2008 BMW 528i

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2011 128i and 2007-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.

Risk. An electrical short can cause the parts within the PCV valve to melt, increasing the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is not in use.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PCV valve heater, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. Owners will receive a second notification by the end of October 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect. BMW is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2010 528i, 535i, 550i, and M5 passenger cars manufactured from March 1, 2007, through December 31, 2009. Over time, increased resistance at the taillight electrical contact points may cause damage to the ground terminal and housing of the connector resulting in an intermittent or permanent loss of functionality of one or more rear lamp functions (tail, brake, turn-signal, reverse).

Risk. Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear lamp bulb carriers free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].

The daylight lamps fall apart causing poor lighting at night and continuous alarms while driving. Also, impacting the quality of light and lack of lighting at night. The alarms are continuous and block ALL other alerts from the vehicle, including cruise control, temperature, overheating, engine, and other notices.

After purchasing this vehicle from my aunt and uncle my one headlight when bad after purchasing the headlights I replaced both the right and left one while removing the old headlights the insulation from the wires just crumbles off casuing a short bc the wires are zip tied several times together and causes my lights to flicker or not work at all while the the car keeps notifying me that there is an issue never couple seconds

I bought a 2008 528i July 2024. Got Emissions & Tag at the end of August. Oct 5 2024. My car was on Fire. Drove the car 11 mins got out for a few mins got bk in crunk the car and a flame shot out of what I'm assuming is a fuse box on the driver side. The car had flames coming from under the steering wheel area in the dash. When we crunk the car we could smell wire burning at first. Then flames..The vehicle has an active recall that clearly says A Pcv heater valve will cause the vehicle to over heat and short circuit causing a fire. Wiring harness needs to be replaced by adding a fuse to keep this from happening. The car was having issues passing the emissions. It was throwing a code something to do with the crankcase positioner something to do with Emissions. The car started running rough and idling rough before the fire happened.I sent bmw pics and the fire report. The fire report states it was an electrical fire. I never looked under my hood bc I was afraid I'd get burned. Not sure if anything else was damaged under the hood.Bc my vehicle is 16years old Bmw will not even send an inspector out to the garage where the vehicle sits just a month after getting it on the road..They first said it had aftermarket lights on the right side of the car by looking at pics I sent. That is false it's not even a light bmw placed a reflector sticker cc when they made the vehicle it peeled off after the first wash. This same technician that doesn't know a light from a reflector then claimed

My BMW i528 was parked on May 23, 2024, and the driver airbag deflated without being tampered with. The incident is on surveillance camera. Since the car was manufactured in 2008, the insurance company will not cover the cost of the incident because it was not the result of a collision. There was no light that came on prior to the incident. A diagnostic check was performed and there was no indication of a problem with the airbag.

My front left and right headlight assembly went out. Went to take a look to realize all the wiring inside the assembly was exposed and sparking. Come to find out this was a common issue in this year make and model. They are charging $2,500 per assembly for a factory issue that could start a fire. Needs taken care of ASAP

For a while now, I had been smelling gas around the car. I had it smogged and it passed but the technician told me that it smelled as if it were running rich because he smelled gas. It did not make sense to me that it could be running rich because it would not have passed smog then. I went to the supermarket recently and as I came out, I saw a small puddle of liquid under the left rear seating area. I touched it and smelled it and it was gas. My car leaves a little puddle of gas wherever I park now. I just saw a video on YouTube called "My BMW 535i has a fuel leak." That has been the problem a lot of people are having with their biodegradable BMW plastics. In the video, the young man describes that the fuel filter starts leaking and he has to spend $190.00 in parts. I don't have that money to be throwing away right now. Please look into and help us out.

Been smelling burning plastic/or oil thru air vents. as if the pvc valve was melting per recall description on probles, it fits the description, the only thing that happened to the car recently is one of the windows regulator anti trap functions it says antitrap function window disabled, then slowly started noticing burning smell for the first 10 minutes of everyday drive, my safety and many others could be very compromised , as I live on a mobile home community, and these properties have a high risk of fire hazard, and the fumes I am smelling, also I dont wanna get caught in a vehicle fire anywhere, much less on traffic, freeway or cause an accidents because of disabled vehicle, - the list goes on . thanks For allowing me to make a complaint and bring awareness for many other owners

The car started to leak gas from the tank.

FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES ON AND IT PULLS TO THE PASSENGER SIDE WHERE IT FEELS LIKE THE WHEEL IS GOING TO COME OFF AND THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT IS LOCKED WHERE IT WON'T EXTENDED OUT TO BUCKLE AND THE CAR DOG WALKS BACK AND FORTH WHILE DRIVING

DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT, SO I AUTOMATICALLY ASSUMED THAT THE BULL WAS BLOWN. WENT AND BOUGHT $100 BULL THAT CONTROLS THE HIGH BEAM AND THE LOW BEAMS, REPLACE THE BULB, AND THE HEADLIGHT STILL DOESN'T WORK. TOOK THE BALL BACK AND GOT ANOTHER BULB, AND THE HEADLIGHT STILL DOESN'T WORK. AS I WAS REPLACING THE BULB I NOTICED BARE WIRES SHOWING, ON MULTIPLE WIRES, AS FAR AS I COULD SEE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE , AS IT COULD CAUSE MY CAR TO CATCH FIRE.

WHEN DRIVING LAST WEEK, WE HEARD HEAVY CLUNKING SOUNDS. WE TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC TO INVESTIGATE THE NOISE, AND HE IDENTIFIED THE THE FRAME SWAY BAR MOUNT HAD SHEERED OFF WHERE THE SWAY BAR TO FRAME MOUNT IS. THE MECHANIC ASKED IF THE CAR HAD BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. WE BOUGHT IT USED IN 2012, AND THERE WAS NO REPORT OF AN ACCIDENT. SINCE WE HAVE HAD IT, WE HAVEN'T HAD AN ACCIDENT EITHER.

VEHICLE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT (SRS) FAILURE. 2ND TIME THIS SAFETY RELATED SENSOR HAS FAILED. FIRST TIME DEALERSHIP REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE FOR REPLACEMENT NOW. THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED ITEM AND IT HAS FAILED FOR THE SECOND TIME. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT SAME ITEM HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR PRIOR MODELS AND YEARS. FAULT IN PASSENGER-RESTRAINT SYSTEM AFFECTING AIRBAG, BELT TENSIONER OR BELT-FORCE LIMITER. THIS STARTED HAPPENING A YEAR AGO AFTER VISITING DEALERSHIP FOR OIL CHANGE. I CANNOT HAVE PASSENGER NEXT TO ME BECAUSE WE ARE AFRAID OF MALFUNCTION IN AIRBAG SYSTEM.

I WAS DRIVING IN THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY BMW STARTED SHAKING AND WHEN I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE AND OPENED MY HOOD THE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE.

SEAT AIRBAG SENSOR MALFUNCTIONING

I NOTICE MY CAR TAKING LONGER TO START WITH THE PUSH BOTTOM THEN I NOTICE A STRONG SMELL OF GAS WHILE THE AC STARTED SO I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AND THE SMELL GOT STRONGER. SO NOW I WANT TO NOW WHY IT'S HAPPENING. THANKBUOU

WHEN AT A STOPLIGHT OR STOP SIGN, THE CAR WILL SHUT OFF AND THE TRANSMISSION GOES INTO NEUTRAL.

ALL OF THE INTERNAL HEADLIGHT WIRING INSULATION ON BOTH HEADLIGHTS IS CRUMBLING OFF WHICH IS EXPOSING THE COPPER WIRE, CAUSING SPARKS AND SHORTING OUT. I HAVE PERFORMED MUCH ONLINE RESEARCH AND APPARENTLY THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY BMW. CURRENTLY IT'S A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT'S UNPREDICTABLE WHEN HEADLIGHTS WILL SHORT OUT WHILE DRIVING, LOSING SIGHT OF THE ROAD AND POSSIBLY INCREASING RISK OF ACCIDENT.

AIR BAG SENSOR FOR FRONT PASSENGER SEAT NOT WORKING. REPLACED ONCE WHILE VEHICLE UNDER WARRANTY. SAME SENSOR MALFUNCTION AGAIN. BMW WILL NOT REPLACE UNLESS I PAY, COST OF REPLACING SENSOR OVER 4,000.00. I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE COVERED BY BMW SINCE SAME PART IS AGAIN NOT WORKING.

WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO INSTALL NEW LOW BEAM, HIGH BEAM, AND ANGEL EYE BULBS I DISCOVERED THAT ALL THE PROTECTIVE COATING ON THE WIRES INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY WAS MISSING OR CRUMBLING OFF. THESE EXPOSED WIRES ARE A CERTAIN FIRE HAZARD. ANY ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE WIRE COATING RESULTED IN MORE COATING CRUMBLING OFF, EXPOSING YET MORE OF THE WIRE.

IN MY 2008 528I I WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME AS MANY OTHERS WHERE IF YOU ARE AT A COMPLETE STOP AND YOU GO TO ACCELERATE THE CAR DOESN'T RESPOND RIGHT AWAY AND YOU NATURALLY APPLY MORE GAS AND THEN THE CAR JUMPS AHEAD OF YOU. IF YOU WERE TO MOVE TO THE D/S POSITION, THE CAR WAS PERFECT AND YOU DIDN'T EXPERIENCE ANY LAG IN ACCELERATION, SEEMS PEDAL HAS TO BE PRESSED MORE THAN IT SHOULD BEFORE GETTING AN IMMEDIATE THROTTLE RESPONSE. LIKE A SMALL DEAD SPOT, I SUPPOSE. ONLY IN NORMAL MODE. NO LAG IN SPORT MODE. RESPONSE IS IMMEDIATE. IT HAS SCARED ME A FEW TIMES WHEN PULLING OUT FROM A STOP SIGN INTO TRAFFIC, THINKING YOU HAVE PLENTY OF TIME AND EASE ONTO THE ACCELERATOR ONLY TO FIND YOURSELF MOVING LIKE A SNAIL, THEN HAVING TO STOMP ON IT TO GET MOVING AS TRAFFIC NEARS.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS WAITING FOR A RESPONSE TO DETERMINE WHEN THE DEALER WOULD RECEIVE THE PART. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.

CAR STARTED SMOKING. REPAIR SHOP SAID IT'S A PROBLEM WITH PCV VALVE AND IF OVER HEATED CAN CAUSE FIRE.

MY CAR HAD AN FUEL LEAK WHICH HAD TO BE REPAIRED ASAP

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOWSON BMW (700 KENILWORTH DR., TOWSON, MD) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OIL HOUSING FILTER MELTED AND THE SPARK PLUGS EMITTED TOO MUCH VOLTAGE IN THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V683000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); HOWEVER, THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000. A WARNING INDICATOR FOR THE REAR DRIVER SIDE EXTERIOR LIGHTING ILLUMINATED. IN ADDITION, THE TURN SIGNAL INDICATOR FLICKERED RAPIDLY ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, BUT FAILED TO ILLUMINATE ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V407000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000.

FUEL SENDING UNIT CRACKED LEAKING FUEL AND SMELL. REPLACED AT BMW DEALERSHIP.

ON 01/26/2018 I WENT TO EAST BAY BMW BECAUSE OF THE PCV VALVE HEATER RECALL CAMPAIGN B 11 16 17 I WAS GIVEN A LONG TERM RENTAL FROM ENTERPRISE CAR RENTAL BUT HAD TO STORE MY VEHICLE AT MY HOME WHILE WAITING FOR THE PARTS FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. AFTER 4 MONTHS I WAS NOTIFIED TO RETURN FOR THE REPAIR ON 04/30/2018 EAST BAY RETURNED THE CAR. WITH-IN 2 DAY'S I WAS HAVING THE O2 SENSOR REPLACED FROM A CERTIFIED BMW MECHANIC AND AFTER EXAMINATION HE INFORMED ME THE RECALL CAMPAIGN WAS NOT PERFORMED ACCORDING BULLETIN. ORIGINAL PARTS FROM THE ALTERNATOR WERE STILL ON MY CAR AND HAD NEVER BEEN REMOVED. REMOVING THE ALTERNATOR AND REPLACING THE BOLTS, CHECKING/REPLACING PARTS FOR DAMAGE WAS NEVER PERFORMED. I RETURNED TO EAST BAY THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY TO CONFRONT THE MANAGER WORKING HIS NAME IS [XXX], HE ADMITTED TO HAVE A MECHANIC WHO COULD REACH TO REPLACE THE VALVE HEATER WITHOUT REMOVAL OF THE OTHER PARTS SPECIFIED IN THE CAMPAIGN. THE INTAKE IS AN ALTERNATE ROUTE FOR THE REPAIR BUT WOULD COMPROMISE MY ENGINE. I PLACED A CALL TO BMW USA AND TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED AND PARTS/PAPERWORK RETURNED BY EAST BAY FOR THE RECALL WERE STILL ON MY CAR AND A EMISSION PROOF OF CORRECTION WAS NEVER RECEIVED. I WOULD RETURN TO EAST BAY AND SPEAK WITH THE STORE SERVICE MANAGER [XXX]. I INFORMED HIM WHAT HAPPENED AND REQUEST TO HAVE THE RECALL RE-DONE AT A DEALER OF MY CHOICE, HAVE A SMOG TEST, RECEIVE PROOF OF CORRECTION AT HIS COST. I ALSO HAD HIM WARRANT MY ENGINE FOR 2 ADDITIONAL YRS FOR COMPRO

HEADLIGHT WIRING INSIDE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY IS DETERIORATING BADLY. THE PROTECTIVE COATING IS CRACKING AND FLAKING OFF LEAVING THE EXPOSED COPPER CORE WHICH IN TURN SHORTS OUT THE LIGHTS. POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARD AS WELL.

THE CONTACT CALLED BMW OF VALENCIA AT (661) 200-9111 (LOCATED AT 23435 VALENCIA BLVD, VALENCIA, CA 91355) AND WAS INFORMED THAT PARTS WERE AVAILABLE AND TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE BMW OF VALENCIA DEALER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 138,000.
