NHTSA campaign 23V740000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Gillig, LLC: Power Train › Driveline › Driveshaft

Gillig, LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 3, 2023 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 4,286. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Gillig, LLC (Gillig) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Low Floor transit buses. The transmission yoke may separate, resulting in driveshaft separation and a sudden loss of drive power.

The risk

A sudden loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, a disabled bus may require an evacuation procedure in an uncontrolled traffic situation, increasing the risk of injury to passengers.

The remedy

Gillig will work with the equipment manufacturer, Allison Transmission Inc., to inspect and tighten the transmission yoke bolts, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 11, 2023. Owners may contact Gillig customer service at 1-510-264-5073 or 1-800-735-1500.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 23V740000.
