NHTSA campaign 07V401000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Mack Trucks, Inc: Fuel System, Diesel

Mack Trucks, Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 5, 2007 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 35,649. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH ASET AC MODEL ENGINES, THE ENGINE AS CONFIGURED WITH AN EXTERNAL EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM MAKES SERVICING THE FUEL INJECTION LINES DIFFICULT WHEN USING TRADITIONAL TOOLS. THEREFORE, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR FUEL LEAKS TO DEVELOP WHEN REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE FUEL INJECTION LINES.

The risk

A LEAK IN THE FUEL INJECTION LINE MAY SPRAY FUEL ON THE HOT SURFACES OF THE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM, WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ENGINE FIRE.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL INJECTION LINES FREE OF CHARGE. NOTE: THIS RECALL SUPERSEDES A PREVIOUS CAMPAIGN CONDUCTED IN 2006 (PLEASE SEE 06V392). THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2007, WITH SUBSEQUENT MAILINGS EVERY SIX WEEKS UNTIL APRIL 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MACK AT 800-528-6586.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 07V401000.
