TRUCK STEERING STARTED WOBBLING OUT OF CONTROL AT 60 TO 65 MPH AFTER RUNNING OVER A SMALL POT HOLE ON FREEWAY. COULD NOT GAIN CONTROL OF TRUCK. IT FORCE ME INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC. I ALMOST HAD A HEAD ON CRASH INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY FORD (VERY DANGEROUS.) I AM AFRAID TO LET WIFE DRIVE THIS VERY EXSPENSIVE VEHICLE. (OVER $80K). FORD MUST DO SOMETHING BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS ONLINE ABOUT IT. THEY JUST WILL NOT DO ANYTHING OR DO A PROPER REPAIR
2019 Ford F-250 SD complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2019 record →
When hitting a bump or hole in the road, sometimes the tires and steering wheel start to shake violently. I have to slow down considerably before the shaking stops. After that, the truck runs normal until I hit another hole or bump. What happens is identical to the "death wobble" experienced with Ford F250.
Upon exiting from the highway at an approximate speed of 55mph in my 2019 Ford F250, I experienced a SEVERE case of what is commonly known as the "death wobble." I was essentially unable to control the vehicle in both braking and steering capacities, so much so that we ended partially in the grass median before regaining safe control. This again happened on the return trip home. So far I have been unable to obtain what I feel like is a satisfactory answer from the Ford dealership from whom I purchased the vehicle. In a 2 year old truck with under 50,000 miles I feel that this (especially being a known issue) should be a recalled item. I have never had a vehicle that I feel this unsafe driving in. The amount of jarring we experienced and the fact that I had little to no control at highway speeds is EXTREMELY unnerving.
When driving and you go over a slight bump in the road it makes your truck shake tremendously. I do not know if it is the suspension trying to over-correct it self but it is bad. When looking this issue up I have seen it called the Ford F250 "death wobble". I have yet to have this happen at speeds less than 50mph so this could possibly lead to a serious accident. I have made a video which I can submit for evidence (it is a MP4 file format). There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to when it will happen or how long it last.
I was driving my F250 Super Duty at a highway speed of 76 mph with the cruise set. Truck has just over 21K miles and is a 2019 model. I drifted slightly onto the rumble strip of the highway and the truck went into the Ford Death Wobble. It is the first and only time it’s happened since buying the truck new. This happened on Monday 1/24/2022. It was shocking how violently the steering started shaking! I had to slow down to 35 mph before it stopped. I plan to contact my local dealer (where I purchased new) to set up service to report and address. However after reading about this ongoing issue I felt compelled to report the issue on your site. Most everything I’m reading reports Ford has yet to put out a recall to properly address. However I did find a TSB that I will reference with the dealer when I take it in. My truck is still under remainder of factory warranty and has not had any modifications or aftermarket parts installed since purchasing it new. Tires/wheels and all suspension components are what came with on it at time of purchase. Very frightening experience!
While driving down the interstate, at approximately 70 mph, the front suspension started to wobble to the point that it was almost uncontrollable. Once the vehicle was slowed to approximately 50 mph, the wobble stopped. This vehicle has 28,000 miles & this is a condition that has just started in the last 30 days.
2019 F-250 adaptive steering malfunction. The truck has 49000 miles. I was reversing from a parking lot and as I shifted gears to drive and turn to get straight to move forward, my steering adaptive light came on the dash and my steering shifted 90 degrees to the left. Driving to the dealership with a toddler was frightening. This is a serious safety hazardous. Ford should issue a recall, but does not.
At 60 mph, vehicle front end occasionally starts shaking violently (death wobble) after bump in road. Have to slow down or stop to correct the wobble. Loss of control of the vehicle. I have heard of the problem on same type f250 in the past. No warnings before issue occurs.
My tailgate has opened on its own twice in the last few weeks. Once while parked and locked in a parking lot. The second time I was driving while pulling a trailer and the tailgate bounced on the trailer jack for over an hour.
Truck shakes and wobbles violently if a bump or transition in the road is hit at 50mph or greater. Truck has less than 13K miles on it , sits at stock height and tires have not been changed
When truck hits certain rough areas of the road the steering wheel will begin to oscillate violently and the truck will shake(death wobble). This will continue until you slow down to around 20 mph. The dealer the truck was purchased from was notified of the situation but can not get me in for at least a month. This has only happened when traveling in a straight line but if did occur in a curve I do not think I would be able to control the vehicle. This puts occupants of my vehicle as well as surrounding vehicles in danger. For now I do not feel safe driving this vehicle so it will be parked until the dealer can do something about it. After researching this it seems that this death wobble is a common occurrence with this vehicle and the manufacture has not done much to remedy the situation. i do have video of this happening but am unable to upload due to size restrictions.
The front suspension and steering becomes unstable and uncontrollable at highway speeds when uneven pavement is encountered. There is a vibration and a side to side motion of the steering wheel that does not stop until the vehicle is stopped. This issue was first reported to the NHTSA, and the manufacturer through the dealer Santa Margarita Ford, Ranch Santa Margarita California in early 2021. At that time components of the front suspension were replaced by Ranch Margarita Ford under warranty. Now, less than 12 months later, the problem has returned, the vehicle has less than 36,000 on it and is still under factory warranty. In January 2022 the vehicle was taken to Lake Elsinore Ford, Lake Elsinore California, where failure of the same front suspension parts were noted and replaced under warranty. This is unacceptable to experience the failure of these parts on annual basis. The vehicle is uncontrollable when the parts fail.
Loss of steering and uncontrollable shaking/ oscillation of front end suspension components when hitting small bump at 55 mph. No warning light or notification of this prior to happening. Phoned dealership they will be inspecting truck.
Driving down the highway doing somewhere between 75-80. Hit a small bump in the road and then it felt like the front end of my truck exploded. The steering wheel started violently jerking and the whole truck was shaking from the inside out. I held as tight as I could to stay inside my lane since I was surrounded by many vehicles travel long as fast as me. I slowed down as fast as I could and was able to get the truck to the shoulder. I went out to look and see if I hit something or if my tires had exploded and could find nothing wrong. I got back in the truck and checked my dash indicators and tire pressure and everything was fine. So I started to drive on the shoulder to see if I could keep going. Everything seemed fine so I got back on the highway and headed home. Maybe 4-5 miles later I was doing about 60 and the same thing happened but even worse. I’m really lucky I was able to keep control. I pulled over and rested the truck then took a side street and went 30 or under home. Upon getting home I messaged my friend about what happened and he sent me a bunch of links about the ford death wobble. I watched the videos and this is exactly what happened to me. I’m furious that ford isn’t being made to address this. If I had my kids in the car or was otherwise not strong enough to hold that steering wheel In place I wouldn’t be here typing this tonight. I’ll be taking the truck to the dealer in the morning but anything short of them replacing each and every component in this sys
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the electronic tailgate opened without warning. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the same local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The mechanic informed the contact that the key fob button might have been opening the tailgate. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was informed not to drive with the key fob in his pocket. The approximate failure mileage was 12,500. After last servicing done by Apple Ford I received a phone call from their customer service on a bad review I gave with the safety issue with the tailgate open while driving. What Apple Ford found out from their regional Manager was that the tailgate can be opened with the key fob while the truck is moving from 0 mph to 3.1 mph. I tested this and my finding were as follows: (1st test) Sat in truck while it running, and in Park. Pressed tailgate open on Key fob and tailgate would not open. (Test 2) While sitting in truck with it running and foot on brake pedal, I put truck in Drive and pressed tailgate open on Key Fob and tailgate opened. (Test 3) While in track and it's running, I put into Drive and start to move forward (between 1 and 2 mph). As the truck started roll, I pushed the Tailgate
After going over a rough patch of road, the steering wheel began to violently shake. Causing difficulty keeping the truck in my lane. I waited briefly for it to stop but it wouldn’t. I pulled to the shoulder and began to slow down. Around 10 miles per hour the shaking finally went away. Ford has recalled the steering damper. This repair has already been done on this truck but did not resolve the issue. After doing my own research this is not the underlying issue that causes this problem, but Ford will not take the responsibility to do anything else for me.
While driving at approximately 65 mph on a highway under ordinary conditions and on a relatively flat road, unprompted by any driving event, the truck started violently shaking. The steering wheel was shaking uncontrollably at the same time. The passenger reached for the grab bar to hold on to in fear as it felt like the vehicle was out of control. The event lasted approximately 30-60 seconds and seemingly randomly, stopped after the vehicle slowed down slightly. No warning lights or messages came on before, during, or after the event.
I have had in excess of 15 incidents where my truck upon hitting a bump in the road the front right tire began to go into what is referred to as a "death wobble". I took my truck in to have it repaired. The wobble stopped for approximately 2 weeks and then the left tire began doing the same thing. On Dec, 31st driving from Stockton to LA I hit an uneven spot in the highway when I was between a semi truck and a concrete barrier. It caused the semi truck to swing wildly out of control as he swerved to avoid my vehicle as it went into a death wobble sending me withing inches of his cab. My rear finder struck the concrete barrier causing damage to the rear panel. My brother and I could have easily been killed. Ford refuses do do a real on this vehicle and it is risking lives. Additionally my brother in law has the same truck with the same issue. I will never buy a Ford ever again.
UNKNOWN While driving at highway speed when a mild bump is hit in the road the front end starts to wobble violently first happened around 35000 miles and now is so bad the vehicle is not safe to driver at highway speed
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while driving at 62 MPH, the front end of the vehicle inadvertently started shaking violently. The contact stated that the vehicle continued to shake increasingly, causing him to almost lose control of the steering wheel. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact immediately depressed the brake pedal and veered to the side of the road. The contact stated that he exited the vehicle and looked around but could not determine the cause of the failure. The contact notified the dealer of the failure and scheduled an appointment for diagnostic testing. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V576000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 14,000.
While accelerating on the entrance ramp to the freeway, which is free of potholes, or bumps, the front end of the truck began bouncing up and down violently. I was traveling approximately 50 mph. I immediately braked and the bouncing ceased. Luckily there were no cars behind me at that moment. I bought this truck used about 2 years ago with about 34000 miles on it. I do not know if the previous owner experienced this. It now has 50000 miles, and that was the first and only time so far my wife or I have experienced that problem. This problem could definitely lead to a complete loss of steering control. Luckily I was only going about 50 mph and not on a curve, and nobody behind me. I have this vehicle scheduled for service at Elder Ford of Romeo on Dec 27 2021. They have indicated that it might be a stabilizer bar.
I get a death wobble to where I have to come to almost a complete stop. Even on the interstate
The following has happened twice with the truck. While driving down the highway at @55 -65 mph the truck started shaking violently and the steering wheel starting shaking back and forth after driving over an uneven section of the highway. I was able to slow down and pull over until the shaking stopped. The dealership looked at it and decided that the damper was bad. The first time it happened was at about 60K miles and the 2nd time was at 95k. There is no warning before this happens.
My truck has ~31k miles. On 12/15/2021 I was driving on the interstate at highway speed. A few hours into my trip the front end of my vehicle, suddenly and without warning, began to bounce violently. My ability to steer the vehicle was severely compromised. I almost hit the median wall. I was finally able to get the vehicle to the shoulder and out of the roadway. My first thought was that both front tires had burst. The violent shaking did not stop until the vehicle was at a complete stop. I got out and did a visual inspection of all four tires. They were fine. I did a visual inspection of the steering structures looking for something "loose". It seemed OK. I continued down the interstate and everything seemed ok. I had no clue what happened. After about 10 minutes, the same thing happened again. I did the same inspection again. Finding nothing, I continued to my home, driving below highway speeds with my emergency flashers on. Subsequent research by me revealed that I had a "Death Wobble", a defect in the steering mechanism that Ford has known about for years. There's even a class action lawsuit. Of course, none of Ford's agents/dealers disclosed this defect when I was buying this vehicle. For some reason, Ford hasn't issued a recall for this defect. A call to my local Ford dealer revealed that the service department, the "advisor" immediately diagnosed the problem. Ford has issued an extended warranty, but unfortunately, the authorized "fix" is inadequate and only temporari
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-250. The contact stated that after he had parked his vehicle at a campsite, he had noticed that the heat shield was hanging off his vehicle. The contact then called the dealer and made an appointment to have the heat shield replaced. The contact was also informed that the heat shield had rubbed against the driveshaft which resulted in minor damage; however, the dealer determined that the vehicle was safe to be driven. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had been repaired. Recently, the contact discovered a recall for 2021 Ford F-150 vehicles which he linked to the failure; NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V986000 (Power Train, Structure) however, neither the VIN nor the Year/Make/Model were included. The failure mileage was 16,566.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the trailer hitch bolt lock that connected a trailer to a nearby truck detached and crashed into his vehicle's front bumpers. The air bags failed to deploy. An unknown warning light illuminated. The contact decelerated but continued to drive the vehicle. The contact did not sustain any injuries. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed for the air bags failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000.
The malfunction was receiving "Death Wobble" on three occurrences in less than a 24 hour period driving less than 50 miles in total. This is a safety issue to all passengers and other drivers on the road due to inability to steer and control the vehicle safely. The problem has been confirmed by the Manufacturer as "death wobble" or "vehicle shimmying". The vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer and identified as the problem of "death wobble" There are no indications prior to this malfunction occuring.
I was driving at 55 mph when all of a sudden I felt like if i had both of my front tires blown out, it started shaking uncontrollable and I almost flipped my truck from the shaking. while ding some research i guess this is called the death wobble and i am not the only one being affected. luckily i was able to control my truck but this could have caused a huge accident. Dealership told me that they would not cover my truck as this was normal with ford trucks. while i visited the dealership there where two other gentleman with the same issue.
While traveling down the road at hit small bump.Steering wheel starting shaking violently felt as if whole front end was bouncing up and down. No warning lights or anything Had to let off accelerator and slow to 35 mph before it stopped. Happened to wife before after going over bridge. Took it to dealership they won't be able to look at til next week.
Tail gate automatically opened and tail gate dropped multiple times while driving. It was raining when it happened
Driving my F250 with 20k miles. Going about 60-65 mph on the highway. Traffic slows ahead so I apply light to medium pressure on the brakes and the steering wheel starts shaking violently. Pressing the brake harder or none at all had no effect. It stopped shaking so bad once under about 40. Very scary. I heard about this but have never experienced it. I have a message into my dealer, but now that I read online about all the complaints, this is a very serious safety issue and should be addressed. These are way too heavy of a vehicle to be on the road with this type of safety issue. Please look into it.
Death wobble
While driving on the highway at 83 mph (80 mph posted speed limit), my 2019 Ford F250 began to violently "wobble" and vibrate to the extent it was quite difficult to control the vehicle. I was in the far left lane and had to brake and maneuver through high speed traffic to get to the shoulder to stop. The violent wobbling did not reside until I was almost to a complete stop.
Traveling on i90 at 70 mph hit a slight bump in the road and the steering wheel started vibrating violently to the point I couldn't control the truck. My life flashed before me!!! Luckily traffic seen what had happened and back off. Truck is at fugate ford at this time.
Driving westbound on I-10 east of Houston Texas, near Beltway 8. I was in the left lane. I apparently hit a small bump in the road. My truck instantly began to become impossible to control. My steering wheel was shaking back and forth uncontrollably. My entire truck was shaking, almost like it was having a seizure. It was almost violent. I tried to hold control of the wheel, while trying to slow down. I was unable to do either with any effectiveness in a quick fashion. It was as if my wheels were not making contact with the road, possibly bouncing up and down. I hit the brakes and tried to steer into the shoulder to avoid traffic nearby. It was difficult as the wheels were not making contact with the road to steer and they were not allowing the brakes to properly slow the vehicle as they were not touching the road for very long. I was eventually able to slow the vehicle and enter the shoulder and get the vehichle to stop shaking. I honestly thought I was about to flip over or have a significant wreck as I had very little control of the vehichle.
I was driving on the freeway (75mph) and my truck went into a death wobble. The whole truck was shaking like all 4 tires went flat. I immediately tried to slow the vehicle down and pull over. Luckily there was no traffic and I did not cause an accident. Once the vehicle slowed down to about 20mph it smoothed out and no longer wobbled. This happened on the 16th of November and hasn't happened since.
While driving my 2019 F250 (which has just over 6,000 total miles on it at this time) at highway speed towing an empty trailer (which I have had for several years and towed with several vehicles before) the truck started shaking violently! I could hardly control it and had to dramatically slow way down to get the violent shaking to stop. This happened 4 times on two trips in the last couple weeks with two different trailers. It is definitely the truck and not the trailers. Fortunately no cars were immediately next to me or the results would have been tragic. The truck is essentially new, has been stored indoors all the time, very well maintained, no accidents or abuse so no reason it would be having any issue much less such a severe one.
Driving at posted limit on I55, left front hit small bump in road and front end shook violently for about 20-30 seconds. Steering damper replaced 5 days later, per TSB 21-2173, but no root cause indicated. Concern that this may lead to injury until fully repaired.
16,000 miles . Experienced a significant shaking wobble after hitting rough patch on bridge at 70 mph. Had to slow almost to a stop for it to subside. Has happened 2 more times in last week. Very scary and dangerous. Someone will die because of this.
Violent shaking of the steering wheel occurs randomly. Sometimes applying brakes , other time when hitting a bump in the road
On 12/5/21 - at approximately 11:00am, I driving my 2019 Ford F-250 towing a utility trailer and an ATV. My speed at the time was 60 mph, and I have 41,211 miles on the truck. As I started to make a lane change the steering wheel started to violently shake, and the entire front end of the truck started to violently shake as well. It was all I could to do keep from crashing into another vehicle. Fortunately, I was able to slow down and pull off of the roadway before causing a traffic accident. It was an extremely stressful and scary situation! When I arrived home I googled the situation I had experienced to see if there might be an explanation as to why this had occurred. I was shocked to learn that what I had experienced (“The Death Wobble”) had been well documented, that Ford had known about the problem for years, and there was a class action lawsuit had been filed. I am making this complaint hoping either a recall is issued or Ford will do the right thing and correct the problem ASAP.
This is to report another incident of what is now known as the Ford Death Wobble. Despite Ford's denial of this condition existing, it is real. My truck has only 18K miles on it and I experienced the issue three times while driving on the freeway yesterday, Dec 02, 2021. It is terrifying and if one of my daughters or other family member had been driving, I am scare to think what the result might have been. There is much information about this issue on the internet, though I am not sure how much is fact or opinion. What I do know is that it happened to me and it is real and serious. I make this claim in part as documentation in case there is a serious accident related to this obvious defect. I have an appointment with a local dealership tomorrow, Dec 04, 2021 to see if the issue can be fixed. I will make clear to them the issue, the recording of my efforts to have the issue addressed by Ford and the documentation of this issue. I implore the NHTSA to take action to demand Ford address this serious risk. I encourage you to share this complaint with Ford officials. I want to be on public record about this issue.
On 11/16/2021, at approx. 1 pm, I merged onto a major interstate freeway from an on-ramp, in a westbound direction. The weather was a clear, sunny day and the roadway surfaces were dry and level. I accelerated to approx. 65 miles-per-hour as I merged onto the far right lane (slow lane), the roadway surface became a little uneven and contained several ripples. My 2019, Ford F-250 Super Duty, 4WD truck began to shake violently in a side-side motion. Fortunately, there wasn't any approaching vehicle traffic behind me for quite some distance. I held firmly to the steering wheel and took my foot off the accelerator. I steered the truck in a diagonal direction (west by northwest) toward the north shoulder of the freeway. As the truck slowed, I applied the brakes gently and intermittently. I reached the shoulder and parked the truck. I inspected the truck for any obvious deficiencies, and I did not see any. I made an appointment with the closest Ford dealership, and on 11/26/2021, the dealership replaced the steering stabilizer. The Ford dealership's service advisor refused my request to give me possession of the replaced stabilizer stating it is Ford's policy to keep parts replaced under a warranty replacement. My truck had approx. 28, 200 miles at the time. No one was injured, and no crash occurred in this incident of, "Sustained Steering Wheel Oscillation." This was the only occurrence of sustained steering wheel oscillation I have experienced.
This 2019 Ford F250 has a classic case of the "Death Wobble". Anytime the vehicle is travelling over 50 mph and hits a bump the truck shakes violently. It shakes bad enough to throw the contents of the door pockets throughout the interior. It is extremely dangerous when this occurs travelling on the crowded freeways of South Florida where I live and work. This is not an unknown condition of Ford trucks. A simple google search produces pages and pages of documented incidents.
While traveling at 65 MPH, a severe shake in the front end caused me to leave the highway and continued to shake until I came to a complete stop. Vehicle has been taken to a dealer 3 times and is still not repaired. Very dangerous to drive.
Death Wobble ... hit an uneven portion of the road and my truck began to shake violently. Quickly reduced speed and things returned to normal
While driving down the highway my truck started to violently wobble. Once I slowed down it went away. This has happened a few times now and I understand it has been revered to as the death wobble.....
Vehicle begins violently shaking as described as the Death Wobble at highway speeds in excess of 50mph, after crossing onto uneven pavement, or driving through a rough patch in roadway, or bridge expansion joint. Steering wheel vibrates back and forth and steering becomes unresponsive and speed must be decreased immediately to regain control of the vehicle.
On >10 occasions when driving down the highway and hitting a bump the truck stops to violently shake, is difficult to control and continues to shake until I reduce my speed to below 25mph level which is dangerous on the highway. I have reported this issue to the dealer once before with no resolution. They said they could t find a problem. The first occurrence was last year when the vehicle was not one year old yet and has continued since then u til the last occurrence on 11/26/2021.
I was driving my Ford F-250 SuperDuty at 65 mpg on a 4 lane hwy (posted speed 65) when the truck suddenly, without warning, shaking and bouncing violently. The jostling was so violent my head hit the top of the cab and my glasses were bouncing on my face. The steering wheel was shaking but I was able to get to the side of the road and stop. It was the worst, most violent shaking I have ever experienced. I thought my wheels were coming off. My head, neck, and back are sore today from the incident. The truck gave no warning, no warning lights, sounds, etc. to indicate what was about to happen. It shook so hard my vision was doubled. *I do NOT know what failed or malfunctioned. It appeared to be wheels, steering, suspension? *This put me at grave risk of losing control, overturning, rolling and getting killed. It put others on the highway at risk because I could have caused them to wreck by the actions of my uncontrollable truck. I could have killed myself and others on the highway. *I have not had the opportunity to take this back to a dealer yet. *No one has inspected it yet. *No warning lights, no sounds, no indication of impending problem. Ford should NOT allow this to happen on ANY vehicle. This is a death trap and I am afraid to continue driving it. DEATH TRAP!

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
