2016 Kia Sorento complaints

A rain storm came and I left my car out of the garage and the rain peeled off huge parts of my paint. There is no reason that my car last paint should have been washed off from rain.

I have a 2016 Snow White Kia Sorento that the paint is coming off of. Paint is coming off from the hood, above drivers side door and above back hatch.

I have been the first owner of my Kia Sorento car and it has always been well maintained. The oil change has always been done on time. I was driving on the highway going 65mph when out of nowhere the check engine started flashing, a rattling noise started, and I noticed it wouldn’t accelerate. There was never any warning lights of any kind to warn me of something malfunctioning. I had a mechanic check it and said there was an oil loss and affected the engine and I would have to replace it. He mentioned that there has been a lot of issues about the engine failing in Kias but that there is still no recall for it. I have read so many articles of this being true and Kia should fix this! It is definitely a hazard driving a Kia car that does not warn you of the oil loss causing a failed engine.

The engine gave out while driving on the highway going 65-70 mph on the left lane ,vehicle started shaking and slowing down really loud cars started going around luckily I was able to get to the right breakdown lane as it stalled. I could have caused a major accident on the highway, I restarted the car it shakes as I drove it slowly to the exit at every light the car stalled when I stopped. Brought to the dealer they confirmed the engine is gone , no prior warning of any issue. Car isn’t even paid off til next month! They state only option is to put a new engine which is lots of money.

The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling in a drive-thru line, the engine temperature gauge increased to the "high" position and the engine overheated causing engine coolant to leak from the engine compartment with white smoke coming from the exhaust system. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the head gasket was blown. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact was informed that the replacement engine was on backorder. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 99,820.

The engine (I think engine) stalls out, and several times the engine has completely died. Almost causing me and the other car involved a very serious accident. The vehicle stalls when sitting at the traffic light and I go to turn to accelerate and it stalls and after pushing/tapping the gas pedal repeatedly it will eventually stop and I'm able to then drive on. Also the car does not shift properly at all, it winds up and seems the get stuck and have to try accelerate before it shift. I keep getting errors on my dash saying "possible engine condition, please press schedule service" and then I run the diagnostic report and this is what it says CATEGORY (2) PowerTrain P0456 Evaporative Emission System - Leak Detected (Very Small Leak) Possible condition(s) with your Engine Control System has been detected. I have filed a complaint with the South Carolina Attorney General which is pending and spoke with KIA Consumer Affairs twice about the failure of the Knock Sensor device which has caused engine failure in my 2016 KIA Sorento. I was told by KIA Consumer Affairs that the Upgrade Knock Sensor Campaign was mailed to the first owner of the vehicle in 2018 and was not replaced. I bought the SUV in November 2019 from Carvana. I have the original carfax report which states No Recalls on my SUV. I had no knowledge of the knock sensor upgrade Campaign and of course didn't receive a Recall notice. The only Recall notice I have received, just recently, is for a wiring harness for tow hitch, however, I don't have the tow pkg./hitch on my SUV. Until my engine failed due to the knock sensor, I had no indication of anything being wrong with the SUV. KIA refuses to pay for the engine replacement. My SUV is still at the dealership service dept. until this is resolved. I am a [XXX] lady with 32 years Federal Service with the Veterans Administration in SC. I do not have the money nor should I have to pay for the engine replacement. It's a lot of money! I am appealing for your help to force KIA to take responsibility and replace the engine. The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55-60 MPH, a loud explosion was heard coming from the vehicle. The vehicle then lost motive power. No warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that there was a hole in the bottom part of the engine, causing oil to leak from the engine. The dealer informed the contact that the engine, starter, and exhaust manifold needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The manufacturer denied the engine replacement. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000. The contact stated the safety issue of the vehicle losing all power without warning while driving is due to a specific engine that Kia installed in several of its cars/suvs. It is called a Theta II engine that was used in 2.0 and 2.4 liter cars.

Paint bubbling/chipping on multiple areas of my car. Concerned for rusting and further damage to my car. Paint chipping was first noticed in 2021 and it has progressively gotten worse since.

Since 2019, the power steering for my Kia Sorento has failed on at least 30 occasions while my vehicle is in motion, placing vehicle occupants and nearby drivers at significant risk of a serious accident. All failures have the following in common: - Vehicle becomes very difficult to steer and requires significant arm strength to turn the wheel to either the left or the right - The red EPS warning light illuminates, no other warning lights nor alarms - The steering wheel feels a minor shudder before fully locking - Upon stopping them vehicle, placing in park, turning the engine off, and then turning the engine back on, the EPS warning light is no longer illuminated and the steering is restored ("as if nothing happened") - There no known common causes, such as vehicle speed, temperature, nor any other triggers which cause this error, as a driver, there is the distinct chance that it can happen at ANY time Documented instances8 with video include: 11/20/2021 8/2/2022 8/4/2022 8/18/2022 (highway speed, specified in Additional Details) 8/24/2022 3/13/2024 Kia America issued an "MDPS Warranty Extension Notice" on January 7 2022 which appears to be specific to this problem sine it references EPS warning light, however this is a categorically insufficient response by Kia since it offers no clear remediation to address the actual acknowledgment by the manufacturer of their problem, offering coverage "if the diagnosis indicates the condition" but stating "vehicle steering will continue

The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked when the contact attempted to open the trunk, however, the trunk failed to open. The contact stated that the failure recurred multiple times and after multiple attempts, the trunk was able to open. The contact stated that the failure continued to recur and the trunk became inoperable. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The contact stated that there were no warning lights illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and they informed the contact that the warranty did not cover the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.

On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, I was driving my vehicle to work. I have a 12 mile commute and take both highways and local roads. When I started driving, I noticed that the engine would make a knocking/rattling sound when I accelerated. While in the final mile of my commute, I stopped at a stoplight. When the light turned green and I applied my foot to the accelerator, the vehicle did not respond and dashboard lights for the oil, engine and battery all illuminated. These lights did not illuminate at anytime prior to this point. Being that I was on local roads, I was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. I turned off the engine and attempted to restart. The engine did not start but all other electric components in the vehicle appeared functional. Roadside assistance attempted asses whether the vehicle had a dead battery using a portable battery back but were also unable to start the vehicle. The vehicle had to be flatbed towed to the dealership. After a week, I was informed that the engine had seized and was non-responsive. As of this date (3/18/24), I am still waiting for backordered parts and do not have an ETA for the return of my vehicle. I also have not been provided a loaner.

Check engine light turned on. The crankshaft has given out and the mechanic confirmed it needs a new engine. Cylinders 2&4 are misfiring. It has a rough idle and does not accelerate. Many online forms confirm that this is a Kia problem and different years have had a recall. I can not drive my car due to the shaking of the car and the unknown of possible breaking down. It revs up high before it shifts gears and shakes.

The paint is coming off in chunks. We have a white 2016 kia sorento. We noticed a few areas shortly after bought it but now bigger pieces are missing. We did research and noticed other similar vehicles are having the same issue.

In December 2022 while driving at various speeds, the vehicle began to overheat. No warning lights illuminated. I pulled over and let the engine cool down. Then coolant was added to the reservoir. I waited before restarting the vehicle. I took the vehicle to an independent mechanic the next day and was informed that the head gasket was blown, and the engine would likely need to be replaced. Kia dealership was contacted and notified. The vehicle was not repaired.

Gear shift will not shift into Park and car will roll where parked depending on the incline. It also will not start unless I use the shifter bypass with a small screwdriver to shift it into neutral to start and then shift into reverse or drive.

Paint peeling and bubbling. Started at 45,000 miles and is now very bad on good, above windshield this makes my car look terrible I see many other pearl white ones with this issue. Kia stated paint is not in warranty. I feel they should honor the quality of their paint on cars

The engine overheated. We were able to get to a place and stop. We continue to have overheating issues. An independent shop believes it is being caused by the issue of stripped head bolts. They advised I take it to the Kia dealer who denies being able to recreate the overheating. No further inspection has taken place. The temp gauge was topping out but no other warning lights or gauges were triggered. After reading numerous other accounts of issues with this engine in this car I was concerned about continuing to drive the vehicle for fear of being stranded or the engine seizing while driving.

I was driving on an interstate coming down a mountain and my car stopped accelerating. The check engine light also began flashing. I glided along the interstate to the nearest exit. I had my car towed to a mechanic who told me my engine blew due to a defect in my engine. Months prior to this incident, my car would not retain oil so I took it to Kia and they replaced my oil gasket thinking that was the issue. However, it turns out the problem was with a defect in my engine. This is a very dangerous issue. Please please recall these cars.

My 2016 Kia Sorento 3.3 L V6 starting over heating and smoking and loss of power and would no start when it was running hot. In January of 2023. We towed the car to Kia and they could not find the problem told us we need to replace the thermostat for $1000 and that would fix the problem we left and had it towed away. We took the car to a radiator shop two days later and they change the water pump and thermostat. The overheating continued we took it back to the radiator shop and they performed a head gasket pressure test and the car failed and they said the head gasket was leaking and we need to get the heads repaired they quoted $6900. We later took the car to a engine rebuilder and they certified that the heads gasket was blown with the same test and the bolts were wore off on the cylinder heads and the engine needed to be rebuilt or replaced. We went to Kia they did not do anything. We had to get the engine totally rebuilt on our cost total cost $4712.04 and it took 3 months to find all the Kia parts . KIA issued a letter to cover the repairs for these engines and this model on Janurary 2, 2024 and it and has not been paid it has been sixty days which was there time frame in the letter to cover the claim they won't answer us at all with a verdict the most terrible car company around .

While driving this evening my power steering light came on and shortly after I lost all power steering. Had I not been strong enough while pulling out of the flow of traffic I would have lost control and hit a vehicle or run off the roadway. After turning the vehicle off it would not restart without a jump start. This same vehicle had its engine replaced not long ago for a separate safety issue mentioned in ODI 11565586. Kia of America needs to be forced to fix the issues with this vehicle. Other numerous reports of these same issues exist. These issues need to be investigated and Kia held accountable. This vehicle is a lemon and still under warranty but I feel I have no recourse and I'm being forced to be without the vehicle I paid for for long spans of time. This vehicle is a huge safety issue for myself and others.

My 2016 Kia Sorento burns excessive amount of oil and Kia fails to fix the problem regardless of the warranties on the vehicle. The engine was never inspected by the dealer!

Car excessively burns oil. Within 1,000 miles burned through about 4qts of oil with no type warning light. Refilled with 4 more quarts then burned within 3 weeks of average driving. Vehicle only has 90k miles wirth no sign of oil being burned or oil stains in normal parking area.

Driving on freeway and car suddenly would no longer accelerate over 40mph. Pulled off the freeway and large amounts of white smoke was coming from the exhaust. Turned off engine, looked under the hood and saw engine coolant bubbling. Attempted to restart car and it would no longer start. The car was towed to a Kia dealership and diagnosed as head bolts backing out of cylinder head causing leak and pressure with coolant and oil mixture. I was told my engine would need to be replaced.

My started leaking oil prefusly one day. Started car went down the street 5 mins and came back . My drive way has puddles of oil. Leaking fast . Too it to kwik car they informed me that I have a leak in the turbocharger. It’s leaking into my exhaust. I got the oil added to the car yesterday and today my oil is already low and almost empty.

While driving the auto lights shut off and I must turn on lights. This has happened a few times

My name is [XXX] Owner of KIA SORENTO 2016 V6 At the begging of this year in early January , my automobile starting showing extremely overheating conditions. My wife was taking our kids to school on a cold weather, 15 minutes from home and as she was arriving to the school parking lot she noticed the temperature indicator up to (H) mark, she then notice a loud buzzing sound coming from the engine.She parked the car immediately as she could , shutdown the engine and asked my kids to leave the car immediately . She called me very frightened and worry about my kids safety and hers. She said that she was able to shutdown the engine but the temperature indicator stayed on H mark and the buzzing sound was still on. Then, I remember receiving a latter from Kia Corporate Headquarters, extending the warranty on my car on mid December 2023. The letter states that the warranty has been extended because it's a potential overheating and coolant leaking that it has been related to the cylinder head gasket and head bolts. We reached out to a dealer right after the incident and on [XXX] we took our car for inspection and acknowledge the mechanical problem. All the sings of the fail system of the engine are present in my car. My car has been at the dealer since [XXX] and as of now Kia Corporate has fail to proceed with the approval of the repairs of my car. I have been renting cars all this time and the dealer personal said they can't approve to pay any rental until Kia Corporate Headquarters

While driving the car, the engine temperature started fluctuating and finally reached over temp. The engine failed. I towed the car to my mechanic and initially thought that the head gasket had blown. However, upon inspection, they found that the engine head bolt to the engine block was damaged. The threads were stripped. The only repair option for this problem was to replace the engine block. I believe the engine on this vehicle is a 3.3-liter Lambda II V6. This car only had 87,000 miles on it.

The Engine failed at 79,000 miles due to the known defect with their 2016 Kia Sorento engines. Kia is unwilling to honor their recall due to not completing what they refer to as a Product Improvement prerequisite. Kia admitted these Product Improvements are only communicated to original owners and not published through any recall so a consumer that purchased a pre owned vehicle would have no way of knowing about this unless they ask for it specifically at a Kia dealership.

The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that the engine was empty of engine oil a week after an oil change. After oil was added, the contact's husband observed that a quart of oil had been consumed in a few days. The vehicle was initially taken to an independent mechanic, and it was discovered that excessive oil sludge and hard carbon build-up was in the valve and stems. The contact was also informed that the piston rings were worn and that there was scoring on the cylinder walls. The contact also stated that while driving at 55 MPH, the engine oil warning light flashed on the instrument panel and the vehicle stalled. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with piston failure and a misfire in cylinder #2. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000.

Steering on car felt sticky or as if power steering was not working. It seems to be an intermittent problem occurring mostly at highway speeds of approximately 60 mph. It seems to be a safety issue because steering feels unresponsive to feel of steering wheel. Dealer says that I will have to bring it in where they can diagnose to confirm. If problem continues I will take it in to be checked. Vehicle has not given any warnings or indications of problems/service needed. The problem was first noticed on 02/12/2024 and then again on 02/23/2024.

Engine failed Kia decided that part is Not covered under warranty and dealer expects us to pay $6500 This car is only 8 years old, 88,500 miles. How can Kia sell faulty engines and still expect someone to pay outrageous price to repair their junk cars?!

Turbo feed pipe, high pressure fuel line, oil feedline gaskets, oil return line gaskets, turbo oil feed line. problems started happening in 2016 with turbo. 2020-2024 seem to be having problems with turbo lines and oil lines and nothing seems to be connected. in 2020 something happened and lost oil but no lights came on. also, have had more recalls on this vehicle than any other one i have owned. if there is a problem with this engine or turbo, i just wanted to have my concerns recorded.

Driving loud pop and crunch white smoke loss of power vehicle would not start after found prices of head underneath vehicle. Known issue with the 3.3 leaking coolant into engine and failing

It was determined by a local mechanic that the engine was damaged due to a internal rod busting through the block of the engine. This caused an immediate shutdown of the vehicle in the middle of traffic on a cold night with my 7-month old daughter in the vehicle. I suppose it could have been worse if the engine had caught fire or if we were on the highway, thankfully we were barely accelerating from a stop light. The engine has not been inspected by Kia as they claimed it would cost over $300 to just look at it, and it is well known from the original mechanic what the issue was. We did contact Kia about it but they were unwilling to fix the issue. We were quoted over $10000 for a replacement engine but that was all the help we got. Prior to this sudden destruction of our engine all normal oil changes and maintenance had been done and there were no warning lights on the dash.

The engine of the vehicle and other parts had a problem which had caused the vehicle to not accelerate fast enough. It also made the car shake when it was stopped. The component that is malfunctioning is available for inspection. If the car does not accelerate on the road, then it can cause a crash which can lead to injuries or even death. Especially if the car has to turn left and other cars are incoming, it can lead to serious issues if the car does not go fast enough. It can lead to injuries to the driver and the passengers. The vehicle was initially put for inspection to the manufacturer in Lou Sobh Kia, "fixed", and then was given back in a condition where the effects stated above continued to occur. We then took the vehicle back to the manufacturer where they further reviewed the car. They reviewed it again and did not tell us enough information about the issues going on with the car. Since we did not think they were reviewing the car properly, we took it Rick Case Kia where they were able to spot out the engine problem. It was also reviewed by a Korean service center and Good Year where they both told us that it was an engine and timing belt/chain problem, whereas Lou Sobh Kia weren't able to properly capture the issue. Both the engine light and oil light were on which is why we took it to Kia Lou Sobh, and they first appeared around October-November 2023.

Son's vehicle began overheating, so he took to his mechanic. Determined that the thermostat in the cooling system was bad and replaced it. About a week later (2/2/24), sitting at a stoplight, car began to overheat again. Took back immediately to mechanic and determined that the head gasket needed to be replaced. Waited 17 days only to find out when mechanic went to replace head gasket, discovered the threads in the block were pulled out. Now looking at replacing engine block for a lot more time and money. Seems to be common issue with this model and should be a recall.

I bought this vehicle 2/1/24. I have taken to Valvoline for the past 5 oil changes. On each receipt it showed an engine oil leak. on 2/16/24 I smelled something burning. So I checked the oil level and found that it was almost empty. There was Not an engine oil light warning that the oil is low. I took my vehicle back to Valvoline to have them check it. They told me that they noted on each of the invoices that there was an engine oil leak. I had only driven 2000 miles since my last oil change and the oil level should not be this low. This should not be happening.

We were driving on the [XXX] on [XXX] with a speed of around 70 miles per hour. We started to see a small amount of white smoke coming from under the hood and at the same time the truck started to slow down by itself unexpectedly and then started to jerk back and forth. No indicators showed up on the dashboard. The speed reduced quickly and hitting the gas pedal did nothing to accelerate our speed. The white smoke started to increase and it became difficult to see. We then saw the temperature gauge go all the way up to hot out of nowhere. There were vehicles all around us and the passengers in the car started to yell to try to get to the shoulder. We had to maneuver very quickly through traffic with the car continuing to jerk at a very slow speed, which was very scary and dangerous. We were finally able to slowly get over to the shoulder. We turned off the truck. When we opened the hood, white smoke was everywhere coming from the engine and the coolant in the plastic receptacle was bubbling. The coolant looked like it was about to explode and the driver got burned trying to remove the cap. There was significant heat coming from the engine. The coolant then drained out of the receptacle. When we tried to start the truck again it would not start. We spend hours trying to get a tow to a shop in NJ miles from where we live in NY. Several days later, the mechanic in NJ took a look at the car and he reported this week that the head gasket is blown and that we need a new engine. We

Car was stalling like it was going to shut off. Took to a licensed mechanic where I'm being told that I have a faulty engine. Was told to take my Kia back to the dealership that I brought it from and if they give me kick back call corporate. Now they saying they can't fix my car due to my warranty being out.

The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the vehicle was overheating. The contact veered to the side of the road. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that there was sufficient coolant in the coolant reservoir, but there was no coolant in the radiator. The contact stated that the failure recurred. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that coolant was leaking out of the coolant reservoir due to pressure. The contact received notification of TSB Number: WTY035, which was related to the failure. The dealer was contacted and advised the contact to take the vehicle to their location for repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the repair could take 3-4 months. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

The paint on my car start peeling out of nowhere… the hood of the car 12/26/2023 and the roof of the car 2/09/2024 peeled off in the rain I have pictures and videos… Kia said warranty only covers 36000 miles or 3 years on the car so they couldn’t help me …plus as the paint peels u can see the car was painted with no primer for the paint to stick …. I paid my car off to have it fall apart on me this is not acceptable..my car only has 63000 miles it shouldn’t be falling apart already … I’m having issues with the engine burning excessive oil .. Please help a very concerned client

I was driving 78 mph on the interstate when my car did a hard snatch and I thought I hit something in the road I didn't see. I looked in rearview mirror and saw white/blue smoke and I looked down and all the dash lights started coming on. I slowed down and pulled off the side of the road and the engine turned off before I put it in park. Oil is pouring out of the bottom of the motor area. No warning lights, no limp mode or any warnings at all.

While accelerating on the turnpike after going through the tollbooth the engine seized with no warning. We were stranded. My family including my two small children were in the vehicle at the time. It has been confirmed by the repair shop. No lights appeared on the dash in relation to the vehicle stalling.

The coolant system depressurizes due to steel head bolts into the aluminum block. While driving, the coolant system released all pressurized coolant out of the coolant overflow tank. The engine began to overheat without warning in the middle of traffic while transporting children. Kia has sent out an Extended Warranty to all 2016-2017 Sorento owners to attempt to remedy the issue. Our dealership was able to reproduce the issue. We're being advised a 60-90-day wait on the engine/parts to resolve the claim. This should be filed as a recall and resolved promptly. 2-3 months for a nationwide extended recall is an absurd amount of time without a vehicle.

My car was driving fine and then on Saturday we went to our daughters birthday party and the car started making noises and you could see white smoke coming out the back of the car. We were getting off the highway and thankfully we pulled over. We saw engine oil just spilling out. There were no warning lights beforehand. We took it to a shop and they said the oil burned a hole through the engine. I am very upset as I am still paying on the car and my only option would be to pay 5000 to have it repaired or they repossess my vehicle.

Blown head gasket.. needle went to H .. no warning lights came on dash.. white smoke from tail pipe.. coolant smell inside car.. about 8 months ago.. talked to Kia then.. 108000 miles.. warranty expired.. has been parked secondary Kia wanted a lot of money ..told to hang on to it cause lots of complaints about head gaskets..thank you..warranty extended.. at Kia dealership in ft smith ar.. probably be there a year cause they don’t seem to known much and have that reputation.

Oil consumption with no low oil light.

The shift suddenly locked when put in park...need to use the shift lock release to unlock it.

The engine died as I was driving on the freeway at 70 mph. My safety was at risk. I thank God the other drivers on the freeway were paying attention and as I slowly made it to the side of the freeway before it completely stopped rolling. The vehicle is still at the Kia dealership. The vehicle had been burning through oil very badly.
