NHTSA campaign 00V148000 · Part 573 safety recall report

International Truck and Engine: Steering › Hydraulic Power Assist › Pump

International Truck and Engine reported this defect to federal regulators on May 23, 2000 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 4,534. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL/TRANSIT BUSES AND MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS. THE CASTINGS USED ON THE POWER STEERING PUMPS WERE NOT BUILT TO MATCH THE ENGINEERING DRAWINGS, RESULTING IN A THIN WALL IN THE PUMP CASTING OR A COMPLETE CONNECTION OF TWO PASSAGES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SEPARATED TO CONTROL FLUID FLOW. THE FLUID FLOW MAY BE REDUCED TO LESS THAN THE MINIMUM REQUIRED FLOW RATE TO PROVIDE FULL POWER ASSIST TO THE BRAKE SYSTEM WITH LOW ENGINE SPEED.

The risk

AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE AT SLOW ENGINE SPEEDS CAN RESULT, INCREASING THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE ALL PUMPS THAT HAVE THE DEFECTIVE CASTING NUMBERS.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 00V148000.
