Dear NHTSA Team, My Honda Odyssey 2018 EX has been having issues with my Driver side Sliding door opening/closing using the Auto power. It was randomly sometimes not fully closing (kept reopening). Then it would get fixed automatically . This was happening for 3+ years . I had got the open recalls done over the years. This week it just stopped opening suddenly . And it was not getting resolved either manually or even after turning ON/OFF car . I took it to Honda Dealership in Dublin, California . They said error code B2049 the left slide door motor and door cable , latch were all faulty. And it would cost about 2500$. This was very expensive and I asked them to just put the door back and they charged the labor cost of 730$. When i look up online I see in forums multiple customers having such issues in this 2018 to 2020 odyssey model. My car hasn't been in any accident and my door is in great condition visually, so it has to be some faulty mechanism with the door as I am first owner and have taken great care of the car. I have records of oil changes, tire changes and other maintenance over the 6 years of ownership. Request NHTSA team to help look into this as it may be some rework during the different recalls to fix the sliding door or a manufacturing issue still not fixed. This can be dangerous as customer needs a functioning door to enter/exit out of Van. Thanks [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
2018 Honda Odyssey complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2018 record →
Initial issue was that the power tailgate would not open at all. Took the vehicle to the dealership where they replaced the latch and the control unit that was completely fried. When I asked what could cause that, they said they didn't know. I already suspected water. Two days after picking the vehicle up from the dealership, the tailgate is now constantly opening and closing on its own. The only way to stop it is to turn off the vehicle and lock it. I searched online and found multiple posts from people with the exact same problem and almost all of them say it was water getting into the control unit. This poses an obvious safety concern since it could close on one of my kids. They would not be strong enough to stop it. I have reported the issue to Honda HQ and have recommended that the other people with the issue do the same.
At critical accelerating situations (turning, merging, passing...) the minivan will hesitate, and no power is delivered to the wheels. As a result, the car does not perform as intended and can cause an accident when turning, merging, or attempting to pass. The only resolution is to remove any pressure from the accelerator and allow the car 1-2 seconds to recover, then you can usually accelerate slowly. Sometimes this has happened multiple times in the same accelerating event. This happens on 2018-2019 Honda Odysseys with 3.5l V6 with ZF 9HP transmissions. This has happened multiple times and Honda has failed to correct this issue. This is a known issue and has been part of a class action lawsuit. The most recent incident occured yesterday and the vehicle automatically shifted into Neutral and would no long drive.
2018 Honda Odyssey failed transmission systems. This vehicle had recalls in regard to TCM module and softwares in past. Normally transmission system should last well over 150,000 miles for this type of vehicle. My car failed at 74000 miles. That too without any advanced warning. Vehicle was maintained and serviced at same dealership regularly where it was purchased. Honda is claiming its outside their 60000 mile powertrain warranty. Honda expects me to pay over 10,000 dollars for repair. I believe my vehicle is having issues with transmission related to TCM module recall of 2019 and Recall 04v176 of 2023. Honda is refusing to look in to possibility of my vehicle's issue could possibly related to those recalls. I believe those recalls need to be looked at and my vehicle should have been involved in those recalls. I have documented proof for all services performed and current vehicle inspection report.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle independently decelerated. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the contact became aware of a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced or repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed of an unknown recall with a similar failure; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
Current recall on vehicle. Been on the waitlist since end of December 2023. Contacted local dealership multiple times and they are unable to get part in. The vehicle has been showing engine light more often. Struggles to start occasionally.
My 2018 Honda Odyssey doesn't have any current vehicle recalls but it's is experiencing the engine stall while driving, the power sliding floors not locking properly and the power trunk making a grinding noise when it opens and closes. I had the vehicle inspected at the local Honda dealership and they told me there was nothing they could do about the vehicle stalling, the power doors not closing and the trunk grinding. From releasing the brake and pressing the gas, the vehicle will stall and then spin the tires as if I'm racing or burning rubber.
Windshield monocular camera seems to be failing. No way to stop the warnings from popping up everytime I crank my car, can’t even use cruise control. I paid extra for these features and it seems to be a safety issue.
While driving, the transmission will go into limp mode and will not drive over 40 mph. Comes on and off intermittently. Will not show error code. Was almost rear ended by semi trailer when happened
Vehicle stalls when pulling out into traffic! Terrifying with my 6 kids and I'm immediately getting rid of this vehicle. Tried to have the fuel pump (current recall) replaced but Honda dealership has the vehicle for 6 DAYS! and still didn't have the part in. Upon dropping the vehicle off the tailgate lift would not work properly. This van is a load of garbage since they started using so many modules to control it! Extremely disappointed in Honda. They know all of these faulty parts and don't care enough to fix them for the safety of the consumer. Absolutely horrifying the direction of the automobile industry.
Tailgate malfunction due to water seeping through tailgate resulting in tailgate module to stop working.

1.5 weeks after servicing vehicle at the dealership (oil change and tire rotation) Warning lights come on beeping upon starting vehicle. The following systems are malfunctioning... -collision mitigation syatem problem -adaptive cruise Control problem -lane keep assistance problem -road departure mitigation system problem -auto high beam problem. This also removes any ability to use regular cruise control in any capacity (even without adaptive cruise control on) Honda certified mechanic diagnosed code : U3000-49 as a bad Multipurpose Camera Unit. Parts alone cost $1,200 then labor and cost to calibrate (which must be done at dealer). The cost of this repair to MAJOR safety features would be over $2,000. This is a safety related issue that should be recalled immediately. We do not currently feel safe in our 2018 Honda Odyssey, nor do we have $2,000 to complete this repair. Our research (a few screenshots attached) of this malfunction of the Multipurpose Camera Unit shows widespread issues on 2018 odysseys in particular. To me that warrants an investigation and recall. A dealer actually told me "you don't need those features to drive the vehicle". Well, we don't NEED a backup camera and it was recalled. Why? Because we don't want to run over small children. I would like to be able use ALL safety featured on my vehicle. This isn't an entertainment system. It is the major safety feature on our family vehicle, which we saved for years to purchase. We ask that Honda consider the saf
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop, the vehicle stalled, and the brakes seized inadvertently. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle responded as needed. The contact stated that the failure recurred on another occasion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the failure could not be replicated. Additionally, the contact stated that the Lane Departure and other Forward Collision Avoidance warning lights were illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while making a turn from a complete stop, the vehicle responded, but suddenly stalled. The contact continuously depressed the accelerator pedal until the vehicle responded. Additionally, the contact stated while driving at various speeds and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated to respond as needed. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact related the failure to the recall. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that a diagnostic test was needed prior to the recall repair. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provide no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.
My vehicle started to show warning: Collision MitigationSystem Problem/ Road Departure Mitigation System Problem/ Adaptive Cruise Control Problem / Lane Keeping Assist Problem/ Auto High-Beam Problem. I took it back to Honda dealership and was told the Multipurpose Camera is damaged and needed to be changed. They asked if I have a vehicle accident and I told them I HAVE NOT BEEN IN ONE. I don’t understand why this just starts up all of a sudden and have seen other people complaining of this same problem.
Knocking noise began so I took it to a Honda dealership. They said I have a “lower knock noise” and need a new engine because a bearing went out for a rod which could cause my engine to seize. Though there is a recall for some 2018 odysseys, I’m being told mine isn’t covered. Apparently there are many more people with the same vehicle and the same issue as me. I’d like to see this included in the recall
The lane keep assist function via the monocam behind the windshield has failed causing an alert to show up a few minutes into driving that none of the systems related to it are functional. This appears to be a widespread problem amongst owners of the 2018 Odyssey. Additionally, Honda service centers are acting like this is a surprise to them but searching online will results many individuals with the same issue and then being charged 1300-2000 to fix it. Since the features are all safety related I assumed this was where I should submit this. Please let me know if this is not the case. See the honday odyssey forums for many people noting this problem... [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
When driving the engine starting making a loud metallic noise. The engine also was not operating as it should have been. This occurred in early March 2023. I was able to slowly drive it to the Honda dealership in Glenwood Springs and when I stopped the engine stopped, I was unable to restart it. After several weeks, the Honda dealership stated it needed a new Engine. Initially I was quoted around 12k, then they offered a good will discount and we got the replacement to be around 6k. In late 2023, I saw that there was a recall on 2018 Honda Odysseys for an engine defect that could cause the engine to "run improperly or stall while driving." This is essentially what happened to me, but my vehicle is not on the recall list limiting Honda's requirement to fully cover the cost of replacing the engine.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had experienced the failure, causing the vehicle to intermittently lose motive power while driving at various speeds. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The failure mileage was 50,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Soft or Low Brake Pedal The brake pedal have a soft feeling and travel to the floor with low effort. This is causing low braking performance and increased pedal stroke. This condition is increasing the risk of a crash.
Was driving in a rainstorm, a storm drain cap was pushed up and popped rear passenger tire. set off ALL passenger side airbags. I have a police report, numerous photos and videos.
During my recent recall repair by Ed Morse Honda in Riviera Beach, FL, I was advised that the rear tailgate sensor was reported as "wet". I do the maintenance myself, so I passed on a repair at that time by the dealer. Today, I researched what might have failed both online and with my Alldatadiy subscription, and accessed the part. Indeed, the Liftgate Control Module was molded and need of repair/ replace. However, I have grandchildren now, and during the removal - realized that in a water accident or other hazard where power is lost, there is NO WAY for rear passengers to exit the van by the rear tailgate. There is NO readily accessible latch or pull to open the tailgate from the inside, and NO key nor latch available from the outside for outside assistance. Additionally, if a child is in need of exiting the rear tailgate, there is NO child safety pull to allow them to exit. During my research on how to repair the vehicle, I saw that this is an ongoing issue for this model of Honda. I like my 2018 Honda Odyssey very much, it is my second Odyssey (the first was totaled in a T-bone accident, where both wife and daughter walked away), but I believe a recall is needed for the water issue affecting the Tailgate Control Board for the short term, and safety mechanisms added for the long term. Note: I have images, but the web site is NOT allowing uploads of any .jpg nor .pdf's at this time.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front passenger’s and rear passenger’s side air bags deployed without a crash or an impact. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.
2018 Honda Odyssey front camera failures. We bought it brand new and found out today that front multipurpose camera was not working properly. There are bunches of warning lights popped up on dashboard: LCC, LKAS… problems. I went to Google and Facebook to see there were so many people have the same problem particularly with this 2018 models. Dealership wanted $1800 to replace camera and they know that was Honda technical issues, not in customers control.
The forward camera malfunctions and causes the Cruise Control, Lane Assist, and Emergency Breaking to be inoperative. After looking online, this is a frequent issue for this van. I believe it is related to the recent recall because it was functioning perfectly until right after we had the recall repaired.
Collision mitigation system activates when over 45 mph and there is a car next to you at about a 2 o clock angle from the van. Also activates if collision mitigation system is disabled and you are using the cruise function. Front camera is clear and it's a big safety problem than can easily end in a rear end accident
There are mutiple errors shown and the features disabled. Looks like the front camera is defective and is being reported by many people

I don't yet know the exact cause of the problem, but while at highway speed (approx. 72 mph), my wife pressed the gas pedal to accelerate, and it didn't work. She continued to press the pedal, and after several seconds, the vehicle did accelerate. I see this issue on severe threads and will be contacting the dealer or my mechanic as we are very concerned about this safety issue, the vehicle not accelerating when the gas pedal is pressed.
The Control Module for the Power Tailgate experienced total failure due to water damage, documented by the servicing dealership (attached service invoice) and demonstrated by the attached photos. The point of water intrusion could not be determined definitively, but cracks in the bonding location between the roof, rear driver's side exterior D-pillar panel, and tailgate surround are the likely culprit (photos attached). Failure of the Module resulted in an unusable tailgate, except for a single manual lever on the inside of the vehicle, accessible behind a piece of plastic. It also resulted in a ceaseless, loud, constant beeping on both the inside and outside of the vehicle when traveling at over 1 mph. This vehicle has never experienced an accident.
Water intrusion is causing failure of my liftgate module. The maintenance shop has identified this as the issue. After doing some research, this appears to no be a one time situation as i have read of several other owners experiencing the same issue. Lift gate is not opening and potential of liftgate opening uncommand due to module failure.

On the week of May 3rd my car began to shift into different gears with no notice or reason while driving, when it would do this it would show a warning signal on the dash that stated"transmission issue!" And the gear letter would flash on the dash. I brought the car in to the dealership it was purchased from (Ira Honda Saco, ME) as the car was shifting into reverse and park while driving causing significant safety issues for myself and my children in the car. When I arrived I was told there was issue with loaners although the service employee was great in helping me find one eventually that day as I'm a solo parent with multiple children. However, when I brought the car I said there was a recall on the transmission for this exact issue. I was told my make model and year matched but not the VIN so it couldn't be the transmission recall/issue. Then I was told the issue was the fuel injectors but that they were not covered by any warranty so I'd need to pay out of pocket. Then I was told it was partially covered and I ended up paying out of pocket for the remainder and was told the car was all set no more issues, it's fixed, completely safe to drive. Now barely 4 weeks later on 6/1024 while driving on the highway the car slams into park with the same exact warning flashing on the dash. The car behind me nearly rear ended me and my seatbelt engaged as I was going 65mph and came to a complete halt, causing bruising to my chest and collar bone. I immediately brought it back to the
I was driving home and suddenly the lights with these warning signs just came on. LKAS, ACC, Collision Avoidance, Auto High Beam Problem Ive heard from many customers complaining of this of 2018-2020 honda odyssey models
Part of the interior frame under the dashboard disintegrated. This was discovered while Honda was fixing a different recall involving electrical components.

I have been experiencing engine hesitation issues with our Honda Odyssey for the last several months. We received a Safety recall notice in the mail and have tried to address the issue with 2 different dealers. The 1st dealer told me that the safety issue "should not cause any symptoms and we can't get the part for you." The second dealer told me to bring the car in for an appointment and they would address the issue and order the fuel pump for replacement. Several things happened during these visits to both Martin and Union Honda. Martin Honda would not address the safety recall. We were also having a "knocking" sound which they diagnosed as an issue with the right passenger strut. They told me that it needed to be replaced. Out of frustration with their customer service I decided to seek advice from our personal mechanic of 25 years. I have ordered struts for both the driver and passenger side which will be installed by our mechanic per their advice. Martin Honda never mentioned the driver's side strut. Union Honda said that they were going to charge me to "diagnose" whether or not the engine hesitation was coming from the fuel pump. They said it would take 2 days to diagnose. Within 2 hours I received a text stating that inspection of our car received the "green light." Everything passed and they did not notice the engine hesitation "while driving the vehicle." How is it possible that they didn't notice the "Failed - Critical Concern" of the Right Front Strut and Top Hat/B
Power tailgate issue continues to happen. The module is somehow getting water damage and shorting out. This is the second time in a year that I have to replace the module. I can’t even manually open my trunk without having to climb through the car and undo the latch from the inside
- Monocular Camera failure. It is available for inspection upon request. - Multiple Dash warning lights are on and several safety features, including forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking fail to work. Dealer states that the monocular camera cannot be disabled because it is a safety feature. - The problem has been confirmed by a dealer. The dealer stated the problem was not caused by consumer usage or accident, but was an internal failure of the monocular camera. - No additional inspections have been performed. -There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, which first appeared in April 2024 at ~104,000 miles on the vehicle.

At around 25 miles per hour the vehicle has a transmission issue where the vehicle seems to hesitate, then downshift causing the vehicle to lurch forward. This happens regularly and started sometime before I acquired the vehicle with 48k miles. Honda dealer had no fix to the problem.

Occasionally, when the driver presses the accelerator, the car hesitates for about 1-3 seconds before accelerating. This most commonly happens when starting up from a stop sign or red light and after letting off the accelerator to slow down temporarily and then pressing the accelerator to speed up. This has been happening for at least a year or two. I recently received a safety recall notice from Honda saying that if I were experiencing this symptom, I needed to contact a dealer to have it repaired for free (with "FREE" in bold, red, and underlined letters). However, when I called a dealer and later called Honda Customer Service, they both told me that I would need to pay a $170 fee to run a diagnostic check. Then, if the diagnostic check showed that my car was experiencing an issue related to the recall, I would be reimbursed the $170 fee. However, if the diagnostic check did not show that my car was experiencing the issue, I would not be reimbursed. Requiring me to risk $170 to run the diagnostic check is not repairing my vehicle for free - especially when I am experiencing symptoms described in the recall notice. I believe Honda and the dealer should be required to honor what they wrote in their letter and both run the diagnostic check and complete the repair at no charge to me.

On April 13th, 2024 our son was driving the family 2018 Honda Odyssey (Approx 83,000 miles) in a nearby city. He was driving at 43 mph when the vehicle shifted from drive to neutral without his shifting it. He tried to brake using the brake pedal but was unable to stop or slow the vehicle. He also tried to accelerate and was unable to accelerate the vehicle. All the lights on the dashboard lit up and he was forced to use the emergency brake to stop the minivan. A good samaritan stopped and assuming that the battery was the problem, tried to help jump-start the vehicle -- but they were unable to start the car. Our son called us, and I drove 20 or so miles to his location. After trying a jump box in the vehicle, we called AAA. After trying a jump start and a new battery, At this point the technician said that the vehicle would need to be towed. The transmission of the minivan appeared to be locked and the towing company was not able to find a means to unlock the transmission. As a result, the front tires were placed on skids, which allowed the minivan to be drawn up onto the bed of the tow vehicle and towed the vehicle 20 miles to the local dealer, which had originally sold us the vehicle and had completed all recent maintenance. On Monday, the Honda service technician assessed it. We were advised that the 2018 Odyssey would require a new engine. After involving American Honda, we learned that the transmission was also affected, and the car would need to have $28,000 of repairs

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
