On September 17, 2026, at approximately 22,861 miles, the 6.2L L87 V8 engine in my 2024 GMC Yukon XL suffered a sudden loss of propulsion and was subsequently confirmed by an authorized GMC dealer to be seized and require complete replacement. I was entering northbound I-75 from the Mt. Paran Road entrance in Atlanta, GA with two of my children in the vehicle. This entrance has an extended acceleration ramp where vehicles accelerate to interstate merging speed. While accelerating, the engine briefly stuttered and then the vehicle stopped producing power when I pressed the accelerator. I was unable to continue accelerating and moved onto the limited shoulder. Other vehicles continued accelerating toward I-75 and passed immediately adjacent to us at significant speed. My children and I remained stranded there for approximately two hours waiting for a tow. The vehicle was towed to an authorized GMC dealer, which confirmed the engine is seized and requires complete replacement. The vehicle and failed engine are currently at the dealer and available for inspection. This vehicle was previously subject to NHTSA Recall 25V-274 / GM N252494000 for L87 engine failure and loss of propulsion. An authorized GMC dealer completed the recall procedure on November 3, 2025. The engine was not replaced; it passed the prescribed inspection and received the higher-viscosity-oil remedy. Despite completion of the recall procedure, the engine subsequently experienced the loss-of-propulsion condition

Update to original claim filed 11760897. Dealership inspected on 9/9/2026 and found engine damage severe enough to warrant a complete replacement. Catastrophic damage. Unspecified what caused the damage, but service advisor made me aware of a deep gash along the cylinder wall after removing the cylinder heads, unspecified cylinder. Likely from cylinder 3 where the code was being displayed- P0303. Vehicle was in the beginning stages of an oil consumption test and had a history of oil loss without any visible leaks. Add oil light came on 650 miles after oil change. Oil was likely being burnt up through combustion due to damaged cylinder wall. Unknown time for new engine to be installed. Estimated backlog 600 engines, could be regionally or nationally. Replacing engine at 29,800 miles, however vehicle has been having these issues much longer- closer to 20,000 miles. I want consumers to be aware this vehicle was not part of the national recall. Vehicle was manufactured in July 2024, two months past the recall date established for these GM engines.

On XXX, while traveling from [XXX] to [XXX] on [XXX], the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration while traveling at 65mph on a 2 lane HWY, displayed a Low Oil Pressure warning, developed loud knocking and ticking noises, and became inoperable. We were forced to drift to a stop in an isolated desert location after passing a highway sign stating “Next Gas Station 94 Miles.” Our family of four remained stranded for approximately 5½ hours in temperatures exceeding 100°F. During that time, we spent more than three hours working with OnStar, but no workable transportation or towing solution was provided. Ultimately, my mother drove approximately five hours from [XXX] to retrieve our family, and we arranged and paid for commercial towing ourselves. As the hours passed, our focus shifted from transportation to protecting our children from prolonged exposure to extreme heat. This concern was heightened because our youngest son has an underlying medical condition that affects his ability to regulate body temperature and has a single functioning kidney, increasing concerns about dehydration. Following delivery to Michael Hohl GMC in [XXX], the dealership documented the following findings: “Metal in oil.” “Metal bypassed oil filter.” “Need to replace engine.” We appreciate the professionalism of the dealership throughout this process. Our request is not directed at the

On August 20, 2026, while driving my 2024 GMC Yukon XL Denali equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine at approximately 70 mph on the interstate, the vehicle experienced a sudden and complete loss of motive power without adequate warning. The vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral and would no longer accelerate or maintain highway speed. This occurred in active interstate traffic and almost resulted in a serious accident as I attempted to maneuver the vehicle out of the flow of traffic. The engine would not restart, and the vehicle had to be towed to a GMC dealership. The GMC dealership subsequently diagnosed that the engine had locked up and determined that the engine requires complete replacement. This failure created an immediate and significant safety hazard for me, my family, and surrounding motorists. My vehicle is affected by the 6.2L engine recall, and I am extremely concerned about the safety and reliability of the proposed replacement engine. I have become aware of reports from other owners alleging failures involving replacement engines as well, including similar sudden losses of propulsion. I am concerned that replacing the engine may not adequately address the underlying safety risk if replacement engines are experiencing similar failures. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate not only the original engine failure, but also whether replacement engines used as a remedy are adequately correcting the defect. A sudden engine lockup and complete loss of propulsion at inter

My vehicle "passed" the engine recall only to have the engine blow at 33,000 miles. My vehicle was at the dealership for 52 days most of the time was spent waiting for the new engine. Dealership was amazing, GMC however is the worst. My new engine has about 1,000 miles on it and it stutters occasionally when the auto start turns on.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), the contact was informed that the vehicle passed the inspection and no repair was needed. However, the vehicle experienced engine failure approximately seven months later. While driving 50 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The driver pulled over, restarted the vehicle, and resumed normal driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer the following morning, where the Electronic Control Module was replaced under warranty; however, the failure recurred while driving 70 MPH three weeks later. No warning light was illuminated. The driver pulled over, restarted the vehicle, and resumed driving; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 40 MPH and shut off. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine, radiator and seal kit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact was concerned that the recall remedy failed to prevent the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a buyback was requested, but the request was denied, and the contact was referred to the dealer for additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 27,800.

We're in the waiting period for our 3rd engine. 1st engine failure, while driving on interstate at 70+ MPH, engine stopped running, causing a very unsafe condition for family and surrounding vehicles. Engine failure 2 days later, towed to dealership for inspection, replacement engine was installed ~4 weeks later. 2nd engine failure, while driving on interstate at 75+ MPH, engine seemed underpowered and would rev upwards of 6000+RPMs, not exactly unsafe, but not usual operating conditions either. Returned to dealer, upon inspection, total engine replacement was recommended.

I perform all maintenance on my vehicles, I have previously been a ASE Certified Master Technician, so I know engines and vehicles very well. Vehicle is outside of current engine recall window due to the engine build date being July 15, 2024. Engine was over maintained, oil and oil filter changed 6 times in 17,732 miles, first oil and filter change performed at 544 miles, when 5W30 oil was put in engine, installed a magnetic drain plug and installed Filter Mags on oil filter. Ran 5W30 oil for 2 oil changes, then moved to 0W40 oil. Oil analysis performed for each oil change. Results were looking acceptable up until the next to last oil change at 13,801 miles. Changed engine oil and filter on 6/12/2026 @17,732 miles. Found a heavy build up of metal particles on the magnetic drain plug and when oil filter was cut open there was a heavy build up of metal particles where the Filter Mags were located and the filter element had fine metal particles in entire engine oil filter element. The engine has made no noise and is still running, but based on the evidence the engine is currently failing and if I would have continued to drive it, the engine would likely lock up on the highway. CLEARLY GM DID NOT solve the crankshaft problem July 1, 2024 and CLEARLY using a higher viscosity oil like 0W40 will not keep these engines from failing. If I would have continued to drive the vehicle and if I would have not changed oil and found metal in the oil, this engine would have absolutely failed o

2024 Engine failed while moving at 70mph out of state. De-accelerated rapid as I was changing lanes and was almost hit by two vehicles. Once of the interstate, I made it to the shoulder of an exit ramp that was a blind spot. Cars exiting to this ramp almost always had to veer to keep from hitting me. I purchased this vehicle in October 2024, never knew anything about a recall, was never disclosed to me about recalls. To this day, if I enter my VIN, there is no recall and I have never received any communication stating this vehicle was on recall. I complained to the dealer twice about unusual noise from vehicle, which they dismissed. I took it back to the dealer because my oil light indicated I was "low", this oil is too low, my concern was a leak. Took into GMC dealer, they stated we did not see any leak. Now this. Problem, GA law states in order to qualify for buyback, 24,000 miles or under 2 years. Well, I have 24,986...this automatically disqualifies me. SMH The options I was given are all a NO WIN for me! I was almost killed on the interstate, not to mention the level of stress and issues this car nightmare has caused me. $100k vehicle and I still owe 87K

This is abnormal and indicative of excessive oil consumption. I returned to Jim Ellis, who performed a fresh oil change and placed my vehicle on a 6,000-mile oil consumption test — an acknowledgment that an oil consumption problem exists. 5. No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.
Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
