Pierce Manufacturing: Vehicle Speed Control › Accelerator Pedal

Pierce Manufacturing reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 26, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 5,022. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

PIERCE IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1999-2008 ARROW XT, DASH, LANCE, AND ENFORCER FIRE APPARATUS MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 22, 1999, THROUGH MAY 12, 2008, AND EQUIPPED WITH AN ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR PEDAL. AFTER REPEATED USE WITH EXCESSIVE FORCE, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARM MAY BEND AND CAUSE THE PEDAL TO MOVE CLOSER TO THE FLOOR. IF THE PEDAL ARM BENDS FAR ENOUGH, THE PEDAL MAY CONTACT THE CAB FLOOR WITHOUT WARNING AND STICK IN THE FULL THROTTLE POSITION.

The risk

IF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMES STUCK, THE OPERATOR MAY LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE EXISTING ACCELERATOR ARM AND INSTALL A REDESIGNED PEDAL ARM FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT MAY 9, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PIERCE AT 1-920-832-3000.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V255000.
