An improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.

Risk. An electrical short increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy. Dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary, and install a protective shield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Risk. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, increasing the risk of injury or death.

Remedy. The driver's front air bag will be replaced, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 6, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2013 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, 550i xDrive, and ActiveHybrid 5 vehicles. The rear reflex reflectors may not reflect enough light. As such, the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk. The vehicle may be less visible to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.

During the intervening ten months, I experienced hardship, expense and loss of use of my vehicle. The attached documents represent my correspondence to BMW Customer relations. I hereby submit my belief that BMW has some responsibility for failure to cure the smoke condition they knew about for ten months. BMW dealerships confirm there are no solutions, creating a long-term safety hazard for owners who rely on navigation systems. 2.Recall Incomplete: I have an open recall on this vehicle, but BMW dealerships have only responded with vague statements such as, “it should be coming soon.” There has been no formal notification, letter, or resolution from BMW. This lack of transparency and urgency in addressing safety recalls is unacceptable. 3.Unethical Service Tactics: BMW dealerships are often more focused on convincing customers to upgrade their vehicle than resolving legitimate service issues. Staff push expensive services and frame them as “complaints” on invoices—using high-pressure tactics to imply serious mechanical threats unless those services are purchased. This raises concerns about ethics and misrepresentation. This experience is based on NY but all BMW dealership operate same way overpricing and if you tell them a BMW dealership gives you less than what is on their quote, they want them to show it to you , reflecting their unethical manner to overprice everything when it comes to service o

While on [XXX] the car suddenly shows low engine oil. The car was driving from Fremont, CA to Los Angeles on Friday [XXX]. Then, coming back to Fremont, CA from LA on Sat. [XXX] It happened after [XXX] to [XXX] , warning light showed low engine oil. Stopped the car at safe place. Then, contacted the insurance to tow the car as well as my son to bring engine oil. After filled engine oil, then, warning light showed low coolant. Filled 3 gallons of water, but sooner later need to fill coolant again due to disappear. The car has been serviced by BMW Fremont, CA on Nov 30, 2024 with 87751 odometer. At the time of engine break down, odometer is about ~91,500 miles. Less than 4,000 miles driving, engine oil is gone somewhere. Based on initial assessment by mechanic, it needs to replace the engine. The car will be towed on June 19, 25 to the shop to repair. Dear BMW Customer Service, I am writing to report a serious issue with my 2014 BMW xDrive 528i regarding the malfunction of the door locking system. I parked my car in the garage and 15 minutes later my garage is up in flames.The fire department did an investigation then came to the conclusion that the fire started from my cars front passenger side headlamp area. Doing a little research I find out that I’m not the only one that has had that same expierence.

I purchased the used BMW from a very reputable dealership May 2021. Last week, I was driving the car and all of the dashboard lights went on suddenly. The car began to buck and I pulled over immediately. I had the car towed to the local BMW dealership. The service department informed me, the serpentine belt broke, wrapped around the crankshaft, and grinded into pieces. The pieced of the belt were sucked into the engine and caused the engine to seize. When researching this problem, because I never heard of it before, it seems it is a fairly common problem with BMW’s. The BMW dealership wanted $14,000 to insert a new engine. There is no way I can afford that, and if it is a known problem, why wasn’t there a recall? I contacted BMW customer service and they said there was nothing they can do to help me. I am stuck with a auto loan for $19,000 with monthly payments, and a car that doesn’t move. When I purchased the car last year, an extended warranty was around 8k because the car was older. While driving on highway at 65 mph the vehicle electrical system began to go haywire and the power steering and brakes both stopped functioning making it impossible to control vehicle. I was nearly struck by several vehicles because of the suddenness of the shutdown. I was able to subsequently stop vehicle in the left lane without incident. 2014 BMW 528i N20 engine failure at 70K miles. My wife was driving on a divided highway and had just tried to accelerate to change lanes. Without warning or any warning lights, the engine died and she was able to coast nearly off road. The car was locked into park and would not restart. This could have resulted in a serious accident as she was just off I-40 in Raleigh in very heavy traffic. Vehicle was towed to a BMW dealer where it was diagnosed as an internal engine failure and engine needed to be replaced. The car was previously serviced approximately 1600 miles prior. Upon searching, this is a known problem with numerous sudden failures. BMW settled a class action but our BMW isn't covered. There are several years of this engine still in service and likely pose a significant risk to occupants and other cars.

The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, an 18-wheel semi-truck approached the vehicle closely and the contact attempted to honk the horn however, the horn failed to function. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to veer to the side of the roadway. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer, where it was diagnosed that the driver's side air bag clockspring was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ARE MELTING FROM SUN EXPOSURE. WHEN GRABBING BOTH THE DRIVER DOOR AND PASSENGER FRONT DOOR FROM THE INTERIOR, THE HANDLE IS MELTED, LEAVING A CRUMBLY AND GOOEY TAR ON YOUR HANDS. I'VE READ ONLINE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY BMW OWNERS.

ON MY MORNING COMMUTE ON THE HIGHWAY (APPROX 70-75 MPH) I HEARD A LOUD BANG RIGHT ON TOP OF THE CAR, AS IF A CINDER BLOCK HAD BEEN DROPPED STRAIGHT FROM ABOVE. SHORTLY AFTER I HEARD GLASS SHARDS CRUMBLING AND THEN VISIBLY SAW THE SAME IMMEDIATELY AFTER. ONCE I PARKED, THE SUNROOF HAD COMPLETELY SHATTERED. NO EVIDENCE OF FALLEN DEBRIS OR EXTERNAL OBJECT WAS OBSERVED.

AFTER PARKING THE CAR FOR EXTENDED TIME (>7HOURS), HOT WEATHER, STARTING THE CAR AND PUT IN REVERSE, BACK OUT SLOWLY THE ENGINE STALLS, TRANSMISSION FLIPS BY ITSELF TO NEUTRAL (N) AND A MESSAGE ON SCREEN STATING THAT TRANSMISSION IS NOT IN PARK, ...., THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS. HAPPENING EARLIER BUT WAS ONLY SHAKING WHEN REVERSING AND ENGINE STAYS ON. NOW GOT WORSE AND ENGINE STALLS. TOOK TO BMW DEALERS (TWO OF THEM) BOTH CLAIMED THEY COULDN'T RECREATE THE ISSUE BUT SAW IT BEFORE AND NO SOLUTION FROM BMW BUT TO WAIT 15 SECONDS AFTER STARTING THE CAR TO PUT IN REVERSE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 BMW 528I. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE AND THE DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE DRIVER NOTICED OIL FLOWING OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO OTTO'S BMW (610)-399-6800, LOCATED AT 1275 WILMINGTON PIKE, WESTCHESTER, PA) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT DRIVESHAFT DETACHED AND DAMAGED THE OIL PAN, PUMP, AND TRANSMISSION PAN. THE TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDED THAT THE ENGINE, FRONT DRIVESHAFT, AND TRANSMISSION PAN BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 75,000.

TWO OF FOUR WHEELS ON THIS VEHICLE WERE FOUND TO BE CRACKED ON THE INBOARD FLANGE/BEAD SEAT AREA. THESE CRACKS WERE FOUND DURING A ROUTINE SERVICE FOR TIRE ROTATION. THERE WAS NO DEGRADATION IN THE VEHICLE'S HANDLING OR PERFORMANCE. I BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW IN JAN 2014, HAS 110K MILES AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. TIRES HAVE NEVER BEEN DAMAGED IN ANYWAY - WEAR OUT REPLACEMENTS ONLY.
