Defect. BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, 528i, 528i xDrive, 328i, 328xi, 2016-2018 X5 xdrive 40e, 2014-2016 228i, 228xi, 428i, 428i xDrive, 328xi Gran Turismo, 2013-2017 X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, 2015-2018 X4 xDrive28i, 2015-2016 428xi vehicles. An improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.

Risk. An electrical short increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy. Dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary, and install a protective shield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

I almost backed over a child due my tire pressure warning system. It preempts my back up video. The child was too short to see out of the rear window. In the 10 years that I have owned this car the TPMS has been nothing but a distraction and and a nuisance. It has never done any good. It tells me to pull over and stop in dangerous situations. Now it has created a very real danger. I should add that the dealership has told me that one of my sensors must be out so that I presently cannot turn the warning off. They will not be able to repair it for 3 weeks. The TPMS is a terrible requirement.

When the fuel gauge reads 1/4 of a tank or less the car stalls sporadically and comes to a jerking stop. This causes the cars behind us to either slam on their brakes or swerve to avoid hitting us. We reported this to our local BMW dealer and were told this is a known issue on many models, including ours. However, our car was not included in the existing recalls, so we could either pay for a diagnostic test and the fix OR keep the tank filled. Car started to have low coolant when i would replace it instantly and i took it to a shop and they told me it has a recall.

I have been waiting since October 2024 to get a remedy available to fix the recall on this vehicle. Dealership won’t even look at the car since the remedy is unavailable but this is a dangerous issue to have and know about without a fix anywhere in the foreseeable future.

A recall was issued by BMW in August 2024. As of today, April 14, 2025, there is still no remedy issued by BMW to repair this issue. BMW states that the issue with the Water Pump Electrical Connector can cause a short circuit and engine fire.

Brake line bracket failed. It appears that the bracket is made out of plastic and is a common failure for BMWs. The failure causes the line to rattle against the lower body and eventually break. The bracket is in a place very difficult to access. BMW wants to charge 1000$ while the part cost in under 10$

Car stops while driving, battery also draws while not in use. which is very dangerous. Already filed report with dealer ship for car. We will be having an another baby this winter and it is getting to the point where It can be very dangerous for my family. We got it checked but since it’s a manufacturer issue is what they said. Since this car doesn’t have any recalls dealer doesn’t want to do anything. We noticed that many other cars of same year have the same problem.

In July 2023, my 2016 BMW 328i sedan with N26 engine began emitting a large plume of smoke for 15-30 seconds from the exhaust after a cold startup. I identified the following recalls which described the same situation as mine (SI B11 11 16 and SI B11 17 16) but was informed by the local BMW dealership my VIN was ineligible for both. In early October 2023, I brought my car to a local repair shop, where the mechanic confirmed the issue to be the oil feed line and replaced it with part # 11-42-8-678-840, removing original part # 11-42-8-626-652. The aforementioned recalls specify the smoke from the exhaust is caused by faulty oil feed lines or carbonization of the turbocharger sealing ring, both of which may be resolved by installing part # 11-42-8-678-840 that includes a check valve to prevent this issue moving forward. While my car was experiencing the same problem and required the same part # to resolve, it was classified as ineligible due to the very limited scope of the recalls, namely the production and model years of eligible cars (2011-2013). While my car was manufactured in January of 2016, it still received an inadequate oil feed line that did not contain the check valve. This is problematic as no recall was issued for my car thereafter once BMW identified this issue as early as October of 2016. I have since spoken with the parts manager at my local dealership as well as a case manager with BMW of North America and was informed no further assistance could be provided.

The clip holding the emergency brake line is made out of plastic and mine broke (which I found out is common with these cars). When this happens, it rubs on the driveshaft which can wear through and sever the emergency brake line. This is a very dangerous situation and easily be avoided if BMW used a metal part vs. the current, plastic flimsy one.

Drive train malfunction. Throws itself in to neutral while driving. Lost the power to accelerate so had to coast to the shoulder.. Turned the car off and restarted it. Took to automotive shop via extended warranty suggested and I paid to have the pressure fuel piece. This same piece, apparently has a recall on the 2015 but not my year. Very upset. While out of town the same thing happened again. With a passenger. Very scary my car lost power and almost caused an accident.

Known what failed the entire car was on fire= if there was no one near by it could have consumed more cars/buildings it has been inspected by BMW of north america and Geico the car was overheating the night before and had a check engine light. it was taken to the shop immediately and the fire started within less than 24 hours of the initial symptoms occurring.

Need to recall as it is Common Knowledge among the BMW technicians that these vehicles are plagued with hazard of Parking / Emergency Break line clip breaking and for the line contacting the rotating drive shaft. The holding clip Mfg Part # 34406854898 breaks regularly ! the plastic parking brake retaining clip (BMW part # 34 40 6 854 898) deforms due to age/heat. The cable guide does not hold the cable in place anymore and Hazardously starts to rub against the rotating driveshaft, causing the Emergency parking lines which makes a noise that and sounds like coming from the center console. This is endangering the occupants, and also it is very costly replacement with the same plastic part again. The steering rack in the car failed prior to 100,000 miles. BMW has had issues from models 2012 to 2015 and recalled their steering racks. The same issue was happening in the 2016 year.

The central locking system frequently goes out and I'd have to replace the three doors actuators that don't work consistently. many times I'm locked in the car with the only way of getting out is by lowering the window and climbing out. according to my service advisor at BMW, this is a known problem with different models of BMW in this time frame. I really wish it would be considered a recall so at least myself and my family will feel safe and know that I can escape the car if necessary.

There is an issue with older BMWs (2016 BMW F30 body style in my case), the door handle stickiness issue. Even there's a name for it created by BMW service, it is called "Melting Door Handle". There are thousands of complaints and actually a solution (a bad one) by third parties, Lego-Like part to cover the sticky handle. I believe this should be recalled regardless if it is a safety issue or not. BMW charges $1000 to replace the handle. I had it once and it went bad again. Hi BMW I have noticed issues with my seatbelts but more specifically my engine light keeps turning on. My driving seat will not buckle. Simple last Saturday.

When I drive and come to a stop, the car shifts into nuetral. This has happened several times. I have to put the car in Park and restart it. We have checked the codes and have replaced the battery. The car only has 51k miles on it and is not driven more than 2-4 days a week.

I was at a red light while driving my car.When I stepped on the gas once the light turned green the car stalled and started jerking i immediately smelled smoked and seen smoke coming through the cabin..lt made a strange sound from the engine The service engine light came on and said reduced engine power/ drive train malfunction get service immediately.I was able to coast the car to a curb luckily in front of a car shop as soon as i can get out of the car a worker from the shop ran outside yelling your car is on fire! We lift the hood and he had a water hose on the side of the shop he then sprayed the area of the fire and it was put out.I have kept regular routine maintenance on the car no prior signs of car malfunctioning or service engine light on no warning at all this was unexpected.This occurred February 8th 2022 I had the vehicle towed to my local Firestone auto care and they said the ignition coils were melted and something strange happened and to check with bmw because it was too catastrophic for them to fix since then I have had the vehicle at my home parked and after calling bmw they said there were no known recalls at the time…

Car is smoking when starting upon looking up this is a common issue with my 2016 bmw 328i m sport. From what I have been reading bmw knows of the issue and made a change to the part but are making customers come out of pocket to buy the updated part and pay for the repair.

ON MARCH 22, 2021, I WAS PARKING MY 2016 BMW GRAN TURISMO 328X AT A PARKING GARAGE. II HAD COMPLETED THE INITIAL TURN-IN, WHEN THE CAR FELT LIKE THE ACCELERATOR HAD BEEN PUSHED TO THE FLOOR. THE CAR WENT FROM APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES AN HOUR TO ABOUT 20 MPH IN THE LENGTH OF A PARKING SPOT. THE CAR HIT THE CONCRETE BARRIER HEAD ON, WITH THE SIDE CURTAIN, STEERING WHEEL AND LEG AIR BAGS DEPLOYING. THE CAR WAS FULLY MAINTAINED AND SERVICED BY THE BMW DEALER WITH BRAND NEW TIRES. IT HAD ABOUT 78K MILES ON IT. THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING DID NOT GO OFF NOR DID THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING OCCUR. I ASKED THE REPAIR FACILITY TO CHECK OUT WHY THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, BUT WAS TOLD THAT ACCIDENTS HAPPEN AND THAT THE CAR WAS TOTALED ANYWAY. I DID NOT PRESS THE ACCELERATOR 'ACCIDENTALLY'. I HAVE HAD HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF DRIVERS TRAINING AND EVASIVE MANUVERING BECAUSE OF MY JOB AND DO NOT MAKE MISTAKES LIKE THAT. I AM GRATEFUL THAT NO ONE OTHER THAN I WAS HURT AND THAT THERE WAS THE CONCRETE BARRIER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS A POLICE REPORT MADE. THE CAR HAS BEEN TOTALED AS THERE WAS MORE THAN 15K DAMAGE. USAA HAS THE CAR.

VEHICLE HAS UNDER 30,000 MILES AND REQUIRES A NEW POWER STEERING MODULE WHICH INCLUDES THE RACK AND PINION STEERING ASSEMBLY, NEW COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND WHEEL ALIGNMENT. THE FACTORY INSTALLED POWER STEERING ASSEMBLY MODULE IS TURNING OFF AND BACK ON; WHEN OFF THERE IS NO POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE MAKE IF VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER THE CAR ESPECIALLY AT SLOWER SPEEDS. WHEN THE POWER STEERING COMES BACK ON AND THE VEHICLE IS AT SPEED IT CREATES A VERY SENSITIVE STEERING WHEEL WHICH CAUSES DRIVER TO OVER STEER THE VEHICLE. WHEN MAKING A SHARP TURN LIKE WHEN TURNING ONTO ANOTHER STREET AND THE POWER STEERING IS OUT THE DRIVER HAS TO "MUSCLE" THE STEERING WHEEL TO MAKE THE TURN; IF DURING THAT TURN THE POWER STEERING ASSIST RETURNS THIS CAUSES THE DRIVER TO OVER STEER THE CAR EITHER INTO TRAFFIC OR OFF THE ROAD. AS OF 10/07/2020 THE POWER STEERING ASSIST IS COMPLETELY OUT AND THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.

THIS HAPPENED TWO SEPARATE TIMES ABOUT 2 WEEKS APART.. THE CAR WAS STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT. FOOT ON BRAKE. SUDDENLY ENGINE STARTED REVVING AND CAR LEAPED FORWARD. BRAKE DID NOT STOP IT. THE SECOND TIME, (AUGUST 31, 2020) THE CAR REARED-ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT, POSSIBLY CAUSING INJURY TO THAT DRIVER. NEITHER CAR WAS HARMED.

THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING AT 30 MPH WHEN INSTEPPED ON THE BREAKS AND IT KEPT MOVING. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT THEY FIX THE BREAK. THEO DAYS AGO I WAS PROMPTED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.

ENGINE REVVED UNCONTROLLABLY WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL, I WAS FORCED TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. THE CAR BEHAVED NORMALLY ONCE THE ENGINE WAS RESTARTED: I WAS TURNING LEFT INTO A PARKING SPACE IN A PARKING LOT AT A VERY SLOW SPEED. MY FOOT WAS OFF THE GAS PEDAL AS I WAS BRAKING AND COMING TO A STOP. SUDDENLY (WITH FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE AND NOT THE GAS PEDAL) THE ENGINE REVVED TO A HIGH RPM WHICH LURCHED THE CAR FORWARD A BIT. SINCE I WAS ALREADY BRAKING, I WAS ABLE TO REACT QUICKLY AND PRESS DOWN EVEN HARDER ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND KEPT IT IN PLACE. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV AND I SHIFTED INTO PARK. THE ENGINE STAYED REVVED AT VERY HIGH RPMS AS IF I WAS FLOORING THE GAS PEDAL, EVEN THOUGH I COULD LOOK DOWN AND CONFIRM THAT MY FOOT WAS ONLY ON THE BRAKE. AT THIS POINT I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND WAITED SEVERAL MINUTES. I CHECKED THE FLOOR MAT AND CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS NOT OUT OF PLACE OR AFFECTING THE PEDALS IN ANY WAY. I THEN STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN AND THE CAR IDLED NORMALLY WITH NO ISSUES. I TESTED DRIVING AT A SLOW SPEED AND PULLED INTO SEVERAL MORE PARKING SPOTS TO SEE IF THE ISSUE WOULD REOCCUR, BUT IT DID NOT. I DROVE HOME NORMALLY AND PARKED WITHOUT FURTHER PROBLEMS, AND WILL BE TAKING THE CAR TO A MECHANIC AS SOON A POSSIBLE.

THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE FEATURE OF SHIFTING INDEPENDENTLY INTO PARK WAS A FAIL SAFE MODE FOR THE BATTERY POWER REDUCTION. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,750.

I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE THAT IT WAS THE DRIVESHAFT THAT CAUSED THIS. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE DRIVESHAFT AND THE FLANGE LOOSENED COMPLETELY. THERE ARE PREVIOUS RECALLS FOR THIS WITH BMW. THE VEHICLE WAS ON A HIGHWAY, GOING 65MPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS VIBRATION AND NOISE FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. ALL OF A SUDDEN IT SLOWED DOWN TO THE POINT WHERE IT WOULD NO LONGER DRIVEABLE. I WAS GOING 5MPH (BARELY) TO GET OFF THE EXIT AND WAS NOT ABLE TO MAKE A TURN. I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO A SAFE PARKING LOT 10 FEET AWAY. ONCE I WAS SAFE, THE CARE SHUTDOWN AND WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO TURN BACK ON. OIL WAS COMING OUT OF THE CAR.

THE VEHICLE FRONT END WILL SHAKE AND LURCH LEFT AND RIGHT WHEN DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. WHEN DRIVING AT OR BELOW 25MPH, AND A SMALL BUT SHARP BUMP IN THE ROAD IS DRIVEN OVER, THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN WILL SHAKE AND THE SUSPENSION IN THE FRONT (IN PARTICULAR THE DRIVERS SIDE) WILL MAKE A LOUD CLUNKING/POPPING SOUND. I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY THE DEALERSHIP 2 TIMES. THEY TELL ME THAT THE NOISE IS NORMAL AND COMMON ON THIS YEAR AND MAKE. WHEN GOING ONLINE AND TYPING INTO GOOGLE "2016 BMW 328I STEERING NOISE/SUSPENSION NOISE" THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF REPORTS OF EXACTLY WHAT I'M EXPERIENCING. BEING SUNDAY, NO-ONE COULD ADVISE ON A TEMPORARY SOLUTION, CALLED BMW SOS AND ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, THEY COULD DO NOTHING. I THOUGHT IT COULD BE POSSIBLE THE COILS FROZE UP, LIKE IN YOUR HOME, I SHUT THE AC OFF COMPLETELY AND HAD TO DRIVE WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN. THIS CORRECTED THE PROBLEM, BRIEFLY. I HAD TO CONTINUE ON A 4 HOUR DRIVE IN THIS HEAT WITH MY SENIOR DOG, MISERABLE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT . I LEASE MY CAR, IT IS PERFECTLY MAINTAINED AND HAD JUST BEEN IN FOR SERVICE. MONDAY I CALLED THE SERVICE CENTER AND THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE ISSUE WAS, ESSENTIALLY FROZE UP AND THEY HAD A SOLUTION, A MANUAL OVERRIDE OF THE SOFTWARE. THANKFUL THEY HAD A SOLUTION BUT MORE CONCERNING, BMW IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, AS I FOUND OUT ON MANY POSTS. THE CONCERNING PART, I HAVE NEVER TAKEN MY CAR ON A DRIVE LONGER THAN AN HOUR EXCEPT THIS TIME AND THE AC GOES OUT, THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN A LUXURY VEHICLE. THEY NEED TO NOTIFY THEIR CUSTOMERS THIS IS A POSSIBILITY AND THAT THEY HAVE A SOLUTION, I WOULD HAVE NEVER TAKEN THIS CAR ON A TRIP KNOWING IT WAS ENDANGERING MY SENIOR DOG, WHAT IF IT WAS A CHILD? BMW SHOULD NOTIFY THEIR CUSTOMERS OF THIS OCCURRING SO PEOPLE CAN BE AWARE AND MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS BEFORE RISKING AND AWFUL DRIVE. UPON EMAILING BMW CORP

I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO APPROACH AND STOP AT A RED LIGHT ON A STREET (NOT HIGHWAY) AND MY CAR WASN'T BRAKING. IT THEN STOPPED. AFTER IT BRAKED AND I WAS SITTING AT THE RED LIGHT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE FULLY STOPPED AND STATIONARY FOR APPROXIMATELY 10-20 SECONDS MY CAR ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING AND HIT THE BACK OF THE CAR AHEAD OF ME. THE IMPACT CAUSED A TINY SCRATCH ON THE DRIVERS BUMPER FROM MY LICENSE PLATE. HIS CAR WAS OLD AND HIS BUMPER ALREADY DAMAGED, SO HE WASN'T TOO CONCERNED ABOUT THE SCRATCH. WE PULLED OFF TO A NEARBY PARKING LOT AND HE CHECKED UNDER HIS CAR AND UNDER MY CAR TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NO DAMAGE OTHER THAN THE SMALL SCRATCH AND WE PARTED WAYS. I CALLED THE MY BMW SERVICE CENTER FIRST THING THE NEXT MORNING AND BROUGHT MY CAR IN. TWO MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, MY CAR STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING ON A STREET WITH NO TRAFFIC WHEN I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 20-30 MILES PER HOUR. I ASSUMED THAT SOMETHING SET OFF ONE OF THE SENSORS, BUT THIS IS NOT A STREET WHERE PEOPLE OR ANIMALS WOULD BE CROSSING AND NO ONE WAS IN THE STREET. THEIR CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS IN NJ SENT IN A FIELD REPRESENTATIVE AND INSPECTED THE CAR. AN EXECUTIVE CUSTOMER CARE REPRESENTATIVE FROM BMW'S NJ CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS GOT BACK TO ME YESTERDAY REPORTING THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES WITH THE CAR AND I CAN PICK IT UP AT ANYTIME. THEY COULD OFFER ME NO EXPLANATION FOR THIS OCCURRENCE AND I AM TERRIFIED TO GET BACK IN THIS CAR. I AM ESTIMATING THE MILEAGE ON MY CAR AS 25,000
