Filed Feb 21, 20244,212 vehiclesToyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

Defect. Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Camry and Camry Hybrid vehicles. The second-row center and right-side seats may have insufficiently welded head restraint brackets. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 202, "Head Restraints."

Risk. A head restraint bracket that is insufficiently welded may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy. Dealers will replace the 60% rear seat-back frame sub-assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 19, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB04 and 24TA04.

The lock/unlocking of the car doors no longer functions. When pressing unlock on the key or door, the doors do not unlock. When pressing lock on the key or door, the doors do not lock. The only way into the vehicle is using the physical key to unlock the door. The bigger issue is when driving, the door is not locked when the car is in motion, and the door can be opened if a child or person slightly pulls the handle. The components have not been inspected and there have been no warning lights.

Electrical System

My 2023 Toyota Camry has developed an intermittent defect where the ignition key becomes stuck and cannot be removed even though the dashboard shows the vehicle is in Park. The only way to remove the key is to disconnect the vehicle's battery, which is not a normal or safe operating procedure. The problem occurs intermittently and has happened multiple times. I believe there may be a defect involving the ignition key release system, shift interlock, park position switch, or a related electrical component. This condition could leave drivers stranded or unable to secure their vehicle and creates a potential safety concern. I am submitting this complaint so the issue can be investigated and to determine whether other 2023 Toyota Camry owners are experiencing the same problem.

On July 10, 2026, my vehicle was parked, turned off, and unattended. The front windows were partially rolled down because the outside temperature was approximately 80°F. I had been away from the vehicle for about one hour. Approximately 20 minutes before discovering the incident, I heard fire trucks nearby but did not initially realize they were responding to my vehicle. When I returned, I discovered that the vehicle had caught fire and that the fire department had already extinguished it. I do not know what component or system failed or where the fire originated. Before parking the vehicle, I did not observe any warning lights, dashboard messages, smoke, unusual odors, overheating, electrical issues, mechanical problems, or other symptoms that would have indicated a possible fire or malfunction. Because the vehicle caught fire while parked and turned off, the incident created a serious safety risk to nearby people, surrounding vehicles, homes, and other property. Fortunately, I am not aware of anyone being inside or immediately next to the vehicle when the fire began. A fire marshal is currently investigating the incident and the cause remains unknown. The issue has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealership, manufacturer, or independent repair facility. That I am aware of. The firemarshalle said it appears to be manufactured defects. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer to my knowledge. The damaged vehicle and affected components should be availa

Component/System: Smart Key System / Automatic Door Locking System I own a 2023 Toyota Camry LE equipped with a Smart Key System. I parked the vehicle, turned off the engine, and left the smart key inside the vehicle. My [XXX] child remained securely strapped into a rear child safety seat and was sleeping inside. I briefly stepped outside to wipe dust from the windshield while standing next to the vehicle. After the driver’s door closed, the vehicle automatically locked itself with the smart key still inside. I did not intentionally lock the vehicle. I was unable to unlock the doors because the smart key was locked inside the vehicle. My [XXX] child was trapped inside the locked vehicle, creating an emergency situation. To rescue my child, I had no choice but to break the driver’s side window. There were no warning lights or warning messages before the incident. The cause is unknown. The vehicle has not yet been inspected to determine why it automatically locked with the smart key inside. Based on the circumstances, the Smart Key System either failed to detect the smart key or the vehicle improperly allowed the doors to lock despite the key remaining inside. I believe this presents a serious safety risk because it can trap children inside the vehicle. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We bought our 2023 Camry brand new off the lot and had no idea until the first rainstorm we were in that there was an issue with the wiper motor. Anytime there is moderate to hard rainfall and we turn the wipers on high they run at a low speed causing poor to no visibility. We have to pull over every time wait out the rain. We’ve mentioned our concern many times to the dealership where we have our Toyotas serviced and they just tell us they don’t see a recall for this problem. This is incredibly dangerous and hazardous and it needs to be fixed - we just don’t know how to go about it at this point.

I am filing a complaint regarding my 2023 Toyota Camry with 23,375 miles. The vehicle has been diagnosed with an infotainment system failure that presents identical symptoms to an active recall affecting similar vehicles. Toyota has confirmed my VIN is not included in the recall campaign, despite the failure matching the recall description. The dealership has documented the defect, and Toyota approved only 50% goodwill assistance. The system malfunction affects core vehicle functions controlled through the infotainment interface, creating driver distraction and potential safety concerns. I am concerned that vehicles outside the current VIN range are experiencing the same defect and that the recall population may be too narrowly defined. I am requesting review of this issue to determine whether additional vehicles, including mine, should be included in the recall. I have attached the diagnostic invoice for the dealership to confirm no updates or repairs could be performed and a new infotainment system would be required at an out of pocket cost of 50% of $2277.87.

NHTSA has issued a do-not-drive warning for a recall on this vehicle.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.

Most recent recall on file: Feb 21, 2024. Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation.
