Engine has slowed itself for years, even while pressing gas pedal, the mph and engine would sound like it revved up then go dark on me while coming to an uncontrolled stop.
2017 Kia Sportage complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2017 record →
All the windows in the car do not go up and down, I can hear the motor moving but no movement with the windows. Started with the rear passenger window, then front passenger, followed by rear driver and ultimately driver window.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that the driver's side front door failed to open as needed. While using the key fob, all the other doors were unlocked. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was like a limited extended warranty coverage. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated while driving on several occasions at various speeds, the ABS, Traction Control, and Hill Start Assist warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that an unknown sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, when the vehicle was taken for an oil change, the mechanic saw that there was no oil in the engine. The contact stated that oil was added to the vehicle but was consumed after two thousand miles of diving. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000.
Engine seized on my way to work on July 26,2024. Oil consumption, riding rough.
The sunroof spontaneously exploded. Sunroof was closed at the time. AC on. Driving on the highway. Loud band and glass pieces rained down. Made it to the next exit to assess damage. No warning that this would happen. No debris hit the car. I have contacted my insurance about this, USAA. Kia said that they won’t cover this or repair for free. And in fact said that they haven’t heard of such a thing, though Kia models have one of the highest chances of this happening
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle was jerking while shifting between gear. The contact also stated that the vehicle lunged forward while accelerating and was vibrating while decelerating. The contact stated that there was a loud clicking sound coming from the dashboard. The contact stated there was a burning odor coming from the vents. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the engine was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that several miles away after picking up the vehicle from the local dealer, the check engine warning light illuminated and the failures recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 113,598.
Kia has a problem with window motors and regulators why is this not a safety issue. The car made in 2015 and 2016 which is this 2017 model apparently has this issue they sent out memos to dealers yet are charging people to have them fixed. This is the second time I had the motor replaced in 2021 on this very window but it was under warranty then. This should be a safety issue and be addressed
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, there was an abnormally strong gasoline odor coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle, after 15 minutes of driving, a quarter tank of fuel had been consumed. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 168,000.
The front panel of the sunroof spontaneously exploded as I was driving down the interstate. There were no vehicles in front of me, and clear skies above me. No rock or debris hit my vehicle to cause this. Had my interior sunroof cover not been closed, glass shards would have fallen onto my baby in the car seat, and myself in the front seat! Not to mention the horrible gun shot/bomb like noise that was so disorienting while driving. There were no warnings or signs that this would happen. Terrifying! Thank goodness the cover was closed and there were no vehicles near me!
The rear passenger door will not open. This is a safety concern should we need to exit the vehicle rapidly in an accident. Other KIA Sportage vehicles are on the recall, but for some reason, my VIN model is not on the list for recall.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle started losing motive power with the check engine warning light and several other unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was restarted but the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis. The contact was informed that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.
Car shuts off while driving on interstate, causing loss of power steering and requiring navigation to shoulder before restarting. Car will restart. This is an intermittent issue. Had car repair work replacing the Crank Shaft Position Sensor at KIA Dealership and after picking up, it happened twice in the same week. Dealership is not able to reproduce the issue and unable to resolve. Car is not safe to drive. This has occurred at least 5 times.
Four window regulators failed within a few days of each other. The first front widows failed at the beginning of December 2023 and the back two failed a week later. The back windows dropped down while I was driving. Thankfully, no children were in the backseat. There was no warning that this was going to occur. The regulators are independent of each other yet all four broke. The windows lost all power and could not be rolled up. I was not able to roll up any of my windows until I paid to have them fixed at a Kia dealership in April. This was a safety issue (theft, unpredictable windows falling, heat inside the car, extreme cold temperatures couldn't be blocked out, etc.) until they were fixed at a costly price-$2,168. Two Kia service advisors confirmed the four window regulators and/ or drums needed replaced. The service advisor was aware of the problem on other vehicles and was not surprised at that all four independent regulators broke. The four regulators have been fixed therefore I do not have the failed/broken part. I have my service record however. I contacted Kia headquarters to request a recall be made on their defective product but they were not responsive. I was given a case # but nothing else.
Engine stalling and slowing when going over 35 mph. Noticed recalls for other Kia engines for the same thing why have the Turbo engines not been recalled?? Not safe when you are getting on an interstate and traffic is going 80 mph.
Window regulator drum or window regulator not responding saw open recall but my vin isn’t comming up under the recall SA-148 service from 2020
I have the KSDS and the engine light came on right when my engine began shaking and knocking and died in the middle of downtown Chicago traffic while driving. I had it towed to the dealership and they stated that I had no compressions in a cylinder which is part of the engine and I needed a replacement engine. My vehicle had regular maintenance at Kia they change my oil, add coolant and anything that is needed and they never told me that it was burning oil and had any other issues nor did they at any time say the compression was low or going bad. If they didn’t notice how was I to know, it’s not tires where I can go put air in them. The incident was very frightening and sudden and could have cost bodily injury. The settlement states the rod bearing issue, however the compression cylinders are on the short block and I had the KSDS and whether or not it’s the rod bearing Kia needs to own the engine issues period because they know the compression cylinders issues were going to happen. The settlement was not written very exclusive to rod bearing with Kia updated warranty coverage letter dated April 2, 2021. This has and is happening to thousands of Kia owners and we honestly don’t know who to contact because Kia is not helping nor do they care. I promise you if you put out a notice or survey about this issue you will be shocked to learn how many people are actually affected by this issue with no known resources/resolution .
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds, there was a knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle to the independent mechanic at undisclosed speeds, the knocking sound increased in volume and the vehicle shut off. The vehicle was towed to the independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with a lower engine knock failure. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with the same failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000.
I took my car to the Kia dealer because I burn I was smelling burn oil. They told me that it wasn’t burn oil. It was the rubber burning I replace the inner and I’m still smelling the oil burning. I’m putting in oil four times a week, and they still not tell me why I’m putting so much oil then I want to say because I do too much highway mileage that’s why I probably burn it so much oil, but that should be impossible.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated while reversing in a parking lot, the contact became aware that there was a significant amount of engine oil had leaked onto the ground. The contact stated that she added oil to the vehicle and drove to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the oil pressure switch had failed, causing oil intrusion in the wiring harness and in the computer and components. The dealer determined that the wiring harness, the computer, and the oil pressure switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.
All the windows have just randomly failed down. The last one was my passenger back window on my way to work with it pouring down rain this morning. The first incident was about a year and a half ago, the driver's side window fell, and the window shattered. Took to glass shop and they said regulator needed to be replaced and they put in when they installed new glass. I went to Texarkana Kia dealer ship were bought car and bought a regulator and thought problem was solved. Several months later the window did not work so took back to glass shop that fixed they said regulator not working again. The Glass Shop took off and I got a replacement one at Kia and talked to several people of how my windows were acting but no one said a word about my certain model did had a problem with the regulators.
My engine failed. I had to continuously fill it up with oil due to it going through oil like crazy. I scheduled a maintenance on it and the day of the appointment, a rod threw in my engine due to oil deprivation. i also had just put a quart of oil in the day BEFORE the engine went out. Kia states the engine recall is only for certain 2017 Kia’s - i say otherwise. there have been more people complain on facebook in a whole group where the same exact thing happened to them. i kept up on my maintenance. i loved my car. now i’m left to figure out 9k to fix the engine! this is not right. i have never been late on my payments, i have only had 1 place to change my oil and that is the dealership i purchased the vehicle from. i have no vehicle! i am a single mother of 2. i can’t have no vehicle. i have seen so many settlements of engine failures and oil deprivation
After an oil change and driving the vehicle 375 miles the oil level is between full and low. This would be an excessive oil consumption issue.
This engine is consuming oil in excess of 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles. This could leave to engine failure, resulting in loss of control and propulsion leading to a possible collision.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The vehicle's engine has failed and the timing is off, causing knocking sounds. The diagnostic results are indicating codes P0014 and P1326. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? There have been reports of the vehicle catching fire so if I continued to drive the vehicle it could result in a major catastrophic event. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, I had the vehicle diagnosed by an independent dealer, and the car is waiting for the next appointment to return to the KIA dealership where the initial purchase was made. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, the engine light came on in September 2021, two months after I purchased the vehicle. The dealership said that it was nothing, and all the diagnostic codes came back fine at that time.
While driving on the highway, vehicle lost all electrical power. The engine stayed running, but I lost use of anything electrical including the power steering, headlights, and dashboard functions. Vehicle power resumed after about a minute and we made it home, but the vehicle would not start after this. After calling our KIA dealership they advised taking the vehicle in immediately via tow. After looking through the vehicle, it was found that a fuse inside of the battery harness had melted. This caused the battery cable to heat up to ~200 degrees. The cause is still unclear, but we worry about this happening in the future. We are still waiting for the cable to be replaced at this time.
First owner 2017 Kia Sportage SX (NOTE SX specifically) AWD 2.0L Turbo Gas Direct Injection (4-cyl engine) (no recalls found) - EXCESSIVE Oil Consumption since early/mid 2023 and continues still today, [XXX]. We lose over 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles, did not discover this until an oil change in early 2023 how low our oil was. No leaks then, no leaks now, oil maintenance performed, we have meticulous records and have been to the #1 Cochran Robinson Township Kia dealership where they have perform Kias required Oil Consumption Test that we've paid for. 1st set of test failed each time, dealership performed deep clean, and since there was only 3/4 quart loss, Kia had no further responsibilities. too busy with our small business over the holidays, started Oil Consumption test, again [XXX]. Every single time we hit 1,000 miles (monthly) we are down over 1+ quarts of oil, with no leaks anywhere. Added 40 ounces of oil (I have photos) a few days before we decided to get the Oil Consumption test again. PLS NOTE: There are quite a few MODELS and ENGINES listed in recalls or perhaps lawsuits for excessive oil consumption, our SX model 2.0L Turbo Gas Direct Injection (4 cyl) specifically is not. Over the past 7 months, we have lost over 8 quarts of oil, and have had 2 maintenance oil changes in between, part of normal maintenance. Looking online there are thousands of posts regarding Kia Excessive Oil Consumption, Kia states losing 1 quart every 1,000 miles is acceptable? How can th
Engine failed on the highway. Car is part of the class action lawsuit but dealer is refusing to replace engine for free. Asking me to pay $7k. Claiming that DTC is reading P0303.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact heard an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with failed rod bearings. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact was also informed that the engine was replaced with a used engine. The contact stated that the engine had previously been replaced three times by the dealer within three years. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with a failed engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced another time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
The car is consuming/leaking oil. The leak is from the oil pressure switch and traveling to the main engine harness which may cause a fire or engine to suddenly fail. Check engine light is on and the engine idles high due to Kia diagnosed Cam Phaser issue that had a TSB issued in 2016. This TSB was not completed during the warranty period, and Kia won't remedy this even though I owned the car when it was under warranty.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that while at a scheduled oil change, the contact was informed by the local mechanic that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil, causing damaged to the engine rods. The check oil warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the vehicle was not repaired due to the cost to replace the engine. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start on two occasions. The contact stated that on each occasion, the vehicle was towed to a dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure, and the engine was replaced twice. The contact stated that while the vehicle was being serviced at an independent mechanic, he was informed that there was an abnormal ticking sound coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced a third time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
I have taken my sportage to the service department multiple times due to having to add oil multiple times after an oil change. They told me that the engine needs to be fixed but won't fix it until the car stops working. Now they are telling us that it isn't going to matter because they aren't going to cover the engine.
I took my vehicle in three times for excessive oil consumption. It’s been going through three quarts every thousand miles. The first oil consumption test ran over by 100 miles and the dealer made me do another one. It was determined that 3 1/2 quarts of oil were burned in thousand miles . There was no other diagnostic done. The dealer told me that the warranty does not cover oil consumption when I advise them that oil consumption is a side effect of the real problem which is most likely the rod bearing issue and I did get the update so the engine is supposedly covered lifetime by Kia Dealer and Chia have been going back-and-forth to no resolution and today I was told that it’s a piston failure not rod failure, but neither of those things have been checked out. I was told I would have to pay for an engine breakdown and then Chia America told me to get another opinion from another Kia dealer , in the meantime, my car is burning like crazy. It’s pinging on acceleration, and occasionally when I start it shutters and cuts off.
I was driving home on i-91 S when my car started smoking from under the hood. There were no warning lights and the temperature gauge read normal with the lever at the center. I pulled off at the next Exit and parked in a parking lot. I popped the hood and found that a fire had started around the engine. The fire grew to the point that the whole front half of the car was burned before the fire department was able to put it out. The vehicle was assessed by my insurance, but I think the extent of that was to determine whether it was a total loss (which it obviously was).
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH and depressing the brake pedal to slow for traffic or a traffic signal, the contact required more force to depress the brake pedal before the vehicle would slow. The contact became aware that while making a right turn, excessive pressure was needed to depress the brake pedal. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact also stated that while depressing the brake pedal to make an abrupt stop, the front brakes made an abnormal sound like loosened pieces of metal bouncing around in the front wheels. Additionally, the contact stated that her rear brake light bulbs were burning out frequently and the brake light wiring was melted. The contact stated that the failure was recurring. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rear taillight wiring needed to be replaced. The taillight bulbs and the wires were replaced. The mechanic also determined that the brake pads and calipers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failures reoccurred. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Driving as usual and all of a sudden no acceleration. No warning lights at all. Started smoking. Towed to Flynn’s. They said there is a known oil consumption issue and the motor locked up. Communicated with KIA and they say to have it looked at - at a cost. Said it’s not under warranty. But is a likely know issue!
I purchased a used vehicle by way of a loan from "Affinity Plus Credit Union." On 7/27/20 from "Royal Drive Autos" with an extended warranty sold through Affinity Plus Credit Union. The warranty was issued by Route 66 CO. Both parties (Bank & Warranty CO.) granted the loan and warranty understanding there was a “Prior Salvage” title and had been cleared to sell the vehicle. The vehicle has been serviced under recalls by KIA and Route 66 since the purchase of the vehicle. There was a major engine failure believed to be a recall issued by KIA. The vehicle had a “Flashing Engine” light and failed on 9/5/23. I took the vehicle to Luther Bloomington KIA to be serviced on 10/9/23, as this was the earliest appointment available. Once diagnosed the service advisor and the mechanics said that the engine would need to be replaced due to the failure of part. And cannot fix broken part if the engine is not working. KIA denied engine replacement due to "Branded Title." The service adviser then tried to contact Route 66 to see if they would cover the work, they also denied servicing due to having a branded title. Service adviser said to try and get to the bottom of it through route 66. So I called, and they said the bank should've never issued an extended warranty because of the branded title stated on page 2 of the warranty agreement. As it was void/never valid from the start. I talked to Gail Johnson, and she says that it was a mistake to sell the warranty and agreed it should not have b
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sportage. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V703000 (Trailer Hitches); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine revved loudly. No warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, and then the vehicle slid into the ditch. The accelerator pedal was depressed when the contact noticed the rear end of the vehicle had caught fire. The contact panicked and exited the vehicle, injuring his left shin and right foot. Medical attention was received. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. The contact was unaware if a fire department report had been filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard; however, the vehicle was not deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
My car keeps burning oil at a rapid rate. I have to replace every 3 weeks.
My car has a circuit problem and that is causing my engine light go off. Kia is not taking any responsibility os this issue
My daughter and I were driving home from my brother's house, when we stopped by McDonald's to grab food, we noticed our car smoking really bad. I had her pull away from the drive-thru and into the empty parking lot. We got out just seconds before the car burst into flames from underneath the hood of the car.
The vehicle went into limp mode while driving on the interstate but the dealership is telling me there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. They are also telling me that there is no powertrain coverage on this vehicle since I am the second owner. With as many problems as Kia has had, I think it should be across the board for coverage on these so no one else suffers irreparable damage. I’ve had the car shut down on me many times but every single time I’ve taken it in for diagnostic testing I’ve been told there is nothing wrong with it. I call BS. If there was nothing wrong with it, it wouldn’t shut down on me while I’m driving it.

The contact stated that she veered to the side of the road. The contact stated that she inspected the engine oil level and noticed that there was no oil in the engine. The contact stated that she added oil to the vehicle and drove to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that oil was leaking into the combustion chamber, and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The dealer informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure because the warning lights were no longer illuminated and there was oil in the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V224000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
My KIA Sportage 2017 headlights malfunctioned by flickering on and off and the screen and dashboard lights went totally out while I was driving on THE FREEWAY at NIGHT. This happened five times in the span of 30 minutes and each incident lasted approximately five to ten seconds. My car is available for inspection upon request. My safety or the safety of others was put at risk. I worried my lights might actually go out totally, plus drivers on the freeway would be confused and distracted; it might blind them, or possibly result in road rage. This issue has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer nor have the lights been inspected by anyone yet. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the repeated failure. This problem with 2017 KIA Sportage has been reported by others on the internet. KIA, the manufacturer, would not admit to me there is an issue with the lights flickering and the dashboard going black nor what might cause it. They said I could submit a claim for reimbursement AFTER my KIA dealer’s service department gives a diagnostic on the vehicle. I have been issued a KIA Case #. It would be a great benefit to know the cause and the remedy from other KIA vehicle owners that have been repaired. The earliest service appointment available with my KIA service dealer is October 25, 2023. I am not able to drive my car in the dark until this issue has been resolved. This is a great hardship on me because I am a widow and the sole drive

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
