1.Engine is consuming 2-3 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles. Kia consumer services instructed me to pay for an oil diagnostic test- of 4 visits every 1,000 miles- cost of oil changes, engine flush, rental car for 2 days= $800 to date. 2. I am a therapist and travel Ohio for insurance purposes. My vehicle is a converted handicapped accessible vehicle as my significant other had multiple sclerosis, and the purpose of purchasing the car 4 years ago. 3. Yes, the service dept of a local dealer has confirmed the issue. They state that Kia refuses to do anything to resolve the issue of oil running out, engine seizing to work, driver will be killed driving when engine stops and is run into by semi-truck on highway. 4. No warnings. I literally ran out of oil 2 times before I knew it is a problem. The problem started in August of 2022. Under 96,000 miles. Now 102,000. Kia states that due to me being the 2nd owner (purchased at 23,000 miles) that they will not warranty the car at 100,000 as I was let to believe when I purchased it from Freedom Motors in BattleCreek Michigan.
2017 Kia Sorento complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2017 record →
My motor was beginning to make a knocking sound yesterday and I felt unsafe driving it so I parked it
My car has repeatedly completely run out of oil after going 2500 of 5000 miles and the oil leaked into different parts of the car. The car is not drivable and shakes and the engine rattles. None of the dashboard indicators illuminated to indicate an issue, until after the car shut off as I placed it in drive and was trying to accelerate, on 9/24/22. I have only owned the car since 10/2021. This car’s repairs should be covered under NHTSA Recall #20V750.
Intermittently, while driving, day or night, the headlights will turn on or off for about 30 seconds despite the called for sensor setting. For example, if it is dark outside, the sensors will trigger to turn on the headlight and running lights and vise a versa, when the sensors detect sufficient light, the running and headlights will turn off. I have only noticed this happens when the headlights are in the "auto" mode position as I don't keep them any other way. I have only noticed it a couple times when the headlights and/or running lights will turn on during the day (bright enough not to trigger the sensor). HOWEVER, it has happened A LOT at night where the lights will turn OFF WHILE DRIVING which causes panic because I'm driving a death machine blindly (nothing bright to mistakenly trigger sensor/no overhead lighting or approaching vehicles, i.e. pitch black). I have not been able to recreate it on demand and it has an unknown, unbiased pattern. I would say that it occurs weekly, up to 2 times per week. I feel that it has happened more often a few seconds after straightening from a turn using the turning signal (but I always use my turning signal). The direction of turn doesn't factor, it'll do it turning left or right. There has been a couple times where I almost have driven off the road and/or hit unseen objects because of having no lights. This has happened enough at night when the lights unwantedly turn off, that I have learned to quickly switch the lights from "auto"
2017 Kia Sorrento burns excessive amounts of oil between oil changes, more than 4 quarts. Eyebrow and rear parking lights come on their own, even after the car has been off for several hours without touching Kia or keys.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to pull over on the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed by an authorized dealer. The failure mileage was 102,000.
"Oil pressure light" appears while starting and driving vehicle, oil maintains in vehicle no drop in oil level. KIA dealership is aware of issue and has not informed consumers before purchase that a flush of the engine, is a "potential" fix for issue, KIA dealership is unsure that issue will be resolved, on low mileage vehicle.
The car started leaking oil. Took the car in for inspection at local Kia dealership. The component that failed was the "oil pressure switch". This leak put my engine at risk of not working and fire. There was no warning lamp, engine oil was low. There is a NHTSA notice for this same issue sent out for Kia Sorento 3.3L GDI engines.
While I was driving on the interstate my head lights and dashboard lights went out. My lights were in auto mode. The next morning my park lights were on with the light switch in auto mode.
When the headlights are on "auto", they shut off at night while I'm driving. This has happened when I have been traveling out of state on dark highways and it is very dangerous. It is available to be inspected. I have not taken it in to get checked. I have not been able to use the "auto" feature because I do not want to take that kind of risk.
The auto lights turn off randomly during night operation
Rear Differential Coupling Assembly leak, to where it needs to be replaced. Loud noises coming from the back of the vehicle, especially during braking. Brakes still have 5 and 7 mm remaining.
Paint delamination on hood.
On 3 different occasions, my headlights have gone out during driving at night. My switch is always set to auto. I have noticed at times during the day they will shut off as well. Shutting off during night driving is very dangerous as i'm not always in areas that are lighted. On a few occasions my eyebrows and tail lights have randomly come on when my car is off during the night. These issues are happening without warning.
While driving at night down an unlit roadway, the headlights turned off. I was the passenger and my wife the driver. She touched the light control arm and they came back on. She said this has happened about 5 times, all at night. It takes about 3-5 seconds to get the lights to come back on. We were on a back country road driving about 55 mph which means we drove anywhere from 240 feet to 400 feet down the highway in the dark. This is a safety concern. I have also discovered some of the vehicle's lights come on at random while parked in the garage. I have also discovered the battery dead on 3 occasions. I assume these issues are related.
2017 kia Sorento has been burning oil like crazy. It is going through at least 3 quarts of oil every week to 2 weeks. The oil light does not come on to say it is low on oil, I have to continually check oil level manually to see if I need to add oil. Check engine light comes on and goes back out constantly. Biggest problem is there is no indication that the oil is getting low.
We were driving on a highway that was currently under construction. I had called my mechanic to get the vehicle in to get it plugged in to see why the service engine light came on that morning. While driving it, the vehicle stalled out on the now one lane highway. Stalled to the point of not being able to move or restart. There was no other sounds, smoke, anything! It. Just. Stopped. The semi behind us took out three construction barrels when he swerved to miss hitting the back of the vehicle! After seeing our lives flash before our eyes, we had to have some of the construction workers help us push it out of the way of any other traffic. It was towed to our mechanic who told us that there were metal shavings in oil and that intake and exhaust cams are two degrees off. They would not repair this type of engine issue, so we had it towed to our local Kia dealer/service center. There they have diagnosed the vehicle having catastrophic engine failure. Not covered under warrantee and we are required to pay for new engine.
I have to refill my oil with 5 quarts every 2k miles like clockwork between periodic oil changes. Oil light comes on taking left turns and slowing down to a stop. Dealership said nothing about the issues associated with this car.
My engine is consume too much oil. On 2 occasions when taking car for oil change I was told no oil in my engine. I had to put 3 quarts of oil in between oil change around 900 miles. My engine light flickers on and off but last time no warning given. I am concerned that this may cause engine fire. Noticed the issue at approx 98000 miles. I drive on highway for 45 mins to go to work and afraid I will consume all the oil in my engine and cause an accident or cause a fire. I go through a tunnel and it cause a lot of anxiety knowing my car is consuming too much oil. I called Kia dealership and they told me I have to wait till November for car to get service. I am trying to avoid the run around since I am at 103000 miles since warranty ended at 100000. I purchased car brand new. Thank you
Headlights were in auto mode and twice have shut off when it was completely dark at around 0600 on 9/22 and 9/26. Dashboard and all exterior lights went out. I had turn them to the on position for see. In both cases the vehicle was stopped at a stop sign and it happen just as was pulling out.
The headlights spontaneously shut off while driving at night. This has happened multiple times since we have owned the car. Mostly happens when lights are in AUTO mode. Also the headlights will turn on while parked and shut off.
There is an electrical problem with the Kia Sorento. I had the battery and Alternator replaced when the vehicle shut down and locked up on me. This is the second time in a few months it just shut down while I was driving.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, his wife noticed an abnormal sound coming from the engine. Additionally, his wife also noticed that the vehicle was not accelerating as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the high-pressure fuel pump follower was replaced; however, immediately there was a knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the knocking noise was coming from the engine and might be the rod bearing. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were contacted and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was 70,000.
Vehicle has 64000 miles, I was driving at 70 mph on highway with no warning the engine cut out lost power, engine light was now on. Had it towed to Kia dealership was told engine failure is a problem with this vehicle as well as excessive burning oil and I had to pay $500 to have engine cleansed, told it would not fix the problem but engine cleanse was the recommended step. Told to drive car for 1000 miles bring it back to have oil checked then I am to drive it, not to check the oil or add oil and drive it until the engine goes out again then have it towed back to the dealership. Didn’t even make it to 1000 miles check engine light came on, now being told it is the intake manifold that needs replaced not covered under warranty and this will cost me $1000 and still refuse to replace the problematic engine. Asked technician if the lower engine issues could cause damage to other parts of my engine not covered by lifetime warranty for lower engine to which I was told he didn’t think so but couldn’t say for sure. Contacted Kia customer center received an apathetic response to my concerns and merely offered to mail me a hard copy of the details of the warranty told not sure why the technician told me not to check or add oil as that would be owner negligence and engine would then not be covered by lifetime warranty. Kia is consciously putting my family at risk by refusing to resolve the clear problem with this engine. Their actions are negligent. They willingly took my money for a v
While headlight switch is in Auto mode, it will frequently turn off the headlights at night while indicating that I changed the headlight mode even though I haven't touched it. This happens on dark rural roads with no other vehicles around so oncoming headlights isn't the issue. This happens multiple times a week and I am forced to quickly turn the headlights manually to the "always on" position before I crash into something. I am quick, but it is dangerous and scares my wife to death. Searching online forums shows this to be an extremely common problem. This happens all of the time so there is not one specific date to select. It has been happening multiple times a week for about a year now. Kia pretends they haven't heard of this issue before but any simple search online will show they are lying.
While on a road trip down south, at my first gas stop, the vehicle's gear shift was stuck in park and refused to move. After removing the small cap cover marked Shift Lock Release, I manually inserted a screwdriver into the hole and was able to release the shifter. This has been the only way to release the gear shifter from Saturday, 09/10/2022 until present time. I have an appointment for service with Premier Kia dealership in Branford CT.
My 2017 Kia Sorento, While driving (at night) the head lights will shut off in auto mode. turn the switch off and back on lights come ON, SAFETY TO ME AND OTHERS WHEN YOUR HEAD LIGHTS GO OUT ON A DARK ROAD
Engine was burning oil very quickly. We were filling it with oil between oil changes which we always got on schedule. With any problems or warning from check engine light it shut down in the middle of the highway. Our mechanic checked it and said the engine it locked. I’ve only had it for 10 months and it only has 106k miles.
While in Auto Lights mode, the headlights will randomly turn off while driving. Also, while in auto mode, while the car is parked the lights will randomly turn on- causing the battery to die within a few days of the car not being used. It appears to be the Auto lights mode that causes the problem. This is extremely dangerous to this car and other cars on the road, for obvious reasons. Issue has been noted to Kia dealer 2-3 times over the last 2 years. They are not able to replicate the issue. No errors in the computer.
On Friday September 2nd 2022, the oil light on my 2017 Kia Sorento came on for a brief moment then quickly went off. Once I arrived at my destination, I checked my oil & found there to be little to no oil in the vehicle. I had to add several quarts of oil to the vehicle to even get a reading on the dip stick. The vehicle has had regular oil changes & there has been no indication of an issue with the oil prior to this. Upon further inspection there is a large amount of carbon buildup on the tailpipe indicating the vehicle is burning oil. I have left several messages with the service center at the Kia dealership where the vehicle was purchased & all service was completed to advise of the issue/bring the vehicle in, but have received no call back to date. I have also reached out to Kia corporate regarding the issue with no response.
Headlight Switch is faulty when in Auto. Lights shut off randomly while driving at night and when your car is parked and turned off all the lights will come on and drain your battery. I have had the lights shut off on me a dozen times roughly and had to replace a $300 battery because of the lights turning on and draining it. I have been stuck in bad situations with the battery dead and driving down dark roads at night when headlight failure occurs. I see hundreds of complaints from others online. I cannot understand how this safety hazard has not be addressed or corrected by KIA.
Headlights go off without warning while in auto driving at night . Has occurred 2 in the month of August 2022. Can be turned back on by twisting the control nob to on. Poses a dangerous situation on the dark county roads that we drive if not quick enough to manually turn back on.
The "auto" headlight function keeps malfunctioning. It will randomly shut off the headlights and not turn back on. Numerous forums have reported the issue. This is extremely dangerous when driving at night.
Multiple times when driving at night, all of the vehicle's exterior lights sudden turn off. We have been able to get the lights working again by turning the headlight switch on and off several times. Obviously, this is an extremely hazardous situation leaving us with no visibility in the dark and other vehicles cannot see us wither. We have not had this issue investigated by a dealership yet, but have found many accounts online of this occurring to others. There are no warning lights or any indications of a problem.
Oil consumption is horrible, also there is never a warning light that tells you that the oil is low, you’ll just be driving and then the check engine light will come on and the car with start driving funny. It’s a dangerous situation because at any time your car could be out of oil and your engine could blow cause if harm or death to everyone in the vehicle and could possibly cause an accident.
While driving with headlights in “Auto” switch mode, the lights turned off. This occurred during dark goes while driving in a dark area at around 55mph. Switching from “Auto” to “On” turned the headlights and tail lights back on. This seems to be a more common problem when I read about similar issues at https://sorentoforums.com/threads/lights-shutting-off-in-auto-mode.16/ Currently there is no recall for this safety issue.
I was picking up my daughter from school. I drove there a considerable distance. I parked because I got there early. Once it was time to get my daughter I put my car in reverse and it made a loud clanking sound and the wheel became hard to maneuver. As soon as it made the sound a steering wheel with an exclamation point red light came on. I looked it up on Google and found that there was a technical bulletin issued for my year car regarding the MDPS/EPS system extending the warranty to 15 years on 01/05/2022-01/07/2022. When I took my vehicle to Kia of Hollywood service center in Hollywood FL, they were able to reproduce the problem. However after looking at the bulletin and parts covered under that particular bulletin, they told me that the issue that is causing the noise was not covered by that technical bulletin for the MDPS warning light and the actual cause of the noise in my vehicle was my car needed a new rack and pinion. Once they told me the repair would not be covered by the extended warranty I asked for the price. Kia is selling the rack and pinion for $3280. The same part after market is $339. I of course took my vehicle to a different mechanic and did not pay the total cost of parts and labor that they quoted me which was $4460. I believe Kia is aware that this particular part is defective and are taking advantage of some sort of loop hole. Maybe not enough consumers knowing they can file complaints. There's a reason why they are selling this particular part 10 t
The 4 wheel drive coupling assembly is leaking oil covering the rear differential actuator motor. Kia TSB #086 November 2019 spells out the situation.
Engine failure at approx. 94755 miles. Motor lost compression in no.3 cylinder while on interstate. Car was inspected by dealer.KIA customer service car was not eligible for warranty repair. Car was under warranty limits. Purchased car new
My KIA has issues with the headlights -- they randomly go off as you drive down the street. I thought I was hitting something but last night I had both hands on the wheel -- and the lights went off going down a busy highway -- thankfully I was familiar with area and it was well lit. They were out 5-10 seconds and they came back on. This also happened to me travelling to Syracuse New York in the mountains which was very dark -- it was very scary and could have been very deadly. I was a bit shook up. I called KIA and they said they don't have enough complaints to do anything. Seriously -- someone could die.
The KIA turned off while driving in traffic going to Louisiana. It just turned off while I was slowing down. The vehicle turned back on a few minutes later and continued to Louisiana. The steering wheel locked up while in Baton Rouge, LA and the red warning light came on after that. There were no warning lights prior to the vehicle turning off while driving nor when the power steering locked up. I took it to O’Reilly’s Auto Parts to have them put some power steering fluid in it. They could not do it because apparently it has an electric power steering system. The car would not start after that. All the warning lights came on. The rep at O'Reilly's said that since it is electrical, I would need to take it to the dealership because I should not be having these issues since I only had the vehicle for almost 3 months. The codes that came on when the rep put the machine on were: battery, starter, alternator, power steering. The oil had been changed on Tuesday, 08.09.2022. I already had to buy 2 tires as the tire shop stated the inside of the tires were already going bald. Which should not be happening either. The vehicle was left in Baton Rouge, LA as it was not drivable to return to Houston, Texas. I am going to make arrangements with CARMAX to tow the vehicle to their location in Baton Rouge, LA. According to CARMAX, there were no known issues when the vehicle was purchased nor were there any recalls. If there were no known issues, why am I having these issues now?
My car burns oil, like at least a quart or 2 per week, so much so that I had my oil changed and the engine blew not even 2 months later.
Window regulator cables are failing. Talked to Auto glass repair shop he has had numerous KIA Sorento's in for failed regulator, he had one just in with only 1 window that worked. There is no stock available & as of right now they cannot even give an estimated delivery date on the ones due-in.
I think there is something wrong with engine I just changed oil with sythitic oil and drove it around at least 100miles and its done 3 quarts and there is no visuable leaks anywhere and also the radio does not work on any station
On June 15th, before our 2017 Sorento was due for an oil change, it completely ran out of oil and we were stranded on the side of the road. Our mechanic completely changed and filled the oil. I reached out to Kia Corporate twice, but they were of no assistance. Yesterday, on August 6th, the car was again low on oil. We have an appointment with Kia on Wednesday, August 10th to attempt to address this issue.
This engine in the vehicle has had excessive oil consumption between oil changes. It uses 3 quarts of oil between oil changes at every 3000 miles. Why even do an oil change if I’m putting 3 quarts in it every 3000 miles I could just swap filters and be done with it.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving approximately 75 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and started to decelerate. Additionally, the vehicle was shaking abnormally. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the roadway and park the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact restarted the vehicle after a while and drove to the nearest dealer for the vehicle to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,500.
The component that failed is the engine and yes it is available for inspection and has already been inspected by Geico insurance. The vehicle started losing power on a major highway and four adult lives were at risk when this occurred. We took an exit as the car was failing and it stopped completely in traffic on the exit ramp. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by Matthews Kia. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by Geico insurance. Yes, the vehicle suddenly began to shake, and made very loud noises, we then rapidly lost power and the car stopped dead in the middle of traffic.
All my oil keep leaving out of my engine I only had the car since March I got the dealer oil change in May and I had to add oil twice in July I also had a Kia Sorento Pryor to this one and had the same problem there is ovisiouly some wrong with those engines I have seen other people complain about the same thing with the same vehicle in a Google search on that problem
My headlights are randomly turning on and off while I drive. Also when the car is parked and off for hours, the headlights turn on by themselves.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
