Defect. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

Risk. If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly with an improved one, free of charge. Owners of specific models were notified that remedy parts were available starting January 21, 2021. Owners of other models will be notified as remedy parts become available. Remedy parts should be available for all affected vehicles by late March 2021. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 20V-012. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA02. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA01.

Toyota also removed the 2018-2019 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser and 2018-2019 Lexus GX 460 and LX 570 and 2019 NX300 from inclusion in this recall. On March 19, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include 2015 Lexus GS350 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

Defect. Gulf States Toyota (GST) is recalling certain 2019 C-HR, 4Runner, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Prius, RAV4, Sequoia, Tacoma, Sienna, Tundra and Yaris vehicles. The text on the load capacity label may become illegible. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk. If the driver cannot read the label, they may unknowingly overload the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. GST will notify owners, and dealers will provide corrected load carrying capacity modification labels, free of charge. The recall began May 24, 2019. Owners may contact GST customer service at 1-800-444-1074. GST's number for this recall is 19R1.

TT: Some 2018-2020 model year UA80/UB80 transmission equipped models may experience a leak from the Transmission Side Cover. This issue is currently under investigation. Vehicles are being sought regardless of months in service or mileage. Only seeking vehicles with leaking transmissions with no other signs of damage to the side cover.

The component that failed was the transmission. My safety was at risk because I was going uphill and the engine surged then the transmission seized, almost causing a rear-end incident with my family in the car. The dealer confirmed that the transmission has failed. No incident happened so only the dealer needs to be involved at this time. There were no warning lamps indicating to me that the transmission failed. Upon discovering that the transmission was not downshifting (based on the engine not downshifting uphill), I put the car into manual mode to determine if I could manually shift down or not, it would not downshift. Attempting to downshift to gears 4, 3, 2, or 1 was not possible, the lowest gear was gear 5 and the engine had no torque to get up the hill that it was seized on. The 2019 Toyota Highlander was serviced for the automatic transmission fluid at 100K miles and failed at about 120,450 miles.

My transmission failed while driving. The gears began to stick and then I lost all driving capability while on a state highway.

The transmission has been making a whining noise for a little while now. After having it diagnosed by Toyota, the entire transmission has to be replaced. According to multiple reports on the internet, the 8 speed transmission in the 2017 to 2026 model will fail prematurely do to defective components. Toyota has even replaced multiple model year transmissions under a specific TSB but has not included later model years. I know have to spend $10,500 to replace the transmission at Toyota.

Transmission is failing and accelerating past 40mpg produces very loud sound that seems it could break any moment. It is available for inspection. Safety is compromised as it could experience failure and abruptly lose ability to accelerate. Problem has been confirmed by independent service center who has also contacted Toyota Dealership regarding possible replacement and about the issue at hand. Has not yet been inspected by manufacturer, police, or insurance rep. No warnings and it first occurred June 2026 of this year. Contacted Toyota Brand Engagement Center and denied any assistance.

I purchased this Toyota Highlander two years ago, and I am extremely disappointed and frustrated that it now requires a transmission replacement costing approximately $10,000. I understand that vehicles can require maintenance and repairs, but a major mechanical failure of this magnitude is a significant financial burden. I have reached out multiple times seeking assistance and a reasonable resolution, but I have been unable to get anyone to take responsibility or offer meaningful help. I should not be left to shoulder such an enormous expense without a fair review of the circumstances. I am filing this complaint because I believe this matter deserves further investigation and I am requesting assistance in reaching a fair resolution.

I was on interstate 75 and the transmission went out. I had to be towed home (over 100 miles). I pulled into a rest area and when I went to leave, I pulled out and the engine RPM's went real high and the car would not go over 20 MPH. I was in the way of semi-trucks as I tried to get back to a parking spot at the rest area. Thankfully This did not happen while driving. After getting to the repair shop they could not even steer the car. I want Toyota to help me with the cost of the repair. This car only has 85,000 miles on it and it is a 2019. It should be good for at least 200,000 miles. I feel very fortunate that I was not actually on the highway when this happened.

My husband was driving my car out of town, and while driving approximately 70 mph, my car stopped going. When he pressed the gas pedal, the engine revved, but did not move forward. He had to coast down the interstate and pull over on the side of the road. He said he almost got tear ended by a semi-truck. I called roadside assistance through my insurance company and it took them 2.5 hours to get to us. We had to have it towed about 70 miles to a shop and pay $184.00. The body shop we towed it to said it is the transmission. He said he knew it to be a common issue with 2019 Toyota Highlanders. I looked it up online and found several instances of similar stories. There was no warning.

I started hearing a faint sound and initially thought it was odd, but certainly sounded different and could not really tell where it was coming from. Upon taking it to the dealer for diagnosis, I learned that the transmission will need full replacement. I also took it to an independent shop to get a second opinion and much to my dismay, they confirmed the same.

The vehicle began making a whining noise several months ago. After doing some research this vehicle has the UA80 transaxle that has a known defect that produces the whining noise and eventual damage. There are other years of this vehicle that are subject to a recall/repair for this same transaxle issue, but not for the 2019 even though it's the same transaxle with the same assembly defect. This is a known issue by the manufacturer. The end result without repair will be a transaxle failure while in gear / loss of propulsion. This vehicle has not been taken to a dealer for inspection yet. If a request for inspection is made, the vehicle can be made available. Also, no warning lamps or messages gave any early indication of an issue, only a whining noise was noticed.

Car experiences pulling, squealing, and eventually just completely stopped in the middle of the road. Car is 7 years old w/ ~90k miles and was serviced at the dealership until the most recent inspection. Towed to nearest shop and transmission is shot. Similar to every other complaint listed online. Now being quoted ~$9k to repair/replace on a car worth ~$20k.

I am filing this complaint regarding a transmission failure in my 2019 Toyota Highlander at approximately 150,000 miles that resulted in a complete loss of propulsion while driving on the highway. My husband was driving to work toward River Forest, Illinois, when he initially noticed that the vehicle would not accelerate beyond approximately 60 mph. After attending practice, he decided to return home rather than continue to the office because of the vehicle’s performance. While driving home on the highway, the vehicle progressively lost the ability to maintain speed. Despite traveling at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle slowed to approximately 30 mph, then 20 mph, and eventually lost propulsion completely. This created a serious safety concern because the vehicle could no longer maintain highway speeds or continue driving normally, potentially exposing the driver and surrounding motorists to a collision. The vehicle was subsequently taken to an independent repair facility for evaluation, and a transmission failure is suspected. The estimated cost to replace the transmission is approximately $5,000 to $10,000. I contacted Toyota Corporate to report this failure and request assistance. Although a case number was assigned, Toyota representatives informed me that they would not escalate the concern without historical maintenance documentation. My car is stalling and stopping while driving both slow speeds and high speeds and all displays are going off, it may restart after several attempts, it seems a serious safety problems, however my VIN is not part of original Toyota Fuel pump recall, however it seems my issue is also related to Fuel pump mall functions

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, a loud grinding and humming sound was heard intermittently from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a transmission failure and warned that the transmission could experience a complete failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic contacted the manufacturer, who confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall. While traveling east on [XXX] in [XXX] on Monday, XXX, the sunroof of my Toyota Highlander 2019 spontaneously shattered. There were four occupants in the car and we all heard what sounded like a gunshot or explosion. There were a few shards of glass that hit my daughter who was in the front passenger seat in the head and small pieces of glass throughout the car. I did not pull over on highway [XXX] because it is a one lane highway with minimal room on the shoulder. I immediately closed the sunshade and put my hazards on and drove about a quarter mile exited safely, pulled onto a side road, and called the police in [XXX]. There were a few pieces of glass that were flying off of the car and towards the car behind us, however, I believe they stayed back a bit because we did suddenly put our hazards on, and I don’t feel that their cars were impacted by the flying glass. No one in the car was physically injured however we were all shaken up. I did call the police because I wasn’t sure what to do and I had three [XXX] kids in the car with me and I needed to know we were safe where we were pulled over. At that time, I also called my husband and he contacted our insurance company to discuss options for repair and how to get three hours home with the car. We chose not to use roadside assistance. The officer followed us a short distance to ensure the glass was not flying out to cars behind us and we were able to safely drive. We drove to the local Walmart where we taped up the sunroof

Transmission had problems with shifting gears - can hear a banging noise while shifting gears. Reported to dealer and they indicated diagnostics report showed purge valve issues. Nothing showing transmission errors. 9/20/26 significant transmission Issues occurring with eco mode turning on and off problems with shifting and no power with RPM up to 5 let off gas pedal and eco shift then transmission accelerated. Problem repeated for 40 miles on Interstate 95 with family and animals. Engine lights finally come on stating AWD error traction control On and off visit dealer an 1/8 mile from Haley Toyota Richmond VA - $280 diagnostics show transmission failure, needs to be replaced for $12000 at 87K miles warranty expired no assistance offered and "0" transmissions available throughout the United States- - $470 out of pocket tow truck to get it to a local transmission shop in Waldorf MD 25 miles from home. Definitely a safety issue when there is no acceleration on a major highway and now error codes to indicate there is a major transmission problem!

While driving along, the car suddenly begun not too shift in the middle of an intersection. Fortunately for me, this occurred in the middle of the night when there were not many cars around, otherwise serious injury would likely have occurred since it was in a busy area. I had the car towed to an independent shop first who indicated that the problem was likely a transmission failure. I subsequently had it towed to the Toyota Dealership in Wilkes-Barre PA (Motor World), who confirmed it was complete failure of the transmission, with metallic particles circulating throughout its entirety. According to Toyota, the transmission fluid in this type of car is meant to last the life of the vehicle and regular flushes should not be required. Certainly this appears to not be the case. There were no warnings of obvious symptoms that I could appreciate as a lay person. Toyota is quoting me close to $9000 for the transmission replacement, and I am also currently incurring considerable expense from rental vehicles while I figure out the outcome.

The vehicle has a loud whining noise coming from the front of the car. The noise is only heard when I am pressing the accelerator but once I let off it goes away. I took the car into the dealership for inspection and was told it was the transmission that needs to be replaced. Toyota is refusing to assist with the repair because it is out of warranty. Even though they know this is a known issue.

I was driving on the highway and the car stopped allowing me to accelerate which almost caused major issues with an accident. I was luckily able to pull off and coast to a safe area to stop. No warning lights ever came on. It appears to be a transmission failure. I’m very lucky it didn’t occur 5 minutes prior. Currently at dealership for inspection.

Vehicle engine is running rough and threatened to stall in traffic due to a failed low-pressure fuel pump. This model year is under a major fuel pump recall, but my VIN was excluded. The gauge isn't reading correctly either

The transmission developed a faint whining noise, first noticed September 2026 around 84,000 miles, along with some hesitation during operation. A Toyota dealer diagnosed internal bearing failure inside the transmission and recommended full replacement. An independent shop also quoted full replacement. Estimates ranged $8,500–$10,000. Vehicle not yet repaired; available for inspection. Safety risk: the noise is faint enough that a driver could reasonably dismiss it as imagined, unlike a loud noise or dashboard warning. No warning lamps or messages appeared at any point. This absence of a clear warning means affected drivers may keep driving unaware a component is failing internally. The vehicle also experienced hesitation during operation, which could affect safe acceleration, for example when merging into traffic. Based on documented failures of this transmission design in other vehicles, continued driving risks progression to slipping or sudden loss of motive power, with less chance a driver recognizes the need to stop before that happens. Inspected by a Toyota dealership and an independent repair shop; not inspected by manufacturer corporate, police, or insurance.

2019 Toyota Highlander XLE, 137K miles. Always maintained, never any issues whatsoever, family loved our 'forever' car, UNTIL the dreaded whining noise began underneath the front floorboard. No warning, no indication, just started while driving on the highway and increasingly became louder over the two additional months I drove it. Quick online search indicates this is a very common issue. Brought to a local dealership in Southern NH, where it was quickly diagnosed as a failing transmission in need of replacement. No warranty, out of pocket cost approx. $8K. Just so happened they had a spare, remanufactured transmission already in house, since this was becoming a 'common issue'. They even had what sounded like a dedicated technician that did at least one replacement a week and had the repair time down to a science. No other warning signs, no software codes, no jerking or slipping while driving, just the noise that increased as the gas pedal was pressed. Well known issue, yet no recall for the 2019 year. Toyota forums indicate the replacement transmissions fail as well after accumulating some miles, which might explain why they only offered me a 1-yr warranty if I had replaced mine. It's for this reason I traded in this Highlander vehicle, as this vehicle was no longer safe or suitable for any long distance family driving. Stated hearing a whining noise when accelerating. Research shows this is a known issue witg 8 speed transmission especially Around 60k-80k miles.

When I accelerate my car makes a whining noise. I had the transmission flushed and it did not help. My Toyota dealership said to drive it until it gets worse.

About 2 months ago we noticed that the driver side seat has a rubture on the right side of the seat and the metal plate has a sharp side which is cutting the cloth of the seat plus the seat has begin to be to saggy and loose

My 2019 Highlander was driving totally normal, when all of a sudden the transmission started slipping and then would no longer accelerate. I was on a windy back road in Alaska with no service, so after letting it sit for a bit I tried to drive it again. It then drove maybe 1/2 more miles before slipping completely and no longer accelerating. No check engine lights came up. I got it towed to my house where a mechanic took a quick scan and said there was a number of transmission codes popping up.

About two weeks ago I was driving and the car made a whinny noise and felt like it was shaking and slipping out of no where so I stop in a complex to check it out when I went to reverse the car wouldn’t move forward or backwards I had to turn off and on only to have the car not go pass 20 miles havnt been able to drive it since I got two different check where they say it’s the transmission that the UA80E has that same issue but since there no recall Toyota says it’s not their problem

UA80 Transmission failure. Was driving on highway when the transmission failed and lost power to the vehicle. Car was taken to Sunshine Toyota (Batte Creek MI) in 2022 and the transmission was recommended to be replaced due to a defect at 67,000 miles. The car was then sold off, and I acquired it through another dealer.

The transmission (power train) in this vehicle shows symptoms of a known defect in Toyota's UA80 8-speed. Since approximately (Aug 2026/~70k mileage), it has produced shining/grinding noised at increasing speed. these symptoms match failure patterns described in Toyota's own Tech Service Bulletin for transmission, which have led to documented cases of sudden power loss, gear slippage, and complete failure in other owners of this and related models. I have not yet experienced complete loss of propulsion, but given the documented failure patterns, there is a foreseeable risk this could occur without warning while driving, including traffic or while merging, creating a safety hazard. I took the vehicle to Toyota of Manchester, NH dealership on [XXX] and requested repair given the known TSB coverage. Toyota denied repair assistance, citing lack of dealer service records, despite transmission fluid being a lifetime-fill component unrelated to this failure mode. I am filing this proactively due to the documented risk of sudden failure, and because Toyota denied to address a known, symptomatic defect before it progresses and declined to take responsibility for the repairs or repair assistance for this defect. The UA80 8-speed automatic transmission failed at 87,896 miles. Symptoms began as slipping in 1st and 2nd gears and harsh jerking when accelerating from a stop, with the engine revving while the vehicle failed to move. This is a loss of motive power that can occur without warning in traffic. On 8/31/2026 a Toyota dealer diagnosed a failed transaxle requiring complete replacement, with a whine traced to the differential inside the transmission, and quoted $11,126.81. This matches the failure mode in Toyota TSB T-SB-0160-18, which Toyota addressed for some 2017-2018 VINs under Customer Support Program ZJC. My 2019 has the same UA80 unit but falls outside that program. The replacement part is backordered with no ETA per Toyota's own case portal. The vehicle is maintained on schedule and available for inspection. Toyota declined goodwill assistance and refused to provide the denial in writing.

The component that malfunctioned is the vehicle’s automatic transmission. The transmission developed a progressively worsening humming/whining noise during acceleration. The transmission is no longer available for inspection because the vehicle has been taken to an independent transmission repair shop for diagnosis and repair. My 2019 Toyota Highlander AWD vehicle started making a whining noise around 85,000 miles. This high pitched whining sound occurred while accelerating and became louder and louder with time. I researched the issue and found out that the same issue had occurred on 2018 Highlanders and Toyota issued a Customer Service Bulletin T-SB-0160-18, which addressed the repair and replacement of these UA80 transmissions regardless if the warranty had expired or not. After visiting my local Toyota dealer, they confirmed that the high pitch whine was the final drive noise with the UA80 transmission and the exact same issue as the 2018 Highlander. If left unchecked, my transmission would eventually fail. Since my 2019 Highlander is not part of any recall, and at the moment, not part of the Customer Service Bulletin T-SB-0160-18, I was left to take care of the repair on my own. I contacted Toyota Corporate and requested financial assistance on the the approximate $7,000 charge to replace my transmission. Toyota told me that my car was not under warranty, but they could pay for my 50% of my cost to replace my transmission. I had to pay $3,535 (half of the total cost) to repair my transmission. Since this issue is a manufactured flaw with the assembly of the transmission, I believe the entire repair should be covered 100% by Toyota; therefore, a recall should be issued or the 2019 Highlanders should also be included in the Customer Service Bulletin T-SB-0160-18.

UA8OF transmission went. Vehicle was making whining noise when purchased and was told was normal. Driving the car as normal when traveling through intersection when car would not drive.

The back passenger door (passenger side) will not unlock when using the remote or the button on the front door panels. The only way to open the door is to push the button manually on the car door. The child lock is NOT ON!!! I called the Toyota dealer in my town and they said there are no recalls and it would be $200 to do a diagnostic test on it. This is not ok. To not be able to unlock the door from the remote or the front door panel is not acceptable.

My 2019 Toyota Highlander has the same UA80 transmission that Toyota was required to fix under CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAM ZJC, which covers 2017-2018, the transmission has the same whining noise and shifting issues. Toyota must accept responsibility for their manufacturing error where the washer tab was not bent properly, allowing a nut to loosen leading to the whining noise. I expect the NHTS to require them to cover their 2019's as well, as a consumer we are getting screwed here.

In April of 2026 started hearing a whining noise in the engine of my 2019 Toyota Highlander. The vehicle has 110471 miles. Have had it checked at the dealership twice and a mechanic twice. All have said the transmission is going out. I have had the transmission fluid replaced, but it did not help. Apparently, Toyota knew about this problem and still sold the car. I am unable to drive car because I am afraid it is going to break down. The dealership said they could replace the transmission for 8762.64 dollars. Toyota has since stopped making UA80 eight speed auto transmission.

I have a 2019 Highlander XLE AWD that had 85000 miles when the transmission started whining. It got worse pretty quickly so iI took it to a transmission shop. They rebuilt it for $6700.00. I drove it for another 9-10 thousand miles and the whine is back. I'm not sinking another $6700.00 into another transmission. I've talked to several transmission shops and I'm being told there isn't a true fix. Rebuild it and it will come back, guaranteed. What recourse do I have? The car only has 102,000 miles which is typically nothing for a Toyota. But it all started at 85000. Something needs to be done. I see programs for the 2017 and 2018 models but not the 2019. It's the same transmission. The issues crop up after the vehicle has gone out of warranty.

Because this symptom primarily occurred during low ambient temperatures, I initially attributed it to the cold weather. The mileage on this vehicle was around 50k miles. *Spring 2024: I contacted the dealership to report the noise. I was advised that the issue was likely related to a worn belt. Subsequent inspection, however, proved this diagnosis to be incorrect, and the root cause of the noise remained unresolved. *Fall 2024: The engine buzzing returned. Concurrently, a severe driveability issue emerged. On multiple occasions after shifting from Park to Drive, the vehicle failed to engage the gear properly, behaving as though it were in Neutral and preventing any acceleration. This would occur while driving and stopped at redlights, which posed a major safety concern as I was transporting my newborn and young child with me. * February 2025: The vehicle became entirely inoperable. Unfortunately, this failure occurred around 62k miles, AFTER my 60k mile warranty expired, (which i was unaware of). The car is was a 2019 Toyota Highlander with approximately 125,000 miles. White Smoke started appearing in the exhaust. Quickly after that, the check engine light appeared and started blinking, meaning the engine was misfiring. We brought to the dealership, and they found that cylinder 4 of the engine was damaged (scoring on the inside of the cylinder wall). The engine was releasing metal particles in the oil. Further, the cylinder would not hold oil or coolant pressure, and was burning both oil and coolant. The only fix was to replace or rebuild the engine.

I have the high pitch whine coming from transmission. It is a known issue with Toyota but they refuse to look into it since my VIN falls outside their recall list. This is the same transmission as previous years and has the exact same issues. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately.

Since October 2025 I have had intermittent issues where the car battery suddenly loses power when driving. I have had to pull over on highway medians and shoulders. A few seconds before it loses power, multiple dash alerts go off: pre-collision malfunction, hybrid system malfunction, check engine. It has been seen now by multiple mechanics including Toyota dealership. It is now on its third battery. Replaced yesterday and lost power on highway today. Please investigate this issue.

The dealership recommended transmission fluid exchange services for my 2019 Highlander SE after the recommended mileage for this service. I wasn’t able to get this service completed because of timing, however later on the service was completed and after three weeks the vehicle started jerking upon acceleration. Took the Benchley back to the mechanic to diagnose the problem. Per the diagnostic test the issue was determined by this code transmission P0745-7F | Pressure Control Solenoid "A" Actuator Stuck Off - Pending DTC.
