American Suzuki Motor Corp.: Electrical System › Ignition › Switch
American Suzuki Motor Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 29, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 5,869. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN SCOOTERS, IF THE IGNITION SWITCH IS NOT FULLY TURNED FROM THE 'OFF' TO THE 'ON' POSITION, THERE MAY BE UNSTABLE CONTACT BETWEEN THE IGNITION SWITCH CONTACTS. THIS CAN CAUSE ARCING IN THE IGNITION SWITCH.
The risk
HEAT FROM THE ARCING CAN MELT THE INTERNAL SWITCH BASE PLATE. IF THE SCOOTER IS RIDDEN IN THIS CONDITION, THE IGNITION SWITCH MAY FAIL. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE ENGINE WILL STALL, THE LIGHTS WILL GO OUT, AND THE OPERATOR MAY BE UNABLE TO RESTART THE SCOOTER. THIS COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH TERMINAL CASE ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 7, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SUZUKI AT 1-800-255-2550.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V372000.
