2022 Volkswagen Taos complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2022 record →
1. car is unsafe starting from a stop and after slowing down to accelerate out of a turn. in both instances there is a significant lack of response w/ the accelerator where it won't actually respond until there's about 2-3k RPMs. this makes it extremely dangerous at intersections because you can't trust that it will accelerate in a responsive manner. many times, the car will respond as if you've dropped the clutch on a manual transmission - jerking around like a 15YO learning to drive a stick. The problem has not been confirmed by dealer - they were supposed to review at our 1st year maintenance but didn't then wanted to charge me to come back. It has not been inspected by others. There are no warning lights. 2. The coolant level on car consistently drops despite low mileage (1st time was around 9k) and less than a year old. It's a risk because it may be a head gasket or engine issue. The dealer did not find anything, but it continues to go through coolant. Advised to keep an eye on it. 🙄 Not inspected by others. Yes low coolant warning light - first appeared multiple times around 9k.
Car has 11,144. Took it in for coolant issues had NY State Inspection done. Was told rear brakes and rotors needed to be replaced at the cost of1000.00 dollars. I need to check fronts in 6 months. I use the car mostly to see my daughter and granddaughter in Ct. mostly highway driving. I went on line and found a lot of customers are having the same problem. This is my third VW LEASE I never had a problem with brakes. I was upset that this is a problem for a lot of people. I also have a check engine check coolant problem. This will be the sixth time I am bringing the car in. They are keeping my car with no loaner for a week to replace the head gasket. I have a baby shower on Long Island for my niece and will have to pay hundreds of dollars for a rental or Uber. I am disabled and live on a thousand dollars a month.
Engine stalled while operating the vehicle. Engine would not start after stalling. Vehicle had to be towed.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Taos. The contact stated while driving 30-40 MPH, the Electronic Power Control (EPC) warning light illuminated, and the vehicle was sputtering while driving. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The contact stated that upon scanning the vehicle with a scanner, diagnostic codes indicating an EPC and throttle body failure were retrieved. Additionally, the scanner retrieved the recall alert of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V214000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to their location for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 52,382.
Rear brakes wore so rapidly they were deemed unsafe for driving by state inspection, down to under 2mm in a year. Volkswagen knew it was an issue and extended the warranty, but put such limitations on when they would cover the warranty they caused customers to drive on unsafe rear brakes before they would consider coverage.
Uneven wearing on the rear brake pads from rear passenger to rear driver side brake pads ending up with a faulty caliper. Still in possession of faulty caliper.
Had car for less than one year. Have had coolant level warning twice. First time was eight months after getting the car and the second was three months later.
Within weeks of leading car, EPC light flashing, check engine light, limp mode from 55 to about 30. I bought it to dealer said fixed. A few months later again, brought it to another dealer fixed it, said don’t use eco mode and high tier gas. It was fine for a few months did it again two days ago. I shut the engine off and turned it on was fine. VW HQ said no new car. They will keep trying to fix it. Dealer won’t change it. Dealer wants me to bring it in again….They will try something else. I explained to dealer and VWHQ this is very dangerous. Previous incident 11/2023, previous incident shortly after leasing the car. Each time told it was fixed and not.
The vehicle's brake pad has become worn out and is malfunctioning, despite being leased two years ago.
My taos is been on the shop several times for a check engine light and it works for a couple of months and the light comes back on according to the dealer ship it is an evap sensor that keeps failing the power train it not at 100% it can cause an accident I was traying to do a buy back but the company said that NO my car it been on the shop at least 5 times for the same problem. Please HELP.
ABS, Tire Pressure monitor system, front/rear/side assist warning lights lit up while driving solid yellow indicating there was an error. Also a start stop error light on. Stayed lit for one minute and then they all went away. This is now happening every day for the past three days. Today the steering light turn on as well and had difficulty with steering the wheel for about 30 seconds. These incidents occurred after turning the car on after it had been parked for 5 hours. Then while driving at 30-40 mph.
Failing head gasket that needs to be replaced. Appears to be a common issue. Parts are backordered so have been waiting on the repair for over a month now. Issue identified in the shop on 1/25/24, but was leaking coolant before that.
This vehicle was purchased new 1/2022 and it has had several issues that occurred: - 2/23 driving down the highway trying to accelerate onto the highway I pressed the gas pedal and it wouldn’t accelerate for about 3-4 seconds then the check engine light came on as well as the car losing power - while driving the car the forward collision indicator has activated without at car being around and stops suddenly - if you put the car in reverse sometime the car will not go into drive so your basically waiting for the car to respond - I barely drive my car it has 19k miles I do not feel safe even driving this vehicle at this point. - when you take it to the dealership they say if it can’t be reproduced they can’t fix the issues no matter if I call and state there is a problem. I’ve been a VW owner since 2005 and this vehicle has given me more problems then any VW I’ve ever owned
Many fuel system issues along with poor brakes create an unsafe vehicle even after the dealership was given several attempts to fix.
Múltiple issues and ranging from brakes multiple times to check engine lights. Do not feel safe in this vehicle.
DASH LIGHTS GO SO DIM AT TIMES YOU CANNOT SEE DASH. YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD TO SEE YOUR SPEED. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS POST OF THIS HAPPENING ON VW TAOS FORUM WEBSITE. VW NEEDS TO FIX THIS AS IT A HAZARD TO DRIVER SAFETY. VW DOESNT KNOW HOW TO FIX IT.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Taos. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light and engine oil light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed and determined that the head gasket was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 33,000.
The car completely shut off while driving it. This was not the first time this happened. The EPC and check engine lights are constantly on. I have brought the car several times to try to fix the problem, nothing works. I have also had to add radiator fluid twice. The car was sold to me during a stop sale that I had no idea about. I tried going through VW for a buy back that they were initially going to grant and then changed their mind once a fix for the recall was announced. Horrific company to deal with.
Vehicle has been having accelerator issues. Car has not been registering acceleration. This has happened on 6 separate occasions. The first occurrence happened when I was at an intersection and I took my foot off the brake and put my foot on the gas pedal. No acceleration besides the torque received when not applying gas (1-3mph). This lasted for about 7-10 seconds and then I jolted forward due to gas pedal being pressed down and car registering the gas. The other occurrences have happened when I start my car in the morning. I will start my car and apply gas. The car does not register the gas, it moves slowly from the torque converter. This lasts about 7-8 seconds of this slow moving. My foot is applied to the gas pedal, but car doesn't register it. After about 8 seconds, my car will register my foot being on the gas pedal. It goes from about 1 mph to 12-17 mph in 2 seconds. When it does, the gas pedal is not pressed 1/2 day down, 3/4 way down or all the way down to the floor. The gas pedal is pressed very gently. I learned from the first time in the intersection, not to press the gas pedal down all the way due to the aggressive acceleration of the car at an unknown time. The date of the intersection occurrence I did not record due to me thinking it was a one off situation. After the second time I started documenting each time this happened. Temperatures have varied from when this happens, it does not happen when it is a certain temperature out. I have driven my car consisten
I purchased my vehicle new on 12/31/21. The vehicle currently has 19,200 miles. The coolant light went on so I took it to the VW dealership as it was due for an oil change and tire rotation soon. The dealer indicated that the head gasket is leaking internally. The parts are on back order and there is no eta. From what I have researched regarding other 2022 VW Taos owners experiences with head gasket issues, it could be 30-90 days before I get my vehicle back (which the dealership has indicated is true). There appears to be a host of other issues that people are having with their 2022 VW Taos including rear brakes wearing way too fast and other engine issues. I have no concerns with how the dealership is managing this issue, however, based on my research, I am surprised a recall has not yet been issued. I am concerned about the lifetime health of my vehicle and the issues I may to deal with after the warranty ends, if the engine is already requiring major repairs after only 2 years and less than 20,000 miles.
Fuel System: The car hesitates when you push the gas, and then will suddenly go with a jolt. That is unsafe as you are turning on to road and when you push the gas-you do not move for a few seconds which could cause an accident. There are no warning lights regarding this, however, lots of the same exact complaints for this model on the internet. Engine: The coolant goes low, and the dealership says it needs a new head gasket replaced, however, was told to continue to drive the car until the part comes in which is on back order for months. Electrical: Lights come on telling me that my tire is low, when tire is not low. My oil light came on saying to reduce the oil level. Dealership just turned the light off and called it good. I worry that something is wrong, but the car does not give accurate safe information. The carplay system has to be restarted all the time due to connecting issues, and map not working. Additionally, the car had to have rear breaks replaced at only 27,000k miles.
Complete radio/gps randomly shuts off. GPS is always saying these VW are in different locations than they are.
Rear brakes wear out prematurely, car has only 12500 miles
I took our 2022 VW Taos in for 15,000 mile service. The service advisor said the rear brakes were at 3mm and need to be replaced along with rotors. The brakes shouldn't be this low for the mileage on the car. Apparently, there was a time frame to repair the brakes in 2022 when we made the purchase and VW didn't inform us of the brake issue at the time. VW service says it'll cost over $900 to replace pads and rotors.
I built this car brand new at the end of 2021, received in February 2022. At 20,000 miles, my car was already noted to have rear brakes that were substandard and significantly more worn than is normal for wear and tear on a brand new vehicle. At this time, I was not informed of the problem, and it was led to continue until I went in for standard 30k maintenance. When I went in for the 30k maintenance, i was told my rear brakes would already need to be replaced. There is no brand new car that should need brakes replaced at 30k. Volkswagen has extended their warranty on the brakes to 24k, but since my car was out of that mileage range, it is not covered by the warranty. The brake warranty should be extended to 40k miles - as even with hard use, you still shouldn't need your brakes replaced until at least 50k.
My 2022 Volkswagen Taos 4 motion around 29,000 miles November 8, 2023 overheat warning light on, call toll to dealership results of head gasket problem part wait time at least 2 months but dealership offers free loaner car, but unfortunately dealership called me on December 29th the part not available until April that I have to return my loaner car that Volkswagen not available and I have drive my own car until part come, any I purchased 5 additional bumper to bumper warranty not even qualify any free loaner car for Volkswagen bad design.
My car suddenly shuts off even while in motion. When this happens I have to brake, put the car in Parking, press the off button, press it again to turn the car on, put the car on Drive, and the I can keep going. This is extremely dangerous, and have almost been hit several times. I don’t feel safe driving my car anymore. I brought my car to the VW dealer and they said there is nothing wrong with the car.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Taos. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at a complete stop, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle stalled and jerked. The contact stated that the failure was persistent and almost caused several crashes. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,500.
2022 taos using coolant. Originally believed to be head gasket could as well be burning. At this time we are not sure a head gasket will make a difference. Dealership stated to keep coolant with to keep from over heating. 61,XXX miles in the vehicle. Did discuss pressure issues with the dealer about a year ago but they could not find the issue
Volkswagen has a leaking head gasket and has been at the dealer for 3 months and Volkswagen and dealer do not have information on when part for the vehicle will arrive so the car is safe to drive
Head gasket is leaking engine coolant. Engine coolant light stays on.
Rear Brake and Rotors- At about 14,500 miles the vehicle started making this screeching noise. Rear brake pads and rotors wearing out prematurely. There is no indication through the health reports sent by VW or Carfax (VW affiliated) that is nothing wrong (all healthy). I took to dealership. The customer service rep at Rudolph VW in El Paso, TX told me that "the front brakes were great and the rear brakes were at about 6/10 and to come back in a few months before the 20,000 miles warranty ran out. That VW was aware about the supplier but could not do anything at this point". This is a safety issue and its a Warranty covered issue as is under 20,000 miles. I never had a vehicle with this issue. I fear for my life. I am at about 16,500. I don't know I f am going to make it to 20,000. Another issue I have with this vehicle is that the engine light came on as I was driving. I called it in and they simply said oh yes that's usual. This is a new vehicle! I am about to take it in this week.
The car stalls and cannot propel itself forward. Two dealerships have unsuccessfully attempted to replace and fix the fuel injection pump, sensors and harnesses. The car has been to Palmetto 57 Volkswagen (Miami, FL) and Jim Ellis Volkswagen (Kennesaw, GA) dealer service centers 5 times since the car was purchased on October 7, 2023. Today is December 1, 2023. I've been told three times that the engineers at the VW National Headquarters have been informed of the problem and are working on fix. The car is still at the Palmetto 57 service center and cannot be driven due to lack of a repair solution.
Warning light for coolant appeared around 11K mile mark, took it in to dealership where service department said there were no leaks and added coolant. After several months, warning light appeared again, only this time I bought coolant from dealership and topped it off myself. They said it's normal for this to happen. 3 months later, the warning light is back on and a different dealership is now saying the head gasket needs to be replaced.
On two occasions our Taos, when put in drive rolled backwards on a slight grade when the brake was released. The dealership says they cannot replicate the problem and suggests waiting 1.5 to 3 seconds after shifting to drive before releasing the brake. I don't think this is standard procedure, at least in any car I've ever driven and I've never heard of such a procedure in any car. In addition, the airbag light on the dash is currently on. The dealership diagnosed the problem as a damaged wire under the passenger seat. I inspected the wire and found a light gauge wire extending from the floorboard to the bottom of the passender seat, which is damaged, for reasons unknown, however is glaringly unprotected and vulnerable.
Vehicle not stopping properly. Vehicle is rolling further due to Rear Brake Pads deteriorating prematurely. Rear Brake Pads deteriorating under 20,000 miles after replacement of the original brakes that deteriorated under 20,000 miles. Volkswagen issued an extended warranty for the initial brake defect. Volkswagen has not fixed the braking issue.
There is a serious acceleration problem. When trying to enter into traffic either turning left or right or going straight from stopped position, there is serious lag/hesitation to the vehicle accelerating. After pressing the throttle for a couple of seconds with very little movement, it will then jerk and squeal the tires. There have been many times when we have come close to being hit by this problem while pulling into traffic. I have had this vehicle back to the dealer twice. The first time they said there was no issue. The second time, I talked to the service manager (a personal friend) and he admitted there was an issue with acceleration. However, Volkswagen had no solution. No one else has looked at this vehicle. No warning lamps or lights. I have another appointment with my dealer for the latest recall and will address this with them again. Please, please, please discuss this with Volkswagen and get them to fix this issue. Other than the lag/hesitation in acceleration, I very much like this vehicle.
2022 vw Taos had leaking coolant, notified by coolant warning light. Coolant replaced 3 times, but always low within a few weeks. Took to dealer and Taos diagnosed with a blown head gasket. Told car was unsafe to drive and dealer confirmed the problem. Have been waiting on the parts to fix for over 3 weeks. Also told the entire engine must be rebuilt to fix. Very concerning.
I came to a stop at a red light and the engine turned over to preserve energy, once the light turned green and I attempted to gas, the car would not move. I turned off and on repeatedly to try to get the car to go but with no success, I was causing traffic for at least 5 minutes while I had no clue what else to do but wait until it wanted to turn over. Also on two separate occasions my screen would glitch and turn off, stopping my music, and terminating GPS. Both times I was able to record for my records.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Taos. The contact stated that while driving out of the driveway, the brakes made an abnormal sound. Additionally, the instrument panel became inoperable. The coolant warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to a faulty gasket. The vehicle was repaired by the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 3,000. The VIN was not available.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Taos. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 24,000.
Head gasket failure which leads to coolant leak. Engine failure possible. After doing some research I found that the 2022 VW Taos' all have this in common around 13,000 miles. My vehicle will be going to the shop tomorrow morning but through my research I found that people are waiting weeks for head gasket replacements because they're on backorder due to the volume of replacements. Check engine light came on maybe 3 weeks before coolant lights as well as a lag in drive pick up.
The screen will freeze when driving and the navigation will freeze about 3x on a 20min drive. Also when I use reverse the camera will freeze or black out and I am not able to see where I am going reverse. I have gone to VW dealer in Huntington Beach and they said they cannot do anything about it until they issue a recall or if there is an update for the electrical system which can take a year or more. It is a new car. It should not have these issues.
Trying to leave work. Have to stop the car to scan my badge. Went to hit the gas and the car was off while in drive. Took me 5 minutes to get the car to turn back on. Serious safety issue that they said is only happening to the AWD but it’s also happening to the FWD and Volkswagen is not doing anything about it.
When starting out from a dead stop there is a hesitation for about 1 1/2 second. If you press harder on the accelerator the vehicle surges forward. This also happens if you are on a highway and try to accelerate to change lanes or pass some other vehicle. I have been to my dealer three time for th same problem. The computer results claim BAD FUEL. I have tried all grades of fuel even though the vehicle is designed for 87 Octane. The service mgr suggested 94 octane, I also have gone to a different dealer as per VW customer service’s advice. Their service rep informed me that VW’s all models have this same problem. There was also an update installed which there was somewhat of a minor change but the problem is still there.
Vehicle accelerates rapidedly or sluggish from stopped. Unable to anticipate which response you may get operating the vehicle and is therefore a safety in my opinion. Also the drop pad overheats my android phone to the point the phone shuts down and is so hot you can't pick it up.
Brakes are on this care are failing well in advance of typical cars. My car's rear brakes are messing at a 3 with less than 20,000 miles on the vehicle. I'm aware of a safety campaign, but VW says my car wasn't made in that window. Clearly something is wrong or my brakes wouldn't be wearing out at less than half of what is expected. Ironically, my wife's Passat is doing the same.
This is a follow-up to a previous complaint. I've had my car into the dealership twice to check for Coolant leaks, as I am losing coolant on a consitent basis. To date the dealership has not been able to sort the leak. I've just learned VW has issued a TSB 2071245/1 for this issue. The text of the TSB includes the language: "Original engine production head gasket design can lead to coolant leaks.". VW has yet to issue a recall for this issue to all affected vehicles which include 2022 MY VW Taso (my car) and VW Jetta. Potentilally all of these vehicles on the road can have head gasket leaks which could cause an engine to seize on the highway. VW has identified the issue but has not yet recalled these vehicles. This is a safety concern for the approximatley 80 thousand cars on the road which are affected. Thank you.
Head Gasket failure on a 2022 Taos. Multiple vehicles with this issue at the dealership with no part ETA. Car has been at the dealership for 2 months. No ETA on part.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
