From purchase this vehicle’s passenger door/door handle have not function properly. One time the door opened without manipulating the door handle. Too many times to count the door handle is used to open the door, however, the door doesn’t open. The door opening spontaneously is obviously a safety concern. The door not opening when attempting to open it, could also be a safety concern if needing urgent egress. The second issue has been with the electrical system. Greater than five times the monitor and seemingly the entire electrical system goes blank. On two occasions this sent the car to “limp mode “. This is the safety concern due to it occurring in traffic.

While driving on the freeway at approximately 65 MPH using adaptive cruise control (ACC) the steering column display changed from MPH to kilometers per hour (KPH). See attached photo and description. The change of cruise control setting distracted the driver and caused confusion since the ACC speed setting changed from 65 MPH to 104 KPH. It took a minute for the driver to realize the units of measure caused this change. The dealer has not confirmed this failure, since it is intermittent and has provided not resolution. Several communications to Volkswagen customer service provided no solution.

I have a Manufacturer Compliance Recall and a Manufacturer Safety Recall outstanding, neither of which the manufacturer can fix. I have called the dealership multiple times to make an appointment to have them fixed, but they do not yet have the remedies available. I have had multiple problems with this car from the day I got it on November 6, 2023. I get errors that pop up constantly on the screen, but they come and go so quickly while I'm driving that I can barely read them, much less take a photo. One of them says maneuver braking is not available. My screen goes out and flashes constantly, but again, it happens so quickly that I can't get photos while I'm driving. I have tried many times, but I'm not going to risk my safety to get a photo of my failing software. This car has no TPMS sensors, so I never have any idea of the status of my tires or if they're low. The car brakes suddenly, going forward and in reverse, and it has happened going at a high speed on the tollway. It was very scary and thankfully no one was behind me. I have trouble getting the charger out of the port on a regular basis. I have to unlock the vehicle on the fob about 5 times before the charger will come out. When I plug in the charger, it is hit or miss whether it will actually charge. I always have to check it later to see if it actually did. It charges on the first try about 50% of the time, and this car has put me in a bind multiple times when I have a long drive the next day. I believe Volkswagen

1.What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The screen failed and went completely black while driving. It would not turn on again. The component is still installed in the vehicle and available for inspection upon request. 2.How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My wife and 1-year-old child were in the car with me on the freeway when the screen failed. This created a dangerous situation that could have led to a serious accident. 3.Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The issue is known to the manufacturer, but there is currently no remedy for it. 4.Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, but they are unable to provide a solution at this time. 5.Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, there were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms before the failure occurred.

Multiple times over the weekend of 11/16/2024 I attempted to put my vehicle into reverse as normal and the backup camera failed to initiate. I had to restart the car to remedy the situation. This is a different glitch than what I previously experienced with the screens going blank. I have contacted VW about these issues and thus far they have been unwilling to remedy the situation. This issue is a CLEAR safety risk as my son or other children playing in the driveway or street near this car are in danger without a functioning back up camera. In my case I refused to move the car until I was able to get the backup camera to engage. Sometimes this required multiple restarts of the car to stop the glitch.

So our door handles have not been working to the point where my kids are stuck in the car and they can’t open the door and from the outside we are not able to open the door. We have safety warnings that pop up often then disappear and also we have our screens turn black and take a mom to turn back on. We have called VW corporate and they told us to keep taking it in then we take it for service and they can’t do anything due to them not having a solution to fix these issues because their under recalls and were physically having the issues they can’t do anything. It’s annoying and it’s a huge safety issue for us and our kids!!

Prior the car would not work or start without key fob detected. Concerning that the key fob would stop operation in the middle of the road as it has refused to operate for me in the past. 2nd time this happened, it forced me to uber back home to fetch another FOB, which did not resolve the issue. Not only did this cost me 1+ hour of time, I do not believe its a battery issue in the FOB. Both FOB are less than 10 months old. 2nd FOB did not work as well. Eventually the key was detected after some amount waiting period.

Accident avoidance features I've purchased in the car many times does not work. 1. Proximity sensor does not alert when needed Twice in the last month, vehicle approaching from the right (passenger side) darted forward without any warning. Once in the parking lot and another car also approached from a stopped light (which he broken) causing me to swerve and hit the brake hard on an intersection. 2. Blind spot light on both the driver and passenger mirror only work about 80% or 4/5 times. You can track these intentionally when passing another car, or be passed by a car to the right or left. 3. Proximity alert sounds when at a standstill on a traffic light. Even slightest movement on the brake pedal will sometimes trigger this false positive. I bought the car because of these key safety features and no longer believe these can be relied upon. Have many video and photos to track these events as I try and document for dealership. After advising the dealership, they cannot fix these problems and claim they cannot reproduce these issues. Even after sending them video and photos of these events.

The speedometer, infotainment system have stopped working and the driver seat warmer turned on randomly while driving. On 10/4/2024, I noticed the car’s main infotainment system was unresponsive and showing a wrong time and frozen. I was driving and could not stop and moments later the speedometer was starting to malfunction as well. I was driving on a local high way and the speedometer indicated I was going at 1 mph or similar. When I was stopped at the stop light it indicated I was going at 4 mph. To avoid collisions, I drove at the speed of traffic. Also the seat warmer turned on randomly. The same day, we called to schedule an appointment with VW near our house and brought the vehicle in the next day. They took a few days to work on it. Once the car was ready, I visited the dealership and the report said they could not reproduce the issues. I asked if then how they could fix the issues and they were unable to and just updated module.

On two occasions the entire instrument panel went dark. Speed and other information were not available. It is my perception that lane keeping assistance, blind spot monitoring, automatic braking for collision avoidance and other safety systems were not available during those incidents. I have inquired of dealership maintenance personnel, and they do not know how many systems are affected. When these incidents occur, it is disconcerting for me as a driver and could cause an accident. If the safety systems are not functioning, then the probability of high-speed collision is increased. Examples of that would include front-rear collision at highway speed and lane changing or merging on expressways. A recall for these problems was issued in May, 2024 with an update in July but the manufacturer says they don't know how to fix it. I have asked them for either a prompt repair or for them to buy-back the car. They have denied my request. I believe that so much time has passed that they should be required to repurchase the car.

This vehicle has continual electronic issues. Aside from the 2 (as of now) recalls that are out on it- with no repair available- the functionality of this car is completely undependable. The computer screen (which controls almost every function of the car) often shuts off in the middle of operating (e.g. driving on a highway) and the only way to "fix" it is to shut the car off. Not ideal. Of course, this issue is intermittent so when i brought to VW they were unable to replicate.

I left my office at about [XXX] on [XXX] Thursday for home, traffic was moderate, approaching the long weekend. I reached home at 5:29 pm, opened the garage and started parking the vehicle inside the car. All of a sudden, the car just took off and randomly accelerated and the next thing I found was that the vehicle landed and stopped right inside the house on the small island by the garage entrance, which is about 9” higher than garage floor, into the house with the front metal door and right side of the wall and bathroom door all shattered in front! On my left, I saw my wife in (by kitchen stove) in total panic and my [XXX] mother- in- law shouting to my wife. “What happened?!”, and my [XXX] grandson crying and closing his ears from the loud sound! Instinctively, as I realized I would not be able to exit the vehicle from where it was lodged, I reversed the vehicle back into garage where I could come out. As I switched into reverse gear (which this vehicle requires you to press the brake to be able to switch from drive to reverse), the vehicle again just accelerated with force. This time, damaging the garbage can in the garage, left garage door vertical track, drywall and outside brick wall, as the brakes were not engaging. If I had not steered my car right or left, I would have landed in the living room of the house across the street. Therefore, I steered to the right to remain on the street (in hindsight, this may not have been the best choice – in case there was another ve

I was arriving for an appointment and preparing to parallel park on the street. I was parking on a street in front of the office building, which is located on a corner. I observed the second and third vehicles parked from the corner were preparing to depart. I moved my vehicle slightly to the shoulder and activated my blinker to wait for the vehicles to leave. I idled next to the car parked at the corner to allow room for the departing vehicles to exit and for myself to pull in. Both vehicles pulled out of their parking spaces and into the street. I then proceeded to accelerate to pull into a parking spot. As two spots had opened, it was large enough for me to pull in forward without needing to parallel park by backing in. As I started to pull in, the vehicle’s automatic emergency braking system malfunctioned and erroneously engaged the brakes with violent force. An alarm sounded in the vehicle, a red warning flashed on the screen, and I was launched violently forward in my seat. The force with which the vehicle stopped made it seem as though I had hit something hard, like a wall. I quickly put the vehicle in park -- only halfway pulled into the parking spot -- and exited the vehicle to survey the situation. After circling the vehicle, it was clear that nothing had been hit and there were no obstructions in the road whatsoever. I returned to the driver’s seat and resumed parking. After pulling into the space, I put the vehicle into reverse to straighten out. Again, the vehicl

I'm almost a year in a lease for this car. Made an appointment to take it in for the first service and then by word of mouth found out about the recalls, called to make sure they'd be able to fix the recalls and was told they would not be able to and so it was decided we'd wait to take it in for service when the fixes were available. That was on 9/6/2024. After searching my VIN with NHTSA - and only after that did I receive a recall notice and that is only for the door handles. I tried to contact VW per the instructions on the recall notice but contacting them via their website didn't work and the phone hold time was over an hour. I have experienced the software issue where everything goes blank including my speedometer and resets minutes later. We did go to a dealership and some of the conversation was that they can't sell the ID4 right now because of the recalls and the car is unsafe - Yet I am driving this car as my only mode of transportation.

Hello, our vehicle doors frequently unlock on their own and there have also been times while we are in the vehicle where we try to unlock the doors and they won’t unlock. I am worried about getting locked in the car, or having the doors open while driving. The windows also have automatically all rolled down with no one engaging with the vehicle. There is a concern for the safety of the belongings in the car. And I’m now generally worried about other electrical malfunctions. We have brought these issues to our VW dealer twice and they cannot reproduce them or fix them. There are no warning lights for these issues. I know there are new recalls for this vehicle, but VW has no estimated time as to when they will be ready. I feel very unsafe in this vehicle.

All instrument panels and electric panels turn black. It is not replicable, it is not predictable, and there is no fix yet available. I have been in touch with VW and my dealer multiple times, and they do not have a fix. My dealer asked me to escalate the issue to the corporate side of VW and I did - they told me that I should take it into service. We got the service center on the line and they told them the same thing they told me: there is no fix available for this issue. As we go into winter, this has now become a CRITICAL safety issue. I cannot safely drive my vehicle, particularly in the snow or in the mountains, where I live. I am appalled at their lack of regard for this issue, and have requested to trade my vehicle in for the model that does not have the issue. They have informed me that is not an option. I was backing out of an outdoor shopping center slot located at the end by the curb. I had to attempt this three times due to traffic and another car that was also trying to back out. On my third attempt, I hit the curb with my passenger rear wheel. When I changed gear to move forward, the ID4 jerked violently three times. Coming up over the last curb the vehicle hit a parked car sending backward and it hit 2 more vehicles. No one was injured, since the vehicles were empty. The police did come and wrote an incident report, but not a police report because in California since it was property only they do not generate a report. However, this could have been fatal since people were waking about the parking lot. There were not any warning lights or messages. It has not as yet been inspected by by anyone . Sudden unintended acceleration I was pulling next to a curb as I was parking. My speed was approximately two or three miles per hour. My right foot was on the brake slowing the vehicle. My right hand was at the two o'clock position on the steering wheel. My left hand was not on the steering wheel. The cruise control was not engaged and had not been engaged for at least ten or fifteen miles. We had just traveled about 45 miles. The weather was clear and the roads were dry. The temperature was in the upper 40s. As we were slowing, the car suddenly accelerated as if I had fully depressed the accelerator. Since my foot was already on the brake I jammed it on and the car stopped. I’m estimating that we traveled no more than ten feet before coming to a stop. There was a car parked in front of us. The acceleration was not initiated by me, it was sudden, and it was strong. It was impossible for me to have accidentally pressed the accelerator as my right foot was on the brake. It also was impossible that I could have accidentally pressed the cruise control resume switch as my left hand was not even on the steering wheel. To me this represents a serious situation. Had we been in traffic at the time, or if there had not been sufficient room in front of the car, this could have resulted in an accident. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed in inclement weather, the alarm system detected that the doors were opened, causing the vehicle to come to a complete stop; however, the doors were properly closed. Additionally, the instrument panel display screen intermittently went blank for 15-20 seconds while driving. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after opening and closing the doors. The dealer was notified of the failures, and the contact was informed that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (Structure) and 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the parts to do the recall repair were not yet available. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that he had not received notification of the recalls. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and two cases were opened. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

Collision warnings/automatic breaking has failed on vehicle multiple times. Presumably due to the software/hardware not being able to process. This has led to several incidents of near collision when in travel assist (self driving) and in general operation where it has actively backed into objects. Dealer did not have comments on incidents. Also raised infotainment resetting during driving from current campaign which is 6+ months old and they did not have an ETA on a resolution. Recommend pushing a forced buy back campaign as VW is unable to fix these dangerous issues.

The defective/incomplete vehicle software occasionally causes an dangerous condition. The child safety lock for the back doors can disengage without driver input or knowledge. The software in the vehicle occasionally clears (or resets) customized driver settings because the software is defective/incomplete. One of these "driver settings" appears to be the engagement of the child safety lock. When the vehicle user software occasionally resets, the child safety lock can disengage without obvious notification to the driver. My intention is for the child safety lock to be always engaged. The child safety lock control is a touch button located on the driver door, which illuminates when engaged, and goes dark when disengaged. My four-year-old child has opened the rear door next to the child car seat. Luckily this was while the vehicle was stopped and the child was secured into the car seat, so the child could not exit the door at that time. It was at that time I realized the child lock system was off, although I have previously had it on and had not commanded it to shut off. The safety risk in this situation should be obvious.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
