Filed Feb 4, 2020476,111 vehiclesHyundai Motor America
Defect. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
Risk. An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
Remedy. Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.

Defect. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.
Risk. If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy. Hyundai will verify the proper operation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and update the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127.

Defect. Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk. Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy. Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Defect. HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH NOVEMBER 1, 2008. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THE VEHICLES CONTAIN A WEIGHT SENSOR DESIGNED TO DEACTIVATE THE RIGHT FRONTAL AIRBAG WHEN OCCUPANTS OF CERTAIN WEIGHTS OCCUPY THE SEAT. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FOR THE WEIGHT SENSOR IS LOCATED UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE, BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THE CONNECTOR COULD BECOME CONTAMINATED AND MALFUNCTION SUCH THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY REGARDLESS OF THE WEIGHT OF THE OCCUPANT.
Risk. THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY IN CRASHES IN WHICH IT SHOULD NOT DEPLOY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT FROM THE DEPLOYED AIR BAG.
Remedy. DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE WEIGHT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CONNECTOR TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

Defect. HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH AUGUST 29, 2007. THE DRIVER'S SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR DETERMINES THE SEAT'S FORE AND AFT POSITION AND ALLOWS THE DRIVER'S FRONTAL AIR BAG TO DEPLOY AT THE PRESSURE APPROPRIATE FOR THAT SEATING POSITION, WITH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IN THE MOST FORWARD SEATING POSITIONS. THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE MAY RECEIVE AN UNSTABLE ELECTRICAL SIGNAL FROM THE SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR SUCH THAT, IN A CRASH THAT REQUIRES DRIVER FRONTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MAY DEPLOY AT THE HIGHER PRESSURE THAN INTENDED IF THE SEAT WAS POSITION IN ONE OF THE FORWARD POSITIONS IN WHICH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED.
Risk. A HIGHER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT THAN INTENDED INCREASES THE RISK OF INJURY RESULTING FROM AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.
Remedy. DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

The engine bay of my car caught fire due to the abs pump and module not turning off. I bought a part but never opened the box because I received a piece of mail stating the recall of that exact issue that they would replace all parts damaged. Which they didn't just installed their relay After Hyundai recall 188 was completed, my ABS pump failed. I believe it was caused by continuous power being applied post-shutdown — the exact defect the recall was meant to fix. The dealer performed an inspection but misrepresented the results and refuses to replace the damaged component under recall. This ABS pump failure is a direct result of the original recall condition — or a failed installation of the relay fix — which continued to keep power applied to the pump while the vehicle was off. This is the exact scenario the recall was intended to prevent. If the failure is caused by that condition, Hyundai is still responsible under recall. The facility which did the recall falsely recorded the mileage on my vehicle as to void any "warranty" associated with the recall as the car hasn't been driven since the module was replaced. I also instructed the diagnosis team of Wesley chapel Hyundai to keep my battery unplugged due to the parasitical drain in order to protect the battery from being dead celled and now I have to replace the battery as well. They also illegally opened a mailed box I had in my car with a part I bought prior to the recall being mailed out which I never took out of the box

It only drove once more before shutting down and the engine will no longer turn over.

We received a citation for brake lights not functioning. I realized that there had been a safety recall on the brake light switch, and contacted Brandfon Hyundai in New Haven, CT. They did nothing. Upon further investigation on the Hyundai website, I noticed that the brake light switch campaign was marked "closed" in 2013, when the car was still owned by my mother-in-law whom has since gone blind and has sold the car to us. I took it upon myself to purchase and install a new brake light switch, and all new bulbs, but to no avail. Not only are we likely to get cited again, but having no brake lights is a safety hazard. At first, it was only the right side brake light out. Then the brake lights would stay on by themselves. Now, not even the rear window light, which should go on without the signal going through the computer, will go on.

2008 Elantra should be added to the crankshaft Theta II recall. 2098 Elantra has the 2.0L engine unlike its prior years where they are made with a 1.6L engine. Last week my 2008 Elantra exhibited all the signs of this malfunction (A knocking noise from the engine that increases in frequency as the engine rpm increases. Reduced power and/or hesitation and vibration. Illumination of the “check engine” light in the instrument cluster. Illumination of the “engine oil pressure” warning lamp.) When this occured i had taken it to Auto Zone and had the computer scanned for error codes. (See attached report). Based on the report a tune up was done, ignition coil replaced and sensor replaced. Car would still not start. When my mechanic furthe diagnosed it (he could not find the issue until he used his scope camera)he found the issue was that there is damage to the "trigger wheel" inside the crank shaft. He also said this almost never happens in a car and does not know what could have made this happen. Please investigate this issue further, this is a dangerous situation of engine seizing and should be investigated immediately and thoroughly.

This was covered last time under the Salt Belt Corrosion Class Action Settlement. Hyundai is aware there is still a problem, but the undercoating recall does not work and this is still a safety hazard and it may be the exact same part. Our car was sitting under our carport and got know on door that our car was on fire! We call 911 the cam and put fire ot that had also taken all the siding off the side of the house. Firemen said fire started under hood they thought. We believe that this fire was caused by a short circuit in abs module. We looked at recalls tonight and found this out.

I own a ‘08 Hyundai Elantra. On July 21 my boyfriend and I were driving home when the rear sub-frame assembly failed, it rotted and broke where the control arms attach. The left rear tire was no longer attached to the frame of the car properly. It is available for inspection. It was a catastrophic failure, if we had being going faster it could have been deadly. Turns out Hyundai knew the materials they used were poor quality because in 2016 there was a service campaign for underbody corrosion treatment, which was completed on my vehicle. Fast forward to 2021, despite the corrosion treatment the sub-frame failed. My mechanic said the failure is not normal. Hyundai has not been responsive.

When I am driving the vehicle all of a sudden it will jump back really fast And the check engine will go on and If I continue to drive the vehicle it seems like I'm putting pressure on the gas for it to go But then once I turn off the vehicle the check engine light will all of a sudden be gone. If I drive the vehicle again the problem won't happen right away it will be some time before it happens again all of a sudden.

KH TOLD ME AFTER EXTENSIVE CHECKING & VIDEOING THE UNDERSIDE OF CAR (THEY SENT ME VIDEO) THAT IT WAS THE BATTERY. IT DIED ON THE WAY HOME ! AND THEN: - KH MISDIAGNOSED MY CAR THREE TIMES ! - HEAD GASKET NOW - KH TOLD ME THEY TOOK "SEVERAL TEST DRIVES" YET THE MILEAGE IN & THE MILLAGE OUT ON THEIR INVOICE WAS EXACTLY THE SAME ! - TOOK OVER A MONTH TO GIVE ME ESTIMATE - WILL NOT RETURN MY CALLS (30+ CALLS) TO THE SERVICE MANAGER - DEALER MANAGER FAILED TO RETURN MY CALLS ALSO - EVEN THOUGH HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE DEPT THEMSELVES SUGGESTED THE DEALER HONOR THE 100,000/10 YEAR WARRANTY - KH REFUSED ! - KH HAD PUT AN ERRONEOUS LIEN ON THE CAR THE DAY OF PURCHASE AND IT TOOK ME OVER A MONTH TO HAVE REMOVED - PLEASE NOTE: MY MOTHER BOUGHT THE CAR NEW FROM THIS SAME DEALER - I WAS WITH MOM AND SHE WROTE THEM A CHECK FOR THE FULL PURCHASE PRICE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHEN I STARTED UP THE CAR ONE MORNING IN EARLY MAY; ENDED UP GETTING A NEW GAS CAP. 24 HOURS LATER, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN WHEN I START UP THE CAR. AFTER SMOKE TESTING FOR LEAKS, GOT THE PURGE VALVE REPLACED. 24 HOURS LATER, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN WHILE I'M AT A STOP LIGHT. WAITED COUPLE MONTHS DUE TO NO INCOME DURING PANDEMIC. CODE WAS THE SAME REGARDING EMISSIONS ISSUES; ANOTHER SMOKE TEST REVEALED FAULTY VENT CANISTER VALVE. GOT IT REPLACED AND DROVE FINE FOR AN HOUR. FEW HOURS LATER, THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON ONCE AGAIN WHILE I'M ACCELERATING AFTER A TURN. THE MECHANIC THAT INSTALLED THE VCV CHECKED THE PART AS WELL AS THE PURGE VALVE AND NOTICED NEITHER PART WERE FUNCTIONING AS NEEDED. HE STATED POTENTIAL ECU ISSUE OR FAULTY FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR WITH THE LIKELIHOOD OF THE LATTER BEING THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE. I DID NOT OKAY WORK ON EITHER PART; HE DID WHAT HE COULD AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF. WHEN I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME OF YET AGAIN. NHTSA RECALL SHOWS 08V429000 (AND A SEPARATE 08V694000 FOR PUERTO RICO) THAT APPEARS TO COINCIDE WITH MY ISSUES AS WELL AS THAT OF MANY OTHERS (BASED ON RESEARCH). MY VIN DOES NOT SHOW AS BEING PART OF THE RECALL, HOWEVER. I QUESTION WHETHER HYUNDAI FULLY DISCLOSED THE FULL LIST OF THE POTENTIAL CARS AFFECTED BY A FAULTY FUEL PUMP MOTOR.

LEAVING WORK I HEARD A NOISE COME FROM THE CAR AS I WAS LEAVING PARKING LOT OF THE HOSPITAL WHICH HAS A TEN MPH SPEED LIMIT AFTER BEING PARKED FOR 9 HOURS. I REALIZED I FELT LIKE I WAS SITING LOOPSIDED. SO I TURNED OFF INTO MY EMPLOYERS FRONT LOT TO INSPECT THE CAR. I WALKED AROUND NOTICED THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WAS LOWER. TIRES LOOKED OK SO I LOOKED UNDERNEATH AND SAY THIS RUSTY DRAGGING STRUT/CROSS MEMBER PIECE.. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED AS I KNEW IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AS DIDN'T KNOW WHAT ELSE IT DAMAGE TIRES, SHOCKS ETC. THE CAR VISUALLY APPEARED TO BE DRAGGING IN THE REAR ON DRIVERS SIDE DUE TO THIS. THIS PART WAS RECALLED BY HYUNDAI IN 2014 DUE TO CORROSION. .

2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA HAS A KNOW ISSUE REGARDING THE SUBFRAME 'CAMPAIGN TT1'. MY ELANTRA'S SUBFRAME IS ROTTING AND HAS HOLES ROTTED THROUGH IN A FEW AREAS. IT'S A 12 YEAR OLD CAR THAT IS OTHERWISE IN GOOD CONDITION. HYUNDAI WON'T HELP SINCE I HAD THIS RECALL 'FIXED' ORIGINALLY IN 2014. THEY REISSUED THE CAMPAIGN IN 2017. I BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW. IT'S BEEN A RELIABLE CAR AND IT STILL RUNS AND LOOKS GOOD. BUT SINCE MY FRAME IS ROTTING AWAY, I WON'T BE ABLE TO PASS ANOTHER INSPECTION AND THE CAR WILL BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. *TR

Complaints 1-50 of 315, newest first, reproduced as filed.
Going by the federal record, it is one of the Elantra years to avoid: an unusual share of its 315 complaints describe fires, crashes or deaths for a car of its age. The most common complaint is about the steering (15%).
What is the most common problem with the 2008 Hyundai Elantra?
The steering: 47 of the 315 complaints (15%) are about it. Owners most often say it sets off warning lights on the dash (36%), loses steering assist or the wheel locks (28%) and loses power (11%). The typical report comes at 76,000 miles.
How many recalls does the 2008 Hyundai Elantra have?
7 safety recalls on file with NHTSA, the most recent filed Feb 4, 2020. The largest, 13V113000, covered 1,712,336 vehicles. Recall repairs are free at a dealer; whether a specific car still has one open depends on its VIN.
At what mileage do 2008 Hyundai Elantra problems start?
Half of the complaints that record an odometer reading came in before 54,000 miles. For the steering the midpoint is 76,000 miles.
Has NHTSA investigated the 2008 Hyundai Elantra?
Yes, 2 times. The latest, DP21003 ("Throttle control system vulnerabilities"), was opened Nov 12, 2021 and closed Jun 20, 2023.
Are there service bulletins for the 2008 Hyundai Elantra?
The manufacturer filed 47 technical service bulletins and other notices for it with NHTSA, most of them about the engine (6), the transmission (6) and the steering (5). They include a warranty extension, 5NP-F8M5G-03, filed Feb 27, 2017. A bulletin is a repair instruction to dealers, not a recall: the fix is usually free only under warranty.
Reading this record
A high number of complaints describe fires or crashes.
Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
Most recent recall on file: Feb 4, 2020. Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation.
