Jeep put out a recall for the transmission and the recall was supposedly done the recall states that it would correct the issue of the car putting itself into neutral at any speed and making the driver return to park before he could re-enter a gear and redistribute power to the wheels. The recall should make the car go into a limp mode with limited power yet still producing power so it can exit from the roadway it's not doing that and this doesn't matter if it's 70 miles an hour when this happens it cuts the power to the wheels and your only option is to try to get out of traffic put the car in park and put it back in the gear. the recall by jeep was S 55 says it's been done but this car again is putting itself in the neutral it's been to three different Jeep dealers and finally I took it to an independent mechanic that finally figured out that this was probably the issue Jeep doesn't care I was almost hit by an 18-wheeler going through the mountains 2 weeks ago when the car took itself out of of gear and put itself into neutral as I was doing a pretty nasty switch from downhill to uphill in the Rocky Mountains with a semi coming down right behind me. I lost power on the uphill side on a three-lane highway on the innermost Lane with nowhere to go. I had no power I could not get back across traffic to get off the highway I ended up stopping traffic just put the car back in the park to restart hi feel like this is an incredible safety hazard and it clearly if they did the recal

While driving on a moderately busy highway, felt the automatic transmission engage a gear shift down accompanied by a loud clunking sound and vehicle shudder. Immediately lost throttle control - stepping on the gas pedal didn't rev the engine/effect the vehicle RPMs, increase speed, or allow for any retention of control of the vehicle's speed beyond braking - and was fortunately able to put my hazards on and coast to the side of the road. If traffic had been any busier or I had been changing lanes at an on or off ramp this could have absolutely caused a collision through several common scenarios. "Service Transmission" lamp came on on instrument panel and the display screen in the center of the panel said Transmission failure, but no previous lamps or warning preceded this occurrence. Turned the vehicle off and visually inspected the engine compartment and beneath the vehicle, but neither showed any obvious issues or damage. Tentatively turn the vehicle back on, and while the service transmission lamp remained lit, no warning message displayed on the central display. Put vehicle in drive, and a softer "clunk" sound accompanied the gear engaging, but not as loudly as the initial sound. Was able to return to my residence using back roads with my hazards on, but experienced less power at stops to resume normal speeds. Pressing on the gas pedal returned very little increases in speed and even slight inclines were a challenge to go up. After less than a mile, the service transmiss
Leaving to go get Wife's computer today my Jeep ran terrible, kept trying to stall I just filled up at Costco to top off the tank yesterday. In the next subdivision after passing through the back gate the transmission "D" light started blinking. Pressing the gas pedal at 15 miles an hour did nothing. No forward acceleration nor any acceleration at all. Just coasted to pull over where I could safely as the Jeep coasted powerless. Pressing the gas peddle barely raised RPMs like a throttle car would have done. I had to stop the Jeep put it in park and then put it back in "D" drive and it at least my jeep moved forward when pressing the gas peddle. As I continued to drive out through the subdivision towards a main street, the transmission kept clunking and thumping. Felt like the transmission was loose and dangling under the Jeep, but it is still securely bolted to the Jeep. I decided to go back get Wife's car and drop the stupid Jeep off at the dealer again to find out what's wrong with it. At least if it broke down on the side of the road I could run our errands. This constant problem is a major safety concern. If this happens on the interstate it can easily cause a major crash. The dealer can't figure out what is wrong, or so they claim. This happens every couple of months. I don't trust Jeep to keep me safe while driving. This needs to be investigated so owners know the truth.
The parking brake is stuck on and cannot be disengaged Just happened today trying to go home, car sat for 7 hrs, I did not put the parking brake on No mechanic has seen it yet
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the headlights and high beams were not working properly; then independently switched to a different setting. There were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The approximate failure mileage was 44,000.
Took our Jeep into dealership - Tom O’Brien Jeep in Greenwood, IN because check engine light was on. Was told it the codes were low voltage & the battery needed to be replaced which we did. Within 15 minutes of picking up the car, the check engine light was on again along with. 4WD message. Took it back to same dealership. Now we’re told PTU was going out & to get rid of the car. There is no recall on my VIN but was told there is an issue with the Cherokees & the PTU’s going bad. I’m reporting this issue so in can be included in your data.
On any drives at freeway miles that last for longer then about 45 minutes the vehicle sends a false service transmission light which puts the card in limp mode forcing the driver to come to a stop on the freeway. Within the first week of me buying the car, I was traveling cross country from CA to FL. I discovered in CA within an hour of the start of the trip this because the vehicle forced me to stop in the middle of the desert because of this I was forced to sit in the desert for 30 minutes waiting on a tow truck. When I turned the car back on the check engine light was on but the car was out of limp mode so I drove it to CarMax in Vegas (after having to do this three more times and stopping to get food to let the car rest. Vegas told me the car was 100% fine and called the dodge close to them who said it's just a "dummy light" and to just pull over and it'll be okay and I wouldn't be causing any damage to the transmission or engine. After traveling all the way across the country over 7 days in all climates the vehicle continued to do this at night in cool temperatures, with no total drives longer then 2-4 hours. Once we arrived in Tampa FL it seemed to go away and is fine in city driving however I was out ubering one night in the city at night and it popped up as well forcing me to stop in the middle of the road. It did this on a recent trip to Jacksonville as well from Tampa which forced us to pull over four times on a 70 degree day. I have beent told by Jeep if I want it
OME Oil Filter Housing is made of plastic and it cracked, causing the Jeep to leak oil. This is a common issue with the 3.2L and 3.6L jeep motors. So common that the original part has been discontinued and replaced with one made of metal. That fact that Jeep has discontinued the original part and replaced it with a better one should be grounds for a recall and be covered my Jeep. Instead I have to pay $200 for the part and because of the labor required to replace the part, my total bill is almost $1000.
Engine stalls without warning. One occurrence stalled while in reverse, steering wheel jerked 3 times. After every stall has had the warning "Four wheel drive temporarily unavailable". Also had one that flashed "ECU Off" this has occurred mostly at low speeds. Happened twice today making it the sixth and seventh occasion.
2014 jeep ptu I was driving turned left heard grinding towed to the dealer and they told me the ptu and transaxle spline wore out there’s a recall for this but apparently my jeep doesn’t meet that requirement even though it’s a 2014 jeep w47 is the number they refused to fix
After filling my jeep with gas this will cause the jeep to stalls then shuts off and all kinds of warnings and code appear. It will radom shut off and is extremely dangerous. Dealership could not diagnose . This is happening regularly. Goggle says many others have experienced this problem as well
As I pulled up to a stop light the transmission light blinked and the car started to stall. Sputtered for a second then went away. About 3 min after as I was pulling in front of vehicles when I turned the car stalled and died in traffic. Car wouldn’t restart for almost 30 sec but in traffics felt like a lifetime. Finally started and was able to pull off road but as I sat there car just would seem like the transmission was catching and stall out.
Heavy water leaks in the back trunk area, unable to relase parking brake, ACC/FCW unavailable, powerd lift gate doest work some times. Sucked out at least 2 galons of water form the spare tire area, find serious corrosion in the electircal connector of the Electronic Parking Break Module located in the back truck area.
Randomly unable to retract electrical parking break, displays "servics parking break" . safety risk :if stopped on redlight and the parking break engaged , it won't release, unable to move the Vehicle .
Oil filter housing is leaking oil onto the engine and dripping on the ground leaving puddles. This is a problem with the 3.2 engine and the 3.6 engine. There are thousands of these engines on the road doing the same thing . Oil Filter Housing Defective.
Service four-wheel drive engine light came on took it to the shop and they said had a bad PTU I saw where there was a recall on certain 2014 thru 2017 dealer told me that mine was not eligible for recall because it was manufactured one month before recall vehicles started this seems to be a bunch bs they should replace the bad parts on all 2014 -2017 units not just pick and chose who's to replace after recall
Parking brake randomly engaged, while parked and will drive. I was driving in parking lot so no injury. Had towed for service. Found water in harness and parking brake module.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while the vehicle was stopped at a STOP sign, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle hesitated and jerked forward. The contact heard a noticeable grinding noise. The contact reported that the vehicle engine's hesitation, grinding, and jerking into motion became longer and very noticeable. The contact stated no warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed. The contact stated that while the mechanic was performing a test drive, the vehicle stalled and could not be moved. The mechanic reported that the power transfer unit had failed. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The independent mechanic notified the contact of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train). The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 113,145.
Started getting noise from behind engine when in drove. Took to mechanic. Diagnosed as bad PTU. No error messages or warning lights. Car has about 168k miles.
Lift gate will not latch(close)
Vehicle gets stuck in a gear when accelerating and will then slam into the next gear with substantial force! Force so great the driver would liken it to a broken driveshaft that was also just run over. A very loud bang is heard and the vehicle shakes abruptly from the shock. My wife who was riding with me assumed we had just been hit by another vehicle. This is an intermittent problem that can not always be replicated under the same driving conditions.
The oil filter adapter has cracked due to it being a plastic housing. Cold weather speeds up the process. The oil filter adapter also has a small torque tolerance for the cap that will also break the housing. This is available for inspection upon request. The safety concern is that the oil leaks out on top of the motor then down the sides and onto the exhaust below causing emission tests to fail. My dealer mentioned this is common but nothing official. The component has not been inspected by police or insurance. The dash indicators don’t come on till enough oil leaks out to display low oil level.
PTU failed at 20,000 miles (vehicle is driven only a few thousand miles per year). Had PTU replaced by dealer (at full dealer charges), but the problem persists and dealer now wants to replace the differential. This appears to be the exact problem meant to be covered by the 2018 (not certain of date ?) warranty extension to 8yrs/150,000, which assessment was confirmed by an independent repair shop. However the vehicle was manufactured a few months prior to the 2014 starting date of such extension and Jeep/Chrysler refuses to cover it. Because the vehicle is outside the covered period, I never received the warranty extension notice and have only just learned about the extension.
When trying to fuel the vehicle, the pump continually shuts off. Jeep repaired this once while under warranty, but it has happened a second time and an internet search confirms this is a known issue. It could be an issue with the evap hose design. The safety concern is the rate at which fuel is added to the tank. With this issue, the flow rate has to be reduced enough to allow the fumes to escape through the down flow spout which is a fire hazard if there are any sparks. At the lower flow rate, it's easy to overflow the tank as it's the only way to bypass the automatic shutoff.
PTU made loud grinding noice, wasn able to move vehicle from red light up the hill. Loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. Was able to move away from the road, felt like whole engine will jump out from the frame. It occured before I knew about W47 recall which is not an actual fix for this issue. Some torque still present, I can drive 3 mp/h on flat roads, not up on the minor hills. Now I simply don't know what to do because W47 recall not going to fix it and not going to prevent same issue after mechanical repair in the future.
Power Transfer Unit failed similar to other 2014 and later Jeep Cherokees but this VIN is not included in recall for those years.
The contact's grandson owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the power transfer unit (PTU) bolts had detached. The contact stated that the failure occurred twice. An unknown dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact's grandson that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.
The power transfer unit commonly referred to as the PTU on the jeep Cherokee is a faulty piece of equipment. Mine has been confirmed failing by the dealer and needs to be replaced. If not replaced the vehicle could lose propulsion and cause an accident. If it fails why the vehicle is parked it could release the wheels to spin and go down any incline it's parked on causing injury or death to anybody near it.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the 4-wheel drive system not available, service required," warning message would intermittently appear on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where a diagnostic test was performed, and the parts were ordered to repair the vehicle. Upon investigation, her husband discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) which he linked to the failure. The manufacturer was then notified of the failure and the contact was informed that her vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
My 14 jeep had a shift fault pop shift solenoid low voltage inJanuary of 2019. The dealership could not recreat the issue but the code was stored so I paid to replace valve body due to them not being able to fix shift solenoid 2years later and the fault returned went back to dealer ship and they can’t recreate problems and the fault code is in history. There’s a recall for wiring harness not crimped properly which will cause this issue.
I had purchased this 2014 jeep in the summer of 2021, which for the first many months was in the dealership repair shop longer than what I had it in my possession. After my purchase this vehicle immediately started having very strong jerking when hitting the exploratory, and even when attempting to hold a speed. These strong jerks were so strong it would cause your body to jolt forward. The dealership finally threw up their arms and said this was typical of the jeeps, and ignoring the danger. This vehicle has now been sitting in my driveway unable to start for over a month now, and was finally towed to another repair shop, just to learn that the starter is shot and needed to be replaced costing over $600.00 dollars. This vehicle is most definitely a dangerous lemon that it appears that I am stuck with.
I am the sole owner of 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. No miles when purchased. All recalls were kept up, all oil changes were made and vehicle has been taken care of. Without warning, my jeep started not excepting fuel or verily at all. Jeep was taken to the local dealership, that sold me the jeep. The air line that allows for vapor locking was completely filled with sediment and mud. After investigation by the dealer they the line had allowed for sediment and mud to overflow into the gas tank line, plugging it. I am now looking at a $2,000 repair bill to replace the air line and my gas tank as there is no way according to the dealer to get the sediment out because of the blockages. The air line and tank are in line with the back wheel well so it is poor manufacturing placement for this on the jeep and even if I do fix it, it will do it again in the future because of the way it was built. No warning lights, no recalls or help so from the Jeep company. Fortunately in my case I was not traveling and was within distance of the dealer otherwise it would have left me and my family stranded.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH and passing another vehicle, the transmission inadvertently shifted into neutral. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road and parked the vehicle. Then the contact shifted to drive and continued to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving and as she attempted to shift to drive, the vehicle downshifted to a lower gear. The contact continued to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that no issues were found. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who advised the contact that the failure was related to an unknown recall and to take the vehicle to the dealer for the recall repair. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the repair would be completed at her expense because the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist since the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 31,500.
The car says 4x4 not available and to service 4x4. Bad PTU.
Front lower control arm bushings and front and rear sway bar bushings are cracked.
The fuel tank has an abnormal amount of seepage. When filling with 87 octane gasoline, intermittently shortly after filling, the cars engine will completely stall while in motion. Also afterwards it may have trouble starting or be unable to start at all until waiting many minutes.
The PTU failed on a well maintained 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. The vehicle is available anytime for inspection upon request. My safety and others safety is at risk based on a very large scale of reports and articles regarding bad PTU for this vehicle. The SVC 4WD warning light came on my vehicle and the 4x4 system is not working. I took the vehicle to a Jeep dealership. The Jeep dealership performed a diagnostic and inspection of the vehicle and determined that this vehicle has a bad PTU. The dealership gave me a quote of $3,900 to replace the bad PTU.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently stall after refueling with the "shift vehicle into neutral" warning message displayed on the instrument panel. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who discovered that raw fuel would enter the charcoal canister due to a defective liquid air separator located on top of the fuel tank. The contact was also informed that the separator could not be replaced separately, and the entire fuel tank would need to be replaced. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure on two occasions and a complaint was filed. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
Hi I have a 2014 jeep Cherokee latitude and I have noticed my pedal acceleration lags and my transmission is shifting from 1st gear to 3 gear and skipping 2nd gear.. and when I'm driving it feels like the car is jerking all the times I step on the pedal. I read in 2019 Chrysler came out and said there was problem from the transmission, how do I get mine fixed??
December 13 5:30 am. Temp 29 deg. Daughter went to leave in Cherokee. Stated see heard noise from back after gear selector was put in reverse to back out went around 10’ when park brake warning ! With circle. ABS Air bag. I will say most warning light. My first thoughts were brakes were froze and failed to release. Didn’t understand how Vehicle had moved no drag marks also ? Daughter said it had not dragged tires. Vehicle was not driven “safety issue” Went to work so happens i am a ASE,EVT Master Technician for over 30 years and Repair Emergency vehicles daily. So I started to do a little research. Wow. I was amazed. This is a Known issue. Ref TSB 08-060-16 Park brake module water intrusion. Called local dealer Ref TSB for parts and labor was quoted $575 parts 700 labor with all required programming. PBM was in-stock no harness. Back home. Troubleshooting. Basic electrical check batt/grounds/fuse voltage ect. All good. Removed both rear tires check parking brake connector at actuator motors. Good. Performed inspection part of TSB. Connector for water intrusion yes! very obvious Continued with TSB removed Interior trim panels to access PBM and removed. Is mounted with connector facing up “problem” shook PBM could hear water inside.”problem” computer with water inside that controls all park parked function with data links tied to all the Vehicle ECUs there is a high possibility this could cause a lose of Vehicle control. Decided to reinstall and do a little testing on my own Wa
Gear shifter doesn’t want to move into drive when I start my car.
Our mileage/odometer is flashing and states TSB. The TCM has been reprogrammed 3-4 times and still malfunctioning. Electrical issues through out cause stereo to not turn on sometimes and the all the sudden turn on its own. We have made complaints to the jeep and they said the recall have already been done they wont help us and then close our case with out any solutions. We have already spent 2000 or more fixing issues that don't help the problem. We completely replaced the shifter and the whole assembly that goes with it. We have had a quick learn done to the transmission. We still had codes popping for the TCM prior to the shifter going out. We have had codes come up for the drive train and where told that recall was already done and we still have issues. We are at a loss here and dont know what else to do. We have only got this car a little over a year ago and have reported problems since day one.
This vehicle has a known issue that has been ongoing for years. If the gas tank is filled (but not topped off) the car will stall when you begin driving when it sits idle at a traffic light or stop sign during the first 30 minutes of use until some gas burns off. When this car was purchased used in Dec 2017 it happened immediately after the first full tank. When idling or right as you step on the gas the car starts “puttering” and stalls. A message states something like “put car in park and restart”. The only way to restart the car is to put it in park, turn it off completely, and restart it. The when you try to go again, it might stall or it might not. This can happen over and over again. When we determined what was the cause we got in the habit of not filling the tank completely, but sometimes you forget. Then as you start driving, it stalls…multiple times. This is an extremely dangerous situation to be in when the car stalls in the middle of an intersection and will likely end up causing a fatal accident. During a recent recall appointment at Jeep service department, the car stalled as I was pulling into the service department parking lot, so they first hand experienced the issue…in fact the service advisor had trouble starting the car. Jeep service called me later and told me there was an existing “Star Case” with Jeep corporate. Case number S1814000002. This symptom in the document are exactly what I am experiencing. The suggested repair to is replace the fuel pump, fuel
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the power train warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V529000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.
I was driving on the highway approximately 60mph, suddenly the service 4wd light appears. I took it to a Jeep dealership service center and diagnose and needed a 2 speed transfer case unit. It was replaced costing a little under $3000. The problem was not fixed and garage said it was misdiagnosed and still doesn’t know what’s wrong. Now the vehicle stalls while I’m driving and will not start immediately. I’m afraid this is going to cause an accident! Also it will have a sudden acceleration or a delayed acceleration while driving or when moving from a complete stop. This is very scary!
I experience a loss of power while driving and a message pops on the screen telling me to put the Jeep in Park then back into gear but I can only get it to go back into gear and drive after parking and restarting it. The park function seems to go out as well and I have to use the parking break to stop from rolling away uncontrollably and while I'm pushing the break to the floor there are awful griding noises coming from underneath the Jeep. I've experienced these issues with and without a check engine light and once before the low battery voltage light came on and a day later turned back off. The check engine light also came on and the jeep lost power while driving the day after an oil change but does it randomly other times too. No car shops can figure out what it wrong and the dealership I bought it from wants to charge me just to look at it. Please help I'm a single mom and need safe transportation!
After filling the vehicle up with fuel there is a good chance the you will experience shutter, stalling or even have engine failure. This has happen in the filling station parking lot and in main traffic. Luckily I live in a small city and have been able to move to safety when it has happened..
The vehicle shaking stop it by itself and acceleration stars slow takes longer for second gear then pushes back and forth as it’s getting fast or to a stop
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while at a stop light, the "Service Parking Brake", "Service Transmission" and "Shift to Park" appeared on the instrument panel. The contact also stated that the parking brake was not engaged however, the parking brake light illuminated indicating it was engaged. The contact stated that she shifted gears to drive and a message appeared on the instrument panel indicating to turn off and to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that when she restarted the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated along with other warning messages. The contact stated that she was able to drive the vehicle at 60 MPH. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic for a diagnostic test however, it was not diagnosed as the OBD reader was not reading any codes. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer for recall information. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they could not assist because her VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 104,135.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed however, the brake failed to engage. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the electronic parking brake needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the same dealer and the contact was informed that the parking brake module was corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 109,000.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
