I had no warning lights come on all of a sudden steam and anti freeze blew from outside hood luckily I was right near home pulled in popped hood all Xtra antifreeze gone from back up container .had triple A tow to a mechanic as thought it was a hole in radiator or hose fell off.He got back to me and said there are exhausted gases in antifreeze and my head gasket is blown !Nothing ever gave me a clue just happened. He suggested towing to kia as only 70.000 miles and he said there is a leak either from head gasket bolt .but somehow this is a reason for kia as he has read many complaints the same as mine.not the knock sensor issue this is a whole new problem with v6 engine .so I owe 15,000.00 for a car that does no longer run kia will do nothing as had towed to dealership.what do I do? I can not find anyone to do engine cause there are none there are no recalls on this issue!Kia needs to be held accountable for all there issues !As my car is still there cause have no idea what to do !so now still paying payments with no help from them!please look on kia complaint you will see so many others with same issue! https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/cars/news-blog/hyundai-and-kia-s-decade-of-very-troublesome-engines-continues-44497118
2016 Kia Sorento complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2016 record →
Was driving my car and the engine began to knock and then died. Looked at the oil and there was no oil on the dip stick. No warning light ever came on that the oil was low! Had to have it towed to a mechanic that said I now have to replace the engine!!!
Engine block threads stripped causing head gasket to blow. This vehicle has 108,000 miles and now needs a new engine. Very common issue.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V703000 (Trailer Hitches) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect. The contact has tried contacting the manufacturer several times but they claim that there isn't a solution to the problem. The contact also states that Uhaul could fix it with third-party harnesses and that Kia should be responsible for the cost of that repair.
Purchased vehicle April 2019 and properly maintained it with no major issues until September 2022 when the alternator went and was replaced with a new alternator but the car was no longer reliable at that point as it spent several trips to the shop (where it resides currently). The catalytic converter was throwing a code but the car was running okay so we were told to see what happens The smell of antifreeze was strong and the engine overheated despite our best efforts (from mechanics with various backgrounds and experience levels). We were told post diagnostic test days before Christmas that the engine block was “walking” and a new engine would be the only true and effective repair for it. In disbelief and penniless at this point we got a second and third opinion from other reputable mechanics. The last shop actually tore the engine apart and was able to confirm that the cylinders were so badly warped that a machine shop wouldn’t be able to make them usable. The mechanic commented about how awful the cylinders looked, and that putting the engine back together would be a complete waste of time because the engine would surely throw codes, it was just a matter of when. He also urged us to replace the engine. At this point we have reached out to the administrator for our gap optional warranty we purchased and despite the contract clearly stating there is ample engine coverage, he refuses to cover labor and/or parts. This was my first Kia and will without a doubt be my last. With
Car started to make a knocking noise especially when accelerating , however no lights on dash indicated anything was wrong. Car started fluttering and engine died. Started the car again, more knocking and fluttering before the engine died. Pulled over and checked oil. It was low so had someone bring me oil. Put in 3.5 quarts and got the car started again. The car was still making the knocking sound but was able to drive .5 mile to the closest mechanic. They said it is a serious engine problem from the sounds of it and instructed me not to drive it but to get it towed to the dealer.
More often than not I’m finding I have to add oil to the car. It gives no warning the oil is low, no light, no smoke. The car starts to run a little hard so we check the oil. Each time we check the oil is low and needs more. We have gotten oil changes on the recommended schedule. Yet the problem still persists. Also I notice at times when pushing the gas to accelerate it almost seems hard to do.
The vehicle had 87000 miles. On two occasions the engine overheated , requiring a tow. After the 1st incident a local mechanic ran tests and thought the radiator cap needed replacing. It ran fine until a few weeks driving up a mt. pass it overheated again, leaving me stranded on a two lane hwy in 20 degree temps with no cell service. Had it towed to Reno ,nv kia dealership they said it had blown a head gasket and then a few weeks later said the entire engine would have to be replaced ( the threads to the cylinder were stripped). The original mechanic and lia dealership are the only ones to have looked at or inspected the vehicle. As soon as I noticed the temperature gauge at an elevated level, I immediately pulled over and turned off the motor.
Car started to make a knocking noise, however no lights on dash indicated anything was wrong. Checked oil and the oil was low, had to add 4 quarts of oil, checked for leaks and nothing was leaking. Two weeks later noticed the car was driving a little different, checked oil and had to add two more quarts of oil.

The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that the exterior lights failed to operate as needed. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the headlamps and brake light bulbs had been changed approximately 2 - 3 times per year. Additionally, the horn failed to sound off while being depressed. The contact stated that the oil pressure warning light failed to illuminate to notify the contact that the oil level was low. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was jump started. The vehicle was started and there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that there was no oil in the engine. The mechanic performed an oil change on the vehicle. The cause of the failure with the exterior lighting was not yet determined. The contact stated that the bulbs were replaced at Walmart. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.
My engine failed while driving at 65 mph. There were no warning signs: no check engine light, no low oil pressure, and the temperature gauge prior to failure looked normal. My car had been well-maintained with regular oil changes within the recommended intervals with synthetic oil. The engine failed at approximately 103k miles; there were no known issues prior to failure.
My steering becomes "sticky" at highway speeds. It causes you to constantly correct your steering. This started as a subtle thing. Gradually I noticed it is more and more difficult to keep my vehicle between the lines and it feels dangerous. Now, the problem is also occurring at lower speeds. In February 2022, I took it to the KIA dealer and had them check it out. They said everything was normal and the alignment checked out OK. I think there should be a recall for this issue. 2016 Sorento EX AWD, Current mileage is 61,000. Problem first noticed at 40,000 miles.
Twice now my 2016 Kia GDI has had the same problem as many others. I had my oil changes made and they said there was no oil in the car. the oil light never came on. I am afraid to drive my car. Has there been a recall on this. or for a engine recall. My car is under warranty. Is
The transmission of the 2016 Kia Sorento is now disabled. The car is currently undergoing repair at a Kia Dealership and Service Center. Kia has inspected the vehicle, and it has been determined that the engine needs replacing. Leading up to the engine failing, there were no signs of a repair needed. No check engine lights, oil light, etc. Nothing. The car seemed to be running just fine. Driving on the highway going about 65mph, the car began to shake violently and eventually slowed down. Only at that point did the oil and check engine light appear.
This is the 2nd time. First time back in May 2022. Engine quite , no oil showing on stick while on the interstate. Had a mechanic look at it, usable to gind an oil leak, and replaced the fuel injection system. Told to only use mid grade which I have. Then my 2016 Kia Sorento's engine just quit again while driving down the interstate. With no warnings light or notification alerts the vehicle started loosing power, a loud clicking noise in the engine then it just stopped, cut off. I was able to roll off a ramp to stop. Checked the oil with nothing showing on the stick and had recently just had oil changed with 5 quarts put in.
My vehicle broke down on 12/23/2022, it seemed engine failure. It happened while I was arriving to my job in the evening. I parked my car on parking lot and did not move it. Due to Christmas holiday, I was unable to tow the vehicle to my closest KIA Dealership (Owings Mills, MD) until 12/27/2022. Once my vehicle was towed, the KIA Dealership informed me that my vehicle had a total of four (4) Recalls, but one of the recalls expired. I informed the KIA Dealership that I never received Recall Notifications from any KIA department regarding my vehicle. Kia Dealership referred me to contact KIA Corporation at 1-800-333-4542, because they were not able to assist me with any vehicle repairs and it seemed this was an engine issue related to a recall. On 12/27/2022, with the help of a family member I contacted KIA Corp. and confirmed they did not have my personal information on their records in relation to my vehicle. I was advised they only had information about my vehicle's prior owner. I provided all my information: name, address, phone number, email address. I inquired about the recall notification issue and they stated it was my responsibility to look for recalls on my vehicle. However, KIA Corp. acknowledged they sent notices to prior owner on 12/7/2018 and 6/12/2019. I have escalated this matter to KIA Corp and received no help. They failed to send me recall notices, and as I understand is their responsibility to confirm ownership information through MVA and to send recalls to
Car started to overheat, high temp alert, heater would not warm. Repair shop did high pressure test for head gasket leak, no problems found- Car continues to use Antifreeze (no drips found on cardboard placed under car in garage), car runs well, but a/c, heater do not perform well. spending time at money at repair shop, no answers-
Paint peeling in large flakes from front hood area of vehicle. Dealer documented paint issue on Jan 2, 2023
While on a road trip my car started making a clicking sound when I would push the gas pedal to accelerate and the check engine light came on. I was going to have it checked out when I got to my destination as I was driving with my two children. As we neared our location, and I was driving up a hill, when I pressed the gas it would not accelerate. I was able to get it to an auto repair shop. They diagnosed it with needing new spark plugs and coils. I agreed to the repairs. When the mechanic when to start the work, he noticed that the engine was in bad shape and that he recommended it be towed to a dealership as there have been multiple issues with Kias and having engine issues. I had it towed and opened a case with Kia. I learned about the class action lawsuit. In reading the lawsuit, I have done all necessary work to maintain the vehicle, including updating the software required. I was informed today that the engine is not covered under the lawsuit due to the part of the engine, even though it is in the same area as the covered areas. My car was not safe to drive due to it having a faulty engine. My car was serviced for leaking oil in September of 2022 at a dealership, and they never informed me that there was any concern with the engine or issues. My car could have broken down or shut off while driving in the mountains leaving my children and I stranded. Kia has done nothing to resolve this issue, even though they know they are aware that these cars have engines that catch f
I was merging into traffic on the expressway and when i stepped on the gas the vehicle wouldnt accelerate and died on me, i was able to coast to the side of the expressway, the vehicle sputtered when i attemted to restart, and when i put in drive it died. once it was towed home, i was able to start it and back it up to the garage like 3 feet. but it was sputtering and shaking. this vehicle was purchased used, and the dealership replaced the headgasket approximately 3 months ago. i purchased it 4 months ago. now i'm having problems again and don't know how i'm going to fix this on going problem.
We have to constant add oil to the engine in between our 3000 mile oil changes, at least a quart or more. There are no oil leaks anywhere on the engine. The engine makes a loud "ticking" noise and doesn't have the power. The transmission also has issues shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. We have even noticed from time to time a smell of gasoline from what seems to be coming from under the vehicle, but no signs of it leaking anywhere. Also the gas pedal doesn't always have the same "feel" when pushing it
I have a 2016 Kia Sorento with Pearl White Paint. My paint started chipping/pilling off. I would really call it pilling because it comes off while going down the road. It’s start with a small spot on the driver side with part that goes up the windshield. At first we thought it was from a rock but later that day more paint was missing. I just noticed that now a huge section on my roof right above the windshield is now doing the same thing. The spots are growing rapidly and more of them are happening.
October 19,2022 I was driving (cruise control about 70 mph) and hit a deer. The impact and damage was quite a bit however no airbags deployed. The car is still being repaired at Blakely Chevrolet in Blakely GA and they are having issues with airbag sensors.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle loss motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? A tow hatch could catch on fire when driving which is terribly dangerous and saying it could cause fire while being parked as well. How do you expect people to keep driving and be stressed about being burned? How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Me and my family and I have been put at risk by letting us know that when driving our vehicle a fire can start anytime and we have to park away from all other cars outside. We live in a community where kids are playing outside all the time so if a fire does start not only are we putting ourselves in danger when driving the car but other people live if the car goes into flames. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I have contacted a Kia dealer where I live and nobody has reached back out to me about the situation and that was the first that I received the letter. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? It hasn't been inspected by a dealer if the dealer will not respond back and they are not taking appointments online from the Kia Dealer. If I am not hearing anything back I will have to take this further because, someone can get hurt if it's a recall on my car. I need a new car or something. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they
The car is burning through a lot of oil and I see smoke from the engine bay (back of engine) though i don't see leaks under the car. It smells like burning oil.
We bought our vehicle in April of 2020. In July 2020 our car broke down and Kia replaced the engine due to a recall that caused the engine to fail. We continued to get our oil changed per the recommended miles. In August of 2022, our turbo failed. We brought it into the dealership and were advised that the engine was bone dry of oil. There has been no oil leaks, nor was our oil light on. After some research we discovered despite this being a common issue with this motor that there is not a recall. Our turbo was replaced and now our entire engine of only two years old needs to be replaced again.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that she heard an abnormal sound at the front of the vehicle. The contact then stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated. The contact was unsure of any warning lights being illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not yet diagnosed. The contact then received notification of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V703000 (Trailer Hitches). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while receiving a routine oil change, the mechanic noticed that the vehicle had no oil in the engine. The mechanic added oil but then noticed that the oil return line was leaking. The dealer was contacted and stated that they are aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 162,000. The VIN was not available.
Engine failed. Car received all maintenance and was burning oil and no leaks detected. It has the Theta II engine that is known to fail.
My vehicle began blowing cold air instead of heated air. Then the engine began over-heating and it cracked the radiator. After radiator was replaced my 2016 Sorento continued to blow cold air and continued to overheat. KIA dealership says I don't qualify for recall repairs. My mechanic says I do. My mechanic says my vehicle is not safe to drive. I want KIA to FIX MY 2016 Engine problem. On December 2, 2022 my vehicle overheated and began spewing antifreeze. I am glad there wasn't a fire.
Gear shift unable to put into drive, and unable to reset. I have to use a screwdriver to maneuver gear shift
The oil pressure switch is leaking and has leaked oil into the engine harness. The engine harness and PCM need to be replaced. I was told it’s not safe to drive. This issue has been flagged as a warranty issue 3.3L engine, but is yet to be approved for the 2.4L engine. My car only has 46,875 miles on it and this issue should be approved to be covered under new vehicle limited warranty coverage.
I was driving my 2016 Kia Sorento on the freeway when I heard a loud boom, like a gun shot and then the vehicle was showered with glass from the sunroof that exploded. It was NOT struck by any object or rock. Fortunately the sun shade prevented me from getting glass poured on my head. The dealership denied responsibility and I am in the process of getting it replaced though my insurance company. In doing research I found that while it not common place it has happened more than I thought.
My 2016 Sorento started using oil in between oil changes beginning November 2022 after recall repairs and other repairs completed by the KIA dealership. We’re now adding oil every other day, checking the oil almost daily. There is no sign of oil leak where vehicle is parked, does not smoke and no warning lights of low oil pressure. Kia should be made to fix these cars! I took good care of my car with regular oil changes and overall maintenance. This is obviously a case of a bad product on Kia's part, and they should be made to stand by their work!
While i was driving on the road, the car installed. i pulled over on the shoulder and i started the car and the engine started knocking. I change the oil on the car regularly and on time. I didnt see any engine warning lights or anything. I am going to tow the car to a kia dealership and see what they say
When lights are turned to automatic setting they often turn on during daylight or off at night. They have now turned off while driving at night on unlit roads and highways and we are lucky we did not have an accident. Typically jiggling the knob on light lever will reset the lights to be correct, but this leads to distracted driving often while not being able to see the road.
There is an URGENT FIRE RISK that they aren't fixing! How can there just NOT be a remedy? Please make Kia fix it?
My car is facing a huge amount of oil consumption in a short time period of a month after change the oil. I have an appointment this morning and see what they can do.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage as approximately 84,000.
The hood of the car has large amounts of paint peeling. The paint peeling has progressively worsened. The paint on the roof of the car also has a similar problem with the paint.
While driving down the road at highway speeds, the engine died. Losing power brakes and steering. I was able to move over to the shoulder. The engine is seized. Oil changes done every 3,500 miles and with full synthetic and a kia branded filter every time. I believe the 2016 2.4L engine has an internal oil problem. There are 617 complaints on the 2016 Sorento, and every one of them that states Engine, is a seized engine. That's only the people that thought to complain. I have found hundreds of comments on youtube videos and several friends that own similar (2015 2.4L Sorento) that have all had to replace their engines from loss of power at highway speeds. I was passing a car when the Sorento engine died and had to navigate back to the left lane and onto the should with no power steering or brake assist, all while being surprised and confused as to why the engine wouldn't restart. Not taken to the dealer yet for inspection, but a local mechanic said the engine appears seized. No warning lights on the dash until the engine died. No oil pressure light, no battery light, no check engine light, until the engine died.
My 2016 Sorento started using oil in between oil changes last summer. Per Kia dealership's instructions, I performed an "oil consumption test" which resulted in being told that it was using oil, but not enough to qualify for any type of repairs or assistance from Kia. I continued getting the oil changed on schedule and adding additional oil in between changes, checking the oil almost daily. Now, my engine has completely locked up and have been told I need a new engine, at my own expense of course. Kia should be made to fix these cars! I took good care of my car with regular oil changes and overall maintenance. This is obviously a case of a bad product on Kia's part, and they should be made to stand by their work!
Headlights drop out without notice, most noticeable when it’s dark! Happens often
Excessive consumption of oil. At my last oil change, I was told that my motor was completely dry. Engine knocks and shuts off. Need to monitor and top off motor oil every week.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while the brake pedal was depressed, she placed the vehicle in park; however, the RPM’s increased rapidly and the engine revved. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that her husband turned off the vehicle and disconnected and reconnected the battery cables however, he restarted the vehicle and the failure recurred. The contact stated that she notified multiple dealers of the failure and was informed that no appointments were available until February of 2023. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V089000 (Vehicle Speed Control). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximate 110,000.
Vehicle uses excessive amount of engine oil. It burns appx a quart of oil every 750 miles. There is no evidence of a leak in the driveway or on the undercarriage of the car. Informed dealer and was told it may be a bad oil drain plug. This is not evidenced by any visible oil loss. Loss of oil in this amount could cause engine failure where traffic conditions would put driver and other vehicles at risk.
October 30th 2022 I was driving with my 3&4 yr old son's after dropping my fiance off to fish. I had run to the store and on the way back to pick him up the car completely died without ANY waring at a Stop sign. Everything just shut down Completely! I called a tow truck and he was unable to jump me so the car was towed. The mechanic said my engine was seized and sounded like it had bolts rattling around the engine, he also mentioned he has seen this in 5 engines this past couple weeks!!! I was recommended to bring it to a Kia dealership to further inspect. I found paperwork for an extended warranty on Oil Pressure Switch Leaking, the dealership only looked at this part and said it was ok and the warranty doesn't cover the engine only that part. The dealer and mechanic said there was oil in the car and they could tell we put new filters recently ( which we did on our last oil change ).I was then recommended to contact Kia consumer affairs to enter a claim. I have done so and been denied. I will call today to file again. A new engine was quoted to cost $13,000. I was told to have the engine examined would be $1,500. And I would be responsible and still have to pay for the new engine. My car has 90,366 miles and is our only vehicle. After researching how many other poor people this is affecting and had almost exact same thing happen to them is CRAZY!!! Something needs to be done. Reading Kia is known for engine failure and leaking head gaskets being a manufacturer error but some
We purchased a 2016 KIA Sorrento from JTs Chrysler Jeep Dodge located at 5215 Sunset Blvd, Lexington, SC 29072 on September 27, 2021. In February of 2022, we had the oil changed and it the vehicle seemed to be burning oil but no oil leaks. We took the car to the Galeana Kia dealership on Greyston Blvd and they were backed up for months. The car has sat dormant for the past 5 to 6 months as we were searching for who could work on the vehicle. We took the vehicle back to Galeana Kia and they informed us that the #2 cylinder had no compression. They further proceeded to share with us that a recall was issued several years ago for an ECU upgrade and KSVS(not sure what that is) and this would have given them a code for KIA to authorize replacing the engine. Their claim from KIA is that since this was not done according to the lawsuit against KIA they could not replace the engine. The website that the dealership used to verify if there were recalls was https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/vinLookup and i have attached a copy for review. i am now saddled with a vehicle needing an engine replacement due to improper recall reporting by the sites and lack of due diligence by the JT's dealership. What do i do now?

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
