When driving down the the interstate at night, my headlights just turn off while driving. They are on Auto. This has happened multiple times while driving. I have not took it to be looked at yet. There is no warning light or anything else that lets you know that there is a malfunction. The lights just go off. For them to come back on, I have to manually turn it off and back on again, and they will come back on.
2017 Kia Sorento complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2017 record →
Car was running fine no indicators on at all. Got on highway started shaking again no indicators on thought I was driving in uneven pavement at the time. Car started driving ok engine light then came on car started shaking and then stalled. Started it and luckily made it home. Car dealer said the engine was needing to be replaced. Extended warranty stated due to carbon deposit build up caused valve to burn so it will not be covered. This is a 2017 car under 100,000 miles and for the engine to go like this with me owning it for under 50k miles is absurd concerning and frustrating. I still have a loan and am out a car one that I thought would run longer!
The engine was consuming a lot of oil. Lost 2-3 quarts in between oil changes. Kia did an oil consumption test and supposedly fixed the problem by cleaning out the gaskets. Kia told me that if this did not fix the problem they may need to replace the engine. I was told that the cleaning fixed the oil problem. Few months after, car started to loose oil again. Almost dry on oil change. Way before an oil change was due, car engine started shaking on the Highway. Brought it to closest oil changed shop and oil was completely dry. Mechanics at Kia told me that it was the spark plug. After they fixed the spark plug, they told me that there was a dead cylinder misfire and an internal engine failure. Since car had 72000 miles. It was not under warranty anymore. Engine needs to be replaced. Kia is not covering it.
Heavy oil consumption. I just changed my oil 3,500 miles ago and it burned through the whole thing. I am on a group on facebook where hundreds of kia and hyundai drivers have the same issue with a very similar engine. Many have even had big engine fires as a result. This is not a safe care to take your family in. My engine seized up as a result, so I am only a year into my car payments and it is a total loss. I am on a teacher's salary so I can't afford to fix it or get another car.
My car started running badly with a knocking noise at the start. The knocking noise got worse, I so pulled over and checked the oil and there was virtually no oil in the engine. I filled it with oil and the knocking continued and got worse as I drove it to the dealer for service. The engine failed before I could make it to the dealer. It now needs a new engine. The Car was serviced regularly. NO LOW OIL ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON TO NOTIFY ME OF LOW OIL. NO LEAK WAS DETECTED.
When “auto” for headlights the lights won’t turn on at night time unless I manually switch it or the lifts will be on and then go off on their own during the night.
Loosing oil which will result in engine failure. Had an oil test done at the Kia Dealership and they said it lost 2.5 quarts of oil in 2925 miles and that is "operating as designed". Their Owner's manual says change the oil every 7500 miles. So by then I will be out of oil. Not sure how this is "operating as designed".
While in Auto mode, lights turn off and on during the day and night. Happens daily.
Passenger seat belt not on warning no longer works when car is running or not running. Passenger can forget to put on seatbelt and no reminder chime. Problem is continuous. No warning lamps. Has been inspected but not repaired. Headlights come on and go off intermittently. Headlights come on when vehicle is off and not running Draining the battery down. Hard to duplicate. Has not been duplicated or repaired as it's intermittent without warning.
Within the last 6 months the EPB Electronic Parking Brake system engages and will not disengage leaving me stranded 3 separate occassions having to be towed to the dealership twice. Now, the KIA dealer tells me the system needs to be replaced. The dealer originally acknowledged issues with this system and that there is no fix, or recall, at this time. Such a basic function should work on this vehicle without incident and certainly should not fail under 100,000 miles. It is dangerous and can put families at risk when the vehicle locks up and will not move from its spot. Replacement of this sytem is expensive and unreasonable. There are numerous reports that can be found online.
The oil burns very fast. I check the oil weekly and it's always low. There were no warning lamps or lights or anything to indicate that the oil was low.
My vehicle has been consuming massive amounts of oil. My oil is completely OUT at around 2500 miles after a fresh oil change. There are no leaks or puddles on my garage floor and no warning indication on the dashboard. I became aware of the problem only after my mechanic did courtesy inspections after taking my car in to have tires replaced, headlight bulbs replaced, routine maintenance. This is unacceptable and can lead to significant engine problems and/or fire!
The oil light came on and started blinking. I checked the oil and it was full. I then called the Kia dealer and told them what was going on and the said it was a sensor. I needed to make appointment to get a new sensor but they had none and they were on back order. They would call me when it came in. I started seeing oil in garage under my car. I called The kia dealership back and they said just keep adding oil to it. 4 weeks after initial call the part came in. I took my car in to be fixed but it was more extensive than they were assuming. They had to order more parts and it took 2 more weeks. It turned out to be the Oil pressure switch that was leaking and spewing oil all over the engine. Could have been a disastrous situation. It cost me 1750.00. The car has 84,000 miles on it has been well taken care of and they didn’t cover it under any warranty.
High oil consumption. I'm burning 2 quarts of oil every 1000 miles.
I left my home in Northern California and drove my 2017 KIA Sorento EX V6 AWD to work. No one was with me in the vehicle. There seemed to be a rattling sound in the engine when I started and drove the vehicle. There was no illuminated light on the dashboard to indicate a specific issue. I was planning to drop off the vehicle at the KIA Service Center-Roseville Automall after work. I just got off the freeway, when the Kia slowed down by itself. I was able to pull over to the right shoulder of the freeway and the KIA just completely stopped with faint sounds coming from the engine. I turned the car off. I stayed in the car and was about to call my auto insurance company when I smelled smoke. I stepped out, checked the Kia from outside, saw something dripping under the front of the car, and started to catch fire. I immediately stepped far from it and called 911. The fire got bigger and just burned the whole front. We had the KIA Sorento serviced in December 2021 for a leaky oil switch despite timely maintenance at the KIA Service Center through the years. The maintenance guy said we did not have to pay to resolve the leaky oil issue because of a recall warranty. We brought the KIA again for a regular maintenance service and brake pad repairs on 4/2/2022. Later on, we got a letter from the KIA Headquarters dated 4/7/2022 regarding 2014-2018 MY KIA Sorento 3.3 L Vehicle Oil Pressure Switch Leaking New Vehicle Limited Warranty Extension. Somewhere in the letter stated, “If oil is N
My husband and I were driving through a busy section of town and all of a sudden our suv completely lost power, dying on the side of the road. We never had a check engine light or anything come on. When we had it towed to the dealership we were informed our engine had locked up. Apparently there was a product upgrade that should have alerted us that our engine was going out, but we were not notified by Kia of the knock system upgrade. Nor were we informed that, as the second owners of the vehicle, in order to receive such notifications from Kia we needed to contact them and let them know we were the new owners and share our contact information. However, if Kia had classified it as a recall on the warning system, we would have been notified through our registration with the BMV. The dealership did share that this particular engine in a lot of Kia’s models have locked up suddenly similarly to ours. Luckily we were able to get our vehicle stopped right before the intersection, but did end up blocking a lane of traffic until the tow truck came. Kia also refuses to replace our engine because we did not get the knock system upgrade even though we were never notified.
I am requesting an investigation of a defect involving the oil pressure switch in my iKia Sorento vehicle engine. The oil pressure switch, a device which monitors engine oil pressure and illuminates a warning light when oil pressure is lost, is defective The defect results in an engine oil leak. The oil loss occurs without warning to the driver eventually leading to an engine stall and loss of motive power condition. This was brought to the attention of the technician that serviced my car several times. I was instructed to add some oil if I noticed it, but don’t fill it up. I was informed to let them take care of the liquid levels when I brought it in for the oil changes.
When steering the vehicle at speeds between 40 and 70 mph the steering will feel sticky or get a notch feel to it. When making minor adjustments to the wheel to keep the vehicle going straight there will be resistance, then when enough force has been applied it will move. This sudden movement of the wheel causes the vehicle to over steer on the direction the steering wheel was being moved. This can result in an overcompensation the other direction. Although these are small movements the driving experience is unsettling for the driver, and for others around. The dealership is aware of the issue, confirmed it, and applied a software fix to the vehicle per KIA TSB 060 Rev 5. This has made the issue intermittent at best, instead of correcting it. Upon my second visit the dealership they reset the vehicle computer and I believe applied the software again. Upon testing they could not recreate the issue. On the third visit they were not able to recreate the issue yet again. After every visit I could feel the vehicle exhibiting the problem on the drive home - it's is a 2.5 hour drive to the dealership. The vehicle currently has less than 20K and this issue has been occurring since about 8K miles on the odometer. There has been no indicators or trouble codes, only the driving experience. The first occurrence was during the winter and more pronounced. The sticky feeling and the way that affected my steering on icy roads was somewhat scary. KIA's TSB states if the vehicle fails the reco
Car oil had not been changed but a month or two ago and only went on one 2-3 hour trip there and back after the oil was changed. Only stayed in town and went to regular grocery store and work after trip. Did not check oil due to not normally having it deplete fast. A month or so later oil deplited rapidly (this is an unknown part if it was fully the cars issue or if was the person who changed the oil.) Oil was lower than normal mainly noticed when car showed oil lamp light (was only blinking did not stay lit) and started halting and jerking when driving home. More oil was added and once that happened the check engine light came on. Car has jerked and been close to stalling when trying to drive to autostore for diagnostics. Since then the car is acting like it did not have oil added. Oil light is off but engine light blinks constantly. The halting and stalling is similar to the recall on other 2017 Kia Sorento's (with a 3.3 L engine) with the crankshaft being the problem. The halting and stalling can lead to an accident. No prior engine issues before this when the oil ran low.
My car is burning excessive oil. Recently had an oil change on May 9,2022. Oil light came on May 27,2022. There was literally no oil in the car. The remaining mileage that should have been left is 751 til the 3000 miles oil change. Prior to May 9th I had the oil changed early April.
Excessive oil consumption with no low oil warning light. Driving with no oil can cause severe engine damage. I was informed by the Kia dealership after reporting an issue with oil consumption. Issue started in March 2022, diagnosed in april 2022 and 1 month of driving had no oil and no low oil warning light come on after oil change.
The contact owned a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 35-45 MPH on the highway that suddenly there was smoke and flames coming from underneath the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The fire department came to extinguish the fire. The police department was present and filed a report. There were no injuries. There were no other vehicles involved. The vehicle was towed and the vehicle was deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000
Paint is peeling on hood
Car lights come on when the car is not in use. Car sporadically does not start. New battery installed in February and car wont start in May.
Sunroof portion of moonroof exploded while driving on the freeway. We heard a sonic boom inside our car and the sunroof window shattered glass up and outward spraying glass out onto the freeway and into the fabric ceiling liner.
I reported earlier that my steering became "sticky" at highway speeds. Now, the problem is occurring at lower speeds. Today it began at 35 mph. Was just driving down the country road from my house and the steering started to stick.
I have a had issues with my check engine light flashing and when that occurs. The car begins to drive slow and does a jerking motion when pressing the gas pedal. I called Kia Galenea and informed them of the problem with my vehicle. They took the car and said it that the vehicle needed a updated on the knock sensor. So they did the updated not even a week later the engine check light comes back on again. I called Kia dealership and told them again what had happened. The same code P1326 appeared again and the check engine light is flashing. They took the car back and said it was a oil pressure switch that needed to be fixed. I paid them for that and they said we fixed it. I left the dealership with my vehicle and not even 20 minutes the check engine light came back on. This time my car began to stall like it could hardly go 50 on the interstate. I told the dealership and they said it’s nothing we can do, so I had told them it’s still showing the P1326 popping up and the car is even worse now. So I filed a complaint with Kia Consumer after that incident and I have yet to hear back from anyone yet. During this difficult time I have been struggling to get to work when they basically refuse to put me in a rental. I was put in a rental for less than 24 hours when they called me that morning saying they had fixed the problem when I’m certain they didn’t because the check engine light began to flash as soon as I got on the interstate. I had to pull over because I didn’t want anyone t
Kia can not describe what exactly is wrong with my vehicle. First they said it was the rod bearing then they took it back because if it was the rod bearing system then Kia would have to fix the engine then they said it’s my spark plugs now here we are 4 weeks later they’re saying it’s the compression system in relation to the spark plugs. And this was the same person i spoke to literally 4 weeks Ago. So at this point I’m like make up your mind which one is it? I told them I’m a single parent with a disabled child with no transportation and have been without for 4 weeks. I even had to come up with a rental out of pocket with no reimbursement or loaner from Kia when asked m, i spent $2,000 that Kia won’t reimburse me for. The incident occurred in march 27,2022 while driving on the highway at 70mph as i was accelerating my engine began to shake and engine light came on and vehicle began to shake violently and completely went out. I nearly got into a 3 pile car accident due to this incident. The dealer refuses to acknowledge any ownership and completely rests the blame on me. I have told them and called Kia consumer that i can not afford to pay $7,000 for a recalled engine and im highly upset. No prior warning lights came on prior to this event i submitted all prior maintenance paperwork to my insurance adjuster for proof that the vehicle was regularity was maintained i also did the KSDS update that they recommended that i get done back on 10/2021 and this still issue still happe
At highway speeds, the steering appears to "stick." Think of it as as a flat spot on a wheel. That's what it feels like. The higher the speed, the more it sticks. Using cruise control makes it worse. This sticking causes overcorrection. Had a bit of an issue going through a construction zone over the Nueces River in Corpus Christi, TX. I have researched this issue, and you do have complaints. I am scheduling service for the car next week. I do have a notice from Kia on steering issues. A type of extended warranty for steering. The "sticky steering" issue has no warning lights/lamps.
The steering wheel sticks, which causes over correction.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving approximately 20-25 MPH, the vehicle stalled inadvertently. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer sent a diagnostic report to the manufacturer. The manufacturer declined to cover the repair of the vehicle as the contact had failed to complete a knock sensor software update under a product improvement campaign; however, the contact stated that she had not received a notification regarding the product improvement. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000.
4/18/22 While making a right turn in a residential neighborhood, the car abruptly stopped and engine shut down. The stop was so abrupt that it threw my body forward and now have shoulder and neck pains. No warning lights were illuminated prior to this incident, however, after the engine shut down, the airbag light was lit. I drove it home slowly, called the Kia dealership in Manteca, CA. Making arrangements to have the vehicle towed and have it examined. Two days prior, the ! light came on. I noticed that the passenger side headlight was out. That same evening when I started the vehicle up, the ! light was gone and the headlight worked. I addition, when having the light control kept on Auto, the headlights remain on all the time. If this had happened in traffic or on the freeway, it may have had a different outcome.
While driving the steering wheel gets stuck in the direction you turned it. This is especially true when steering in a curve. I have to constantly make minor adjustments while negotiating a curve. I have to constantly pull cw and ccw because it sticks after each adjustment. I ask the dealer to look at it during an oil change and the attendant told me they didn't have enough service people because of COVID. I called several months later and the service person said it has motorized steering assist and that is the way it is. If you are going around a curve close to the center line it would be very easy for the power assist steering to make you cross into oncoming traffic I noticed it after buying the car and kept putting off having it looked at. I've had heart surgery and covid came along with lock-downs and I've just neglected to have the problem resolved. I've searched for similar reports and problems and there are many more owners with the exact same problem. KIA should have a recall to remedy the situation before someone is killed.
The vehicle has stalled multiple times while in motion presenting a life safety concern, the vehicle is under warranty and has been at the dealer multiple times and they are unable to duplicate and refuse to do any further diagnoses beside scan for active codes which the vehicle does not have. Vehicle currently will not start and has left us stranded in an area where we are concerned for our safety.
Rear left passenger window drum defective. Window has been used maybe 20 times in 5 years. Window will not raise or lower and fails to stay closed. Appears to be window Drum Pulley. From internet chatter, this is happening often. This vehicle has low mileage we purchased it new and we are in our 70’s. Took it to my dealer for repair. My dealer service rep. say’s they get about two vehicles a week with this issue.
I purchased a new 2017 Kia Sorento LX AWD and have been having an issue with the steering for a few years. When attempting to keep the car traveling straight at highway speeds, there is a need to force the wheel. This results in overcompensation in steering and can be dangerous. I have seen this issue described as Notchy and Sticky steering. Initially in an effort to correct the problem I had the tires rotated and an alignment done however this did not make a difference. The issue seems to only occur if driving 50 MPH or higher and traveling in a straight direction.
High pressure fuel pump leaking gas into oil. University Kia of Durham NC says it will cost me $1250.00 to repair this issue. My car has 60,905 miles on it. I see recalls on this issue? I have not had the repair done yet.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the ABS warning light and other unknown warning lights illuminated. Additionally, the contact noticed that the exterior of the driver's side mirror housing had melted. The contact stated that shortly after she could no longer lock or unlock the doors of the vehicle using the driver's side power door lock switch and the key fob. The contact was also unable to roll down the windows using the window switches. The contact stated that the instrument cluster had also failed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that an electrical fire had occurred in the driver's side mirror housing. The independent mechanic disconnected the electrical wiring system of the driver's side mirror housing. The contact stated that she could no longer adjust the driver's side mirror as needed and it could no longer turn in when the vehicle was parked. The contact stated that she was still experiencing electrical failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 97,000.
Upon driving in the highway at the speed limit of of 75mph my Kia Sorento began to lose control and lose speed when i tried to gain more speed . It was very frightening and i ultimately feared for my life especially when the whole car began to shake violently. Based on the diagnostic report it is the engine control system and yes i agree to have my vehicle inspected because this is highly unacceptable from Kia! I literally just gave Kia my car back in 10/2021 for them to update the engine software and now this! And when i call to make an appointment to get the problem fixed I’m being told i can’t get a loaner car i would be paying a rental car out of pocket for 6 month! I am a single parent of a disable child and Kia thinks that’s ok? My safety was highly put at risk! I could’ve swerved and panicked and hit other cars had i not had gained complete control over my car. There has been no other prior engine light system failures but prior notices in the mail about a prior recall in my car then also i had to pay $252 to get my car towed because i was beyond my insurances mileage
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento.. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked it suddenly caught on fire. The fire department was called and put out the fire. A fire report was made. There were no injuries and no medical attention was needed. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel seized upon depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The contact stated that the failure did not occur while turning the steering wheel but rather while driving straight. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer on three separate occasions and was recently informed that the failure was normal vehicle operation. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 59,000. The VIN was not available.
Engine ceased in Dec ..was repaired and today engine ceased again. I believe they repaired it with a bad engine. Im currently stuck on side of road with my children. I pulled over off the highway in enough time. My engine was just replaced by Kia in Dec 21. There is no way this should be happening I purchased through Greenway Kia in Franklin, TN in I took the car back for the bumper/ SC201 recall and since then have had nothing but issues. I have established the below timeline as the basis of my complaint and frustration. Last year I tried to get a manager to call me back for months and no one called. 5/18/21- Returned car for the SC201 Aux Canister Installation recall 6/11/21-Less than a month later my engine light came on and I noticed issue with my oil having to be topped off often. After a week or so in the shop and denied claims. I was told at this point that there was a canister issue unrelated to the recall. This made no sense to me since the engine light did not come on until after the recall work was done 11/16/2021- Car engine ceased and stop as I was heading to work. I had not yet reached 65 busy hwy. If I had I might have been in an accident. The car remained in the shop for almost a month. During this time, I had to catch rides to work and continue to pay a 549.00 per month car payment. I eventually rec’d a 10 day rental through the warranty. I received the car back in Dec 2020. Jan 2021- now- Notice a burning engine smell and call Kia who stated that it was the
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power steering assist intermittently. The vehicle was still drivable during the failure. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering assist and seized without warning. The contact was able to safely guide the vehicle off the roadway. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that there was a mechanical defect in the steering assembly and had to be addressed by a dealer. The contact drove the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the battery and a faulty ball joint replaced. The dealer stated that the failure was not due to the steering. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
I purchased my vehicle from Carvana in 2020. It was registered and I received my tag promptly. Last week I was turning and gaining speed and I lost all engine power. Battery light came on and steering locked up as well as brakes almost causing an accident. I noticed Kia and I paid to tow it to the location. They then notified me that because I had active recalls the vehicle was no longer under warranty and I would be responsible for the cost of the engine replacement. I have no car to get back and forth to work with and am about to lose my job. I bought a Kia FOR the warranty and have received ZERO notifications of recalls and was not told when Carvana sold me the car. I have no idea what to do but it was made clear that the recalls not behind fixed is what has destroyed my ENTIRE ENGINE. I need my car added to the recall list. I need a new engine on my NEW car before I lose everything
While driving the car slows down without me slowing down on the breaks. Car wants to shut down & is vibrating. Car doesn't want to drive past 2000 rpm. I take it to mechanic, he can't find the code. I take to mechanic a 2nd time. I get codes p1326 & p2600. No recalls are found for Sorento but other models there is plenty.
The electronic steering "sticks" and makes it necessary to force the steering wheel to make driving corrections. This in turns causes an oversteer situation and a safety issue. The vehicle is difficult to keep lane control. New tires, alignment, and a TSB software upgrade by Kia service did nothing to correct the problem. Kia determined (15 Feb 2022) the vehicle needed the electronic steering column replaced. The Kia service rep stated my factory and extented warranty will not cover the cost of repairs. The problem has been intermittent for over 2 years and getting worse. My research indicates many owners having the same issue with this vehicle.
Recently the oil pressure sensor indicator light has been coming dure to excessive oil consumption. Oil light also comes on when idling, even though engine oil level is full. Slight increase of RPM causes light to go out, but may come back on occasionally when idling again. PVC valve has been replaced with a new one, problem continues. Seen many more of the same complaints on this and other websites. Appears to be a manufacturing defect or faulty oil pressure sender based on reported information. A Kia Sorento oil pressure switch recall is allegedly necessary based on a petition sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency says the petition seeks a Kia Sorento oil pressure switch recall because 2015-2017 Sorentos are at risk of complete engine failures.
While driving at highway speeds steering is sticky or notching when trying to direct car in a curve, lane change in a right or left direction. Takes excessive pressure to get steering to move in any direction. Brought to dealer while under warranty, dealer said they could not replicate problem. safety issue causes you to over correct to get steering wheel to move.
The steering seems to stick or click at various speeds.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
