NHTSA campaign 05V309000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Keystone RV Company: Wheels

Keystone RV Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 6, 2005 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,668. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN FIFTH WHEEL TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH 16", 6-BOLT ALUMINUM WHEEL OPTION WITH 5.5" BOLT CIRCLES, FOREIGN MATERIAL MAY BE PRESENT IN THE 'CLAMP JOINT' (MATING SURFACE BETWEEN THE WHEEL AND HUB FACE. THIS CAN HINDER THE PROPER TORQUE OF THE LUG NUTS IF THE NUTS ARE NOT INSTALLED WITH THE PROPER TORQUE DURING MANUFACTURE, RE-TIGHTENED DURING THE INITIAL 'SEATING IN' PERIOD AND/OR THERE IS A FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES.

The risk

IF THE LUG NUTS DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT TORQUE, THE WHEEL COULD SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REMOVE ALL PAINT AND FOREIGN MATERIAL FROM THE WHEEL AND HUB MATING SURFACE. THEN THE LUG NUTS WILL BE PROPERLY TORQUED. THE RECALL BEGAN SEPTEMBER 7, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KEYSTONE AT 1-574-535-2100.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 05V309000.
