The car has been giving me fake forward collision warnings. Even in parking lots

Air Bags malfunctioning, if fact, not even working on this 2023 Tesla Model Y.
Took delivery of new Tesla Model Y on Friday, March 24th. While driving it to my residence (205 miles away) noticed that the alignment was off and vehicle pulled to the left at highway speeds on flat, level sections of roadway. I was not informed of the 100 miles or 7 days to report issues with vehicle. I scheduled service with Tesla with odometer reading of 348. Tesla service verified the issue and corrected it but charged me $275 for an issue that was present from factory.
Water intrusion rear tail lights. According to Tesla service it is within Tesla specs.
Driving eastbound on I-70 in Nebraska March 29 I had about 4 incidents of sudden braking with no obstacles or even any cars or trucks in front. All oncoming traffic was far across the median. In each of these incidents, there was a dark patch across the highway, probably from recently applied asphalt. One of these was severe enough that there would have been an accident if there were any closely following cars. In that particular incident there was a small concrete bridge that had an obvious dark black surface - probably from resurfacing. I purchased "full self driving" for the car a few days ago. The car was in auto-steering mode and was capable of changing lanes initiated by the turn signal, although there was no lane change at the time of these incidents. I have not reported this other than through this web site.
Phantom/False Forward Collision Warning 1. March 28, 2023 While driving on Alder Woods Dr, Fairfax, VA at 6:21PM Forward Collision Warning activated automatically for a parked car on the street 2. March 28, 2023 While driving on Alder Woods Dr., Fairfax, VA at 6:22PM Forward Collision Warning activated automatically for another parked car on the street - same trip as above at 1., but additional incident 3. On March 25, 2023 on Alder Woods Dr., Fairfax VA Forward Collision Warned activated automatically for yet another parked car on the street. When forward collision warning activates the screen turns red, there are high sounding alarms inside the car, it distracts the passenger by creating an unsafe conditions for the wrong reasons.
I have seen this happen on several occassions during my trip from Austin,TX to Lubbock, TX. I out the car on Cruise Control and the car has applied emergency brakes suddenly several times even when there is no cars or other obstacles around. Even after I tried disabling the "Automatic Emergency Braking" feature, I am still facing this issue on several occasions. I have taken 2 trips so far in the past 2 months from Austin to Lubbock (about 360 miles one way) and I ahve decided the car is not at all reliable for me. I am even considering trading-in the car for another brand. This is real safety hazard.
This concerns the front seat belts in the car. I am just over five feet tall. Even with the seatbelt adjusted to the lowest position on the door post, the anchor point for the shoulder portion is six inches above my shoulder. This occurs on both sides of the vehicle, driver and passenger front seats. The seat belt runs across the left side of my neck when in the driver's seat, with the seat appropriately adjusted for my stature. If I raise the seat any higher I won't be able to reach the accelerator and brake pedals. Anyone who isn't tall would have this problem in the car. I'm concerned for my safety in a possible vehicle crash. I have recently reported this to Tesla Motors. No warning lights or messages are given in the vehicle for this problem.
The adaptive cruise control system routinely applies the brakes when there is no lead traffic on a completely open highway. I’ve had multiple instances where the car decelerated from 75 to 45 mph before I could react and press the accelerator to correct the state. During these events, the car does not indicate any type of emergency warning (no forward collision warning, no emergency braking warning). This poses enough of a safety risk to cars behind me that I will no longer use Tesla’s adaptive cruise control feature.
Auto wiper not functioning properly heavy rain with low speed wiping and full blast with light rain
While driving South on I75 near Tampa Florida using Autopilot the car suddenly decelrated to 10mph. There were no cars next to me and we were passing through a 6 lane area where the road splits. No distinguishing features, no cars on either side and we were heading slightly up hill. It seems like the cameras could only see the sky. Fortunately there was no car directly behind me. Very scary.
The adaptive cruise control slammed the brake when driving over a highway overpass. Tesla slammed the brake from 75 mph to 50 mph. Luckily there was no car behind. Clear sky around noon time.
The contact owns a 2023 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving approximately 62 MPH with the autopilot mode activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. There were no warning lights illuminated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 3,000.
Tesla model y 2023 phantom braked on the intestate. The emergency braking system and adaptive cruise are not correct. I almost got hit because my tesla auto pilot braked on the interstate for no reason.
This is the second instance of this issue happening, first at 1800 miles ODO, and second at 4690. Both instances, when driving, the vehicle suddenly and violently shuddered to a stop. The first instance happened as I pulled out from a stop sign to take an unprotected left onto a street. In the middle of the intersection, the car shuddered to a stop violently and a lot of warnings and alerts came up on screen. Cars moving both directions had to suddenly stop to not hit my car dead in the intersection. The gear stalk inputs to put the car in drive or reverse and allow function of the vehicle did not work. I pushed the park button on the right stalk and then moved it into drive, which it allowed. I was then able to limp the car out of the intersection (with power vastly reduced and speed reduced) and await a tow. The second instance I had pulled into a parking lot at around the same speed (~15 mph) in which the car again shuddered violently to a stop with no ability to override. Traffic behind me had to brake as to not hit my vehicle which stopped in the middle of the lot. Again the car was inoperable until this time locking and unlocking the car from outside of it and reentering to limp it to a parking spot for tow. Safety of myself and others were put severely at risk suddenly and without warning from the car stopping itself. If this were to happen in other, less fortunate scenarios, risk to human lives is great. Problem has been confirmed by Tesla service center, but not repr
Took 1st long trip with the Tesla. I had "phantom braking" happen 5 times while on the trip. Once on the way to the destination. Then, it happened 4 times on the return trip home in a span of 2 hours. This was in the first autopilot mode (Traffic-Aware Cruise Control), not the Autosteer version. Each time it happened on an open road in a rural area at a speed of around 70mph. This puts my vehicle and others at risk where someone that is close behind me would be surprised with a sudden decrease in speed and cause an incident. It also is nerve-wracking to the driver and passengers of the vehicle. This problem is known within the Tesla community and was reported to Tesla. The vehicle was "inspected" by looking at incidents in the cars software log. The Customer Service agent could not confirm any incidents and asked that I file a "bug report" through the car immediately after it happens again. There are no symptoms or warning of the problem - it happens at random.
New car with less than 1800 miles. Multiple times where The car will frequently and unexpectedly slam on the brakes while in autopilot on the highway. Almost caused an accident twice and I was terrified. Did not know about this problem but this can cause an accident.
Vehicle displayed alert “Powertrain requires service - vehicle speed and power may be limited” at 1664 odometer miles. Vehicle had to be towed to the service center and the cause was a faulty oil pump.
I got the delivery of the car VIN [XXX] on March 10 7 PM and got the car out and drive to home from Kennesaw tesla delivery center. On my way home the car stopped right after crossing the light signal at the intersection of Medlock bridge rd. and parson rd. And it does not move, I had to turn on the emergency lights to save myself from accident and the cop had come after some time. We were lucky to save ourselves without an accident as the car stopped all of the sudden and there was no car behind. I think this is a problem with the car and needs to be inspected and nobody should be in this situation in the future. I want to raise this as a safety concern please for Model Y in the very first hour after the delivery of the car. While driving acceleration pedal got loose and fell on the floor or the car.
Car was purchased December 30, 2022. The first time I engaged auto pilot, an oncoming semi was in its lane and my car slammed the brakes on while on auto pilot. It happened the next time I used auto pilot with zero perceived “threat”. I was extremely hesitant to use it, henceforth. I tried auto pilot over and over with my foot, poised and ready to take over the throttle, and my hand poised to disengage auto pilot. 12 times it slammed the brakes on-every time I used the feature it randomly braked, there was absolutely nothing around. These incidences were on two lane highways, no oncoming traffic, nothing in the road. Phantom braking. I do not feel safe using this feature on my brand new car because if someone is traveling behind me, it will cause an accident. I took my car in for minor service (for adjustment and stern issue) shortly after purchasing and mentioned this to the Tesla service Center representative. She said to me, “oh yeah, it does that sometimes. You have to be ready to take over.” Even being poised and ready to take over, I fear my reflexes will not be fast enough if there were someone traveling behind me at 60 mph. and it certainly isn’t how cruise control should work. I have a second service appointment, and actually noted the phantom braking (I subsequently learned this is what it’s called after googling, “random, braking with no threat Tesla model Y 2023”) on my service request to ensure that it has been documented because it’s a problem. A dangerous, unac
Bought 2023 Tesla Model Y on 29-Dec-2022. Noticed that when I am backing up the car, even when there is another car right behind, or any pedestrian crossing there was no warning. At first I thought some settings is turned off. Later, when I was changing lanes in freeway, no lane departure alert. Also no blind spot chime came on even though that option was turned on in settings. Almost I was about to crash into another car which was in my blind spot. I started googling and learnt that Tesla has removed ultrasonic sensors from Oct2022 onwards and they are working on Tesla Vision which is a camera based system. But Tesla vision is not ready as of 08-Mar-2023 when I am writing this. How is the 2023 Model Y manufactured without ultrasonic sensors and no Tesla vision passed basic safety test? I feel threatened every moment I drive the car without these basic safety features like rear object detection while backing up, lane departure alert, curb sensor alert, blind spot warning. I feel like I am driving a 2000 model old car which doesn't have any of these features. How does NHTSA deem Tesla cars manufactured after Oct22 safe on roads? I will be at financial burden and stress and risk of death without these basic features in a 70k+ car. Why is Tesla even allowed to make such low standard cars without any of the basic safety features? Attached screenshots of my chat with Tesla service also attaching the link Tesla support gave me as ref - https://www.tesla.com/en_eu/support/transition
The contact owns a 2023 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH with the Autonomous Self Driving feature activated, the vehicle abruptly stopped without warning. The contact was then able to accelerate, and the vehicle started operating normally. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The dealer was contacted, and the dealer stated that should the failure recur, the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted, and the manufacturer stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was 1,250.
3 days after purchase, headlights would not work, car towed to service center, both front headlight assemblies were replaced. 3 weeks after purchase, fault detected on passenger restraint, service center states passenger seat needs to be replaced to make airbag operational. I live 90 miles from service center, making these repairs quite difficult
I bought this Tesla model y in less than a month to be specific February 23th, I was forced to park the car due to rear motor failure. I had barely any time to find a parking lot before the car shot down on me. Until today, I have not gotten the car yet from Tesla due to long delay repair time.
We leased the brand new Model Y on Tuesday January 24th at Tesla, Rockville, MD. On Friday January 27th at approximately 4:30pm we were driving on RT773 Riverside Parkway in the right hand lane and the steering wheel came totally out of the column with wires and electronic exposed. I was able to slow the car down and the car went up on the curb. I kept trying to put the steering wheel back in the column and somehow managed to get it in enough to drive home which was 5 miles away. All of the electronics did not work. Tesla came and towed the car the same evening. There was no working warning. Tesla towed the car and the next day on Saturday said the bolt to the steering column was loose and became dislodged.
After just 250 miles on the car and just after one month of the purchase, my wife along with my 4 years old daughter was driving to get my 7 years old son from the school when it suddenly stopped on the road with displaying errors on the screen as follows, the car battery was sufficiently charged, later from the inspecting what it appeared that the "rear drive unit" of the car got screwed up. Warning and error messages were: "Acceleration and top speed reduced" "Power Reduced" There was a huge school traffic jammed behind the car, luckily other car owners offered help but the car was not moving, it stranded in the middle of the road. We contacted Tesla they towed the car after one hour of the call, they kept the car for a week and told us the whole new "rear drive unit" need to be replaced. After a frustrating experience they offered no replacement but to fix the car. I found another same incident with other customer here at the youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smVnwKOpuYY&ab_channel=JustAnotherModelYGuy
The USS Park Assist safety feature was eliminated from the vehicle without providing an alternative method or feature to monitor the front of the parked car in case an object or child was placed in front of the car after it was parked. The original USS Park Assist feature would detect this but the current Vision feature would not if the object or child is closer than 3 feet. It is irresponsible for a car manufacturer to eliminate a safety feature without providing a similar function as a substitute immediately. Just promising that this will come in the future should not be acceptable to the NHTSA. No problems have been recorded to date but this is just an accident waiting to happen. I'm asking the NHTSA to contact Tesla to require an immediate resolution.
The contact owns a 2023 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while at a stop with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated. The contact stated that no warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that she rear-ended the vehicle in front as she turned the steering wheel to the left and landed in a ditch. No air bags deployed. The contact stated that she and her front-seat passenger sustained no injuries however the other vehicle driver was seen by the EMTs on the scene. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an authorized Tesla Center and was awaiting diagnosis. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The contact stated that she was informed by the manufacturer that a diagnosis team was working on the diagnosis. The approximate failure mileage was 473.
We had 2 phantom breaking occurrences while in Autopilot traveling at 75 MPH within 10 minutes. The first time we were passing a pickup with trailer on the right and the in the second a pickup was passing us on the left. in both cases there were no other vehicles or objects on the road in front of us. If there was a vehicle following close behind us there could have been an accident. We did not come to a complete stop but I am not sure if that was because of Autopilot or my reaction. There were no other warnings.
I was driving on East on I-8 and was East of Yuma, AZ. I was using the enhanced auto pilot feature. I was traveling 70 miles per hour (5 below the speed limit) There were no autos in front of me and nothing on the shoulder. There was a semi truck behind me (I am not sure how far back.). My car suddenly put on the brakes and rapidly slowed down. (I am not what speed) The de-acceleration was so severe that my coffee cup too flew onto the floor. The semi truck was able to move to the right lane but blew his horn loudly. It was extremely scary and dangerous for both of us. I have done some research and this seems to be a problem that many Tesla owners are experiencing. This issue needs to be fixed immediately.
Vehicle brakes suddenly while driving even when there are no cars or obstacles of any kind in front or even in the distance. This has led to several events where I was almost rear-ended because of how strongly and violently the car was breaking on the highway. Last example was on March 5th 2023 at 1:19 p.m. while driving on interstate 90 in Ohio going westbound, there were no cars in front or in the distance in the lane. The car suddenly applied the brakes in a very strong fashion in the middle of the highway. There were at least five examples just like this one which happened prior.
Hello, I was taking my car reverse and my car door was open slightly and it hit my garage door, and that was my mistake. My only problem here is, the driver side rear window broke and it broke into MILLIONS OF PIECES and shattered all over inside.the car. Not sure what the technology is, and it should not break into millions of tiny, tiny pieces. It's a brand new car and struggling to clean it because they are no minute. Thanks
The Tesla Model Y Blind Spot warning system does not accurately detect the position of cars in the lanes next to the car. The display shows the car as behind the vehicle while it is actually at the rear quarter panel. There is only an audio warning if the turn signal is activated. The car is in the blind spot yet the system does not warn the driver. I took the car in for an adjustment to cameras and Tesla said they are functioning as designed. Tesla removed the radar sensors that aid in parking at low speeds. This was intended to be replaced with Tesla Vision. Tesla Vision functionality is not yet available. Although a low-speed collision with an object may not result in injury to a person, it is a safety feature that has been removed. The windshield wiper's speed cannot be adjusted or even started on the stock. To change speed or turn on the wipers you must look away from the road, locate the control panel and then select the desired speed. This clearly is a safety hazzard.
On February, Friday 17th, 2023 around 10:15pm on 287 exit ramp towards rte 78 west , a truck with a flatbed suddenly went from right to left but the car failed to detect that and we almost collide into the back of it. Collision was avoided only by driver reaction. All collision warning systems failed to detect the situation. Still this is the same behavior we have seen since we bought the car. There is no awareness of close proximity objects. Tesla is acknowledging that critical ultrasound sensors were removed from the car.
Intermittent shaking from the two front wheels while driving.
Driving 70mph on the highway, car abruptly clunked and three warning messages appeared. APP_W009 Automatic Emergency Braking is disabled; DIF_A062 Power reduced; and BMS_a170 Acceleration and top speed recuded. Car immediately dropped to 40mph and gave me enough time to exit the freeway to the shoulder. After putting in park, the car would no longer shift into any gear. Soft reset and full reset, exiting and re-entering the car didn't fix the issue. Tow required. Failure of rear motor (inverter) was cited in the service center. Seems to be a common issue across Model 3 (as far back as 2017), Model Y (deliveries in Nov/Dec 2022) and Model S (the last 3-4 years). Very dangerous if someone had hit us when it decelerated hard on the highway. Traveling with a 6yr old in a car seat. Only 500 miles on the car.
When using the cruise control function (not hands free) we have experienced multiple disconnects from the cruise control which puts the car into a sudden breaking condition slowing the car until the cruise control reconnects automatically. On a recent road trip we narrowly avoided a serious accident when this happened and we had a big rig truck behind us. We reported this to Tesla and their emailed reply said the cause was "map data, speed limit data, GPS position inaccuracies or predictive position inaccuracies." We drove over 2,500, mostly interstate highways, and in our opinion, none of their reasons for this condition apply to what happened to us. We set up an appointment with Tesla to look at the car but their email response seemed to indicate that as we drive the car more, the system will correct itself. In our opinion, this apparent software glitch is serious and can have fatal consequences. We have spoken with other Tesla owners and they are also aware of this chronic problem. We are reporting this matter in hopes that it will be investigated and promptly correctly before lives are lost.
The contact owns a 2023 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while his wife was driving in a parking lot, the vehicle independently accelerated as she depressed the brake pedal. The contact's wife crashed into another parked vehicle due to the failure. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact's wife experienced mental trauma due to the accident but did not need medical attention. A police report was filed. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with a safety feature known as "Sentry Mode", which recorded the movements of the vehicle. The contact stated that the feature recorded the movements except for the failure and the collision. The vehicle was towed to a Tesla service center where it remained in their possession. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but the contact was not provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 363.
Twice while driving in early afternoon on very bright days in the direction of the sun I've received forward collision alerts for no apparent reason. Due to adrenaline I don't remember if I slammed on my brakes or not, but I hope I did. Given that there was nothing in front of me for a substantial distance sudden braking for the alert would have been like a brake check had another vehicle been tailgating me. Date is for most recent occurrence, first occurrence was a few weeks ago.
This 2023 model Y has no collision warning. This was not what I expected when I purchased.
Driving on highway with cruise control activated. No traffic around. Experienced phantom braking taking me from about 80mph to 65mph before I was able to react. Had this happened in traffic there is a good chance i would have been rear ended. No notifications or emergency lights appeared on my dash.
This “phantom braking” issue MUST be resolved! This happens 2-4 times during a 700 mile trip. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE. At highway speeds or less with only the cruise control on the car will abruptly slow down as if there was something in front of me but nothing is there. A member of my family no longer wants to drive the car because of this. It’s scary. When it happens, she screams! Fortunately, no one has been behind me close enough to cause an accident. Once we had AEB automatic emergency, braking turned off and it STILL happened! It happens day and night, dusk, and dawn and 40 mph or 80 mph. If you were using cruise control, it can happen at any time.
Car did phantom breaking when I was driving with my wife, 2 kids and Niece from NJ to Pittsburgh, PA. I was driving on autopilot and There was no car in front or on side and yet it suddenly applied break and car went doen to appx 40 mph. Luckily the car behind was at distance and they managed their breaking well. I see it as a big risk to me and my family while being on long rides on autopilot.
In auto pilot mode , my Tesla suddenly applied emergency brake and brought my model y from 65 to 10 min in 287 Highway. Luckily they was no car or truck behind me. No car in front of me also.
While in Traffic Aware Cruise Control (adaptive cruise control), the vehicle will brake hard suddenly with no objects anywhere near it. This has happened primarily on the freeway and luckily no cars were following close enough behind to cause a collision. This is very concerning as it is occurs in inconsistent situations and is completely unpredictable.
On Saturday, February 11, 2023, my wife and I were driving on the highway. I was the driver and I was utilizing the adaptive cruise control set at approximately 75 mph, which is the speed limit. There were no vehicles or objects in the roadway in front of us when all of a sudden, the vehicle automatically braked hard. My wife and I were startled and thrust forward in our seats. I quickly pressed the accelerator and looked in my rear view mirror. I saw a red truck that had been behind me had to veer off into the shoulder of the road to avoid hitting me. Another vehicle was next to him in the passing lane and was also braking. This was very shocking and disturbing that we narrowly avoided a major crash. We had previously experienced this "phantom braking" during a roadtrip a few weeks ago. At that time, we reported the problem to our Tesla dealer and they sent a technician to our house on Feb 3, 2023. The technician told us that we were experiencing this phantom braking and all of the newer Tesla's had this problem. He assured me that the "engineers" were working on it and would have a solution soon. He further told me that there have been no reports of any accidents, injuries or deaths as a result of this phantom braking problem. That was reassuring at the time. With this latest incident, I find it hard to believe there have been no accidents. The only reason we did not have a bad wreck is because of the skill and attention of the driver behind us. We reported this latest inci
Was using the adaptive cruise control in addition to lane keeping assist, collectively known as Autopilot. Was in the left most lane with no cars in front or beside and a car about 5 car lengths behind when max auto regen occurred aka "phantom braking". There were no indications of obstacles in front based on the screen rendering.
When autopilot is engaged the car slows down without warning and there isn't anything in front of the car. We had close calls with cars behind us when the car applies the brakes for no reason. The wipers would come on for no reason and as long as the autopilot was on it couldn't be turn off. So we had to disengage the autopilot and turn off the wipers and drive another 300 miles without autopilot for our safety.
The contact owns a 2023 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the vehicle abruptly stopped independently. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,300.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
