2022 Tesla Model Y complaints

Hi, My main concerned about having a Tesla is not having warning beeping sound when reversing. I almost ran over someone because Tesla rear-view camera doesn't provide virtual alert/audio when getting too close to an object or if a pedestrian decides to walk behind your vehicle while you are about to reverse or pull in reverse into a parking space. I feel this should be a mandatory monitoring system for all Tesla when reversing, just like BMW or ACURA, you do get a beeping warning sound when there's something there or when vehicle is getting too close to any objects. Narrative November 18, 2022 At approximately 8:30 in the morning I was driving my new Tesla Model Y through the rolling hills of South Central Pennsylvania on I-70 heading to Breezewood in order to catch the Pennsylvania Turnpike West. Suddenly and without warning, the car began to break as hard as a car can brake without skidding. Almost like a full panic stop. The car must have stopped in four or five seconds from 60 miles an hour. I was in the left lane at the time and I tried to get over onto the shoulder but I was unable. The car came to a complete stop in the middle of the right lane. The car was in the center of the right lane and was completely locked up. I was unable to get it into neutral. I was unable to get it into a gear so I turned on the emergency flashers. Right behind me were three semis. The first one had to swerve to avoid me. The trailer almost flipped over into me. The semi behind him had to swerve to avoid me and thank God there were no cars in the left lane. The third semi had to take evasive action to get around me. I am grateful those three truck drivers were on the ball at that moment. After they went by, I got out of the car and ran up the hill to flag other trucks and cars to move into the left lane. The car had come to a stop on the other side of the top of a crest so cars and trucks didn't have much notice coming up on my car. Meanwhile, I called 911. I stood at the top of the crest for the better part of an hour and a half, maybe two hours waiti

It was snowing and I was driving down a hill going at least 5 miles an hour because there where at 10 cars in front of me. When I went to break the car, the breaks didn’t work and I slid the hill hitting to vehicles. The breaks would skip and wouldn’t lock.

Vehicle is approximately 9 months old with 13,488 miles. Starting today, the cruise control system which includes the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist features has failed. It will not activate, and attempts to activate it result in an error stating "cruise control unavailable." As a result, the car will not brake as it approaches other vehicles; will not maintain its speed; and will not maintain its lane. I made an appointment with the manufacturer's service center to have it inspected and repaired, but the manufacturer cancelled the appointment the same day it was made stating, in writing, that it is a "known issue," "replacing any component will not rectify the issue," and instead it "should be rectified in a future firmware update" without any time frame as to when. I asked is there is a service bulletin or recall notice and was advised that "specifics" cannot be provided "unless otherwise authorized."

Driving down road going about 46-50 mph at about 6:45pm tonight and the car suddenly slammed on brakes. Brakes locked, but thank goodness car behind me wasnt following close. My head/neck was jerked hard enough to cause headache and terrible soreness. I am very shaken. Came home and told my husband, took ibuprofen for my headache. He googled the problem, found this website. We are very concerned, since we own 2 Teslas and it seems people have the same complaints on both models we own.

Driving 70mph on the highway and the car lost control, spun three times before being able to regain control. The road was wet but not actively raining or rain piles seen.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V702000 (Visibility) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that after he exited the vehicle, the passenger’s side rear window inadvertently rolled up quickly, and the window failed to detect his son's hand on the window. No injuries were sustained. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

After my 3rd trip to tesla service (required 1 month wait each time I've had this problem since the first week) I video and audio recorded the tesla service team dropping my car off in an overflow lot for 2 and a half days before unplugging my dashcam on the 3rd day. 8 hours later I'm at the dealership and they tell me and I quote "left turns isn't a feature of FSD, just try not to use it anymore. By the way, they unplugged your camera. We found nothing wrong with your car after reviewing one whole day of footage, your cars out front." Then I get to the car and plug my dashcam back in immediately and the master key for all the Teslas is in my car (last time the same manager left their phone in my car and harassed me for hours while I was driving). Then I return the key to the manager on video, leave the parking lot, set my home destination, turn on FSD (Full Self Driving) and less than one mile away at the first turn the FSD makes it drives into oncoming traffic. This is probably the tenth time it has happened and I drive my family and passengers in this car so having to constantly bring it in and be told it has no problems after 10 total days in the shop has opportunity cost me between $2,500-$5,000 in lost revenue plus the intentional emotional infliction by gaslighting me the customer for basically not just letting my car kill me and other innocent people who didn't opt into Beta. While driving at freeway speeds, a vehicle cut me off. In order to avoid a collision, I pressed the brake pedal causing all brakes to lock up and the vehicle skidded. I felt the vehicle starting to hydroplane sideways over the dry surface and I heard the screech of the tires. I released the brake pedal, I felt the tires regain traction and I corrected the direction of travel. It was apparent that the ABS system did not function as intended. I contacted Tesla Service and they sent me a message stating that my vehicle needs to be repaired. I am still waiting for the estimate so I do not have specifics as to what needs to be repaired, but since they are having me take the vehicle to their shop, it appears that it can not be repaired over the air. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure.

I've brought the car into the dealership 3 times and they swear they have gone over the whole car and there are no issues with the car but at the first stop light next to the dealership the car starts driving into oncoming traffic which I recorded on dashcam. The car keeps phantom braking (braking for no reason) swerving towards concrete barriers and brick walls, driving into oncoming traffic on roads its navigated before in the same and different conditions. Just yesterday the indicator noises stopped working so I was forced to reset the car while driving my whole family, this is very dangerous and far too common. I have been harassed by Tesla employees who refuse to find any solution. I have been requesting a refund for FSD since the week I bought the car. This is a huge scam and cover up and when you post videos of your car trying to kill you on twitter or IG (post Elon) they shadow ban you. It is against their agenda. Don't believe the lies this is like ENRON x 1,000. FTX is NOTHING compared to the theft and deciet happening at Tesla.

Error in glass, broken when closing door

The lane departure warning goes off frequently and at random times when there is no issue with it at all. The windows are constantly malfunctioning and turning down when there is nothing obstructing the path of the window. The tail lights will go out at random times and will only be notified by other drivers particularly at night making the vehicle unsafe to operate and unreliable.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, he experienced "phantom braking" and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with a computer failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,500.

I floored the accelerator, and heard a pop. The pedal then remained depressed about 50% of the pedal travel. I was able to drive the car normally, but only using about 50% of the pedal range to do so. I took it to Tesla for service and after diagnosis, had to replace the accelerator and brake pedal assembly. The mounting plate that held both pedals broke. They said it was impossible to break by stepping on either the brake or accelerator. An “outside force” must have caused the failure and they refused to cover the part and labor under warranty.

On 11/17/2022 about 6pm when I drive on highway I -5 from San Diego to irvine, I am driving in the middle of the lane, the car keeps on going to the left and almost hitting the wall when I was on the left lane. I moved to the third lane and the car tried to do the same thing. At one point I lost the control of the car and it suddenly changed to the lane on my left. Fortunately there is no car on my left at that time. I used basic cruise control at that time, not Auto pilot .I have lane departure avoidance on at that time, not sure what's going on. The girl I carpool with said the lanes displayed in the screen is very clear. After I got off the highway, we checked the front camera and it is clean. My husband turned off lane departure avoidance function and restarted the PC of Tesla. We drove in the highway again and Tesla behavior is normal.

Went to get my state vehicle inspection and had heard a noise actually from the time I picked the car up new at dealer. The noise sounded like something rattling in the "frunk" down by front driver wheelwell. I thought nothing if it until the state inspector at the Tesla focused shop in Londonderry NH called me from waiting room and showed me on the lift what the noise was. He showed me what I now know is called a "jam nut" on the tie rod end of the front driver wheel. It was not even touching the actual tie rod end to hold it in place. I noticed after he tightened it the steering wheel became tighter slightly in a good way. The noise I heard was gone since picking the car up as well. This concerns me greatly. I am not sure if other nuts or bolts are correctly set on the suspension or even throughout the car as the robot or human device attaching bolts may have had a muscalibrated device and this likely is not limited to one nut on one vehicle unless it was simply gross human incompetence.

I have Full Self Driving I paid $12,000 for and immediately wanted a return upon receiving the car it doesn't work as described. Tesla declined to refund me for the FSD software months ago. I have brought the car into service 3 times now and Tesla each time says there is nothing wrong with the car despite 5,000 gigabits of my own dashcam footage showing the car driving me into oncoming traffic, swerving towards concrete barriers, not seeing 5 people in a cross walk when turning at 25 mph, randomly SLAMMING on the breaks and much more. The touchscreen will freeze leaving the driver with no turn signals, no speedometer etc. I feel like the car is possessed trying to kill me, I am a full time Uber driver. Tesla service manager tells me with a straight face "just don't use it." "just don't make any left turns". The front facing camera keeps rattling so I pulled the Teslacam footage and the camera is so blurry you can barely see anything so I bring it in for service and they say nothing is wrong. This is beyond dangerous this is a dereliction of duty that will result in lost lives, NHTSA you MUST intervene I have already alerted my Governor and State Attorney, they have verified they have received my testimony. I make a choice every day to get in a car I know is trying to kill me or not be able to feed my family. I was driving on I-70 in Colorado, heading westbound. I had the vehicle in basic "cruise control" speed mode. No autosteer or anything like that. Our of the blue, the car jammed on the brakes on its own, as if it was about to hit something. However, there were no vehicles in the area. It was a significant reduction in speed. Probably from 65-35. Luckily, there wasn't anybody behind me. It was scary, to say the least. There were no warnings prior to the episode. I believe that this is referred to as "phantom brakes". I have been experiencing repeated episodes of phantom braking in which the vehicle will suddenly reduce speed, typically without any other vehicles in the vicinity. I routinely drive from Twin Falls to Boise, which is a distance of about 130 miles, and it regularly happens at least twice. In some instances the speed has dropped suddenly by 15 - 20 mph, which is very frightening, but in other cases the speed only drops by 3 - 4 mph. In all instances there is no reason for the braking. However, the other day it happened with a semi-truck behind me, creating a potentially dangerous situation. This has happened with both cruise control and autopilot. This has been happening since I first purchased the vehicle, which was two months ago. I have 5,000 miles on the vehicle.

Car was at freeway speed (~70mph) and on cruise control, and out of nowhere the brakes were applied by themselves very abruptly. I was almost rear ended on the freeway as a result.

Alert was coming randomly while driving the car about several safety systems being disabled automatically without any audible notifications. Alert clears up after the car is locked for several minutes. Below is the alert message.. Automatic emergency braking disabled Automatic Vehicle Hold disabled Traction control disabled Stability control disabled Cruise control disabled This makes the car suddenly unsafe to drive if you are not paying attention to the screen. I have been on the road driving car at 60-70MPH several times when this happened. This can turn in to an accident. I provided the information and created a service appointment at Tesla which took a month before they can get me a scheduled appointment. Tesla fixed the issue with below note after further review. "A loose connection in the area of the steering gear was causing severe communication problems between the stability controller and the autopilot computer." The contact merged into another lane to regain control of the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,200.

While driving down the highway, the Tesla slammed on the brakes automatically, with significant force, for no reason.

Automatic braking without obstructing vehicles or obstacles while using both the Traffic Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer functions. Occurs multiple times per drive and has occurred on multiple drives. Occurs without warning and places following drivers at risk. Renders these features unusable.

Phantom braking occurs in the Tesla Model Y when the vehicle’s TACC system is engaged. This is not auto drive, this is the systems Traffic Aware Cruise Control. Unexpected Braking occurs decreasing “cruise speed” approximately 8-11 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. On a trip from the Dallas TX area to the Colorado Springs area, this unexpected phantom braking occurred approximately 3 dozen times on open highway and in clear, sunny weather. This is a major safety concern as this brisk deceleration can cause the vehicle to be rear-ended by vehicles following the Tesla.

On the Highway with cruise control on, the vehicle suddenly braked multiple times when nothing was in front or behind me. There was a truck one time in the next lane.

255/45R19 104W XL. I had a flat tire right in the middle of a fast perfectly smooth highway while traveling with a baby, the car is just beyond a month old and it seems the TPMS system failed and the tire has to be replaced at the customer's cost.

Unexpected braking. This occurred several times on a long trip. Each time we we're on a bridge or other structure close to the roadway.

Phantom breaking on autopilot on highways

The AutoPilot or Full Self Driving malfunctions by suddenly braking for no apparent reason. Going from 70mph to 50mph on a busy highway can cause cars in the back to crash into my car. Along a two lane road the car suddenly started braking and veered right when a large 18 wheeler passed in the opposite lane. Causing cars behind to suddenly brake to avoid hitting my car. Another time car suddenly braked because there was a change in color where the road had been patched and there was a slight dip in the road. The problem has been confirmed by many other drivers and NHTSA is looking to the issue. I do not know what the Tesla Company is doing about this problem. There was no warning before the sudden braking happened.

I have been experiencing phantom braking on my Tesla Model Y. It is a new vehicle, which I purchased at the end of September 2022. While driving with cruise control activated, the emergency braking will suddenly engage bringing the car to a sudden slowdown/ stop. This has happened on multiple occasions.

Travelling 101 North from Los Angeles to Solvang. I was driving with tesla auto piloit set at 65mph. Middle of the highway, no vehicles around, no bridges or any shadows from anything. Tesla model y braked from 65mph to 20mph suddenly without warning. Serious safety issue, had a vehicle been following me i would have been rear ended.

Driving from L.A. to S.F. on I-5 yesterday, we twice experienced phantom braking while using Autopilot. In both cases, there was no car close in front of us. The system just malfunctioned and suddenly braked from maybe 70 to 55 or even 50, which feels very dangerous in case a car behind us might not notice and rear-end us. It was late afternoon and we were driving somewhat into the sun. It feels like it might have something to do with sun angle and the fact that there was no car in front of us. There were also some mirages on the road that it might have mistaken for a car.

I started my car and drove out of the parking lot of my apartment complex. I was trying to drive to the grocery store. At that time, the car's auto-pilot and navigation features were not on. After turning onto the main road near my apartment complex, I turned on the car's auto-pilot feature. I did not turn on the navigation feature. But the car suddenly started navigating to my work address anyway. I wanted to keep driving straight on the main road, but the car immediately turned left to go into a side street that I was already passing. The car sped up when it turned, and I did not have enough time to change direction or to break. The car steered into a tree off of the main road. I attached photos to the claim form.

When engaging cruise control on the highway we experienced phantom braking 2 times in 90 seconds while on an empty road. This was the first time we ever used the cruise control on the highway. The braking was aggressive, and enough to strain the passenger neck. It was scary and without warning. We feel it is too dangerous to use cruise control on our vehicle ever again for feet of causing an accident.

While adaptive cruise control, braking occurs unexpectedly. Might be related to hills, seems somewhat repeatable. Scares the snot out of you when you are doing 80 miles per hour on autopilot/cruise control and your car just stars braking.

I have a new 2022 Tesla Model Y and in less than 500 miles it has already "phantom emergency braked" on 5 separate occasions. The conditions was freeway driving, no traffic within 200-300 yards, daytime, and the geography was gentle rolling hills with little to no vegetation. On all occasions my speed was set at 75-80 mph. The events ranged from momentary autopilot brake application slowing the vehicle about 10 mph to very aggressive autopilot braking slowing the vehicle 30-40 mph. There are no other warning lamps, messages, or pre or post symptoms. Of course it goes without saying how dangerous this is especially if there were a vehicle following closely behind. Tesla is very aware of this problem. This particular vehicle, being brand new, has not had a service appointment to date but I am in the process of setting one up.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request: Auto high beams; car is available for inspection How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk: In Arlington Heights, IL the car started automatically switching the high beams on and off. At first the auto high beams would engage for 7-10 seconds, then disengage for 7-10 seconds. Then the auto high beams engaged for 2-4 seconds and disengage for 2-4 seconds, as if flashing them. This is unsafe as it is distracting to the driver (me), it can obstruct the view of oncoming traffic, and it makes it appear as if I am driving erratically which can result in a traffic stop / unnecessary police intervention. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center - no, they will not take the vehicle in to their service center and only provided mobile service appointments during the work day. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others - no Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear - the car was recently serviced (October 5, 2022) for a nonfunctioning A/C compressor and heating pump. I am not aware of what other service / software changes+resets were made to the car while out of my possession.

Vehicle phantom braked while I was on the highway. Someone could have rear-ended me as it happened out of nowhere.

I was using the Autopilot feature on highway and my car experienced phantom break.

While driving on the interstate with the cruise control on the car suddenly applied the brakes. There were no other cars around and no objects on the roadway. This happened twice without warning on 10/09/2022. I have not reported this issue to Tesla yet but plan to.

My 2022 Model Y has severe phantom braking problems when cruise control or auto steer is activated. While driving at highway speeds the car slams on the brakes for no reason. This happened several times in 50 miles. I spoke to many other Tesla owners with the same problem. While driving at 70 mph on the interstate the car will suddenly and instantly apply the brakes hard. This is a severe safety issue. I am so scared that this will cause an accident that I have stopped using the cars adaptive cruise control and auto steer functions. I have contacted Tesla like everyone else, but have not gotten a response or fix. Component Failure A/C Compressor / Heat Pump + Defogger / Defroster Safety Risk Windshield visibility was limited. With climate control limited was extremely hot in vehicle and resulted in physical discomfort / distractions while driving Problem Confirmation Yes, was confirmed. Dealer allegedly replaced "A/C Compressor (Heat Pump)" Component Inspection Unable to personally inspect component Warning Lamps / Messages 0/1/22 ~12PM – driving and received notification that “Cabin climate control system requires service – Cabin heating / cooling limited or unavailable” VCFRONT_a447 error Issue did not correct itself App showed car climate control as “LO”; car would only start with climate control set to “LO” Defogger did not work; windshield visibility limited, had to wipe inside of windshield with towel which created streaks and decreased visibility. Wipers to remove condensation from outside Heated seats and heated steering wheel would automatically be turned on when car was started

My model Y 2nd row seats are not latching. I keep getting warning ⚠️ alerts. My vehicle been in Tesla service center posesiones since July,2022. Currently still with Tesla Service for repair.

Phantom breaking happened 5 times interstate 8 Car slowed braked from 84mi to 55 mi no worning. Nothing on road close to car. Clear highway.

Intermittently the ability to interact with my touch screen has stopped. This means I cannot access crucial vehicle controls while moving. After trying to get a service appointment to address, Tesla claims that this should be resolved in a future software update but refuses to give a timeline for the release while I continue to have to drive my vehicle in an unsafe manner.

Driving on the interstate going 85 in autopilot with no other cars around and the car slammed on the brakes. Nothing in the road.

While driving highway speeds with the cruise control on, car suddenly brakes. No vehicle or obstacle was in front of us. This happened approximately 6 times in 200 miles. 5 of the 6 times happened on the interstate in a rural area.

Traveling on a three lane highway at normal traffic speeds, at night with little to no traffic, the Traffic Aware Cruise Control (TACC) would activate braking with no identifiable reason. The braking is significant and would pose a danger to those vehicles that may be directly behind. For me this occurs mostly during night time driving because I tend to use the TACC when there is little traffic on the highway. I fear using the TACC during daytime due to the amount of traffic on New Jersey highways. The car is 100% drivable when TACC is not engaged.

On a 350 mile trip between Boise, ID and Salt Lake City, UT, we experiences four incidents of braking for no reason while using the adaptive cruise. No autopilot or full self driving functionality was engaged. The vehicle applied the brakes while at speeds of 80mph+ and it causes a violet slow down sometimes dropping 20mph very quickly requiring the driver to apply the gas to increase speed to meet the speed or traffic. This is a safety concern due to potential for being rear-ended, the violent nature could cause the driver to lose control, or cars following behind may think we are trying to 'brake-check' them in an aggressive manner. The problem has been reported previously, our vehicle has not been inspected. No warnings appeared.
