2017 Volkswagen GTI

Defect. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister.

Risk. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy. Dealers will replace the suction pump, free of charge. Final owner notification letters for Audi owners were mailed on July 25, 2024. Final owner letters for VW owners were mailed on August 13, 2024. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are VW: 20UF/Audi: 20YF. Vehicles that were previously recalled under 16V-647 will need to have the new remedy completed. This recall expands and replaces previous recall number 16V-647.

Defect. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."

Risk. Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Remedy. Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began November 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37M2.

Fuel pump and thermostat failure. Known issue on 2017 GTI models and VW corporate will not grant an exception for the class action settlement since vehicle is outside of coverage period. All scheduled maintenance on vehicle has been done at a dealership and i have had no issues. Spoke with VW Corporate and they will not grant an exception or allow me to speak to anyone else after requesting an escalation request to a supervisor. They also said filing a complaint will not do anything since the outcome will not change.

On June 24, 2026, Safety Recall 20UF (Suction Jet Pump) was completed by an authorized Volkswagen dealer. Upon leaving the dealership, the vehicle immediately experienced a severe engine stall and extended no-start condition. During the recall service, liquid fuel flooded the EVAP lines and charcoal canister, saturating the intake with raw fuel. This caused an immediate safety hazard, stalling the vehicle in active traffic in 110+ degree summer heat. The vehicle was brought back to the dealer, who confirmed the stall but incorrectly blamed a fuel injector, refusing to acknowledge the EVAP flooding caused by the recall work. Due to the no-start condition, the vehicle was flatbed towed. Raw fuel from this EVAP lines washed past the piston rings, requiring an emergency engine oil change to prevent catastrophic engine failure from severe oil dilution. VW Customer CARE (Case #07594393) refused reimbursement for the towing ($167.00) and oil flush ($101.74) resulting directly from the botched recall. VW failed to provide a safe, effective, cost-free recall remedy. Repair documents attached.

Had an immediate loss of propulsion event without warning (2-Feb-2026) after recall work completed on 16-Dec-20256 (24V110000). I lost propulsion on public roads and was lucky that this happened just after I exited the highway otherwise I would have ended up in a life threatening situation

The vehicle was involved in a low-speed frontal collision (under approximately 20 mph) resulting in relatively minor front-end damage. Despite the limited severity of the impact, the driver frontal airbag and both the front and rear driver-side curtain airbags deployed. The vehicle has no prior accident history, had no SRS or airbag warning lights prior to the incident, and has approximately 86,000 miles. Due to the nature of the collision and the deployment of multiple airbags, I have concerns that the airbag system may have deployed unnecessarily or abnormally. I am requesting that this concern be formally documented. It is available for inspection. It has not been fixed. I have opened a case with VW.

Description of the Problem: The fuel pump failed and began spraying gasoline during operation. The malfunction was documented on video by an authorized Volkswagen mechanic and confirmed by a Volkswagen dealership in Honolulu, Hawaii. The component is available for inspection if required. Safety Risk: The failure caused pressurized gasoline to spray within the engine compartment, presenting a serious fire and explosion hazard. This defect posed a danger to the driver, passengers, and others nearby due to potential ignition of leaked fuel. Reproduction and Inspection: The condition was reproduced and confirmed by both an independent authorized Volkswagen mechanic and a Volkswagen dealership in Honolulu. The issue has not yet been inspected by Volkswagen of America, insurance representatives, or police authorities. Warning Signs or Prior Symptoms: A strong smell of gasoline inside the passenger cabin was present prior to discovery of the leak. No dashboard warning lights or error messages appeared. Summary: Fuel pump failure caused gasoline to spray under pressure. The problem was verified by an authorized VW mechanic and dealership in Honolulu, HI. The defective component remains available for inspection. Immediate safety risk due to potential ignition of fuel vapors.

On October 13, 2025, while driving my 2017 Volkswagen GTI, I noticed a strong odor of gasoline inside and around the vehicle. After parking and inspecting the car, I observed a large pool of gasoline forming in front of the rear passenger-side wheel well. This poses a serious safety risk due to the potential for fire or explosion from fuel leakage. This is the second time my vehicle has experienced gasoline leaking from this same area. The issue appears to originate from a component in or near the fuel system (potentially the fuel line, rollover valve, or suction jet pump assembly), but the specific part has not yet been confirmed. The vehicle is currently at Honolulu Volkswagen for inspection, and the affected components are available for review upon request. At this time, no warning lights, dashboard messages, or prior symptoms appeared before the leak occurred. The odor of gasoline was the first sign of the issue. I believe this recurring fuel leak presents a significant fire hazard and warrants further investigation by Volkswagen and NHTSA.

Rear back-up camera fails repeatedly. The image portrayed on the dash is garbled and I am unable to determine vehicles, obstacles or persons behind me when backing. Problem is very reproducible although the dealer has not diagnosed the problem. The car is out of warranty. The only message displayed on the screen is something like "Park Pilot error".

I had fuel leaking from my carbon canister. I was driving the previous day and noticed a gasoline smell. I thought it was something I ran over. The next day, while performing errands, I noticed the smell even more. Then I exited the vehicle to see the fuel pouring out of the car. The dealership has it now.

The steering wheel clockspring mechanism has failed causing the vehicle steering wheel operated controls (including the horn) to stop working. The airbag warning lamp illuminated on the dashboard, indicating the airbag system may not be functional. Apparently Volkswagen has issued a recall/extended the warranty on many VW models in light of the high failure rate of the clockspring mechanism, however my 2017 GTI is not currently covered. Perhaps the recall/extended warranty should be expanded in scope.

Earlier in 2024, Volkswagen of America issued a recall for the Suction Jet Pump, on the 14th of December i went to VW of Pompano Beach in Florida, to get the recall done, however, after they delivered back the car, it started to leak fuel after i put gas on it. On December 17th I took it again to the dealer to get it fixed and they gave me back the vehicle on December 19th. On [XXX] I put gas on the vehicle and it started to leak fuel again and this time it was way worse than before. I accuse the dealer of being responsible of performing a bad job on the recall as the vehicle had never leaked fuel before I had the recall done. I have the vehicle since February 2024. It worries me that there is a big possibility that the car can catch on fire if by any reason there is a spark near to me or there is any thing that can trigger the fuel to ignite. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000. The contact owns a 2017 Volkswagen GTI. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH up an incline, the vehicle lurched forward without warning. The contact then stated that while the vehicle was idling, there was an abnormally strong fuel odor coming from the vehicle and the fuel gauge went from half tank to empty. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the contact discovered that the fuel had leaked out of the fuel tank. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the dealer. Upon investigation, the contact discovered that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V110000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) and the contact linked the failure to the recall. The dealer confirmed that the failure was linked to the recall and that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 77,304. The contact owns a 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The contact stated that while stopped at a red light, the vehicle shuddered and stalled. The EPC warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart after an hour. The vehicle was taken to the residence and the contact observed a hissing sound coming from the gas cap and there was fuel spilling from the gas cap. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the gas tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

The contact pushed the vehicle into the parking spot. The contact noticed that gas was leaking from the fuel tank onto the ground. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000.

THE FUEL TANK AND CHARCOAL CANISTER IN THIS VEHICLE HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE, ONCE BY THE DEALER I PURCHASED FROM (WEEKS PRIOR TO PURCHASE) AND AGAIN NOT EVEN A WEEK AFTER PURCHASE. IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE CHARCOAL CANISTER FLOODED WHILE FUELING, HOWEVER I NEVER TOP OFF MY VEHICLES. THIS ISSUES SEEMS TO BE COMMON IN THIS PARTICULAR MAKE AND MODEL. I NOTICED IT BY SMELL AT FIRST, BUT DIDN'T INVESTIGATE UNTIL I NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT DECLINE IN MY FUEL LEVEL OVERNIGHT, WHILE PARKED. ONCE I BEGAN TO INVESTIGATE I NOTICED A FUEL LEAK NEAR THE FUELING DOOR AT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.

FUEL TANK WOULD NOT ACCEPT REFUELING. WHEN CHECKED OUT WAS FOUND THAT TANK WAS LEAKING GAS. CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING GASOLINE. THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT OF ANY TYPE.

INTERIOR TRIM IN FRONT OF SHIFTER IS UNREASONABLY SHARP. WHEN REMOVING ITEMS, LIKE CELL PHONE, OR WALLET FROM THE STORAGE CUBBY IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER MULTIPLE FINGERS HAVE BEEN SNAGGED AND SLICED DEEPLY. THE FIRST TIME I WAS CUT THE CUT WAS SMALL ON THE TIP OF MY RIGHT RING FINGER. BECAUSE OF THE SHARPNESS OF THE TRIM PIECE I DID NOT KNOW I WAS CUT UNTIL I NOTICED BLOOD. I ALSO DID NOT KNOW WHERE THE FIRST CUT CAME FROM. IT WAS ONLY WHEN I WAS CUT 2 MORE TIMES, BOTH DEEPER AND WITH MORE BLEEDING THAT I REALIZED WHAT WAS CUTTING ME AND WHY IT WAS HAPPENING. IT IS TOO EASY FOR FINGERS TO GET CAUGHT ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE "CHROME" TRIM PIECE AROUND THE SHIFTER WHEN REMOVING ITEMS FROM THE STORAGE CUBBY.

COULD NOT PUMP GAS INTO THE GAS TANK. COULD INSERT THE PUMP NOZZLE INTO THE OPENING TO THE GAS TANK. WHEN TRIED TO PUMP GAS, GAS WOULD NOT GO INTO THE TANK AND SPILL OUT. THIS PROBLEM IS ALREADY A RECALL ON THE VW GTI 2015 MODEL. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AT A GAS PUMP.

THERE IS A MAJOR DEFECT WITH THE CENTER CONSOLE STORAGE OF THIS VEHICLE THAT IS CAUSING DEEP CUTS AND GASHES ON PEOPLE'S HANDS. SPECIFICALLY, THE SILVER SHARP METAL TRIM PIECE IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER BOOT BECOMES SLIGHTLY LIFTED OVER TIME AS IT SEPARATES FROM A PLASTIC THAT HOLDS IT, AND THE SHARP EDGE IS EXPOSED IN AN AREA THAT A DRIVER / PASSENGER REACHES INTO REGULARLY. MANY OTHERS HAVE REPORTED SIMILAR PROBLEM ON THE CAR FORUM GOLFMK7.COM AS WELL. HAVE ATTACHED SOME PHOTOS OF THE CUT AND PIECE (THOUGH IT IS HARD TO SEE) FOR YOUR INFORMATION.
