End of July, the engine died on the highway when performing an emergency swerve to avoid a collision. This is an issue that is subject to the settlement of one of the several related class action lawsuits against Kia/Hyundai for catastrophic engine failures but not, to my knowledge, one of the specified engine models. There were no warning signs or indicators. No knocking, no noticeable oil consumption, no reported findings of metal filings or shavings in the oil at regular oil changes, no warning lights until it died at 70mph in highway traffic. Kia is replacing the engine with a refurb of the exact same engine model so I expect that it, too, will catastrophically fail at some point. I doubt the engine will be available for inspection by a third party, including the government, as the manufacturer is recycling them into refurbs to other affected vehicles. The local dealer shop inspected it and said it's dead, and covered under the (settlement enforced) extended warranty.

I was driving on the freeway and my car suddenly jolted, smoked started pouring from the hood, and then immediately caught fire once I pulled off the road within minutes. There were no warnings, no engine lights, nothing that pointed to an issue until this happened. I was at risk of getting hit by others in the freeway — I luckily was able to get to the side of the road and immediately called 911. Fire department came within minutes, and dowsed the car, which was fully engulfed in flames.

My check engine light came on several monthsago. I replaced the gas cap three times! This did not seem to remedy the problem. The check engine light would come on shortly thereafter. I've been parking my car away from buildings and home and I have noticed that the grassy area where I park has died on the left hand side (the driver side) where I park. There must be a leak. I can hear gurgling from the gas tank! There is a a ping sound shortly after I shut off the vehicle. I'm very worried that my car is going to catch fire! You can hear gurgling (soon after engine is running) I have had the oil changed and asked if they could look at the undercarriage to see if there was anything unusual going on they did not see anything. Also, the throat of the fuel tank keeps getting rusty. The outter entrance always gets grimy. I guess water and or rain must be leaking down into the entrance. I have never owned a car where I had to continuously maintain the gas fuel tank entrance area! In summary, there are three problems. An emissions problem related to the fuel tank gurgglng and leaking fuel. Second, the throat of the fuel tank keeps rusting. Three, the entrance of the fuel tank. it's always dirty, and grimy as if something has leaked inside! it needs constant attention. I will be taking my car in to do recall replacement repairs soon. I will ask them to check the fuel emissions problem as well at Crain Kia in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

About two months ago, my car began using excessive amounts of oil. Each time, I replaced the oil, the oil check light would come on after two weeks. I had the gasket replaced in the month of June, 2023. On July 2, 2023, on my way home from work, my vehicle began losing power. When I pulled over and turned the car off, it would not restart. When it did, it did not have power and it began to shake. On July 3, 2023, I took my car to the dealership and was later told by my service advisor that I needed a new engine. I was told that it was the combustion. My vehicle has been at the dealership for a month and 1 week.

On June 19th 2023, the engine to my 2017 Kia Sportage failed with little indication and time to response. Prior to this occurring, my Kia Sportage experienced two instances of limp mode which is an sensor program for the car to diminish efficiency to avoid continued failure. Whist I thought this issue was resolved on May 18 2023, after the first instance of limp mode, I was not fully prepared for the engine to fail so quickly. All three instances (twice limp mode and once engine failure) put my life at risk. The safety of the drivers around me were also endangered due to this taking place. The engine failure has been confirmed with Kia Motors/Greenway Kia West Dealership and both have agreed to replace the engine to my Kia Sportage. I was informed on 6/26 that Kia Motors requested a video of my engine failure. Details on this were not fully shared with me at the time of submitting this report. The engine light warning came on at the times of limp mode only in which my speedometer diminished from 60-80 mph down to 30mph in less than 10 seconds. When the engine failed, as I was braking coming to a stop light, I received no indication until the moment the engine failed while braking. This also put my safety at risk- I was on a busy roadway in the middle of the night and the failure occurring with my car kept my hazard lights from visibility to others on the road.

My safety is put at risk in that all windows not functioning does not allow for fresh air to the cabin, constantly having to use the A/C. Opening the sunroof causes reverberation and popping of the ears. Windows will have to be broken in the event that driver or passenger can’t open door from the inside after possible collision. My car is consuming oil at an alarming rate. This is a daily driver family car that my wife uses to drop and pick my daughter from and to school. I am really concerned the car is going to run of oil and could end up in more serious problem. I have informed the dealer twice and they even determined the car is consuming more than one quart of oil in less that 800 miles. That is way above the acceptable consumption rate of 1 quart per 1000 miles as specified in the national highway traffic safety administration recall I received in the mail. My main concern is the dealer refused to do anything. I have on record from the dealer the oil consumption test they performed but, I was told it was not covered by the recall. I was even informed that I will have to pay more $400 for some kind of engine oil consumption cleaner. I have contacted KIA to give them an opportunity to make this right. But, it has been few weeks and no response.

I have taken my 2017 kia sportage in the dealer several times due to loss of power and hesitation when trying to accelerate. They always say they cant find any issue. Also, my Kia is using or losing oil. I get oil changed every 5000 miles and the last two changes I had less then the low mark, barely showing on dip stick. I have had to add quarts of oil after only 2000 miles since oil change. Oil light does not come on, even when showing no oil on dip stick. It is very scary when I go to accelerate and nothing happens when trying to get on on rap for highway.

The engine was misfiring causing issues when trying to reach the posted speed limit. This was/is especially dangerous when having to get on the interstate where vehicles are going up to 80 mph. The engine light did come on. Took the vehicle to a certified KIA dealer where the confirmed the problem and said a new engine was needed. New engine was ordered and replaced (took 4 months to get new engine in) and then a month later the same thing happened again.

I got a 2017 Kia Sportage May 2022 and in September 2022 I started having problems with it I have taken it to the Kia dealership 3-4 times once even by tow. I have been told by the workers at the dealership that the engine needs to be replaced (car has roughly 87,000 miles). I was driving it down the road and it made a noise and lost power I literally had to floor it just to go around 30-40mph. Now it shakes, it's missing, and it has smoke coming from the exhaust on top of the oil consumption problem that I found out about after purchasing ad was told Kia knows about the problem. I haven't had it a year and can't drive it on the highway or nowhere else because of the possible engine fire hazard when I have a toddler in a car seat in the back seat that I may not be able to get out if fire was to happen. This is my only means of transportation nobody wants to take it as a trade-in because of the known problems with kia. And my car insurance has since doubled because of the liability of the vehicle and all the problems and safety concerns and I need answers because I wouldn't recommend any one to purchase a kia.

I purchased my car in September 2017 and in or around July 2022 my front passenger window would not open. In the next few months the back passenger windows and front driver-side window as well. After taking it to Benson Kia on 4/17/23 they told me that for 1 its a Good Will repair and only for the front windows on 4/22/23 I received a call saying that they declined the repair due to mileage on the car which is roughly around 94,000 miles. I will be lookin into getting an attorney for this issue since this is not normal wear and tear for this vehicle after 5 years and I have vehicles that are almost over 10 years older and are not having any issues of the sort. After research, I have found a class action lawsuit for the windows for 2016 and 2017 Optima and Sportage models on Carcomplaints.com

As I was driving one day my car began to "miss" or jump. The check engine light illuminated and began blinking. I took the truck home and parked it. The next day I cranked the vehicle to see what it would do. Smoke began coming from my exhaust. We turned the car off and I had someone check my oil. It was extremely low. I've had the car looked at by a professional. I was told the turbo is gone. I was quoted $4700 at one place and $7500 at another. This seems to be a similar issue everyone is having. I feel like the Dealership should be able to exchange this SUV for something better for me to drive. Or this problem should've already been fixed by KIA --- so here are my thoughts either KIA can send me a Voucher for fixing problem, or Kia or Kayser Ford in Sauk City, WI can give me a new SUV that ranges in the price of $18,000 i would like to get this issue resolved or if i have to i will get a lawyer involved in this. Rear doors are randomly not able to be opened from outside or inside door handles. Multiple clicks of drivers door unlock / lock will sometimes (30-50 clicks) will allow the door to open from the inside handle. Once opened from the inside door handle the outside handle will work until the door is relocked. The locking mechanism clicks ( sounds like other doors ) removal of the door panel did not reveal any clips broken or cables disconnected. It appears the lock solenoid is not traveling far enough. The left rear door is out least used door. If this happens to the right side rear door, passengers would be stuck inside as the door won’t open from the inside or outside. This could ( would ) create an extreme safety hazard. We are reluctant to use the vehicle with more than 2 people due to the potential of trapping someone as one door already failed.

My 2017 Kia Sportage has been a problem for several months and I have taken or had it taken (by tow truck) to the dealership several times. Engine not running properly, oil consumption, making strange noises and have been told that there was nothing that they could find or they would say they fixed something minor. The problems just keep compounding. The last incident happened while I was driving on the interstate and the engine started sort of vibrating and the check engine light came on. The car slowed in the middle of rush hour traffic and wouldn't go over 40 or 45 mph. The car had been using an excessive amount of oil prior to this so I always carried extra with me. The oil light never came on no matter how low the oil was. I was finally able to exit the interstate and get to a safe place to stop. I checked the oil and it did not even register on the dipstick. I checked it at least 2 times a week at this point because it was consuming so much oil. I had the car picked up and taken to Carriage Kia by tow truck. The dealership told me that the car needed a new engine because one of the cylinders was damaged and that it wasn't covered by the engine replacement recall, because they didn't have a recall for oil consumption.

We recently received an 'interim' recall notice due the potential for fire caused by a flaw in the tow hitch wiring harness. The letter recommended parking the car 'away from other vehicles and people', and nothing else, as Kia has not yet determined what a permanent remedy would be. This is really not acceptable, as we need to use our vehicle and this requires occasionally parking it in locations where it cannot be kept separated from other vehicles or people. In addition, this remedy only reduces the potential damage to others or their vehicles, it does not do anything to reduce the potential damage to our vehicle. I took the vehicle to our local repair shop and they were able to disconnect the 'ground' wire from the tow hitch wiring harness quickly and easily, so that no power will flow into the wiring harness and it will not catch on fire. Given how easy this was to do, Kia should have offered this as a solution, or should be willing to reimburse owners for having this change made to their vehicles during the 'interim' recall period.

The door lock on the driver's side stopped working. Door would not open from the outside: not with the key fob or with the key inserted in the lock. If the car was locked and then unlocked with the key fob, the only way to open the driver's side door was to get in the car through the passenger's side and open the driver's side door with the door handle. You could THEN pull the driver's side door closed and exit the car from the passenger's side, walk around the car, and the driver's side door would be unlocked. This is VERY unsafe because if I, as a woman, am threatened in a parking lot and cannot enter the car quickly, I could be at risk. I took it to a Kia dealer to have this fixed, but they wanted me to leave the car for 2-3 weeks just to diagnose (not fix) it! RIDICULOUS. Contacted another Kia dealer who would not even look at the car unless we had purchased it from them. I had it fixed independently. OEM latch assembly was replaced. Horrible service from Kia. There should be a recall on this.
