Air Bags › Frontal15V483000
Filed Aug 4, 2015415,825 vehiclesVolkswagen Group of America, Inc.

Defect. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.

Risk. A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy. Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

The vehicle was brought to Bill Jacobs Volkswagen in Naperville, IL to have three open, mandatory federal campaigns and emissions modifications completed. The dealership is actively practicing illegal 'recall steering' by holding the vehicle hostage. The service department refuses to perform the free federal campaigns unless the owner first authorizes between $2,500 and $3,000 in unrelated diagnostic and repair fees out of pocket. The dealership falsely claims that the vehicle must be 'brough to specification' at the owners expense before a federal safety or emissions campaign can be completed, which directly violates federal regulations prohibiting dealerships from conditioning or delaying mandatory factory campaign work based on customer-paid services. Furthermore, dealership staff ignored explicit, repeated verbal warnings regarding an active Adblue countdown, shut the vehicle off, bricked the car via a 'No-Start' lockout inside their active service lane, and are now refusing to release the vehicle or keys without unapproved fees. The active check engine lights on the vehicle are directly tied to the faulty emissions and NOx sensor components that the open campaigns are legally mandated to replace. Addition customer-pay repairs have been explicitly declined, and the dealer is refusing to execute the safety and emissions campaigns.

My vehicle has an open Takata airbag recall with recall number 69E6. I have been placed on a waiting list at nearby dealerships for over 6 months. Each time I contact the dealerships, I am told to wait and call back in another month. No proactive communication has been provided and no remedy has been scheduled despite repeated follow-ups. The vehicle continues to display an airbag error light indicating an active safety hazard. The manufacturer has not provided a repair appointment, loaner vehicle, or any timeline for when the safety recall remedy will be available. This extended delay poses a serious risk given the known dangers of defective Takata airbags.

This means I will have waited over 9 years for a critical safety repair. I live in Texas, a region identified by NHTSA as high-risk for airbag explosion due to heat and humidity. We just purchased this vehicle for my daughter and when I called the manufacturer about scheduling to perform Recall # 24V834 they said the parts were on back order. I asked when they may have the parts and they claimed they didn't know, but the recall wasn't something I would have to worry about unless the air bag light came on. I asked what if in an accident and the air bag deploys would it cause harm and they said it wouldn't. I am not so sure considering the safety risk was an inflator explosion that may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or occupants resulting in serious injury or death. The manufacturer claimed that they type the recalls up in a scary way to scare you into getting the recall done. This is not enough for me when it comes to my young daughter or any passengers safety in the car. I contacted the VW dealer in Fate TX and that is the best place for us to get the recall done. I am requesting that something to be done to expedite this part or parts for my daughters vehicle to get this recall completed in a timely manner before something bad happens. Thank you!

In April 2025, my 2013 Volkswagen Passat developed serious issues: the steering wheel cover is lifted, horn and steering wheel controls stopped working, lights malfunctioned, and now the vehicle will not start. It also has an open Takata airbag recall with no parts available until “after june” I contacted the dealership by phone and Spoke to Lykoto at Molle dealership in Kansas City. they have refused to provide a tow or a loaner vehicle. Due to this I have not had an in-person inspection. I no longer feel safe driving the car. The Manufacturer has been notified of this via email due to their services being closed on the weekends but will contact over the phone Monday morning. Symptoms worsened over months and the no-start issue appeared recently. Will be taking to a private mechanic asap to have the no-start issue confirmed.

2013 Volkswagen Passat: questions buyers ask

Is the 2013 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Going by the federal record, it is one of the Passat years to avoid: owners filed 749 complaints, 4.5 times as many as a typical Passat year. The most common complaint is about the airbags (50%). In NHTSA crash tests it scored 5 stars overall.

What is the most common problem with the 2013 Volkswagen Passat?

The airbags: 374 of the 749 complaints (50%) are about it. Owners most often say it shows an airbag warning light (19%) and sets off warning lights on the dash (15%). The typical report comes at 58,600 miles.

How many recalls does the 2013 Volkswagen Passat have?

9 safety recalls on file with NHTSA, the most recent filed Oct 30, 2024. The largest, 19V389000, covered 662,185 vehicles. Recall repairs are free at a dealer; whether a specific car still has one open depends on its VIN.

At what mileage do 2013 Volkswagen Passat problems start?

Half of the complaints that record an odometer reading came in before 51,000 miles. For the airbags the midpoint is 58,600 miles.

Has NHTSA investigated the 2013 Volkswagen Passat?

Yes, 3 times. The latest, EA18003 ("Air Bag Clockspring Failure"), was opened Apr 18, 2018 and is still open.

Are there service bulletins for the 2013 Volkswagen Passat?

The manufacturer filed 1,595 technical service bulletins and other notices for it with NHTSA, most of them about the engine (320), the electrical system (241) and the transmission (89). They include a warranty extension, VWP-18-11, filed Apr 27, 2023. A bulletin is a repair instruction to dealers, not a recall: the fix is usually free only under warranty.

Reading this record

2 deaths reported in complaints filed with NHTSA.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
