Defect. Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2010-2013 Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 vehicles manufactured November 18, 2008, to June 8, 2013, 2012-2015 Mazda5 vehicles manufactured October 26, 2010, to June 22, 2015, 2016 CX-3 vehicles manufactured June 1, 2015, to December 26, 2015, and 2013-2016 CX-5 vehicles manufactured December 15, 2011, to December 26, 2015. On the affected vehicles, the lift gate support struts may corrode, possibly causing the struts to break and/or the lift gate to drop unexpectedly.

Risk. If the lift gate falls unexpectedly, it may hit the user, increasing their risk of injury.

Remedy. Mazda dealers will replace the both lift gate supports, free of charge, however parts are not currently available. The recall began April 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 9916H.

Defect. Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2016 CX-3 vehicles manufactured June 1, 2015, to December 2, 2015, 2013-2014 Mazda2 vehicles manufactured July 3, 2013, to August 8, 2014, 2014-2016 CX-5 vehicles manufactured January 19, 2013, to December 2, 2015, and 2013-2015 CX-9 vehicles manufactured December 6, 2012, to July 31, 2015. The lower mounting nuts and bolts that attach the front strut assembly to the steering knuckle may loosen, allowing the steering knuckle to separate.

Risk. If the steering knuckle separates from the strut assembly, it can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the lower mounting nuts and bolts that secure the front strut assembly to the steering knuckle. If the bolts are loose, they will be replaced and then correctly tightened, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 20, 2016. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 9316D.

Defect. Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Mazda CX-5 vehicles manufactured June 27, 2013, to February 2, 2016. The affected vehicles have a fuel filler pipe that may rupture in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 301, "Fuel System Integrity."

Risk. A rupture of the fuel filler pipe may result in a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Remedy. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will alter the attachment between the fuel filler pipe and the left rear side of the bracket of the fuel filler pipe, free of charge. The recall began on February 25, 2016. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 9216B.

Defect. Pilkington North America, Inc. (Pilkington) is recalling certain replacement windshields, model FW04026 GTY, manufactured November 23, 2015, to December 16, 2015 for use in Mazda CX-5 vehicles that are equipped with the Smart City Brake Support system. The affected windshields have a bracket mounted on the inside to hold a laser sensor or LIDAR device for the Smart City Brake Support system. These brackets were improperly affixed with only tape instead of tape and urethane and therefore may loosen.

Risk. If the bracket loosens or detaches from the windshield, the safety features of the Smart City Brake Support system may be disabled and therefore increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Pilkington will contact the wholesalers and retailers that purchased the windshields to try to identify the affected customers. The affected windshields will be replaced, free of charge. This recall began on February 15, 2016. Owners may contact Pilkington at 1-844-278-7230.

The car's electrical system doesn't fully turn off after being put in park and turning the ignition off. The electrical system stays on, despite the engine and ignition turned off. It's a BIG problem that I've seen a lot of other people report. And yet Mazda refuses to address the issue.

I was driving down the road and my right side curtain airbag deployed. I did let my insurance company know but was told that they couldn’t do anything for me since it was not an accident. I called the local Mazda dealership and they told me that they could inspect the vehicle but it would not be on them. That it could have been a rat that chewed on something to cause it to deploy because I was not the first owner of the vehicle. There was no other damage other than the airbag and where it came through on the side.

The contact stated that while her husband was driving at a slow speed and attempting to parallel park, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine before the steering wheel seized. No warning light was illuminated. The contact's husband exited the vehicle to inspect the vehicle, and another person stopped to assist and became aware that the ball joint had detached. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering knuckle had separated from the strut assembly, causing the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under warranty. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V203000 (STEERING); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2014 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated that while attempting to register the vehicle, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 86,000, and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 190,000.

Auxiliary power will not turn off when vehicle is turned off. Radio , lights interior power , etc….. car turns off when button is pressed but interior power does not .

I was waiting at a traffic signal to make a left turn, with my foot on the brake. The car accelerated aggressively, with no warning, like the pedal was pushed to the floor. I stood on the brake and shoved the shifter into park - coming to a stop in the middle of the intersection, Fortunately my wheels were pointed straight and the car did not race into oncoming traffic. My [XXX] father was in the car with me. Thankfully, my grandchildren were NOT in the car. You could smell the gas and brakes. It was NOT driver foot placement, nor was it floor mats. Vehicle has ~ 75K miles, and I am terrified of this happening again. I had driven this car regularly in rush hour stop & go traffic for years with no event like this ever before. Car fails to shut off completely. The motor stops, but the electronics (dash, radio, etc.) and things like the A/C still are on. Searching forums shows it is a faulty gear shift sensor that detects that the car is in park.

There is a pressure crack that goes almost all the way across my front windshield, there are no chips or dings in the glass. Second you can smell gas fumes near the back of the car but no gas is leaking

In the past year the car has consistently given a “Set to P” message when parked and already shifted to Park, and doesn’t completely turn off (though the engine does). We have to turn the car back on, jam the car to P and try again. Internet tells me this was recalled for 2013-2014 cx-5s just before vehicles starting with the same VIN info as mine.

We have had numerous times that the vehicle ignition system will not turn off after pushing the stop button. The motor will stop but the ignition and radio system stay on. UNKNOWN - A few months ago, I started to have an issue when turning off the vehicle. After putting the vehicle in park and pressed to turn off the vehicle, the radio/GPS screen would stay on and a warning message stating the car must be in ‘P’ark. I would restart the car, put it in neutral, turned it off, but the same message kept popping up and would beep at me when trying to close the door. This seem like a safety hazard not knowing if the car is actually in park and turned off so the battery doesn’t drain. There should be a recall issued by Mazda to correct this issue as many people have posted the same problem over many years.

When the vehicle is put in park and the button is pressed to turn off the vehicle, the radio display screen stays on. I have to recrank the car, put it in a different gear, and then back into park and try again. Sometimes I do this process up to 10 times in order for the display screen to turn off. Vehicle was at highway speed when the warning light for high engine coolant temperature came on with a warning message to stop the vehicle in a safe place. The engine stopped and I was almost hit by a semi-truck as I was struggling to move over a lane to stop on the side of the highway. Car was inspected in April of 2021. The front of car started making knocking or clunking sounds on the right side. 2 weeks later, while making a U-turn instead of getting on the interstate, there was a loud crunch/crash sound. It sounded like a garbage can went under the vehicle. Upon further investigation, realized that the right ball joint somehow dropped out of the knuckle. This forced the axle to pop out and further damaged the rest of the suspension components. Thank god this didn’t happen on the highway with my wife and 2 toddlers in the car- that would have been horrific.

The car wouldn’t fully turn off once it parks. Have to keep playing turn on/off game until it fully turn off. And apparently Mazda know about the issue but refuse to do anything. Other people are saying it’s a engine sensor issue.

I as well as many other mazda cx5 owners have experienced the same issue where the suv will not power off when the push to start button is pressed. The suv requires you to power it back on and shut it off several times before it actually shuts down. The radio and other accessories will not shut off when the car is powered down. Resulting in serious issues possibly happening if the car is not shut down properly. Anyone could get in and start the vehicle back up if they wanted to. Stolen vehicles. There is a defect that leads to the car not turning off property. Reading on various forums, it seems this is a very common problem in Mazda CX-5s. I have spent over $1500 recently on this car, and now this? My battery dies overnight because the car doesn't not fully shut down in park. Again, this is all over the forums. People are getting stranded. It's terribly unsafe.

Lower ball joints, lower control arms, and axles failed on the front right and front left of the vehicle while driving. The wheels were partially disconnected with no ability to steer or drive my vehicle. Both failures happened within 2 1/2 months. After the right side failed, the auto mechanic checked the left side yet it failed regardless of all inspections including the annual state requirement. During both failures I was fortunate to be driving through turns at slow rate of speed. Serious injuries and more likely casualties would have occurred had I been driving at a higher rate of speed through traffic when the failures occurred.

Over the past 2 weeks, it's be hard to turn the engine off. I put the car in park like normal, hit the engine off button. But then the car stays on and an alert on the dashboard says to put the car in park (even though it is already in park). Sometimes, taking the car out of park and then putting it back in park fixes the problem. Other times I have to do it several times or drive the car a little bit and then try again. It's been getting more frequent lately and happens several times a day.

Front passenger side CV Axle/Boot, control arm, tie rod end fell apart causing tire to dislocate from vehicle. Vehicle has been properly maintained. It is at Mazda dealer service dept. It can be inspected there. If this fell apart on freeway it could have caused a major accident and loss of life. Dealer has not confirmed problem yet, awaiting their inspection. There were no warning signs or symptoms or messages.System passed previous Mazda service multi point inspection. Incident occurred out of the blue.

After pushing the button to turn my car off, the engine turns off but none of the electronics does. I have to turn my car on and off numerous times to get the navigation/radio screen to turn off, I'm a single woman and I don't want to come back to my car to find a dead battery late at night with no one around. This issue should be a recall from Mazda. It's not a wear and tear kind of problem, after many complains they actually changed the specifics of the new part, showing that they know it was defective.

Strong gasoline odor outside the vehicle. I verified that the gas cap is locked after filling up. I see no dash board warning lights that would suggest that there is a problem with the fuel cap or fuel system. The odor is still there even after running the tank down considerably. The smell is mostly detected on the driver side of the vehicle starting at the driver door and moving toward the rear of the vehicle where the fuel door is positioned. The smell is there in warm and cooler weather. It is 60 degrees F and I can smell .it.

The car will not shut off while in park when you push the start/stop button. it stays in ACC mode. It takes multiple times to completely shut the car off.

Car will not sense that it is in park. It constantly says to put car in park when it already is. The car needs to be turned On and off several times to get it to work and one time it took 45 minutes. It happens nearly every day. It’s been going on for months and I’ve had 3 shops look at it. I called Mazda as well and they acted like they never heard of such a thing. Searching online it is very common with the make and model and year of the car.

Water is able to get into the back lift gate and has caused the latch to deteriorate and go bad making it unable to be opened and causing a safety issue for the consumer

While driving on an urban road and going over a slight bump, heard a clunk in the left rear wheel well. Pulled over and off road to investigate the situation. Was unable to see any particular cause in the rear suspension. However a small piece of corroded aluminum fell onto the ground from up inside the wheel well. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and the diagnosis was that both aluminum rear shock mounting plates were corroded. The left rear shock had separated from the mounting plate. The service station was unable to locate-acquire new mounting plates, hence had to have both shocks completely replaced on Aug. 19, 2021. I believe this problem represents a risk to the public, a potentially serious safety issue. I have a photo of the repair invoice and imagine the repair shop can confirm the basic problem. I located a Mazda email contact address and emailed them regarding the issue this evening.

My 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring has recently started experiencing an issue widely reported online related to the battery. The issue is the electrical/ignition system fails to turn the battery off when the vehicle is turned off. In other words, the car engine shuts down, but the accessory power (battery) remains on. This can be identified by the clock and dashboard display remaining on. This is a significant issue because unless the battery is turned off, it will become drained, and the car will fail to start. This can leave the driver stranded and the car incapacitated. It is very easy to fail to notice the accessory power is still on. I have reported the issue to Mazda at the customer line - 1800-222-5500 and they have no outstanding warranties or recalls related to this. My reference number is 1-4272020134. I have also contacted a local Mazda dealer and they are unfamiliar with the issue. Per customer reports, the issue is related to a faulty sensor on the battery. To reproduce the issue: 1) Put car in park 2) Push power button. Car engine turns off. Battery remains on. My 2014 Mazda CX5 will not shut off when I push the on/off button. I have to move the shifter from left to right real hard a couple of times, then continue to try until it finally shuts off when you push the button. It apparently is a sensor on the transmission, however I am unable to pay for this at this time. The IGNITION DOES NOT TURN OFF WHEN PRESSING START / STOP BUTTON. So you can't even turn the car off more then 1/2 the time. You have to disconnect the battery.

The auxillary power stays on after car is put into PARK and the engine is turned off. The car is not registering that it is in park. The auxillary power remains on. It takes several attempts of turning car on and back off again and moving the shifter before the car will turn off completely.

For the last couple of months every time I place my car in park and press the PUSH START/OFF BUTTON- the car does not completely shut off. So I start the car again, move the gear shift out of park all the way back into drive and back into park again in hopes when I push off button it will cut off. It is a gamble. Now I am having to cut the car on and off almost 6 times in a row to get it to cut off completely. Not only is it causing incredible wear and tear on my vehicle, it is a horrible defect that seems like it will be dangerous and costly in the long run. I think Mazda should recall this issue and fix it promptly!

Ignition light stays on, car turns off but battery and dash lights stay on continuously. You have to repeatedly turn car off and on and raddle shifter to turn off, this causes depletion of batter and can DANGEROUSLY leave one or ones family stranded and in a bad situation. This problem has been stated by numerous consumers on the website. Contacted my mazda dealership and technitain agreed that they have come upon this issue quite a lot, charging for diagnostics and labor $100's of dollars, possible issues with break or parking switch. Problem can be possibly fixed but what if it occurs again a few months or year down the road, leading to a never ending viscous $bill$ cycle. I'm very concerned about a depleted battery, I also contacted cooperate and representative informed my conversation was recorded and will be hopefully looked into but as of yet nothing has been done, rep informed me to contact NHTSA.GOV and here I am. I was surprised of the many consumers on the web having this issue, I had been having numerous battery issues and was replaced...THIS HAS TO BE LOOKED INTO AND A RECALL BE INSTITUTED ASAP. A VEHICLE NOT SHUTTING OFF RESULTING IN A DEPLETED BATTERY THEN BEING STRANDED IS VERY CONCERNING, WORRISOME AND DANGEROUS IF THERE'S NO HELP AROUND.

The car will not shut off. If you put it in park and press the start/stop engine button the car radio and accessories are still on. You have to shift gears several times keeping foot on the brake and keep trying until it turns off.
