UNKNOWN. I bought my car used in 2023 it showed that a recall that I’m currently dealing with was fixed in the past with the previous owner and that the warranty on the recall expired back in 2021. Well now I’m dealing with an issue with my car and repairs are way more than the car is worth. Wouldn’t this mean that they didn’t complete the recall correctly in the past and that jeep should cover it ? I’m left with a vehicle I cannot drive because of them not completing the recall correctly in the past or by using faulty parts. What to do from here? I included what the report.
2014 Jeep Cherokee complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2014 record →
Bought a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, while driving the vehicle one day it started braking while accelerating causing it to jerk the vehicle and had to pull over causing the car to completely shut off. I took it to a dealership to get two recalls fixed on it that I found out about and after getting the vehicle back from the dealership and driving it there has been poor acceleration, harsh shifting gears. I was getting a lug nut replaced on my tire at a dealership. I was about to leave with my vehicle and it wouldn’t get out of the parking brake. Then the Service parking brake light comes on the far. I have to get them to look at it again and they find water damage to the Parking Brake Module due to a leak from somewhere. Having to wait on estimates on what it will cost to fix it. Looked into this issue and find out that others have dealt with this as well. With water leakage in the back trunk space and into the Parking Brake Module!! Definitely needs to be a recall on this type of major road safety hazard. Luckily I wasn’t driving when this happened or it could’ve caused a wreck. There is a class action lawsuit I was reading about again Jeep for 2014-2020 models due to water damage to parking brake module and I believe there needs to be a recall on this defect from factory.
Water in electronic parking brake module by spare tire corroded wiring causing parking brake to engage needing to replace the entire module and wiring. The issue appears to be that water may be leaking into the electronic parking brake module, causing damage and corrosion.
When is someone going to hold Chrysler liable for all of its fuel tank problem instead of passing the problem onto the consumers! The fuel tank 68217191AD im my 2014 Jeep Cherokee has been changed five times. I don't know about you but that tells me they have had problems with this tank from the very beginning. The new 68217191AF costs around 800 dollars to replace and they won't guarantee it not to do the same thing. They also have tank problems in other vehicles they make. If you don't hold them liable for their mistakes they will they will say sorry we know it's a problem but since it's not a recall you have to pay. Also had gas come flying out of tank getting on face arm and leg.
While driving, the transmission goes into neutral. This happens at any speed. It won't go into gear at all. The local Jeep dealer said they could replace my transmission that I pay for. There was an initial lawsuit on these. But, any owner after the first one doesn't get help. I am disabled and on a limited income. I am stuck at home because I never know when the vehicle will go into neutral. I don't know what to do. This has happened every time I drive it. I have had to risk it to drive to the doctor and to get my prescriptions. If I can get it off of the road, I cut it off. It usually goes back into gear. But, when it goes into neutral, my complex PTSD and my anxiety disorder goes into overdrive. I feel absolutely hopeless about this. I would appreciate any help I can receive.
This vehicle has an extremely dangerous & ongoing issue related to the 9-speed transmission. Many times the vehicle does not know when to shift, sputtering/sluggish/jerky when accelerating from being stopped and coming to a stop. Frequently the vehicle engages itself into Neutral and/or Parking Brake while driving at both city and highway speeds. This is a very dangerous safety hazard as any motorist trailing behind me can not anticipate the sudden deceleration that ensues. The vehicle then either becomes "stuck" in a gear at too high an RPM at given speed, or engages the parking brake or seems to then be in Neutral. These instances regularly frequent, leaving me having to pull off side of roadway in sometimes dangerous position, perform handful of restart cycles in order to clear the condition and be back in a proper enough gear-state to get back on the road. The following cluster warning lights coincide with the issues: "Check Engine" - "Service Transmission" - "Service Parking Brake". After a handful of restart cycles, the lights clear from the cluster, but the issues remain. The vehicle is unable to come to a comfortable complete stop without a premature-sudden jerk stop. This throws anyone in the vehicle forward in their seats. Also, when ascending an incline or traversing a decline, the vehicle shifts off-sequence in such a way to violently jerk-kick, feeling as though something in the drivetrain will disconnect itself from the chassis. I have recently attempted to subm
My 4WD light came on at the end of August 2024. Was told I needed to order a part - RL307402AI PTO unit. Was told I cannot drive my car much until I get the part. It is now December 6, 2024 and part is still not in. Was told there is over 3,000 people waiting for this part.
When starting to accelerate the the transmission hesitates to shift, then up to 30 mph or so it the car will stutter / miss fire causing a jerking motion of the car. It will accelerate to a steady speed abourn 55 mph.
I was driving on the highway when the PTU randomly locked up as if I hit the emergency brake, and made me come to a stop, no one was behind me at the time and I was able to get the car to the side of the road
3 times now my car has engaged it's own parking brake and I haven't been able to disengage it. The first and last time it engaged itself in a parking lot after I started my car. The first time I had it towed and the issue had resolved itself before the dealer had a chance to look and since they could not duplicate the issue they let it go. The second time I had it towed to my local mechanic who had to physically disconnect it and reconnect it to get it to disengage. The second time it happened while I was stopped at a stop sign. This third time it engaged at my sons parking school after I started the car. I had it towed to my local mechanic, he disconnected and reconnected and it keeps instantly re-engaging. This is an on-going issue and clearly if it engages itself while running (happened once) is a major safety concern.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while coming to a stop, the vehicle stalled with no warning light illuminated. The contact also noticed that the electronic brake pedal became inoperable and would not engage. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the PTU (power transfer unit) had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.
As of this date: Started about a year ago, when Jeep was over 150,000 miles. When accelerating to turn or from a stop sign or light, vehicle would stall, mimicking the feeling the vehicle ran out of gas. This occurred about once a month. Working at home and not driving my vehicle as much its hard to say if it would have occurred more often. Checked for any codes, none appeared. As I have recently started driving back in the office 3 days a week, the issue of stalling at any given time with no warning began occurring more often. Took it to trusted local service shop, they changed the purge valve pump and gas cap, as they were puzzled on the problem. Did not seem to matter if gas was full, half or under half. The issue occurred twice within 2 weeks. Service shop recommended taking to dealership. Jeep dealership are not aware of any similar issues. Which I found interesting as I researched and found massive posts from various jeep forums as well as this one. They capped off hose to charcoal canister, hoping that would help. And told me its a process of elimination at this point. The next evening it stalled again. I have now parked my vehicle as this has become a safety hazard. Stalling anywhere at any given moment could cause a tragic accident. will be contacting dealership to voice my concern. Hoping for a positive resolution.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the transmission only shifted gear at 5,000 RPM’s. The contact stated that the failure had become progressively worse, causing the contact to become stranded on two separate occasions due to transmission failure. The local dealer was contacted; however, the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the VIN related to the failure and there would be no assistance provided. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
Electronic parking brake came on when I started the vehicle and will not disengage, so the vehicle is stuck in a parking lot.
Hello my front passenger suspension bolts sheared due to over torque condition. My mechanic said he believes there was something related to this, but it is a serious safety issue. I checked the Stellantis bc and NHTSA Recall site and found nothing. My front drive train is bent and I can’t imagine the risk it out my wife and daughters. Could have snapped on the highway and killed them, and potentially others, in an accident.
The PTU on my 2014 Jeep Cherokee failed and was replaced. The attached documents were sent to Stellantis as a “reimbursement request”, was denied per the attached 10/17 email from Jeep Customer Care. As evidenced by numerous online complaints as well as NHTSA Recalls and class action lawsuits, replacement of the PTU was the result of a faulty design and safety concerns. The Stellantis refusal of my claim for reimbursement is unacceptable. What assistance can NHTSA provide to resolve this matter? Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The component that has failed was the PTU. It is available for inspection as well. My familys safety and myself along with other drivers safety was put at risk due to the "recall solution" for the failed ptu splines failing causing my vehicle to lose propulsion and setting the parking brake in traffic while at intersections as well as in traffic. The vehicle has not been inspected by any manufacturer, law enforcement, insurance, or any other. There were no service light prior to the component failing it just happend and almost caused us to get hit in the rear. The lights came on after the component failed, and this vehicle has had the "recall" addressed, but the recal is supposed to keep the problem from happening. Not i have "svc 4wd" light on and the vehicle has issues accelerating, no other symptoms prior to the failure. Fixing a faulty component is by replacing it with OE parts or aftermarket better parts, not programing the vehicle to operate in any other condition other than factory. Not program the vehicles ECU to shut the power off to the main drive wheels and send the power to the rear, and to set the parking brake whenever the vehicle is in park so it doesnt roll away because the failed ptu wont hold it like its supposed to. This vehicle has 137443 miles and it shouldnt have any drive train issues being driven on the pavement only 70% highway travel 30% residential/town travel. The W47 recall isnt a fix and the part needs to be replaced to factory. Tuning isnt the s
The service parking brake warning pops up on start up (P)!, along with the engine light and the traction control light. A warning that says service parking brake appears, around with a service transmission warning, and occasionally another message saying 4wd unavailable at the moment. Another message says restart car in park at zero speed, which the car is already in park & not moving. The car is not drivable when all of these are on. If I attempt to change gears, the gear light flashes & when the car shifts gears it is very loud. It is also hard to turn the wheel. The emergency park has also come on, in it's own, while driving. Almost killed me on the highway. Had also done it in my driveway, when starting to pull out. Also when the engine auto shifts, it makes like a whining noise. The engine sounds to go in overdrive whenever going down hills or up hills. Down is worse though. This has been doing this since I got the car in 2021. I expressed these issues to the place I bought the car from, just days after buying it, and they refused to fix anything even though it was under the 30 day warranty. They claimed no issues. I have proof of mentioning these issues, to the person who sold me the car through the dealership.
PTU is malfunctioning
I was in reverse backing out of my parking spot and the emergency parking brake activated by itself. My car immediately stopped and I was not able to move it forward or backwards. The brake warning lamp illuminated and a "service parking brake" showed up on my screen where the speedometer is. I was just grateful it didn't happen in the middle of the interstate or turning onto a major roadway. I was still freaked out this could happen. My car is still stuck where it went out. I've tried everything I can think of to deactivate the parking brake but nothing is working. This is so unsafe!!!
This morning, on the way to work, the electric parking brake module of my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk activated when the vehicle was in motion, making it impossible to accelerate or reverse. If I had been driving on the highway or interstate, this could have been fatal. The tech who towed my car said this is a known issue, and his sister even traded in her Cherokee because of this issue. There has recently been rain in the area, and it is a known issue among 2014-2020 Jeep Cherokee owners that the emergency parking brake module corrodes due to rainfall. The tech confirmed that my electric parking module is corroded. This issue has been confirmed by the repair center, which is charging $1,300 for a repair. I have reached out to Mopar, the manufacturer, to complain. This is a widespread, known-issue among Jeep owners, and there's currently a class action lawsuit against Jeep regarding this issue. There were no warning signs before the parking break activated. This needs to be a Jeep Cherokee recall.
The contact's wife owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 45 MPH, the gear shifter moved to neutral(N) independently and the vehicle stopped abruptly. The contact stated that the driver restarted the vehicle; however, the gear shifter remained stuck in neutral(N). The messages "Service Transmission" and "Service Parking Brake" were displayed. A bystander assisted the driver in pushing the vehicle to the side of the road and then to a gas station. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V447000 (Power Train). The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at 40 MPH, the RPM increased quickly, but the vehicle lost motive power, after which the contact became aware that the transmission had shifted into neutral independently. The driver was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the message "Please shift to park" was displayed. After shifting to park and back into drive, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V529000 (Power Train), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 170,000.
The contact owned a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while her grand-son was driving 50-55 MPH, the driver noticed that there was smoke inside the cabin and outside the vehicle. The driver pulled to the side of the road. The driver opened the hood and noticed that the underhood had caught on fire. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. The fire department informed the driver that the fire originated behind the engine. The contact was unsure whether a fire department report was filed. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle was significantly burned. No police report was filed. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the infotainment system screen display and the instrument cluster had turned black. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Vehicle parking brake automatically engages when vehicle placed in park and will not disengage. Brake lights are displayed as well as service parking brake message. Cruise control is also affected. Took vehicle to dealer and was told it was the brake switch. Ordered new brake switch and installed with no change. After reading service bulletin NUMBER: 08-060-16 titled “Electronic Parking Brake Module Connector Water Intrusion” I inspected the EPB module and found it to be corroded and partially full of water. Vehicle is not under warranty and this appears to be a very common and expensive problem that owners should not be responsible for. There is also potential of fire and of emergency brake engaging while driving that makes it extremely dangerous.
While driving at highway speed I loose power on the accelerator, the dashboard tells me to "shift to park" I need to pull off to side of the road without getting hit. Shift car into park. After I do that, the engine starts again and we are back to normal. Sometimes the car turns off during this period and needs to be restarted also, other times it doesn’t . Very scary.
The lug bolts that hold the tires on are swollen in place and cannot be removed without breaking them. As a result I cannot get the tires off of my vehicle. To remove the tires I have to take the vehicle to a dealership where they have to break the bolts to get the tires off. The jeep dealership told me this was a common problem with jeeps and Chryslers because the factory installs lug bolts with caps on them which are prone to swelling and prevent the tires from being removed. If I had gotten a flat tire I would have been stranded as the tires cannot be removed due to the swelling of the bolts. This is obviously very dangerous as it results in people being stranded on the side of the road because the tire cannot be removed to put on a spare. To fix this problem and prevent it from reoccurring I now have to buy 20 new lug bolts that are not capped and take my car to the dealership where they have special tools to break the lug bolts and remove the tires. This is also causing financial hardship as the new uncapped lug bolts cost $204 and the labor to remove the tires is $312. These capped lug bolts are defective because they are known to be prone to swelling and locking the tires in place. As such this is a dangerous factory defect and these capped bolts should not be used.
POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION | POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DIFFERENTIAL UNIT continues to experience movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft and has caused input spline teeth to wear off, leading to a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If there was a recall performed on this vehicle, it was either too late, or ineffective. Requires a new PTU.
When I made an appointment at an authorized dealer and took it in they said I must wait for parts. They put me on a waiting list. During the waiting period my car started to get a check engine light and over heating warnings which the recall clearly states it’s been recalled from over heating. I contacted the dealer who said they didn’t have a loaner for me and they will contact me when the parts come in. All of a sudden the check engine light went off and the car was ok. Finally the parts came on and we took it right away to be serviced. A week after picking it up it started doing the same thing. I had emails going back and forth with service who claims it wasn’t due to the recall. During this I had a salesman call me to ask me to trade it in and when I said no he said, “Good luck with service.” Sarcastically. Finally they told me that they were emailing Jeep awaiting a response. But before this when they thought I would trade it in they were extremely happy. When I decided not to everything changed. My husband who didn’t trust them asked me to have it towed out of the dealer so I did. The car was drivable and no warning lights. Then a day later it starts giving warnings again. The car is now sitting in my garage. If you start it up and drive it the check engine light is on and the thermometer shows the temp going all the way up. I have re-opened my case that Jeep closed on me thinking the car was fixed. It has not been. The car still shows warning engine lights and overheat
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop uphill, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle hesitated to respond and lunged forward while responding. Electronic E Brake engaged while driving. Will not disengage. Requires towing. E brake will not disengage.
I was driving down the road when all of a sudden my car was in neutral and I was unable to get the car moving. Called AAA they towed me to In a state Transmission because the transmission light came on. Interstate Transmission said there was nothing wrong with the transmission. It’s a computer problem. Soooo we going to fix this anytime soon?

The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
2014 Jeep Cherokee with 84,000 miles. I took it to a dealership because it had a clicking noise. They said the PTU, Power Train Unit was going bad and the splines were causing the noise. Apparently this can cause the vehicle to stop moving and will damage the transmission if not replaced. I was told the part is on backorder and may take a few months to get in. Received a quote for over $4,000 to replace the PTU.

The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
Without any notice my drivers side seatbelt won't retract. Not even a little. It is completely useless. When I looked online I saw that so many people were having this issue that there was possibly going to be a recall/repair. I tried several times to get it to retract even a little but it won't at all.
Bought 2014 Latitude Apr 5, 2023 Trouble starts with acceleration moving 40 mph suddenly I'm not going anywhere, car is in nuetral but gear shift is still in drive but engine is. Car message says put vehicle in park restart and choose desired action. I'm in the middle of traffic that's moving 40 to 60 mph. This has been ongoing for over a year. I have not had my Jeep for over 340 days since 2023 as it remains in shop.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while leaving the grocery store and attempting to close the liftgate, the liftgate failed to lock as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure) however, the failure persisted. The local dealer was contacted; however, no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
The emergency control module and wire harness got corroded from water. The brakes engaged and had to be towed to the dealership. Was informed at that time about the parts being corroded and needed to be replaced.
When I parked, it was fine, no brake problem. The next morning, I pulled out, got 10 feet & realized there was a problem. I saw the parking brake was mysteriously on and hasn't been off since. I've tried the release and resetting the parking brake for service, but the (P) parking brake light is orange, the regular brake light is flashing red, and there's a message that my 4wd is non-functional. I was lucky to get off the street.
My car is a 2014 My PUT failed in 2020 for the first time, and now In 2024 for the 2nd time. This is supposed to be a heavy duty vehicle and I dont ever take it off road. It shouldn't fail like this.
The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) needs to be replaced. A warning light came on, "Svc 4wd". I have 130,000 miles on the vehicle. My mechanic said it will take months to get the part because so many other Cherokees are having the same issue. It would seem to me that if this issue is so widespread, a recall should be made on it. Instead, I am being asked to pay $3,500 to have it repaired once the part comes in. Now I have a car that I am afraid to drive before it is fixed as I don't know if driving it will create further, more extensive, issues.
1* The electric Emergency Brake. 2* The E brake engages while I am driving and causes the car to abruptly stop almost causing the car behind me to rear end my car. 3* No, it just started, it happened 2 times yesterday 5/1/24. 4* No 5* Not that I am aware of.
See attached document for complaint
2nd time, I did not put auto brake on but it engaged itself and than was stuck and would not disengage. Luckily I was not in traffic, because that could have been a serious safety issue. The e brake engages on its own and than won’t dislodge. Multiple times this has happened now. Took it in once and paid almost $1500 to get it repaired, 3 days later same thing happened again!
Flooding water is getting into car, trunk where the spare tire is kept. That whole portion is wet with water and it is affecting the electrical because it is getting wet.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
