My 2018 Ford Edge is equiped with Ecoboost engine and as a result all these problems are occurring: Ford failed to disclose that these vehicles have a defect that causes coolant to leak into the engine’s cylinders, which can cause corrosion, oil dilution and contamination, and engine failure; and failed to disclose these defects create a safety risk, because the lack of coolant created by the leaks causes overheating and can result in the cylinder head cracking, total engine failure, and/or engine fires. Ford dealers have stated that I need a new engine.

I had a engine failure on the highway causing me to holt to a stop! Lucky it was not super busy and was able to get pulled over safely without getting hit or hitting someone.Turns out I have coolant leaking into my cylinder 3 causing it to fail. Ford tech said it wasn't anything I did wrong most of these motors are going out! If this is that big of a problem why is ford not taking it apon themselves to recall this. From what I am hearing this problem is happening to alot of people. They are making me pay out of pocket for the repairs which just seems crazy because it was nothing I did wrong.

I have approximately 53000 miles on my vehicle. The Engine light turned on end of Aug. So I took it to a service center. They said the message code was P306 & P0316. They inspected and said the cylinder is misfiring, coolant has gotten into the cylinder, and the gasket is mush. The engine is rough running and told me to take it to Ford, I will need a new engine. In searching this problem I found a TSB 22-2229 & an NHSTA 19-2208, 19-2172. Ford can't get me in until end of September to verify. I've found several references to this problem causing an engine fire, I also found a class action suit recently filed in California for this problem. Ford has not issued a recall for this problem and I don't understand. They redesigned the engine in 2021 as they knew it was a faulty design. I didn't know that. I don't have another vehicle to drive, meanwhile I'm making car payments on it. Ford won't provide a car for me to use. I don't want to drive my car with [XXX] knowing this problem could cause harm to me, them and others. Please advise. Earlier this year, I had a crack form in my engine block that resulted in coolant intrusion in the engine. This was a safety risk as it resulted in a complete failure of my engine, loss of all coolant and was a fire risk. Ford has had significant issues with this in multiple models and years, yet the 2018 Ford Edge continues to be excluded from these recalls. This issue did result in a recall in Canada and is pending a class action lawsuit on the 2018 Ford Edge. The lawsuit, entitled [XXX], et al. v. Ford Motor Company, is currently pending in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, Case No. [XXX] . I required 2 repairs to remedy this known safety issue that the NHTSA has yet to acknowledge or require Ford to address. All of this with 38,000 miles on the vehicle. I have seen this exact issue addressed in model years before and after 2018, but have yet to see progress on remediation for the 2018 year. I first noticed the sound of water running in the dash each time I started the car. At that time I don’t recall an engine light on. It would sound like bubbles and water running for 10 seconds or so and then it would go away. That lasted a while before I was driving home from work and on two consecutive mornings my car lost acceleration power. This is dangerous in that I have to cross traffic on a busy road and had I tried to go quickly between cars I definitely couldn’t have moved to get out of the way. Each time this happened I pulled over and restarted the car and was able to get home. While waiting for my appointment with ford my car overheated and I got an engine overheat prompt. This was in the middle of summer and I had my two kids in the car. I drove to an auto zone and my dad met me to help add more coolant. At first glance it looked low, but once he opened the cap it bubbled up to appropriate levels. So overall we didn’t add too much coolant. I took it into ford and they told me I had an engine coolant leak into the main block and I had to replace my entire engine out of pocket. My car was at ford for 30 days waiting for replacement and the installation.

My 2018 Ford Edge SEL AWD 2.0L Ecoboost just had a Long Block replacement due to a “Coolant Intrusion” into the engine. Got the vehicle back from the Ford dealership today. I had this car factory-built for myself in 2018, and I only have 28,000 miles on it! And GET THIS... the super-duper six-year extended Warranty I paid over $5,000 for when I bought the Edge expired just 5 WEEKS BEFORE THIS PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED. Talk about unfortunate timing! I have been reading on the internet about many, many people who are having the same problem with Ecoboost engines, due to a manufacturing defect that Ford has admitted to for certain makes/models/years with Ecoboost engines… and that the vehicles have caught on fire in some instances. Mind you, I have only taken my Edge to Ford dealerships. Like clockwork, I am VERY proactive about my car check-ups... and then some. I took it to the Ford dealership the day my "check engine" light came on (no other indications before that). I had my 1996 Ford Mustang convertible for 22 years before changing to this Edge, and that car still looked like new. I baby my cars. The day they told me what the problem was and that the Estimate was a $7,800 Long Block repair due to "Coolant Intrusion into the Engine", I looked it up on the internet and saw my same problem EVERYWHERE! This should have been a Recall. Is Ford waiting for people to die before they would do a Recall?

My vehicle experienced what many of the Ford vehicles have had occur in this year range regarding the EcoBoost engine. My 2018 Ford Edge, maintained by the dealership since purchase, equipped with the EcoBoost 2.0 engine had coolant leak into the number one cylinder. Once this happens, there is no repair besides to replace the engine. Ford knows there an issue, even the service person told me this happens a lot with this model, but there is no recall at this time. They want $7,800 to change the engine block. Ford changed the design by scoring channels between the cylinders in an ill conceived attempt to increase cooling. This bad design allows coolant to degrade head gasket leading to coolant intrusion into cylinders. Inevitably, this leads to engine failure. Apparently, Ford redesigned the Ecoboost 2.0 engine around 2020 to eliminate this issue. Ford has not recalled these engines and apparently refuses to fix the issue if the vehicle is out of warranty. The Ecoboost 2.0 engines with this bad design WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL. This issue is the direct result of Ford’s bad design making these engines unmerchantable. I know this has been reported many times to the NFTSA and should be a major recall for this engine.

Owner of a 2018 Ford Edge SEL 2.0 L Eco Boost, approx. 40,000 miles. Started experiencing a dip in RMP’s while idling. Check engine light came on. Vehicle was registering a “misfire”. Uncertain if it was spark plugs, coil pack and/or head gasket the computer was reset and vehicle was given back. Engine light appears AGAIN. This time, local repair shop opened the cylinders and discovered a small amount of coolant and/or oil. Cylinders were cleaned and vehicle was given back. AGAIN, engine light appeared 3rd time and made an appointment with Scarsdale Ford Service. At FORD Service, spoke to “Ralph.” Initially, was informed it might just need sparks plugs. (KNOWING THERE’s A FLAWED ENGINE DESIGN THAT ALLOWS COOLANT TO ENTER THE ENGINE BLOCK ERODING EVERYTHING. So much so, that FORD has issued a “technical service bulletin” BUT refuses to recall the engine). Later, was told the engine needs to be replaced and it would cost $10k for repair. Spoke to Ford Customer Service who only filed a “request” for “up to $5k in repairs” which is not guaranteed. Awaiting judgement from that. AND they placed a request for “buy back” from all the forms which I am reading. I can only expect to be offered up to $3k. This is unacceptable. No one buys a car and expects it to last less than 50k miles. Also, knowing the ongoing issues with specifically the 2018 2.0 L Eco Boost, why wasn’t i informed of this sooner? Yes, available for inspection. 2.0L Eco Boost engine leaking coolant into cylinder 1 due to a design defect 2015-2018 which has since been corrected. The only fix is a complete engine replacement. There is a recall for the Ford Fusion and Focus FOR THE SAME ISSUE; however, the Ford Edge 2.0L Eco Boost has not yet been added. There is a service bulletin addressing this issue requiring an engine block replacement: TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 2.0L EcoBoost - Coolant in Cylinders, White Exhaust Smoke And/or Illuminated MIL. An extensive internet search revealed widespread accounts of this issue, mostly after the manufacturer warranty had expired, leaving the customer responsible for engine replacement. Because this was deemed to be caused by a design defect (grooves were etched into the block to allow coolant between the cylinders which weakened the block, causing cracks, which allowed the coolant intrusion), I believe the existing recall should be expanded to include the 2015-2018 2.0L EcoBoost engine as well.

There was a cylinder wall breach causing coolant intrusion in to the engine. It’s issue is extremely common with the 2.0 ecoboost engines. My service engine light came on and I checked all fluids coolant was low and it was showing a misfire in cylinder #3. Replaced the park plug and added coolant and service engine light when off so I kept driving it. A couple days later I was driving and my car started over heating on a highway causing significant loss of power having to pull over to the side of the road to avoid an accident with my grand children in the car [XXX] and a [XXX] . Check engine light is on again check the codes and now misfire in cylinder 4 and crank shaft position is off. I took it to a ford dealership and the only fix is to replace the engine at 90,000 miles??? This repair will cost (($8500)). I haven’t had the car inspected by police or insurance company. Thank God it didn’t cause an accident or catch fire do to my rapid response otherwise this could have caused a fire or accident or even the loss of life for me or my grandchildren. I can’t believe Ford is allowed to sell these vehicles with this much of a threat to the people that are driving them. My vehicle has to sit because I can’t afford an $8000 hit right now. It’ll render me homeless….I am currently making a $600 car payment and $145 insurance payment on a car that is technically totaled. I’m asking for rides to work and there are days that I don’t make it to work. I have tried to tread in the vehicle

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
