This complaint with the NHTSA is to bring to your attention malfunctioning Sync 3 systems caused by an Over the Air (OTA) update Ford has pushed out to vehicles without permission from owners that has caused the Sync Systems to malfunction. Backup camera screen view while driving in a forward direction and reocurring pop-up screens which require driver interaction are two primary concerns. Loss of handsfree phone and navigation functionality are secondary concerns. I believe an investigation by the NHTSA is justified. Ford issued the software update that broke my Sync 3 system. Ford has stated that no software update is currently available to fix it. Replacing the APIM will fix the Sync 3 system. Vehicles under warranty are eligible for a no-charge APIM replacement. Vehicles out of warranty, like mine, are subject to +$1000 Ford repair charge. I believe Ford is responsible to repair all Sync 3 systems that they broke. These repairs should be made regardless of warranty. This likely warrants a recall by Ford as soon as possible. Here is a link where the F-150 Community has been discussing this issue since April 2023: https://www.f150forum.com/f118/sync-3-memory-issue-538739/index34/ I have logged the issue with Ford directly as well. They are not offering to help me resolve the issue because I am out of warranty.

Transmission not shifting smoothly, it lurches into gear when accelerating or decelerating. There have been times where I’ve almost had power failure. My safety was put at risk when trying to merge out onto the highway across traffic and my truck would not shift out of first gear and felt like it was about to stall out before finally kicking into 3rd gear…and I could have been hit by oncoming vehicles. This has happened numerous times and now it occurs every time i am shifting out of first gear. I’m taking the vehicle in to be inspected at automation Ford on July 18th 2023. The vehicle has not been inspected by police, or insurance. There have been 0 warning lights or check engine lights to date. My truck backup camera is not working. It goes black or distorted to where you can’t see anything behind you. It identical to a recall on other 2019 Ford F150s. But my truck is not on that recall. If the problem is the exact same, shouldn’t it be fixed through the recall as well?

In March of 2022, Ford launched a TSB campaign for its F150 model trucks spanning a few years. The TSB was for a Cam Phaser issue and the company offered an extended mileage warranty with a tiered coverage chart based on your current miles while experiencing the problem. The campaign ended January of 2023. I own a 2019 F-150 and my truck began having the issues under the TSB in April of 2023. When I brought the issue to the Ford dealership, I was then informed of the open TSB (TSB's are not made public, but rather opened up for mechanics use to easily diagnose an issue). I was told that due to my mileage as well as missing the 'expiration of the campaign' by just a few months, I would have to cover the cost of the repair. After battling with Ford, I was able to gain some assistance from the dealership towards the cost of the repair. My truck was dropped off to a Ford dealership on May 8th, 2023 and is still there awaiting parts for this KNOWN issue. There are roughly 40,000 parts for this issue that are on backorder. I was updated yesterday that the parts are still 2-3 weeks out from being available. Not having my vehicle for close to 3 months now and still being expected to pay $750 for a repair with an active TSB is absurd. At what point does this issue constitute a recall? I am writing and requesting that this issue be a known recall to the affected trucks. For a consumer to have to pay for a cost that is out of their control, and a known/acknowledged issue by the dealer/c

After being park for over 6 hours, Truck spontaneously started to smoke, sparked, and caught fire at 1253am. This ignition was inside the engine compartment on the passenger side. All was recorded on 24hr video monitoring and my truck was in stock condition without any aftermarket parts and no warning lights on. Incidentally my truck had just been routinely serviced with the past month by the dealership and all was fine. Within minutes the truck was engulfed in flames, my neighbors and I attempted to extinguish the flames until the fire company arrived within 6 minutes. Within this short less than 15 minute window the entire engine and cab was destroyed. If this truck was parked in a garage this incident would have been catastrophic. Luckily no one was injured and the prompt response of my neighbors and the fire company prevented this from catching my home on fire. The police and fire company reviewed the video and informed me to notify any safety board and The Ford company directly. In review this problem is not new and well document in the past. There are recalls in place for the same make and model vehicles with the same fire starting in the front passenger side. Unfortunately my VIN was not included in this recall.

Beginning 3 months ago, intermittently during in-town traffic driving, the vehicle will shut off. It happened about once a month. Three weeks ago when it did this, it said Low Charging System, so I took it to the dealer where purchased it. The Alternator tested Low, so it was replaced. Two weeks later, it died at a stoplight again & at Idle, then the Dash Message said Disengage Auto-Shut Off and Restart Engine. I called the dealer where purchased it & they came and got it. Transmission bucks and skips gears in the 800-2000rpm range. When acceleration applied in the rpm range given, it hesitates and then lurches forward . It also 'jumps' in a forward motion when starting in park on a level surface. I had the transmission software flashed by Ford last year which helped for 2-3 months only. It is getting worse. Ford now wants to charge to refresh the software again since the truck is out of warranty by 6 months.

Two instances of severe loss of transmission function occurred at highway speeds within the last 5 months. The first instance occurred on flat terrain (in Michigan) with no load in the bed of the truck. The second instance occurred in hilly terrain (Tennessee) with about 500 lbs. in the bed of the truck. In both instances the transmission started cycling/jumping between first and tenth gears and several gears in between. This cycling was very fast and repetitive. The driver was forced to quickly decelerate (remove foot from accelerator peddle, apply brakes) to maintain control and pull off the highway. It was noted in both instances that the transmission temperature had shot up to around 220 degrees F. The normal temperature for the transmission in this truck at highway speeds has been observed to be around 190 degrees F. In the second incident, the wiper functionality was lost; the wipers would only work at the highest speed. (The functionality of the wipers in the first incident was not determined.) In both instances the engine was shut off to allow the transmission temperature to cool down to within the range of 190 degress F. Once the the transmission cooled to this range, the truck could be driven because the transmission functioned properly. Also, proper wiper function was restored.

Constant transmission issues where the shifting between certain gears was not operating correctly. The dealership performed a number of what they called “Adaptive Relearns” to try and reset the computer but it only helped for a short period before the shifting went back into the same format where it would shift improperly. I’ve been having the same issue since before the Warranty was up. I finally made then drive my truck to check the issue and they agreed it was in fact most likely a mechanical issue. I received a quotation for $6k to remove and disassemble the transmission to address a possible sleeve in the CDF drum that may have moved. Now my truck is out of Warranty so it’s out of pocket to fix it. Had this been addressed properly when I brought it in originally, it would have been fixed under Warranty.

On July 14, 2022, I took my F150 to Ford and it was determined that the 10 speed transmission was going to need to be replaced. I had 60,400 miles on it when it starts having major malfunction going on in the Powertrain. At the time the transmission replacement was being done, it was Ford’s knowledge that the Cam phasers were not functioning correctly.. causing sudden jerk and knocking.. Cam Phasers we’re not replace last year nor looked at, even though I told them that there was sudden jerks happening. It was under warranty at that time (last year). Ford also knew that reprogramming the trucks software, does not correct any of the problems that they are having. Now at 70,000 miles I’m going back in to, Southwest Ford in Hudson Oaks, Texas, to get these parts replaced as soon as they are available. Automatic transmission malfunctioned. Loss of power between 3 (third) and 4 (forth) gears. When upshifting from 3 to 4 it will experience a loss of power, however it is not consistent and seems to happen randomly. Likewise while downshifting from 4 (forth) to 3 (third) the transmission will clunk and lock-up for a 1/2 sec while the engine rpm tries to match the downshift. This has caused a loss of traction from the rear wheels while decelerating when shifting from 4 to 3. Again it is not consistent and seems to happen randomly. Vehicle has been in for complaint of these issues and dealer noted it is normal and transmission adaptive shift table needed to be reset. However this did not fix the issue. Issue is still present. There are no warning lamps or fault codes. These issues began at about 6,000 miles. I am not at over 25,000 with no resolution. Vehicle details 2019 Ford F150 3.5L EcoBoost 4x4 Lariat with the 10R80 (10 speed) transmission. My 2019 F-150 has the 10-speed transmission which shifts erratically. Driving down the interstate the transmission goes into a "neutral mode" which greatly reduces the speed, thus nearly causing me to be rear-ended. When this happens, I've noticed the gear selection lights on the dash go from 10th gear to 1st gear during the "neutral mode". This has happened on numerous occasions. The last couple of times this has happened a "gear" light will display on the cluster. Shifting between 1-3 , 4-6, and 7-9 seems to shift very hard and erratic, sometimes missing gears. After purchasing my 2019 Ford F150 equipped with a V8 engine I noticed a loud knocking or tapping noise coming from the engine and a large consumption of oil happening. With no visible leaks I was putting about 1.5 to 2 quarts of oil a month in the engine to keep it filled. Loosing that much oil so fast could cause the engine to experience a catastrophic engine failure at any driving speed causing danger to me, my family, or other drivers on the road. Not to mention the environmental impacts caused by the engine burning so much oil so fast in possibly thousand of trucks across the country. I scheduled service with a Ford dealership. I have taken the truck in twice to have it looked at. Dealership has performed several service bulletins on it but it is still making a knocking and tapping noise and using excess amounts of oil. I have been told by ford dealership that they are aware of the problem and unable to determine if, or when, problem will be able to be fixed. This seems unacceptable knowing the truck is still under factory warranty.
