About 6 months ago, while driving my kids to school, the transmission aggressively downshifted causing the truck to skid momentarily. This occurred on the highway so the transmission was most likely in 6th gear. The event was so abrupt, it felt like it either switched into Park or 1st gear and felt like we hit something. A wrench icon appeared and the fan was abnormally loud so I pulled over and turned the truck off to see if there was any damage which there wasn't any. The truck wouldn't start so we were stuck on the side of a busy highway during morning rush hour traffic. When it finally started about 2 1/5 hours later, I hooked up a code reader which indicated codes P0706 and P0707. Ever since, this condition occurs after the truck's been driving for about 5-10 mins without exception. The truck seems to stay in the current gear that was engaged at the time that the wrench icon appears. So if the truck is a stop and the issue occurs, it'll be stuck in 1st and run at high rpm. If it happens when the gear is in 5th or 6th and you then come to a stop, it makes pulling out in traffic dangerous due to the lag while getting the truck up to speed. I've been out of work and couldn't spare the $1200 repair cost. I've had to avoid highways and speeds above 30 mph in fear of crashing or damaging the transmission. Even at low speeds, transmissions shifts are hard and abrupt so I'm concerned that there's transmission damage. There's a burning belt smell in the cabin so I'm also concerne

Past issue was when vehicle was in Tow/Haul mode it would down shift unprompted. Currently when you break hard it won’t downshift and stays in previous gear causing the inability to accelerate with out putting in park the back in drive. I have almost been hit twice on interstate while manually shifting. My truck is currently in a ford shop and they say I need a new transmission?? However there are no problems with transmission issued by computer.

Vehicle is a 2017 Ford F-150 equipped with the 5.0L engine and 6R80 automatic transmission. The transmission has developed repeated harsh and abnormal shifting behavior, primarily during upshifts between 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th gears. During these shifts, the vehicle lurches/kicks forward abruptly and feels as though it is driving over a bump or being struck from behind. Condition is more pronounced when transmission is cold and worsens significantly under load, including while towing or driving uphill. Issue has persisted despite transmission fluid service/triple flush, adaptive relearn procedure, and replacement of spark plugs/ignition coils to rule out engine-related causes. Independent Transmission Shop has inspected vehicle, confirmed abnormal transmission operation, and advised that internal transmission wear/failure is likely. Transmission fluid was reported to be excessively dark/dirty for mileage. No warning lights or transmission fault codes are currently present. The harsh and unpredictable shift behavior creates a safety concern because the vehicle can surge/lurch unexpectedly during acceleration, particularly when merging into traffic, climbing grades, or towing. Sudden driveline shock during gear changes may affect vehicle stability and driver control, especially in wet/low-traction conditions or while towing. Transmission remains installed in vehicle and is available for inspection upon request. Vehicle has been inspected by an independent transmission repair fa

At 90,181 miles, the 10R80 transmission in my 2017 Ford F-150 suffered a catastrophic internal failure. The vehicle exhibited violent, hard shifts between gears 2 through 4 with no check engine light or warning indicator, giving zero warning the drivetrain was failing. Sheehy Ford in [XXX] reproduced the condition. Their diagnosis on RO XXX: "HARSH 4-6 SHIFT-INTERNAL FAULT." Teardown revealed a fractured CDF drum with metal debris that migrated into the valve body. The dealer removed the transmission and performed a full overhaul, replacing the CDF drum, clutch cylinder, forward clutches, and valve body, and flushed the cooler and converter. Total cost: $6,846.30, entirely out of pocket. This is a serious safety defect. A fractured CDF drum can cause sudden loss of gear engagement, unexpected downshifts, or transmission lockup at highway speed, any of which can result in loss of vehicle control and severe risk of injury or death. I use this vehicle daily to transport my two young children (ages [XXX] and [XXX] ) to and from daycare. This defect endangered their lives, my life, and other motorists, all with no diagnostic warning. This failure is consistent with widespread defects in Ford's 10R80 transmission, currently the subject of class-action litigation. A transmission should not need a $7,000 overhaul before 100,000 miles. Ford is aware of this pattern and has failed to recall. I am filing to ensure NHTSA has a complete record of another 10R80 failure that directly endang

At 87,336 miles, my 2017 Ford F-150 (3.5L EcoBoost) would not start. The engine clicked and buzzed but failed to turn over, leaving me stranded with no warning. There was no prior check engine light. I brought the truck to Roy Hendrick Automotive in [XXX] (Invoice XXX, completed 03/05/2025). Their diagnosis determined the cam phasers and timing components had failed. The shop performed a full timing chain and cam phaser replacement, including both camshaft sprockets, timing chains, tensioners, timing chain guides, variable timing solenoids, water pump, seals, gaskets, and spark plugs. Total cost: $5,449.36, entirely out of pocket. This is a serious safety defect. Cam phaser failure in the 3.5L EcoBoost can cause catastrophic loss of engine timing, resulting in sudden engine stall or failure to start. A stall at highway speed, in an intersection, or while merging creates an immediate risk of collision, serious injury, or death. Even a no-start condition is a safety issue when it strands a driver in an unsafe location. I use this vehicle daily to transport my two young children (ages [XXX] and [XXX] ) to and from daycare. A sudden engine failure while driving with them in the vehicle could have had fatal consequences. Ford's 3.5L EcoBoost cam phaser failures are extensively documented, with numerous TSBs and owner complaints on file. An engine should not require over $5,000 in internal timing repairs before 100,000 miles. Ford has failed to issue a recall or provide an adequate

The vehicle experienced a sudden and violent downshift while driving, causing a severe jolt to the drivetrain. Following this incident, the transmission entered a 'Limp Mode' and remained stuck in 2nd gear, refusing to upshift to any higher gears. This made it impossible to maintain normal traffic speeds, creating a significant safety hazard on public roads. The vehicle is now effectively inoperable. A Ford dealer and Ford Corporate (Case on file) have confirmed this is related to Recall 26V237, but they stated that a software remedy will not be available until July 2026. This delay for an actively failed vehicle is unreasonable and poses a continuous safety risk.

The vehicle gets stuck in gear or "limp mode" and will then suddenly fix itself and switch into the correct gear intermittently. There is often a delay when the vehicle goes into limp mode and the service engine wrench light coming on, so you don't know it's happened until you lose the ability to accelerate. I was almost t-boned when this issue first appeared as I did not realize the vehicle was stuck in 4th gear. I was at a flashing yellow light waiting to turn left across traffic. When I saw a gap in the oncoming traffic I proceeded to make my turn only to realize the vehicle had very little acceleration. Because it was stuck in 4th gear it had virtually no acceleration from a stop. Thankfully the oncoming vehicles were paying attention and noticed my vehicle crawling through the turn otherwise I would have been hit. It also can get stuck in lower gears and not shift up, so when accelerating to get onto the highway it will remain stuck in 1st or 2nd gear and as a result drive very poorly at highway speeds. I brought this to a Ford dealership and they had the truck for 3 weeks and told me they couldn't reproduce it and bring it back to them when it was more consistent since it is a very intermittent issue. Even though I showed them my Ford app with over 100+ notifications that stated the issue and they were able to see the vehicle codes they told me there was nothing they could do. I took it to another dealer and their recommendations were: Replacement of Trans Internal Wiri

My vehicle is affected by Ford Recall 25S37 / NHTSA Recall 25V236 involving brake master cylinder leakage and loss of front braking performance. I took my Ford truck to a dealership on March 2, 2026, for the recall notice, but the dealer has been unable to obtain the required parts for more than six weeks. They report the parts are on back order with no estimated availability from Ford. This delay has left my vehicle with a known safety defect that increases stopping distance and crash risk. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to provide a free remedy within a reasonable time, and a six week delay exceeds that standard. I have spoken now twice with Ford, and they have not provided repair, alternative transportation, replacement, or refund options I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance because Ford has failed to provide a timely remedy for a safety critical defect, and I am unable to get the recall completed due to Ford’s parts unavailability.

Transmission issue? Hard clunk/jerk when approaching highway speed. Happens intermittently without throwing a code. Feels like it's trying to shift down into a low gear for no reason. One time it went into limp mode and there was a code p0116 for a transmission coolant temperature sensor. The sensor was replaced but the problem persists without a tripping a code.

I got a code P0722-00 it says something about a sensor and a molded lead frame in the transmission this is affecting how the truck shifts gears and the amount of gas it consumes and in some cases it says that it can go from speed 6 to 1 currently not using it until its fix but I am reporting it just incase a recall were to happen later on

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 75 MPH on the highway, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from 5th gear to 1st gear, and the rear wheels locked, and the vehicle slid. The vehicle then went into LIMP Mode but was still drivable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,000.

“The vehicle, a 2017 Ford F-150, is experiencing an active engine oil leak originating from the oil pan assembly. Upon inspection, the leak appears to be due to a defect in the oil pan sealing surface integrity. There is no evidence of external damage, impact, or improper maintenance that would otherwise explain the failure. The condition is consistent with a manufacturing defect, potentially involving improper gasket material, insufficient sealant application, or warping of the oil pan flange. Oil residue is visible along the oil pan perimeter and lower engine components, with active dripping observed after engine operation.” Safety Concerns: Leaking oil can hit hot exhaust components → potential smoke or fire hazard. Low oil = high risk of engine damage. Engine knocking/ticking. Vehicle has been inspected at a Ford Dealership with no resolve.

I've had the transmission replaced under fordprotect warranty and subsequently another torque converter and subsequent to that, a new program installed to repair low RPM Shudder. Under mild acceleration at interstate speeds (65 TO 75 mph) it now hunts for gears with random upshifts and downshifts while failing to maintain or increase speed which constitutes a safety hazard.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
