Abs and traction control lights keep coming on. And the cruise control will not work. Dealer can’t find any codes
2017 Ram 2500 complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2017 record →
I continually get the ABS warning light lilting up on my dashboard screen along with a sway control light. The obvious risk is the failure of the braking system especially on hard braking situations or slippery roads. This risks injury and/or death to myself and any passengers as well as vehicles traveling in my vicinity. This is a well known problem with dealers as well as many owners. The same issue has been identified in newer versions of the same vehicle and been recalled. The issue has been identified as a malfunction with the hydraulic brake control unit and the anti-lock brake system module. This is a problem already known to the manufacturer and is also the subject of a class action lawsuit in California. This safety issue should certainly be resolved by the manufacturer by a recall in an expeditious manner.
ABS and Traction Control lights keeping going off constantly and cruise control can't be used either when this occurs. States this has something to do with the ABS Brake control module. However, there are discontinued parts for this replacement. I travel alot with this vehicle and Tow heavy equipment. This issues NEEDS to be resolved ASAP!!
Keep getting an intermittent ABS failure / check brake system light, which also turns off the cruise control. Ram says may need replacement of hydraulic control unit, but no parts available.
Pulling loaded livestock trailer on interstate at highway speed (65 mph) using cruise control in 2017 Ram 2500 diesel pickup when experienced rapid deceleration as the result of ABS/HCU failure. This rapid deceleration caused vehicles behind me to skid trying to avoid a rear end collision with my vehicle. Confirmed with Ram dealership that ABS/HCU module had failed causing the cruise control to shutoff and that replacement was necessary. The people in my vehicle, the animals in my trailer and others driving on the highway were all put at risk of serious bodily harm or even death as a result of this unit failure.
While driving the trucks ABS and wheel speed sensor warning lights will intermittently alarm. While alarming I do not have ABS or cruise control function.
The service antilock brake system/ service electronic braking system lights began turning on and off intermittently around August of 2022. These would sometimes be prompted or exacerbated by wet driving conditions or bumps, but often just at random while driving. At the beginning of the issue, vehicle had roughly 48,000 miles. After paying for diagnosis, the failed part was deemed to be the ABS pump motor-general electrical failure, code C0020-0 as well as code C006C-9A for stability system component failure. Being RAM dealer-only parts and needing software flashes for installation, this repair costs between $1000 and $2000 USD. This failure leaves these HD trucks without ABS systems (functioning systems are required in many states for vehicle safety inspections). The cherry on top of this situation is the replacement parts are unavailable nation-wide as FCA "switches manufactures". This leaves the ABS inoperable and the trucks completely unsafe with absolutely NO alternative actions. No loaner vehicles offered, no recourse for failing safety inspections, nothing. Many folks use these as business or work trucks, depend on them, and have no choice but to keep driving with the issue as-is. This is a blatant hazard and needs to be corrected as soon as possible.
The indicator lights for abs and traction control appeared, and the driver information panel stated a problem with the abs electronic control. I am uncertain if this will lead to a failure in the braking of my truck. This problem was repaired twice by a Ram dealer; the most recent being on October 4, 2022. I have learned this is an issue that was recalled on the 2019-2020 models, and there is a class action lawsuit in relation to the 2017-2018 models.
Service Electronic Brake system and ABS unavailable lights constantly. Brakes locked up while towing a trailer. This apparently is a known problem that Ram refuses to recall. $1500 to $1800 to fix a known faulty part is unreasonable and is going to make people choose to continue to drive with the warning light on because it is too expensive to repair.
HCU for ABS brake system has now failed for a second time. They can not even supply a part to repair. Now on back order hold til 02/2024. So I have to risk driving with no abs system until then and not certain if it will be extended again. This is a known issue for RAM. They should fix this and put out a recall and reimburse me for time and repairs. I hope no one gets killed for this. Alot of Rams on the road just like me now.
Intermittent ABS/ HCU problems with no solution from the manufacture
I have a 2017 RAM 2500. The abs and traction control light are flashing on and off SEVERAL times each trip. It kicks my cruise off and sometimes stays on. The EVIC display showed Service Antilock Braking System and alternated to Service Electronic Brake System. It would constantly bing and display the ABS light and the Traction Control light. seems a recall should be mandatory for replacement of the 68437098AB Module Anti Lock Brake System and the 68143491AA Control Anti Lock Brake System or whatever is causing this issue. it is a safety issue.
ABS control module failed 3 times in under 39000 miles. First instance was repaired under warranty in 02/2019 with control unit replaced. Second instance was repaired out of warranty in 03/2020. Third instance of failure occurred in 08/2023. Symptom of failure is ABS/TC indicator light repeatedly flashing and warning sound in cabin. The repeated warning makes the vehicle undriveable for any length of time. It is unclear if the ABS is actually functioning as I would not drive in poor traction conditions with this warning. The ABS control module or related wiring in this truck is defective and the repairs implemented by Chrysler/Dodge/RAM do not resolve the problem. Replacing the ABS control unit is a temporary solution as the unit will fail with identical symptoms 1-3 years later.
Ive had issues where by ABS fails and the problem is a faulty hydraulic control unit and abs module. They are a very common issue with 2017 and 2018 model years on the forums I'm on and theyre backordered from so many people trying to fix the issue repeatedly.
Service electronic braking system and service ABS System is intermittently coming on and off with the vehicle every time it is driven.
Abs and traction control lights come on and off after hitting bumps or just randomly. Started in the winter and it would disable 4WD which is not acceptable since this is a plow vehicle. Problem has gotten worse over time with the lights coming on and off multiple times per trip. The problem is available for inspection anytime. Without 4wd in snowy conditions(also rainy withour abs) others are in danger. i have had my mechanic look into it, we have not come up with a solution yet. Not inspected by manufacturer. multiple warning lights on a daily basis, failure is intermittent.
ABS system cuts on and off continuously.
I have 2017 Dodge ram 2500.12/09/19 the anti lock brake system control and hcu module was replaced under warranty. Now august 2023 with 27,900 miles the same problem has occurred with the dealer recommending the ABS control module and HCU be replaced. the parts will not be avaiable until January 2024. If a Abs module failure is not serious what is. A check of the internet shows a tremendous amount of complaints of this issue. there is even a class action lawsuit in California. I have spoken with Ram Care and they dropped my case as soon as they found out the part was backordered until January. I have all the dealer documentaion if needed. Please look into this problem before crashes start occuring.
HCU failure causing abs faults and traction control faults, intermittently. Part required is not available and dealerships Say this is an ongoing issue with these trucks. Just hit 50,000 miles on vehicle, changed front brakes, Rotors and pads as well as the front Wheel Speed Sensors.
The truck’s warning lights indicated failures in the Anti-lock brake system module, HCU module, and cruise control. Truck experience issues such as the loss of anti-lock braking, cruise control, and traction control. These missing features and systems significantly compromise the control and handling of the Ram trucks, particularly in adverse weather conditions like wet or snowy roads, where braking becomes more challenging. Replaced the HCU and Mod once 8-1-2022 already and within 10k miles it has failed again.
While towing with my 2017 RAM 2500 the "Service electronic braking system" and "Service antilock braking system" began to intermittently flash on my gauge cluster/instrument panel. The message and lights would continually flash on and off while driving over various road conditions (rough, smooth, flat, inclines, declines). My families safety (myself, wife and son) was at risk with the potential for a brake or braking system failure while towing our travel trailer, as well as the safety of others on the road around us in the event of our braking system failing. I began doing research on this error message and found the NHTSA investigation and link to report the issue. I am going to speak to my local dealer today 8/24/23 regarding repairs.
My 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins pick-up truck started displaying symptoms of a bad HCU module several months ago, "Service Electronic Braking System" warning message, ABS dash light indicating loss of ABS, and Traction Control Light indicating loss of traction control, as well as kicking the vehicle out of Cruise Control when this set of condition lights are, albeit intermittently illuminated. There are times where these condition light persist for long periods of time from several hours to several days, and then times when these condition lights aren't present and will only intermittently come on and then times when these lights blink/ding on and off constantly for several minutes until it comes to rest in an always on state or an intermittent state. After having the issue confirmed by a third-party reputable mechanic shop AND a RAM Dealership Service department I was told the module is on backorder. Being that it is a safety system I don't trust the "aftermarket parts industry" to provide me with authentic manufacturer trusted equipment. Which leaves me encumbered with the stress and risk of having to operate my vehicle with unreliable ABS, Traction Control, Cruise Control. This is beyond a unique to me issue as there are plenty of well documented cases of RAM 2500-3500 series vehicle with this issue as well as a recall on the 2019 & up series of the same. So why would they not issue the recall for the other trucks with this safety issue? Condition persists at any speed regardless
My 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins Mega Cab pick-up truck started displaying symptoms of a bad HCU module several months ago, "Service Electronic Braking System" warning message, ABS dash light indicating loss of ABS, and Traction Control Light indicating loss of traction control, as well as kicking the vehicle out of Cruise Control when this set of condition lights are, albeit intermittently illuminated. There are times where these condition light persist for long periods of time from several hours to several days, and then times when these condition light aren't present and will only intermittently come on and then times when these lights blink/ding on and off constantly for several minutes until it comes to rest in an always on state or an intermittent state. Service antilock braking system and service electric braking system constantly flashes off and on as if there is a short and all I can do apparently (according to the dealer) is replace the module which is Astronomically priced! Apparently there are a lot of people having this issue. As far as the steering it has been loose since the beginning as there is 2½" of play and everyone blames the steering box but I have invested way to much chasing the problem with no luck.
68143491abHYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT 68347098abMODULE. ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM Failed and no repair parts for 7 or 8 months
Abs module has failed for the second time in 3 years. Dealership will not pay for it.
ABS Module failed. Lost abs function. Lost traction control and cruise control i also got 2 warning lights in the dash for ABS and traction control. Was confirmed by genes Chrysler Ram of fairbanks AK. First appeared July 24th 2023
72,000 miles on vehicle. Received error messages - service electronic brake system and service abs brake system. The error is intermittent and causes loss of ABS functionality and a potential safety hazard. The repair is to replace the ABS system Module (68437098AB) and the ABS Modulator (68143491AA). This is not a small repair. From reading on the internet, this is component defect and a reoccurring problem on these vehicles, and the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge this as a problem. I am recommending that the NHTSA consider this as a recall.
HCU failure causing abs faults and traction control faults. Part required is not available and dealerships Say this is an ongoing issue with these trucks.
Intermittent alert to "Service Electronic Braking System" and "Service ABS System". Will cycle on and off multiple times in a row 3-4 times per minute. Sometimes will go 30 minutes without alert or will stay illuminated. Research of RAM TSB S2005000004 suggests failure of ABS Hydraulic Control Unit and/or ABS Control Module. Commonly reported issue. When illuminated, cruise control does not work. It appears that anti-spin and stability control are inactive.
While driving down the road my vehicles ABS and Traction control light go on and off, most of the time the lights are stuck on. Causing the vehicle to not have ABS and traction control during the rain and snow months of the year an further more the cruise control does not work. At this point the truck is unsafe to drive in all conditions as it does not retain its safety braking systems, I will not put my family in the vehicle. Moving forward ask my local Ram dealer about the repairs and they say they can not get the parts they have been on back order.
First got an Service Antilock Brake System and Stability Control light. A couple days later, lost speedometer and park sense lights came on along with "Service Trailer Brakes", but I haven't had a trailer hooked up to this truck ever.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving in inclement weather at approximately 65 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the ABS failed to operate as needed. The traction control and ABS warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was determined that the ABS module and hydraulic control unit (HCU) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,500.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the service electronic brake control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the ABS control module and pump. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to assist. The failure mileage was 165,000. The VIN was not available.
ABS warning light is on. Vehicle taken to dealer for the issue 10-OCT-2022. Dealer confirmed that the hydraulic control unit had failed. Dealer stated part was on backorder until December 2022. Part did not come in. Dealer stated in May 2023 that part was still on backorder and that Ram was aware of the issue and had it under engineering review. (part number 68143491AB)
ABS and Traction control light come on, code states ABS module general electric failure.
ABS CONTROL MODULE AND HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT FAILING. REPLACED COMPONENTS IN 2021 AND 2022 AND FAILING AGAIN IN 2023. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IF THESE UNITS FAIL THEN IT CAUSES LOSS OF ANTILOCK BRAKING AND SPEED CONTROL
I have replaced my right rear ABS wheel speed sensor 2 times and still having issues. Cruise control or 4x4 does not work when abs light is on and with 4x4 not working it can leave you stranded if 4x4 is needed
My truck has intermittently had an abs issue which was uncommon. Now the problem is persistent no abs no traction control it seems my rear brakes are not working at all. I read many articles of the same issue.... and what's worse is it seems they discontinued the part. Currently I am unable to fix the problem without parts. I can't afford another vehicle or I would just trade it in and take the loss. Ram isn't providing any real solutions.
Turn on the truck and the ABS/Traction Control lights are off, drive the truck, and with no consistency, the ABS and traction control come on and off. It does not matter if it is raining/wet or sunny, around a turn or straight the lights turn on and off on their whim. When the lights are on the truck has different braking characteristics than when the lights are off. The truck stops in a longer time frame and the brakes seem as if they have less braking power or are soft compared to them when the lights are off.
Abs and traction control lights going off and on . Had pump and control module replaced april 2022.Now it showing same problem 9000 miles later.
The ABS module in our 2500 Cummins has been serviced multiple times since purchasing and is still throwing service codes. We have a child and need to be sure that this module is working properly. We know this module has been recalled in the 2019-2022 models.
ABS, Traction control light came on. Shut down 4wd, parking assist, cruise control. Trucks not braking evenly. Feels like differential is locked
Vehicles ABS and Traction Control lights randomly turn on and off. This has been happening for about three months now.
While driving the light and warning signal for the ABS Brakes and Traction Control go on and off intermittently. Another indicator comes on that says the ABS brakes need servicing. This can happen at almost anytime. If on the highway with cruise control on and the lights come on the cruise drops out and the vehicle slows quickly, hopefully no one has run into the back of the truck, because it happened at 65 mph on Monday. I had the codes checked and it says the pump motor for the ABS is at fault, stored code DTC C0020-01. The ABS pump assembly had to be ordered on March 10, 2020 and was replaced under warranty once already on March 25, 2020, 16015 miles for the same thing, and the part had to be ordered. The vehicle now has 20360 miles on it and it is my understanding that the part is on backorder for quite some time. There must be a problem with the part or they would be in stock at least so it can be ordered. This is a safety concern of mine being the brakes may not work properly and when it shuts off at highway speed with the cruise on, there could be an accident due to the vehicle slowing fairly quick. I would like to be able to drive the truck safely. This truck is unsafe to drive now and it is not covered by warranty. Needs to be a recall, manufacturer needs to look into this situation and fix it.
ABS module and, hydraulic control unit bad at 36,500 miles on vehicle
ABS / electric brake assist turns off and on randomly
I took my 2017 Ram 2500 to my local dodge dealer because my service ABS light has come on. After paying 150.00 for a diagnostic test, they concluded that 2 ABS parts needed to be replaced. My ABS does not work and the parts are backlogged in the supply chain. They said the soonest they could fix it is possibly Jan 2024! On top of the 2000.00 they wanted to charge me. Isn’t this a safety issue and shouldn’t this be a recall?(the service center lasdy actually admitted to me that the current abs sensors are not good and the reason why it is taking so long to get the parts in is due to a lot of people having the same issue. I haul, tow and use my truck alot and I just can’t believe that this isn’t a recall due to safety issues.
At 9794 miles, warranty repair for Code C002001, failed ABS pump motor control, general circuit failure, replaced control module under warranty. Now the vehicle is having same issue at 37,XXX miles, and no longer under warranty. Screen constantly flashes "Service electronic brake system" and "Service ABS System" over and over. ABS light comes on. Traction control light comes on. Vehicle does not have functioning electronic brakes or ABS. I contacted original dealership who performed repair at 9794 miles who now reports they "have no record" of this repair, although I still have the customer copy of the receipt. I contacted Mopar customer support on 7/11/23 who told me that I would be contacted within 3 days, but I have not been verbally contacted. I also filed an online complaint with Mopar on 7/11/23 and have not received an electronic reply, either. This is a known issue on 2017 Ram 2500 trucks and something must be done about it. My vehicle is not braking safely and I fear to drive the vehicle at this time. Furthermore, our life circumstances require me to often pull a trailer, for which I am unable and uncomfortable with doing at this time. Please help. Dealership is reporting that this could be up to an $1800 or more repair for me to pay, out of pocket, which is unethical. This issue was originally repaired under warranty and persists. Furthermore, class action lawsuits have been filed over this issue, and investigations have been launched over this issue. Please help, t
Faulty part ABS/ traction control system. These parts have previously failed and been replaced two times over the past 3 years and I am having the same problem again. I was told by the dealer that parts are unavailable and offered no alternatives other than continue driving the truck as is, with a faulty brake system until the part is re-designed and made available again. As the truck is now out of warranty and the timeframe of first replacement is beyond one year, the cost of this repair will now be out of pocket. I am currently across the country trailering a fifth wheel RV along with my family with no other option than to try and make it home with a faulty brake system, obviously putting the lives of my family at risk, then possibly wait months for the part to become available. Apparently this is a known problem with this year and model truck yet NHTSA has not mandated a safety recall? I respectfully request to make a formal complaint and would appreciate A PERSONALIZED RESPONSE explaining how this is possible and what steps are being taken to remedy a situation where drivers are forced to drive vehicles with known faults in brake systems.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
