehicle out of town.

1 death reported in complaints filed with NHTSA.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
