Vehicle Speed Control
Filed Sep 3, 2022TX

At random times my vehicle will lurch forward when I am driving. It could be right after I begin to accelerate or while I am at a consistent speed. It usually occurs under 40 mph. I have almost lost control many times. And had to slam on my breaks to avoid hitting people in front of me.

Power steering sticks intermittently causing the vehicle to remain in a state of turn, locks up. The steering wheel must be forced back out of the turn, causing an unpredictable situation when moving back to straight. This is a very dangerous situation to the point where I will not allow my younger drivers to operate the vehicle.

Symptoms: Rough Idle Check Engine Light Code: P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire. Noticed the Coolant was low, and topped it off with distilled water. I've only owned it for a year and have had NO issues with overheating. The next day it wouldn't start. Towed to the dealer. Dealer replaced the starter and pulled out plug #5 and "coolant shot out of the spark plug hole". Dealers recommended service is Head Gasket replacement, with the possibility of head being re-surfaced or complete engine replacement. I was lucky the vehicle was in my driveway when it failed to start. It appears this exact scenario has happened to at least 50 other folks active in a single online community at 60,000-80,000 odometer miles (mine is at 74,000). So I believe this situation is much larger.

Started the van up, and when I tried to turn the shift knob, it was locked in place, and would not turn, van remained in Park. The center display (where the speedometer is) said "shifter service." I turned it off, opened the door, closed the door, and started it up again. Momentarily displayed the message again, but this time I was unable to put it into gear. I headed straight to the dealer. Turned out to be failure of the shifter module. it has been in the shop 5 times.

The following issues have occurred about six times in the last two months. While driving down the road, the car will suddenly and without warning die, and all power is lost. The car automatically shifts to park, and because there is no power, I cannot restart the car. The fact that I cannot turn on my hazard lights is also a safety issue. When this happens, I am usually going a slow speed or idling. Once while going 35 mph, the car’s system blinked but stayed running. About a quarter of a mile down the road, I was pulling into a parking lot when it died. I barely had enough momentum to steer it out of the roadway. Other issues are windows rolling down and doors opening at random times. No service center has looked at my car or reproduced the defect. I have not spoken to the manufacturer at this point.

Power Train

The 2017 Pacifica will sometimes have a lack of power when trying to accelerate, and/or will jerk or shutter. Other times, mainly when the engine is warm, it will shutter and die when starting the engine. Sometimes it will take two or three restart attempts for the engine to remain running. In one instance in slow moving stop and go traffic the vehicle stuttered and then accelerated toward the car in front and I had to slam on the brakes to prevent a collision. The vehicle has been back at the dealer multiple times and they claim there are not any codes they can use to diagnose the problem. Even when the engine dies it does not cause the check engine light to come on. When they scan the codes they usually find P0171 and P0174, but they say the codes are not active, only stored. I am told the vehicle is current on all power train software but the problem is still occurring almost daily.

Vehicle was misfiring, took it to the mechanic said it was the 3rd cylinder. Had that replaced, but the vehicle continued to have problems. It lost power while driving but I was able to maneuver it off the road. Took it back to the mechanic where he stated the head gasket had busted. There was no sign or indication of the vehicle overheating or anything prior to all of this.

While turning (exiting off the highway) to the right while going about 65 mph, my steering wheel seemed to stick at 2 o’clock, and had to jerk the wheel to get it to re-center. Immediately after, I had to turn the wheel to the left while doing about 55mph, and it stuck again at about 11 o’clock, and I had to tug the wheel back to center to get it to re-center. For the next 5 minutes, the steering continues to feel as if it was sticking in one position. Even when driving straight, I had to slightly jerk the wheel to follow the very slight curve of the road, in both directions, going as slow as 25mph. About 10 turns, both left and right, where the steering stuck in the initial turn direction, and I had to jerk the wheel back to center. Issue stopped when I was able to stop and turn off the vehicle. This issue happened 4 days before, but not to this extent. It happened twice, within 10 min of each other, both during a turn to the right, at 60mph and 55mph respectively. It is available for indirection upon request. This is very concerning for my safety, because it could absolutely cause a crash, when the driver cannot completely control steering. This problem has not been confirmed by dealership or service center, nor inspected by anyone. There were no warning lights, messages, or symptoms before first occurance on 8-11-2022, or any symptoms before sudden sticking on 8-15-2022.

My 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring Minivan has a steering issue. Within the last several months, when driving at a variety of speeds, the steering wheel “sticks” in turns. It has occurred on regular side roads, secondary roads, and on the highway. It generally happens when turning the car slightly. Examples include: (1.) during a slight turn in the road in a yield situation, (2.) during a slight turn when there is a bend in the road, (3.) when making a slight turn while on the on-ramp on the highway, (4.) occasionally when switching lanes on the highway. During these situations, the steering wheel sticks and does not return to center, instead, it has to be forced out of the momentary stuck position causing unnatural/unpredictable realignment of the car (swerve, jerking the steering wheel, causing panic) . There are no associated lights or warnings. This problem first lead us to stop driving the car out of fear of getting into an accident (safety for ourselves and others). Then, upon research for similar problems on the internet, we see that there has been a recall for 2017-2019 Chrysler Pacificas for steering issues, but our VIN is not included. I’ve had mechanics to look at it, one kept it several weeks trying to find the issue, done research online, the only answers are there’s a problem but no one has a solution. All guess work. The Occupant Classification Module also has created problems with transmission failure. To be able to drive the van, you have to disconnect the pas

Issue started June 25, 2022. Initially, the shift knob would intermittently lock in park while the engine was running and foot on the brake, unable to shift out of park. Eventually problem cleared itself. Was advised by local auto parts store to replace aux battery and issue should clear. I replaced the auxiliary battery myself the dealership installed the main battery on July 6. Dealership was unable to diagnose. No issues for about 1 week. Problem started again. Check engine light came on along with Service Shift Sensor error message. We made an appointment for the dealership and returned with it on July 19 and told them we needed it back by July 21 end of day. We got the car on July 21. Dealership was unable to service. On July 22, we pulled into parking lot and all systems and vehicle shut down. Multiple error messages. Finally got the car started again and had to wait several minutes for the shift knob to "unlock". Was able to reverse out of parking space but after shifting the knob into Drive, the transmission remained in neutral leaving me stuck in the middle of traffic lane unable to drive. That cleared after a couple minutes, and I was able to get it home. I opened the hood and the battery terminals were loose. I tightened them. The negative terminal on the main battery would not tighten down. I replaced the neg terminal with OEM part from Mopar auto. The error cleared up for several days. I was driving on the highway when my vehicle began to shake and became undriveable. Before this incident I had brought the vehicle to the mechanic for a check engine light showing that there was a misfire and coils needed to be replaced. The coils and spark plugs were replaced but on this day the misfire caused the van to shake on the highway before becoming undriveable. I could not pull over and was left in the middle of the highway unable to drive my vehicle. This created a huge safety hazard as cars were driving by at 55mph and I could not pull over to the shoulder then had to wait for a tow truck. I then had this problem fixed for the 3rd time when on my way home from work today 8/11/22 the van once again began shaking, check engine light came on and misfiring, luckily this time it was as I pulled into my driveway. There was no warning, the check engine light appeared as the van began to shake right before stopping and locking up. This problem has been confirmed with a dealer. The dealer said the issue was the first mechanic used “after market parts” however when I spent the extra money to have the “factory” parts put in by the dealer, the problem also occurred. So I spent additional money to have the same result.

I purchased this pre-owned vehicle back in Feb 2022. A few weeks ago, I noticed the steering of my vehicle requiring more effort to turn back straight once I was driving with the curve of the road. One day when I was turning my vehicle off. A warning message came up, to "Service Shifter". However, it came up once and never returned. I had it checked at Auto zone. They did not show any errors or issues. When I went to check the power steering fluid, I realized that it does not have fluid. But, instead some electric power steering system (not a fan). When I am the steering wheel sticks, when following the curve of the road, instead of the wheel returning to the center on its own. The steering sticks and I have to use extra effort to have the steering wheel return straight when needed. This is very concerning due to the safety associated with crossing other lanes unintentionally. This is putting myself at risks and other drivers on the road at risk, if my steering system is not functioning properly. I believe this is a major safety defect and should have a recall to be fixed. This steering issue happens regularly now when I am driving around curves.

My “New to me” 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L has a steering issue. When driving at a variety of speeds, and with gentle steering inputs, the steering wheel “sticks” in turns. I first noticed it on curves on the interstate, after I would input a slight right turn to follow the bend in the road, the steering wheel would not return to center on it’s own, as is normal. Instead it took a noticeable effort to pull the steering wheel out of the stuck position. Causing quite erratic steering inputs on the interstate. (For example, the steering sticks to the right, and I drift to the far right side of the lane, and then once I apply enough force to overcome the “jam” the steering releases, and I swerve back to the left of my lane). It happens very regularly, although not all the time. With time, I have gotten accustomed to it, and usually don’t leave my lane anymore. But I just hope it never happens at a critical time, or gets worse! It seems to only happen on gentle turns to the right. There are no associated lights or warnings. I am quite knowledgeable about cars; I have seen some people in online forums suggest that it might be an alignment, or the wrong tires, or ruts in the road. I am certain it is not that. The car is malfunctioning, I am certain of that. I would suspect it is an issue with the electric power steering system. But I wouldn’t rule out the rest of the steering system, or even some suspension issue. I have not had it to a dealer, or a shop yet. As the car is stil

The vehicle will randomly lose power when going from a stop or low speed and attempting to accelerate. For example, if I am stopped at a red light and start to accelerate once the light turns green, the vehicle will not gain speed. I have to let up off the gas pedal and then I will feel a "jolt" and then the vehicle will pick up speed. The safety of myself, my kids and others were put at risk because I cannot maintain a safe speed while driving. If I am stopped to make a turn, my vehicle has lost power or wouldn't gain speed as I was turning into or merging into oncoming traffic. Also, and the most dangerous, was when I had the vehicle in reverse to pull out of a parking spot at a store. When I attempted to turn the dial knob to "Drive", the vehicle turned itself off and the dashboard flashed with a message stating I need to put it in park and restart the engine. It was very scary to have the vehicle cut off on me like that. I have taken the vehicle to the local Chrysler dealership and an independent service center. The vehicle stalled on the road in the middle of an intersection and then again in a turn lane a few hours later in the same day. The car was in drive, rumbled near the front of the vehicle, lurched forward, and then the engine cut out and would not restart. Trying to start the car again made a REVVVVVV-putta-putta-putta noise and there was not any control of the ignition on my end. It revved up and then hovered around 1/2 of 1 RPM on the dash then it would cut out and ask me to put it in park and start again. Hitting the engine start button did nothing and the dash electronics seemed to cut in and out. Each time I went to restart the car, it went from being in drive to stalling to needing 5+ minutes before it could be driven again, this happened without warning. Since I purchased this vehicle used less than a year ago, I have had an issue with rough shifting or the vehicle feeling like it loses power then lurches when it finally shifts. Now over the past couple months I have had it in the shop 4 times, the 4th time it's at a Chrysler dealership. Check engine light comes on and is blinking, car is shaking and knocking terribly. the shaking does subside after you drive a minute and the engine warms up but the problem has progressively gotten worse each time the light comes back on as I do have to continue driving it. Now the dealership states there is condensation in the cylinder, indicated either a blown head gasket or a warped cylinder head but there is no way to know without tearing the whole engine out of the car and tearing it apart. I'm also told that with labor for a new engine from Chrysler I'm looking at about $11,000!!! and due to supply chain issues we don't know how long it will take to get the parts. I've had this vehicle less than a year and I'm over $1000 in on repairs already that have not fixed the overall problem. HELP

Our van shifts really hard at low speeds (around 12-15mph). This happens randomly. We’ve taken to our dealership and they’ve replaced the electronic shift module (I think that’s what they called it) but it’s doing it again. This has been going on for over 3 years!

I have not gotten into an accident. I have noticed for a long time my van transmission seems to have problems shifting. I will be starting to accelerate, and when i reCh speeds between 25-55 it often feels like I have no power (more often with time) I can hear the van "revving" bur not increasing speed at the rate it should be. Then all of a sudden the transmission feels like it "catches" and it lurches forward. Making it feel like the van us going to literally fall apart, or have the enginefall out. It is a very scary!! And it is getting worse even though when this happens I have started to take my foot off the gas because it I feel something terrible will happen. However taking my foot off the gas, especially when merging is extremely dangerous (people are so agressive driving these days) and I continue to be put in dangerous situations because of this issue. I know other people are complaining about this so I do not know why a recall has not been submitted! We need this fixed. Please help us!! Also anothwr issue.. Cruise control speeds up the vehicle when going downhill. It does not ever stop from accelerating! I'm aware and always take cruise control off on big hills. But this I'd also very dangerous as sometimes I have to tap the break because the cruise won't come off with the button when this happens.

After running my van through the car wash we found water leaking into the left rear interior through the roof. We took the vehicle to the dealer and they showed us the left rear seam under the roof trim was not completely sealed and had a hole in it. The seam sealer from the factory is painted in color and we had to pay to have our roof resealed due to factory defect. This could be safety related in nature due to exhaust gases from the tail pipe flowing back into the unsealed vehicle.

14 mph, the engine revved and the vehicle jerked. The contact stated that he slammed on the brake pedal to prevent a collision. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on two separate occasions. The dealer informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The contact stated that upon investigating, he determined that the failure was related to the transmission

The battery constantly dies. If we go 1 day without driving, we have to jump it. The screen will malfunction and black out. The sliding doors will not close requiring us to close them several times before they actually close properly. We’ve had issues with the emergency brake automatically engaging after some of the battery issues as well without indicating the parking brake is on. We’ve replaced the first battery after roughly 3.5 years, and still the battery that is less than 1 year old dies constantly. We’ve had 2 garages do diagnostics and replace parts (1 being a dodge/Chrysler dealer) and even after thousands of dollars spent to fix the problem, a week later the battery is dead again. It’s an endless cycle. We’ve also experienced jerking from the transmission while driving that did not go away after software fixes. The dates and info below are for the most recent time the battery died, which is probably the 50th time it’s died in the last year.

What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
