Defect. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Tucson vehicles equipped with an optional Mobis tow hitch wiring harness. The wiring harness may have been installed incorrectly, allowing water into the control module. Moisture accumulation may cause the trailer lighting to fail or an electrical short circuit.
Risk. Nonfunctioning trailer lights can increase the risk of a crash. A short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will remove the trailer wiring harness and install a dust cap over the wiring receptacle, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 11, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 290. SAFETY DEFECT SUPPLEMENT TO NHTSA COMPLAINT #11685540 | VIN: [XXX] | MILEAGE: 27,370 This filing supplements Complaint #XXX regarding an uncorrected, compounded steering safety failure following the catastrophic detachment of the steering column while driving on XXX (Repair Order #XXX). COMPONENTS FAILED: Steering column assembly, footwell closeout shield, dashboard lower crash pad structural frame, and push-start switch. All components and vehicle are available for immediate inspection. SAFETY RISK: Following an invasive warranty teardown for an ignition switch failure under R/O #XXX at [XXX] Hyundai, the vehicle was released in an incomplete, hazardous condition. The factory lower footwell closeout shield was completely omitted, leaving the rotating intermediate steering shaft, universal joint, electric power steering motor, brake clevis linkage, and wiring harness fully exposed directly above driver foot controls. This creates a severe entrapment and mechanical binding hazard. An unauthorized exterior screw was drilled directly through the finished lower crash pad trim to pinch broken internal plastic tabs together, and hardware was left rattling inside the column housing. DEALER CONFIRMATION & RECORD FALSIFICATION: Management dismissed the exposed shaft. On R/O #XXX Line 3, the dealership falsified the narrative as "customer needs screws put in behind steering wheel" under an engine line to conceal shop rework. Authorized remedy has completely failed. INFORMATION REDA

2023 Hyundai Tucson Limited, 2.5L GDI, Alabama-built (VIN 5NMXXXXXXXXXXXXXX), built [XXX]. On [XXX], at about 37,550 miles, the check engine light came on flashing and the engine ran rough while I was traveling in Canada. My scan tool showed P0300, P0302 and P0304 (misfires on cylinders 2 and 4). On July 6, 2026, Experience Hyundai in Charlottetown, PE (service order 92XXX) replaced one ignition coil under warranty. No fuel injector leak test was performed. The misfires returned. On [XXX], at 39,409 miles, my scan showed P0302 active and P0304 pending. The car also had extended cranking after sitting and the check engine light was on. I was told I could keep driving the car unless it started to jerk or engine light started to flash, then immediately stop driving it and have it towed. On September 25, 2026, the car was towed to McGovern Hyundai Route 2, Leominster, MA (invoice 148XXX). The dealer found all 4 fuel injectors leaking and replaced them under warranty with injector service kit 35399-2S133QQH. My vehicle is outside the production range of Hyundai TSBs 23-FL-002H-1 and 26-FL-001H, which cover this injector failure only for Alabama-built Tucsons produced through July 11, 2022. Yet it failed in the same way. I am concerned the defect extends beyond the bulletin dates and that a sudden misfire could cause loss of power in traffic. There is no recall for this condition. The dealer found all 4 fuel injectors leaking, even though only cylinders 2 and 4 had set misfire code

The car was working perfectly fine I drive it for work all the time and one day it started shaking weirdly. A couple days later the check engine light turned on. It was throwing the code that was pointing to "misfiring in the 3rd cylinder" We changed all the spark plugs, 3rd cylinder coil pack, and switch the coil pack to see if it would say a misfiring in a different cylinder. We then took it to a mechanic saying that it is the high pressure fuel injectors and that he has seen this problem with other Hyundai Tucson around the same year as us and that there was a bulletin on it.

The right rear shock absorber failed and was replaced under warranty at approximately 22,000 miles. The car was making noise, the shock was leaking, and not working properly. The dealer admitted to problems with rear shock absorbers failing at low mileage on Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SUVs 2022 through 2025 Tucson Hybrids. The left and right rear shock absorbers are the same part number so we now expect the left side to fail but the dealer will not replace the left until it fails.
While backing out of driveway, with parked vehicle along side and one moving vehicle in the road, I was applying the break and the Emergency Stop feature activated. My speed was 2-3 MPH and slowing.
Emergency Brake applied while driving. Had been driving with vehicle in front, on each side and one at rear with issues and all of sudden the emergency brake was applied causing the vehicle in back to get very close to my car. This is has happened multiple times and reported to dealership multiple times. This was the second occurence on this day.

Under Hyundai Recall 290, the dealership permanently removed the functional trailer light wiring harness and replaced it with a nonfunctional rubber dust cap. A Hyundai case manager informed me that a replacement harness is "in development," but official NHTSA remedy filings show the cap is the final remedy, resulting in the permanent loss of a factory feature I paid for. The removal of towing functionality without a clear timeline for a safe replacement parts remedy constitutes a failure to properly correct the vehicle defect.

My client lost her right eye and suffered a brain injury when an aftermarket rhinestone emblem decal from her steering wheel shot into her face during a low-impact crash with a deer. The crash left minimal damage to the front end of the vehicle, but caused the airbags to deploy, shooting the decal into my client’s head. She purchased this dangerous decoration on Amazon, and despite NHTSA notices in 2023 and 2024 telling consumers to “avoid purchasing these steering wheel decals for all vehicle makes and models” and to “remove any such decals that they have already applied to their steering wheels,” this warning was not passed on to my client, even though records are kept of individual customer purchases, and these warnings could have been easily shared. A recent check of Amazon’s Safety Recalls and Alerts webpage did not turn up the 2024 NHTSA notice. I am sure there are other Amazon customers out there, who, like my client, have no idea just how dangerous these things are.

The vehicle developed an intermittent but potentially dangerous engine control malfunction. After the engine reached normal operating temperature, the engine speed (RPM) would repeatedly surge while the vehicle was stopped in Park and Neutral, fluctuating from approximately 1,000 RPM to over 3,000 RPM without any throttle input from the driver. The condition occurred with the air conditioning turned off and could be reproduced multiple times. At approximately the same time, the Auto Start/Stop system stopped functioning and displayed a warning indicator. A malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) also appeared during the incident. The warning light later turned off, but the engine surging continued. This unexpected increase in engine speed raises concerns about unintended vehicle movement or loss of driver control if the condition were to occur while shifting into gear or while driving. The unpredictable nature of the malfunction presents a potential safety risk to the occupants of the vehicle and to others on the road. The vehicle has been taken to an authorized Hyundai dealership for diagnosis and repair and remains under inspection. The problem is available for inspection. During my research, I found numerous reports from other Hyundai owners describing similar engine surging, idle fluctuation, and Auto Start/Stop malfunctions involving comparable vehicles. Because similar complaints appear to have been reported by multiple owners, I am submitting this report so the

While driving on a highway shortly after taking delivery of this vehicle as a Certified Pre-Owned purchase from an authorized Hyundai dealership, I experienced sudden and total brake failure. The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light illuminated and an audible warning chime sounded. The brake pedal did not respond normally. I was unable to slow the vehicle with the brakes and was forced to make an emergency maneuver to exit the highway and come to a safe stop. Upon inspecting the vehicle after stopping, I discovered that the rear left brake caliper had completely detached from its mounting bracket. The caliper was on the ground beneath the rear of the vehicle. Brake fluid had leaked onto the road surface. The vehicle had been in my possession for less than one full drive since purchase. As part of the CPO certification, the selling dealer performed a multi-point inspection and documented installation of new brake pads and certified the brake system as in good working order. The detachment of the caliper is consistent with mounting bolts that were either not reinstalled or not properly torqued following the dealer's brake service during CPO preparation. I have photographic evidence of the detached caliper and brake fluid loss. INJURIES: None, but significant risk to myself and other highway drivers. FIRES: No. MEDICAL ATTENTION: Not required. I received a letter in March that there is a problem with The Tow Hitch Harness Accessory which could lead to a fire etc. They said they will come out with a repair. I got a second letter saying they have a solution for repair in May I contacted Classic Hyundai twice to make sure the repair now will allow the lights and brakes on the trailer work. Julie and Jesica there said all would be fixed and the lights and break lights will work. I brought the car there June 5th 2026 and asked again if all would work. Lyna there said no. I left. I called U-hall Streetsboro Ohio and talked to Bill who handles the hitch repairs and they said they could fix totally and have for some dealerships. I called Hyundai customer service Kyre and asked if Hyundai in Streetsboro Ohio can be set up to have it repaired. He said no. He would not document his response to me. Horn on vehicle consistently goes out. Either goes out entirely or the volume of the horn is below a safe level. This is a known Hyundai issue and Hyundai refuses to acknowledge it on this specific model, but has acknowledged it on different models. I Have had multiple repairs by Hyundai directly, and the horn consistently keeps going out. There are sometimes in dangerous situations where I need to utilize the horn to avoid an accident and warn other drivers of danger, and I am unable to do so, and it causes dangerous driving situations. This is a known defect on multiple Hyundai vehicles in this year, but the Tucson is one of the few vehicles they will not call a voluntary recall on and NHTSA needs to be notified about this and act accordingly as a regulatory body to protect consumers and people on the road.

I received a Recall notice around January 2026 for the trailer hitch wiring harness on my 2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. For 6 months the local dealer told me there was no fix available from Hyundai. I finally received a notice informing me that parts were now available and to bring it in to dealer for repairs. I took the vehicle in for recall repairs on May 27, 2026. Instead of repairing/replacing the wiring harness, Hyundai removed the entire wiring harness making the trailer hitch which I use for my business inoperable legally. When I noticed the wiring harness missing several days later, the dealer said that was Hyundai's "fix" for the recall issue. I contacted Hyundai USA Customer Service who also told me that removing the wiring harness and replacing it with an inexpensive dust cover was the fix. They told me that sometime in the future there will be another recall to have the wiring harness replaced. In the meantime, they have taken my vehicle VIN off the open recall list, since it has been "fixed". Hyundai sold me a vehicle with a trailer hitch and now they have without my permission or prior knowledge disabled it.

I am writing regarding a serious vehicle safety issue involving my 2023 Hyundai Tucson Limited purchased from on [XXX] with approximately 61,000 miles. About one month after purchase, during a drive from Pennsylvania to Florida in October 2025, the vehicle experienced multiple dangerous steering and collision-assist malfunctions in clear highway conditions. The first incident occurred in Virginia while adaptive cruise control and steering assist were active at approximately 70 mph. Within seconds, the steering wheel aggressively turned left and right, causing the vehicle to tip and nearly roll until the driver manually regained control. Later during the same trip, while making a normal lane change with the right turn signal activated, the vehicle falsely detected a collision despite no vehicle being present. The vehicle then veered left toward traffic and unexpectedly slammed on the brakes. Following these incidents, all assist sensors and automated driving features were manually disabled for safety reasons. However, the vehicle has continued intermittently triggering false collision warnings and emergency braking events with no vehicles present, creating additional near-accident situations involving surrounding traffic. I recently had the vehicle inspected by Hyundai after initially believing this may only be a calibration issue. Due to financial and scheduling limitations, I delayed service until this month, but I now understand this issue is far more serious and systemic.

The reverse beeping is just too loud for an Hybrid and many people online agree. I fully agree with having mandates for electric vehicles for safety concerns however they should not be so loud that they are louder or near as loud as a commercial truck and disturb residents. In fact Hyundai responded to the complaints by re-designing it for 2025 and newer facelifts but won't give any services to upgrade it to newer versions. I fully believe that Hyundai should and must offer services to use the new updated VESS.

While driving on April 11, 2026 at approximately 1:30 PM on [XXX] , the vehicle experienced a loss of steering response while the roadway curved to the right. However, the vehicle did not respond to the steering input and instead continued traveling straight. As a result, the vehicle struck the curb on the driver’s side. The impact with the curb slightly redirected the vehicle, but steering response was not restored. The driver continued attempting to steer the vehicle, and although the steering wheel continued to turn normally, the vehicle did not change direction. Dear Commissioner and DMV Officials: I am writing to formally address a serious financial and safety concern affecting vehicle owners in Connecticut. As a driver with over 50 years of experience—32 of those in CT—I have never experienced rodent damage to any vehicle until purchasing my 2023 Hyundai Tucson. Since acquiring this vehicle, I have suffered thousands of dollars in damage from rodents chewing through the wiring and wire housing. Multiple mechanics have confirmed this is due to manufacturers switching to soy-based and plant-derived biodegradable materials in wiring insulation. These materials are effectively edible, attracting rodents year-round—not just in cold months. This is not owner negligence. The root cause is a material deficiency in the vehicle's manufacturing. Consumers should not bear the financial burden of a known design choice made by the automaker. Repairs are costly, often excluded from warranties, and frequently not covered by insurance. I respectfully request the Department: Investigate the scope of rodent damage complaints linked to bio-based wiring in newer vehicles. Coordinate with NHTSA to evaluate whether this constitutes a safety defect warranting a recall. Advocate for regulatory standards requiring rodent-resistant wiring materials. Urge manufacturers like Hyundai to offer warranty coverage, reimbursement, or retrofits for affected vehicles. I am prepared to provide documentation of my repair expenses upon request. Thank you for your attenti

At dusk I was driving below the speed limit (40 MPH). I was at least 3 car lengths behind the vehicle in front of me when i saw the driver was braking because his brake lights came on and there was an intersection ahead with a stop light. There were at least two cars ahead of the vehicler I was behind. I braked but the car kept on going and appeared to accelerate. I was unable to stop the car with the brakes and collided with the car ahead. It was a sturdy vehicle with a strong bumper so I did not do much damage, if any, to the vehicle but my car requires $6,645.90 of repairs. No one was hurt and the air bags did not deploy. I was wearing my seat belt. There was no warning from ny vehicle that I was getting too close to the vehicle ahead and my car made no attempt to brake automatically. It was as though all warning indicators were not functioning. I have had two other incidents of the car surging ahead but did not report it because no one else was involved and I was able to correct the speed and I thought it was just my imagination.

1. Component and Availability: The panoramic sunroof shattered spontaneously. The failed component was replaced by Myrtle Beach Hyundai, but I have documented the damage with photos, and the vehicle is available for inspection to show the remaining glass debris inside the structure and the damaged headliner. 2. Safety Risk: The sunroof shattered with a loud, gunshot-like noise while driving at 60 mph on a highway (I-95), causing extreme driver distraction and potential loss of vehicle control. Furthermore, a large amount of glass shards fell into the cabin and remains trapped inside the headliner. These hidden fragments continue to rattle, causing ongoing distraction and posing a risk of injury to occupants if they fall through the damaged interior fabric. 3. Confirmation by Dealer: Yes, the problem was confirmed by Myrtle Beach Hyundai. They replaced the sunroof under a "goodwill" gesture, although they initially claimed it was not a warranty issue. 4. Inspection by Others: The vehicle was inspected and repaired by the authorized Hyundai dealer (Myrtle Beach Hyundai). No police or insurance reports were filed as it was a spontaneous failure without a collision. 5. Warning Symptoms: There were no warning lamps, unusual noises, or any symptoms prior to the failure. The shattering occurred suddenly and without any external impact or provocation on January 12th.

As I was pulling into a parking space in a parking garage, the vehicle's engine revved, tires squealed and then the vehicle propelled forward on its own, without my foot being on the accelerator. The vehicle only stopped when it hit a support column and the wall of the parking structure. There was extensive damage to my vehicle and to the parking structure wall. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk due to the car accelerating on its own. I was backing out of my driveway, which is on a busy street. I waited for the traffic to clear. I backed out onto the main road, which I thought was completely clear, but a car came behind me and I smacked right into him. There was no beeping from my car, and the automatic braking system did not engage at all. The rear of my car, particularly the driver's side, was severely damaged. The other car's passenger front door was badly damaged. The side curtain airbag on their car deployed and their vehicle (Volvo station wagon) was not driveable. The emergency braking system frequently engages unexpectedly when I back out of my driveway, even when there is no hazard. The unexpected braking is oftentimes dangerous. However, this time, when I needed it, it did not engage. An outside diagnostic inspection was done on the vehicle, and showed "no event." If you saw the cars involved in the accident, it is clear there was a significant "event."

My 2023 Hyundai Tucson’s windshield has developed excessive pitting, multiple chips, and cracks despite only normal highway driving. I do not drive on gravel or dirt roads, yet the glass shows abnormal wear far beyond what would be expected for a vehicle this new. One of the larger chips was repaired by Safelite, and during the repair the windshield cracked further, suggesting the glass is unusually weak or defective. Visibility has become noticeably compromised due to the fine pitting across the entire windshield. Based on the number of similar complaints from other Tucson owners, this appears to be a recurring safety issue with Hyundai windshields.

As I was parking my car in a parking spot going about 5 miles or less. My car surged forward at a very accelerated speed, and I ended up running into a brushed and a metal fence, which is what stopped me. There were no warnings that went off on my car. No emergency brakes, nothing.

2023 Hyundai Tuscon - Very Low Milage approx 6500 Miles - while in a parking lot, The rear passenger Carrier ARM which holds the Control arm fully cracked causing the Control arm to fall off. This product failure is unprecedented as it was a total part manufacture failure. NO impact or under carriage damage was found, even upon Dealer inspection. I as the driver of the vehicle confirm that No impact, accident occurred, and luckily I was not on a highway when it occurred. This was caused ONLY as a result of Product Failure. My concern is that this may occur on the other wheel(s) as a product failure is often NOT a one- product issue, but usually a batch failure. So I am concerned for my safety and the safety of others on the road with this vehicle and product part. Another concern - this vehicle was manufactured during the covid era, and I am concerned about product failures as parts were difficult to get and may have been sourced without proper testing during this time). Kindly advise me on your findings, and if there is an inspection that can be performed to assure me that the car is safe.

After using horn on rainy highway driving it stopped working completely. Called dealer with issue and scheduled appointment. After two day they said it is a know issue and horns will take 2-3 business days to order. Took 5. Getting horns replaced today but told by service tech that this is a known safety issue to Hyundai. Horns are a basic piece of equipment. Should be recalled and better designed.

My 2023 Hyundai Tuscon has 36000 miles. Started running rough with a slight noise. First noticed on Wed [XXX]. On Thursday [XXX] I went to start my car and it stalled. Finally after letting it sit a few minutes it started but only to have the SGI light flash yellow and stay yellow for the remainder of the drive. That day I made an appt at my local Hyundai Dealership in Brandon Florida. They kept my car. Fast forward, Monday September 15th I was notified that the car had lost a significant amount of oil. Car was inspected and free of any leaks. Tech stated because of the low oil & oil pressure the battery life was significantly impacted. I would need an oil change & new battery. Upon arriving back I came across an article stating that excessive oil consumption is common among these vehicles and the dealer wasn't even going to notify me of this issue. They were not honest and I want to file a formal complaint knowing that this is well known issue. I feel unsafe driving my children around and am upset that a recall has not been issued to fix this. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Complaints 1-50 of 136, newest first, reproduced as filed.
No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.
Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
