I have a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited that has a "Service 4WD" issue. I have had the vehicle diagnosed and have a PTU failure of C14A7 which coincides with a recall 25V-011. The symptoms and failure mode I have mirrors the recall but yet, my VIN is excluded. I have met with a Jeep Service Department Manager and have had numerous calls with Stellantis Customer Care to try to understand why my vehicle is not part of the recall but am getting nowhere. I am told by Stellantis there is nobody I can talk to if I am not part of the recall and there is no appeal process. An independent shop believes strongly my vehicle should be included with the recall so I will continue to attempt to find someone within Stellantis that I can appeal the omission. I saw a comment that NHTSA believes the recall scope is too narrow. Is there anything be done to open up the scope of the recall? Any suggestions how I can get my position heard?

The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle would independently switched to 4WD Mode. The vehicle hesitated upon depression of the accelerator pedal. The dealer was notified of the failure; however, the contact was informed that the vehicle was only under recall for a rear-view camera sensor. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V290000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. I have a 2019 Jeep Cherokee with around 52000 miles on it. The SVC 4WD light came on, and so I looked up potential recalls. It looks like my particular VIN was not part of the Recall (26V-290), but is having the same problem. I would love to know if this is something I can get taken care of by the dealership/Jeep, as it's a very expensive fix for something that should have a much longer lifespan. The dealer has the car, but tells me it's safe to drive (for now). There are some reverse to drive sounds that are disconcerting, as well as a number of pop-up notifications about the lack of 4WD capability. Given the concerns listed in the previous recall (26V-290), I would argue that this is ALSO a concern and should be considered as a potential expansion of that previous recall.

The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle was initially taken to the dealer because the check engine light illuminated and the radio became very hot. The dealer replaced a valve and installed a new screen, which temporarily resolved the issue. Months later, the failures recurred, and the transmission was replaced. The vehicle was returned to the dealer for a software update. During a later visit, the dealer diagnosed the vehicle with a failing transmission gasket, a rear differential leak, an engine oil leak, and a failed battery requiring replacement. After the contact heard a loud scraping noise, the vehicle was returned to the dealer, who performed a rear differential fluid change but stated no mechanical failure was present. The contact returned the vehicle to the dealer after a "Service 4WD" warning light illuminated. The dealer replaced the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) motor, despite claiming the PTU was unrelated to the failure. The contact stated that the transmission assembly, PTU motor, gaskets, and other essential powertrain components were all replaced within a one-year period. The contact stated that the engine consistently emitted an abnormal unknown odor. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The dealer confirmed the failure. The failure mileage was 38,000.

I had a failed Power Transfer Unit. Received a "SVC 4WD" light on my dashboard. After running a code check, it was determined to be a PTU issue. There is an apparent recall on this unit for 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokees. I own a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus which was NOT part of the recall. I'm not sure why it wasn't if I'm having the same issue as the cars that were part of the recall. Now the part is on backorder and I'm having to pay out of pocket for a $4,000 repair. The car is currently at the Jeep dealership awaiting the part and the repair. I think the recall needs to be expanded as this seems to reach more than just the vehicles in the current recall.

Power train, it is available for inspection, recall information states the power train unit could fail causing loss of power and possible accident. I had the car checked at an independent shop and their test equipment said it was a recall item and to take it to a dealership. I took it to a jeep dealership and they said there is no fix available nothing they could do unless I paid for the repair. I could then send the repair invoice to Jeep and they "might" reimburse me, but they (Jeep) in there letter on the recall says there is no fix. The message on my console states, " 4 wheel drive unavailable" and in the lower right hand corner of the display it reads "svc 4 wheel drive,". I can't understand why there would be "no fix available" and where does that leave me and my vehicle? It has not failed so far but I am concerned it will. I was told not to drive it any long distance?

I couldn’t shut it off, put it in drive, put it in park…….The car still seemed to be running… I had to wait about 10 mins before I could do anything I.e. start it up again. It’s a recall so it needs looked at and I took it to the dealership saying my concerns and they have told me that there is no fix available yet for it which that cannot be true because I got something in the mail saying that there is a fix available so I’m not sure if they just don’t wanna do it cause it’s gonna be a hard job to do but it needs done ASAP because that’s putting my life in danger just having total loss drive power while driving down the highway doing 65 to 70 miles an hour it has happened three total times now.

Vehicle suffered sudden total internal PTU failure with active Diagnostic Trouble Code C1496-92 (PTU Motor Position Performance). Diagnosed at AutoNation CDJR Southwest (RO #619044). * Technicians attempted to resolve the drivetrain issue by applying factory software updates UA9 and W20. The software flashes completed successfully, but DTC C1496-92 remained active and 4WD remained unavailable, confirming a complete internal mechanical breakdown of the PTU assembly. This mechanical failure causes a sudden loss of motive power and rollaway hazard identical to NHTSA Recall 25V011 / Campaign 01C. Chrysler’s dealer portal (DealerCONNECT) auto-rejected goodwill assistance strictly due to vehicle model year parameters, despite low mileage (65,438 miles) and an identical mechanical failure mode to recalled units.

My 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited experienced a structural failure of the rear differential assembly, Mopar part number 53010758AG. The aluminum housing has fractured and broken away around the output shaft/retaining-ring area. There has been no known collision or external impact that would explain this damage. This failure raises serious safety concerns because damage to the differential housing could potentially cause lubricant loss, further drivetrain failure, or loss of propulsion. Photographs documenting the broken housing are available. I have identified multiple similar NHTSA complaints involving 2019 Jeep Cherokees with rear differential housing fractures and retaining-ring failures, including complaints 11761757, 11736628, and 11718514. My 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk has developed a severe internal defect in the two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU), putting me at imminent risk of the exact safety hazard—unexpected loss of drive power—detailed in NHTSA Recall 26V-290 (FCA Recall 40D). On 09/09/2026, Woodhouse Bellevue Jeep officially diagnosed the failure under Repair Order 185030843/2. The dealership's technician explicitly documented that the PTU "has internal damage causing gears to grind and making noise when vehicle is moving". Despite official documentation from their own dealership confirming the internal failure, FCA US Corporate Customer Care (Case #98142458) refused to honor the recall. They denied the repair by claiming my failure was not the "specific" type of internal damage covered. By waiting for the grinding gears to completely shatter before acknowledging the recall, FCA is using bad-faith technicalities to dodge a federal safety mandate. They are intentionally forcing me to drive a defective vehicle until it catastrophically loses drive power on the road. I am requesting the NHTSA investigate FCA’s handling of Recall 40D and force retroactive reimbursement for my necessary out-of-pocket repairs.

Would like to add to the growing list of frustrated Jeep Cherokee owners requiring an expensive repair for known PTU issues. The "Service 4WD" check light came on 1 year ago (checked by service department 12/2025), finally diagnosed in August 2026 as a failed PTU, with back ordered repair due to rising number of this specific repair/part. There was a recall done on 2015-2019 Jeep Cherokees for this very same issue. Why this safety recall hasn't been extended to post -2019 Jeep Cherokee versions is confusing.

My 2019 Jeep Cherokee experienced a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failure that matches the known PTU recall defect, even though my VIN is not currently listed. The first code that appeared was C1494‑07, which is the recall‑related DTC. Cochran Jeep in Natrona Heights performed the recall software update and cleared the code. They told us that if the code returned, initial diagnostics would then cost a minimum of $190. The code did not initially return after the software upgrade. Several days afterwards, a SVC 4WD reappeared. During our state inspection, our trusted garage (Performance Auto) scanned the vehicle and found a new error code: C14A7‑97. Further inspection revealed metal shavings throughout the PTU fluid, indicating internal mechanical failure. They documented the findings and provided a photo of the metal shaving in the fluid. They indicated that the vehicle “had a reprogram done to it but the PTU failed – metal all through the fluid.” The AWD system is no longer functioning. The new code: C14A7‑97, indicates a PTU motor obstruction or blocked component. This occurred after the recall update and after the PTU had already suffered internal damage. We took the vehicle to Hillview Jeep in Greensburg. They read the new code but did not inspect the PTU or look at the photos showing metal contamination. They said that because the current code was different from the recall code and advised us to contact Stellantis. The PTU has clearly failed internally, the AWD system is inop

I received a recall on my Jeep Cherokee in June (40D/NHTSA 26V-290) for Power Transfer Unit failure. I contacted FCA recall center [XXX]). The notice indicated that at present there was not remedy for the recall. In August we noticed that the vehicle was engaging into 4WD on dry pavement causing it to lunge when making turns at low speed. I reached to to FCA and was directed to get the vehicle evaluated by the dealership. The dealer created a STAR case since this is the 4th time we have had this type of issue. The PTU identified for replacement. There is no timeline for when a replacement part will be available. FCA is trying to make us pay upfront for a rental car that they "promise" they will reimburse at a later date. We told them we did not have the budget for a rental and have requested a loan or that they direct pay for the rental. FCA needs to cover the cost of their safety issue not the consumer. We need a safe vehicle to drive in the interim, based on the recall notice we would be risking our lives and those of others if we drove this vehicle. I can provide lots of documentation if needed. On September 14, 2025, while driving on the highway, the vehicle began shaking violently, the check engine light illuminated and began flashing, and the vehicle progressively lost power and became undriveable. The vehicle had to be towed. No warning lights appeared prior to the incident. This failure follows a documented history of Power Transfer Unit (PTU) issues. In May 2024 at approximately 88,000 miles, diagnostic codes including C14A7-97 (PTU Motor - Component/System Blocked) were retrieved at an independent service center. The 4-wheel drive system was found to be stuck engaged. The transfer case actuator motor was replaced in December 2024 at approximately 93,000 miles by the same shop at my expense. The vehicle is a single-speed PTU configuration and was excluded from Equipment Safety Recall 02C (Two Speed PTU Failure), despite experiencing substantially similar symptoms: loss of drive power, vibration, and drivetrain malfunction. The PTU and transfer case are available for inspection. The failure has been confirmed by an independent service center. Prior to the highway failure, the vehicle exhibited difficulty accelerating, particularly at highway speeds, and an audible whirring sound from the drivetrain. It also jerked forward when shifting into Park. Safety was put at risk due to sudden loss of motive power at highway speed.

The contact notified the dealer of the failure and the recall; however, the dealer stated that the symptoms did not appear to be related to the recall. Two diagnostic tests were performed, and it was determined that the failure was not associated with the recall. The contact was texted a link that had a detailed list of the multiple issues with the vehicle; the contact was then given an estimate for the repair. The contact called several dealers about the failure, and the dealers agreed that, based on the symptoms described, the failure was associated with the recall. The contact attempted to make an appointment with other dealers; however, none was able to provide a loaner vehicle.

I am filing this safety complaint regarding my 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus 2.4L AWD. This vehicle is experiencing severe, life-threatening safety hazards involving sudden engine stalling and a complete loss of motive power while in motion. Despite my vehicle exhibiting the exact failure symptoms of multiple major FCA/Stellantis safety recalls for this model year, my specific VIN is currently showing as excluded from the recall database, leaving me with a highly dangerous vehicle and no dealership remedy. The vehicle is suffering from two distinct, interrelated defects that have recently caused terrifying incidents in heavy traffic. First, while driving, the dashboard suddenly illuminated both the "SVC 4WD" (Service 4WD) and the "Auto Start-Stop" warning lights simultaneously. Immediately following these warnings, the vehicle lost forward power and unexpectedly rolled forward while I was fully stopped at a red light, failing to hold its position. This mirrors the exact mechanical behavior of the known Jeep PTU spline-wear defects that cause sudden rollaways and a loss of drive power.Second, the vehicle completely stalled out and shut down while I was driving on a highway exit ramp. The engine lost all power without warning, forcing me to coast through traffic, shift into park, and completely cycle the ignition to restart it. This engine shutdown creates an imminent risk of a rear-end collision on high-speed roads. The vehicle has a severe issue with oil consumption, which

I am reporting a severe cascading drivetrain failure on my 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk (VIN:[XXX] ) caused directly by defective components that are the subject of active federal safety recalls (NHTSA Campaigns 01C / 40D / 25V011).This vehicle has a documented service history of two separate, consecutive Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failures. The first PTU was replaced at a previous dealership, and a subsequent unit failed and was replaced later. The mechanical binding, slipping, and severe shock-loading caused by these factory-defective PTU modules repeatedly hammered the transmission's internal components during low-gear acceleration. As a direct result of this cumulative mechanical trauma, the transmission's 1st-gear clutch (Clutch A, a mechanical interlocking dog clutch) has prematurely failed at 80,500 miles, leaving the vehicle completely disabled and unable to safely engage forward gears. The dealership confirmed internal failure of the 1st-gear clutch but refused 100% repair coverage, stating the current PTU is functional. However, because this is a sealed ZF 9-speed transmission, the dealer cannot visually inspect Clutch A for cumulative metal fatigue or micro-fractures without a total teardown. The manufacturer, Stellantis/FCA, is refusing to take corporate responsibility for the cascading damage caused to the transmission by their recalled, defective transfer units (Corporate Case Number: XXX). I am requesting that NHTSA investigate how the structural defects in the 20

I own a 2019 Jeep Cherokee (VIN [XXX]). While driving, the vehicle displayed a “Four-Wheel Drive Service Unavailable” / “Service 4WD” warning. I recently had the 4WD warning inspected by a service department via a transfer case actuator repair, but I was advised that the PTU showed signs of wear and may be developing an issue. I have also previously experienced a “Service Electronic Stability Control” warning and have had an ongoing vibration when braking. Approximately one year ago, the vehicle’s rear differential required a complete rebuild. I am concerned these issues may indicate a larger drivetrain/4WD system defect, particularly in light of NHTSA recalls **25V-011 (FCA 01C)** and **26V-290 (FCA 40D)** involving PTU/drivetrain concerns affecting Jeep Cherokees. My VIN does not currently show an open recall. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether these symptoms and the observed PTU wear may be related to the recalled condition or another known safety defect. The component/system that is malfunctioning is the Power Transfer Unit. This is a well-known issue with Jeep Cherokees of many generations, including the 2019. It is available for inspection upon request, but it's being fixed at a Jeep dealership. No safety was put at risk, but if the PTU failed totally while driving, it would have put our safety for ourselves, and others ' safety at risk. This malfunction was confirmed/diagnosed at a dealership. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative, or anyone else outside of ourselves and mechanics. There was a warning light that would come on intermittently but wasn't constant with no other symptoms showing. This happened for less than a week before a thumping started and we were able to bring it in to a shop.

The motor experiences a malfunction, which the passengers feel as a slight ‘bump’ in the engine. The dash flashes Service Electronic Stability Control and the engine experiences a loss in power followed by a gain in power, experienced as slight lurching. The dash ESC icon lights up yellow simultaneously as the ESC button on the center dash instrument cluster. The vehicle continuously lurches as it tries to stabilize, at this point the most ginger touch to the accelerator is necessary, otherwise the engine may stall out. I have been left stalled in the middle of a road where there was moving traffic passing by both ways. The mechanic said the engine codes read- P0340- Camshaft Position Sensor B1S1 & U1428- Received Engine Torque request signal stuck.

My vehicle (2019 Cherokee trailhawk) was subject to 2 PTU recalls. I had the first one replaced after the dash light came on, then had that one replaced after it failed and began leaking fluid. When it started having issues again, I took it to a dealership and they stated the transmissions first gear dog clutch had gone out/was damaged. It only has 80,500 miles on it and I believe the shock load from multiple failing factory recalled components directly caused cumulative strain to the clutch subsequently leading to premature failure. At this point in time I am facing an $8,800 repair cost, which needless to say would be a severe financial strain.

2019 Jeep Cherokee: questions buyers ask

Is the 2019 Jeep Cherokee a good car?

Going by the federal record, it is one of the Cherokee years to avoid: owners filed 1,674 complaints, 4.2 times as many as a typical Cherokee year. The most common complaint is about the transmission (40%). In NHTSA crash tests it scored 4 stars overall.

What is the most common problem with the 2019 Jeep Cherokee?

The transmission: 669 of the 1,674 complaints (40%) are about it. Owners most often say it sets off warning lights on the dash (35%), loses power (15%) and knocks, grinds or clunks (11%). The typical report comes at 63,000 miles.

How many recalls does the 2019 Jeep Cherokee have?

11 safety recalls on file with NHTSA, the most recent filed May 7, 2026. The largest, 18V523000, covered 154,335 vehicles. Recall repairs are free at a dealer; whether a specific car still has one open depends on its VIN.

At what mileage do 2019 Jeep Cherokee problems start?

Half of the complaints that record an odometer reading came in before 21,275 miles. For the transmission the midpoint is 63,000 miles.

Are there service bulletins for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee?

The manufacturer filed 407 technical service bulletins and other notices for it with NHTSA, most of them about the electrical system (93), the transmission (49) and the body and frame (40). They include a warranty extension, 111432, filed Apr 8, 2026. A bulletin is a repair instruction to dealers, not a recall: the fix is usually free only under warranty.

Reading this record

Complaint volume is well above typical for a single model year.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.

Most recent recall on file: May 7, 2026. Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation.
