“The torque converter is malfunctioning. This malfunction can damage the entire transmission by releasing metal debris into the transmission system due to severe shuddering. If the torque converter fails while driving, I could lose acceleration power and potentially lose power steering assist and brake assist if the engine stalls, making the vehicle significantly harder to control.”
Owner complaint, filed May 6, 2026
“Transmission shudder - noticed transmission vibration at speeds from 25 to 30 mph and before 50 mph. Took the car to a shop for wheel alignment, vibration still felt. Took to a dealer , Hamer Toyota in Mission Hills, CA., and dealer said, it could be just the transmission oil, so I had the oil change done. Problem was the same. Took it for tire rotation and balance, but problem was the same.”

Defect. Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2014 Toyota Camry, Camry HV, Avalon, and Avalon HV vehicles equipped with 16-inch and 17-inch rims. In the affected vehicles, the left-side front suspension lower arm may have been incorrectly manufactured. As a result, the left side lower arm may not have enough clamping surface area for one of the bolts that secures the lower arm to the lower ball joint.
Risk. Because of the insufficient clamping force, the lower arm may separate from the ball joint, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left side lower arm, free of charge. The recall began on December 12, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Defect. Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Camry and Camry HV, model year 2013 Avalon and Avalon HV and model year 2014 Corolla vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."
Risk. A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

My safety was put at risk because I did not have the protection of the airbags during a serious head-on collision. I was wearing my seat belt, but I still suffered a concussion, bruised ribs, two sprained ankles, pain in my head, neck, back, tailbone, jaw, and shoulder, as well as a burn from the seat belt. Since the accident, I have also experienced difficulty opening my mouth and eating on the right side and jaw pain and popping. The failure has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent repair shop because the car is not drivable. I contacted Toyota and signed a consent form allowing them to investigate the vehicle, but I have not received an update, their findings, or confirmation that the inspection has been completed. The vehicle is currently at a tow yard and is available for inspection upon request. However, I am being charged $75 per day in storage fees and cannot afford to keep it there indefinitely. Before the crash, I was not aware of any airbag warning lights, warning messages, or other signs that the airbag system was not working.

Power Train
Filed May 6, 2026NC
The torque converter is malfunctioning. This malfunction can damage the entire transmission by releasing metal debris into the transmission system due to severe shuddering. If the torque converter fails while driving, I could lose acceleration power and potentially lose power steering assist and brake assist if the engine stalls, making the vehicle significantly harder to control. This creates a serious safety risk, especially at highway speeds where a sudden loss of power could increase the risk of a collision. The torque converter was previously subject to a recall, but the recall has since expired. The issue has been reproduced and documented by an independent service provider. Although no warning lights appear on the dashboard, the vehicle consistently shows symptoms associated with torque converter failure, including: * Intense shuddering * Loss of power during acceleration * Transmission slipping These symptoms indicate an ongoing and potentially dangerous drivetrain failure that poses a risk to driver and public safety.

I said, it’s only 100,000 miles, but less than 150,000 miles — which was the maximum extended mileage warranty. Toyota insisted they could not do anything because 2022 came 1st and not the 150k miles. Took it to a transmission shop and after diagnosis, had it .rebuilt. Rebuilding partially solved the problem, a little improvement from before. Took it back for more checking until finally, after valve body assembly replacement, shudder is gone.

There is a transmission shudder when traveling around 30-40 MPH as well as sporadically when increasing speed. Recently, there is a very hard shift/jolt when transmission is shifting from 2nd to 3rd. The issue is caused by a combination of a faulty torque converter and a software glitch in the engine control module (ECM). This is a safety hazard, and I contacted Toyota dealership in Vineland who told me that they can't do anything. However, to fix the problem that Toyota issued the recall themselves, Toyota dealers need to replace to the torque converter and update the ECM software. I am reaching out to the NHTSA because this is a safety hazard, and I hope you are able to help me.

I own a 2014 Toyota Camry with 163,000 miles. For years, I’ve experienced a noticeable shudder and vibration around 40–50 mph, which I now understand is a common defect related to the torque converter and addressed in a Toyota-issued TSB (T-SB-0168-14). I was never notified of this bulletin, despite having my car serviced regularly. Toyota and its dealers consistently failed to inform me of this issue, and now that I’m just over the mileage cap, they are refusing to assist. I feel deceived and upsold on unnecessary repairs when a known, more affordable fix existed. This is an unethical practice and a known problem that needs further federal investigation.

Over the 10 years I have owned this car, it has failed to start about a dozen times. 1/2 the time I am at home and 1/2 the time I am away from home. Sometimes if you wait a few hours it will then start, often times it has to get towed to the dealer. Upon arrival at the dealership, it usually starts. The Toyota dealership has been unable to correctly diagnose the problem. As such, I spend money on repairs that do not actually fix it. The latest "diagnosis" is that the steering lock actuator motor needs to be replaced. Cost about $900. There is no guarantee that replacing this part will fix the problem. Calls to Toyota Corporation go unreturned. I call them, log a case, the case is closed without a response. Rinse and repeat. Has happened three times already. Clearly they do not care. This is a very serious problem. Below is just the latest incident that happened on 10/15/2024.

1 death reported in complaints filed with NHTSA.
Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
