Stopped vehicle at a drive though and put in in park. Afterword would not shift into drive, only in reverse. Had to back all the way through a parking lot to find a safe place to try to park as not to be in the way of other vehicles. Fortunately, at the time no one was parked behind me. after turning off the car, it would not start again and had to have the vehicle towed to a dealership for repair. There is a recall on many Ford vehicles for this exact same issue due to a shift cable bushing, but for some reason not on this particular vehicle. No warning lights appeared before the issue, only after I killed the car and tried to restart it.
Driving vehicle, Steering Assist Fault light comes on, steering wheel locks and vehicle becomes very difficult to operate. Locally, Ford dealership will not inspect as they will not take any calls in the service department. This is the second time this has happened to this vehicle. Vehicle has been previously taken to dealership, to which dealer was “unable to diagnose issue.” Vehicle was subsequently repaired, as an independent service center was able to diagnose issue and repair. Vehicle drove well for 4 months until today, when second incident occurred. In this situation, other vehicles on the road were in danger as I was unable to turn from turning lane, driving into outer tuning lane, almost striking another vehicle. Luckily, I had slowed down enough for vehicle to drive passed me without incident. There is something inherently wrong with the 2017 Fusion’s Power rack and Pinion Gear, and I implore Ford to do the right thing and look into this matter, as this issue is ongoing and widespread.

Engine dash light keeps coming on. A mechanic check engine number and printed TSB19-2346: 2.0L EcoBoost Ana says it’s under recall. But Ford dealerships around me refuse to do anything about it it. The error message is saying 2nd cylinder miss fire. Coolant keeps going low and car started to shut itself down.
Transmission failure while driving causing a safety issue for myself and others while immobilized in traffic. While stopped at a red light on a highway, my car failed to move forward when pressing the gas. There were no warning lights. Eventually after several tries the car lurched forward. A warning light finally came on when I reached my destination a mile away. The car was taken to a dealer who diagnosed transmission failure. The car has 63K miles on it and now requires a 5K repair to the transmission. The vehicle is still not repaired due to parts shortages.

While driving the vehicle the vehicle stalls or stops when attempting to shift to either reverse or drive. An alert comes on indicating shifter issues then vehicle was inoperable. Had to call for a wrecker to have it towed due to the issue. Left us stranded in a parking lot away from home. Local certified mechanic advised it was bushings, shifter cable to the transmission that went bad on the vehicle. He said there was a recent recall from Ford, so I contacted Ford by phone. I was told that my vehicle even though it is the exact same recall from Ford issue with my car, my VIN number was not included into the recall by Ford. I'm having to repair my car on my own at my cost.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while at the car wash, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed. The contact was informed that the VIN was not under recall and he had to pay out-of-pocket for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 65,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while the vehicle was park(P), the instrument panel indicated that the transmission was in drive(D). Due to the failure, the contact's husband called for a tow; however, the tow truck driver was able to instruct her husband over the phone on how to correct the failure. Once the vehicle was able to be driven, the contact's husband called the dealer where he was informed about the defect. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the defective part was replaced. Approximately six months later, the same failure recurred while the vehicle was in neutral(N) but the instrument panel showed the vehicle in park(P). The contact's husband was able to perform the same repair to correct the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked in her driveway on a hill without the emergency brakes, the vehicle rolled down the hill and bumped into her husband's parked vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer but was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated on April 2022, while she was driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle began to shake and failed to go over 50 mph. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the transmission to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V427000 (Power Train), however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and transferred her to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000. The consumer stated she should be reimbursed for the repairs.
The shift bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission has degraded then subsequently detached in the past in 2021. In 2022 after the shift bushing was replaced, it has now degraded again (without detaching yet) causing the vehicle to be stuck in reverse or drive after shifting vehicle. This has caused me on multiple occasions to place the vehicle in reverse to backup into the roadway and become stuck without the ability to shift the vehicle out of reverse. The only way to correct it was to turn off the vehicle to force it into park then start the car to place it into drive. This same thing occurred in the previous time before it detached. Being stuck in the roadway without the ability to shift is very dangerous. This is all due to having a 3 dollar shift bushing degrade over time. I hope FORD takes this seriously and replaces this shift bushing with a safer alternative.
The APIM in the vehicle is malfunctioning causing a constant drain on the 12v battery system. I brought the car to Ford and they said it is a common issue with the APIM malfunctioning, they quoted me 1800 to change the APIM which i can not afford. I was driving to work and my car smelled like rotten eggs, I started feeling nauseous and light headed. When I got to work I opened my trunk to get my backpack and noticed the smell was really strong in the trunk and was coming from the 12v battery. I touched the battery and it was scorching hot. After some research I found out that the rotten egg smell was the battery producing hydrogen sulfide gas which can be fatal. I believe an investigation should be opened to look into this for if I passed out behind the wheel from the gas myself and others would have been at risk of injury or death.
Both driver & passenger break line hoses have had to be replaced at only 56k miles. There was no corrosion on the hose, nor any wear & tear. There was a lengthwise split in the rubber exterior of the hose and breakdown of the interior braided hose which lead to break fluid leaks. Occurred on both driver & passenger front hoses.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while shifting the vehicle into drive(D), the vehicle shifted into park(P) and the “Shift System Fault” and "Service Required" messages were displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact stated that the gear shifter bushing had deteriorated. The vehicle was not diagnosed; however, the contact had purchased the bushing. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 76,872.
Vehicle constantly has 12v battery dying. Replaced with new battery and same thing 12v battery keeps dying. Hooked up my current meter to the car and it is constantly drawing 11amps from the battery. Pulled fuses until the current draw stopped and issues is coming from the APIM. I also did some research into the issue and it appears a lot of people are having the same issue where the APIM is not shutting off. How has there not been a recall on this yet? This can be dangerous if you can't start your car and your stuck in a snow storm for example.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the cross-traffic alert button detached from the dashboard. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the cross-traffic alert button to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 25,000.
As I was driving my shifter cable bushing came off in the parking lot and my cable came loose. I couldn’t switch gears and I had to shut off my car. It put my car into automatic parking brake but I checked under the hood and my shifter linkage was detached and the bushing was missing. Had this happened on the open road it could’ve caused a wreck.these bushings are made poorly.

The vehicle was then taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed of coolant intrusion into the cylinders. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,849.
Steering wheel wobbles and is loose. Can pivot up, or right / left about an inch. NOT a rotational loose (like worn bushings). Pivot point is right behind the wheel itself, as if it was the bolt that is part of other recalls (but 'not applicable' to my VIN???). Only 33k miles on car. 2017 year Fusion. Taking to dealer to "fix" today. Issue noticed during light morning commute on 5/18/2022 No other inspection to date. No warning lamps, messages, or other notices, now, or prior.
While driving, the dashboard goes black. When this happened, I slowed down to stop. After I’m almost stopped, the engine stops and spins the gear shift into park making grinding noise as cars do when they go into park before coming to a complete stop. This has happened twice.
I have a 2017 Ford Fusion bought in June 2020. (No warranty) Oct 2020 the Transmission went out. I REPLACED IT. August 2021 the Wrench 🔧 came on and was giving code P0302 cylinder 2 was misfiring. Changed all the spark plugs and coils except #2 because the was stuck or stripped. 5 people and Ford dealership (they wanted to much) tried to get it out (no luck) took it to a shop they got it out but had to re thread it. It drove fine. THEN one day I'm driving and my car literally started over heating and said I was low on coolant pulled over and let it cool down gave it more coolant. Drove it like nothing to see here. Everything was fine, SO I THOUGHT 1 week later it did the same thing but the coolant kept running out and my car immediately started to blow out smoke actually turned off before i could pull over in the middle of the freeway (extremely dangerous) for everyone called. I took the car back to the mechanic and told him what was wrong and this dude said I blew the engine I need a new one. WTF! HOW? Gave me a quote for $4900. #Ford you need to do a EFFIN recall bruh how is literally everyone going through the same gd problem? ITS a malfunction with Ford. Then to find out that Ford has a faulty built engine block that allows coolant to leake over to spark plug #2, #3 causing them to misfire, knowing it will cause problems for the consumer is down right evil disgusting and dishonest. People are spending hard earned money on these cars getting loans, to get reliable working
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while his wife was driving the vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard with the brake warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the contact discovered splattered brake fluid underneath the vehicle. The contact had the vehicle towed the dealer and was provided an estimate to replace both brake lines. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle and that the warranty did not cover the repair. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
When putting into reverse it jolts and shakes and makes a real loud noise and says vehicle and low gear and needs to be stopped (not sure of the exact wording} then when put into drive it does the same thing but not as rough as I try to continue to drive forward there is no power I barely step on the gas and it sounds real rough and loud it seems like it's hot under the hood more than usual I had to diagnose test run it's saying it's the power train system it's eating through all my gas the electrical has been acting weird the last few months but there was no warning signs popping up on my dash until out of nowhere my check light engine came on I called the dealership here in Ogden Utah they stated that my vehicle is outside of the recall time frame but it seems like everyone with a 2017 well actually from the last 10 years there's been issues it seems and it's all the same problem mostly I really don't think I should have to come out of pocket since this is an ongoing issue with Ford and their fusions
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the front window defroster was inoperable causing a visibility hazard to the driver. Additionally, all the windows in the vehicle were inoperable and would not roll down. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 92,000.
The car will not shift. The car will start but I cannot shift from Park to neutral or drive
Trunk randomly opens while driving. This has now happened 10-15 times over the past couple of years. I was unaware of nhtsa until researching the problem tonight after it most recently happened or I would have reported sooner.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while his daughter was reversing out of the driveway at approximately 5 MPH, the vehicle failed to shift into gear. There was no warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the shifter cable bushing had failed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000.
My 2017 for fusion stopped changing gears and when trying to change gears it sounded awful and was very rough. Sheehy Ford said it was the torque converter and found numerous office issues with in the transmission. Repairs were $5k. Thank goodness for Ford customer support( my awesome rep Kiara) who provided financial help for the repairs. I have lots of articles about the same issue and am shocked that the SE model wasn’t included in the recall.
Canister Purge Valve (CPV)” in this vehicle malfunctioned before reaching 75k, becoming stuck in an open position, which could create an excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system. Resulting in check engine low speed stalling and gas tank vacuum
My Daughters Words: In all my life we have owned ford vehicles, and never in my 18 years have I experienced a situation such as I have with the 2017 ford fusion my mother purchased after our 2018 car accident. In the past year I have become the primary driver of the fusion. At first nothing seemed to be wrong, a simple check engine light. I immediately went to the local AutoZone and used the code checker to see what the light was signaling. The code stated a misfire in cylinder 2, so we took it to Shealy's auto in Cayce for a deeper look and spark plug replacement. After Mr. Shealy and his team replaced the coil, and the spark plugs all was fine for a few days. We received the car back and two days later the check engine light returned. This prompted a swift return to Mr. Shealy where he re-checked the code and lightly examined the state of the engine. Mr. Shealy turned the vehicle into the on position and ran the code checker, after receiving the same misfire as before he opened the hood and partially removed the plastic cover over the engine. After confirming his technicians had replaced the proper coil, and all spark plugs, Mr. Shealy cleared the code and sent me on my way. 3 days later the car began running slightly warm, then violently throwing the code, overheat wildly, turning off electronic to reduce engine heat, and rethrowing the cylinder misfire when examined by the mechanic.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while the gear selector was in the park (P) position, the gear indicator displayed the neutral position instead. Also, while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. On one occasion while driving over a railroad track, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the transmission shift cable bushing had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 90,800.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated upon reversing on a roadway, she depressed the brake pedal and shifted into drive, but the vehicle failed to respond and would not move. The contact stated that the vehicle remained in the middle of the road blocking traffic. There were several unknown warning lights illuminated. An independent mechanic arrived at the scene and diagnosed that the shifter cable bushing had detached. The independent mechanic tied a cable around the cable bushing and he was able to drive the vehicle back into the parking space. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the shifter cable bushing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the vehicle was out of warranty and the VIN was not included in a recall associated to the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 66,758.
3/22/22 Check engine light illuminated and had cylinder 3 misfire code P0303. This was around 4 PM. Car was driven home and sat in driveway until 8 PM. Went to go pick up dinner, and rough idle began and interior heat was not working at all. CEL was still illuminated but car was driving fine. Did notice a sort of "vinegar" type of smell that quickly went away after driving. 3/23/22 Remote started vehicle to go to work and then I realized billows of white/blueish smoke were coming out of the exhaust. Ran outside and shut the vehicle off. Towed to McGovern Ford of Framingham in Framingham, MA. Complete engine failure due to coolant leaking into the cylinder. This all happened very quickly. The second the engine light came on, I scheduled the first available appointment on April 18, 2022. Less than 24 hours later it resulted in complete engine failure. There were no warning indicators other than the check engine light. This is a known manufacturing defect on Ford's part and they have yet to support their customers in resolving this issue. I have a 2017 Ford Fusion, with 63,000 miles on the clock, and it was purchased as a certified pre-owned in December of 2020. It has the 2.0L 4 cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine. McGovern Ford has no loaner vehicles available until the April 18th date, and Ford/warranty company will not cover a rental cost. I need a vehicle to commute to and from work, and now I am without a vehicle for the foreseeable future due to a manufacturing defect k
Issue with Sync 3. Major concern is the vehicle is equipped with a safety feature if there is an accident. 911 Assist is a SYNC feature that can call for help if you are involved in an accident and are unable to make a call yourself. 911 Assist works with SYNC 3 to alert emergency responders when there is an accident and relays important information such as the type of crash that occurred, the number of seat belts that were being used, and whether an airbag has deployed. The APIM/Sync 3 is malfunctioning on the vehicle where there is no GPS and the phone does not connect. This "safety" feature is useless with the APIM not functioning correctly in the event of an accident. Without GPS, emergency responders would not have a location and without phone connection, this could be a tragic result. The dealer has not not been confirmed or inspected to date as I had to make a service appointment.
Trunk randomly opens. Sometimes the car is started, sometimes it’s not. Happens whether in gear or not.
On 2/13/2022 while in Orlanda Florida only at @ 29K miles, engine light came on steady, but with no rise in temp - Dealer told me to drive it home (Chicago) it went out, then later came on solid again running rough, with leaking fuel and coolant inside and outside, and burning smoking exhaust and at strong smell of fuel everywhere = Fire hazard. Another delaer replaced long-block and told me it was a known issue found on an internal Ford Tech Serv Bullettin they were not allowed to give or show me. Should have been recalled.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently hesitate upon depression of the accelerator pedal without warning while in either in the drive (D) or reverse (R). The contact initially took the vehicle to a dealer where she was informed that there were no recalls associated with the VIN and was offered no assistance. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where an extensive diagnostic test was performed and it was discovered that the torque converter had failed and needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V427000 (Power Train) which she linked to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that her vehicle was not included in the recall; she was then referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle had been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000. ADDED COMMENT: Before the complete break of the transmission, I was noticing some hesitation with changing gears and going dead from a stop. Going down a hill on coast the back of the car made a roaring sound. At these moments, the car gear shift would be slightly hard to turn to park or drive. The transmission would also seem to slip. NOTE: The actual odometer was 189293 when the issue happened and repaired. Even though this was not on the recall list, it should be added because I experienced the same issue with my transmission as the others. I have attache

The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000.
The lug nuts on the wheels have "swelled" so that the wheels cannot be removed in an emergency for replacement. This problem is well known and was pointed out to me a a danger when I had my wheels rotated. The shiny metal covering the steel lug nut separates preventing the lug nut wrench from fitting and allowing for removal of the lug nut. 2017 Ford Fusion Energy Titanium

Power Steering became difficult to turn and handle while driving, this just suddenly happened without warning, my Son's safety was at risk by not being able to handle the steering, shortly after the Steering Assist Fault warning light came on, Service Traction Advance warning light and Hill Assist not working light came on. He shut the car off for about 10 mins and restarted the same lights are on. He is unable to drive it due to the steering is so hard. About 2 weeks prior to the above incident, transmission went out (it was repaired). Waiting to hear back from warranty company

My gas tank does this sucking noise and it's been fixed once but it keeps having this same issue and cuts my car off. It takes 15 to 30 minutes before it starts up again. When I looked up the issue I noticed other for fusions had been having the same problems.
Got gas and put car in drive and the shift knob went to park automatically . Tried to put car in drive again and same result happened. The 🔧 picture showed on my dash and I research oned it and found it was the bushing on shift cable had broke. The car was totally disabled from driving. The 2016 fusion had recall on this but I have a 17 and the Ford dealership is not finding a current recall for the bushing my car.
Coolant is leaking inside the engine and is contaminating oil. Noticed it during oil change. There are others in online forums with the same issue over many years to current. This is a huge issue as there is a flaw in the engine design concept and the only fix is to replace the engine or a majority of the engine.
THE CAR STALLED A FEW TIMES WIHILE ON MY WAY HOME WITH NO WARNING HAD TO RESTART THE VEHICLE SO AS I NEEDED TO ACCELERATE OR SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE WOULD START SHUDDER AND JERK AS IT FELT LIKE IT WAS SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. I HAD TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY HOUSE LOOKED UP ISSUES IT SAID IT MAY BE TRANSMISSION SO THEN I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A INDEPENDENT MECHANIC BUSINESS AND WAS INFORMED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALER THAT THERE WERE 2 RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH MY VEHICLE THE RECALLS WERE THROUGH THE NHTSA VEHICLE SAFETY REPORTS. (POWER TRAIN) AND (TORQUE CONVERTER). HOWEVER MY VEHICLE WAS THE 1.5 VERSION AND WAS HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS AS THE 2.1 VERSION BEING COVERED THROUGH THE VEHICLE RECALLS. SINCE MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED I DID NOT HAVE IT REPAIRED. THEY INCLUDED BOTH ISSUES IN THE QUOTE WAS OVER 6000 DOLLARS BUT LESS IF ONE OF THE PROBLEM. THIS WAS IN JUNE/2020 and the car had 97 k miles on it.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
