ABS light and alarm come on and goes off at random intervals. This issue was repaired before on 10/06/2020 and now the issue is reoccurring. The original ABS code on the system was C0020-01 (ABS pump motor control - general failure). The HCU part #68143491AA was replaced and the issue corrected. My concern is that the ABS is disabled on the vehicle once the condition occurs and could result in loss of control during a hard or panic stop. I pull a 12,000 lb camper and am concerned that if a hard stop occurs the truck could start sliding and cause the truck and the camper to lose control.
2017 Ram 2500 complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2017 record →
Faulty break module. Dash reads service antilock break system, ABS light on in dash, traction control light on as well. Cruise control will not work because of this issue. Intermittent occurrences at first, now constant after 3 years. It has been taken to multiple dealerships, while under warranty with these exact problems. No results! An independent service center diagnosed this issue and has ordered the part. Have been waiting two months now still nothing.
The service abs and anti lock brake light comes on and off. I have talked with 3 different dealers and they all told me the abs module is probably bad . The part is on backorder for the last year, so I can’t get it fixed.
ABS / Traction Control lights began intermittently turning on. After roughly 5k miles, the lights are on all the time. The truck is throwing code C0020-01. From looking around online, this is certainly not a unique situation. The fact that there is an updated HCU (P/N 68143491AB) to be released later this year, shows that this is a known issue.
As I got in my truck and put the key in the ignition, my driver side power seat started to move forward on its own and would not stop, forcing me to open my door and remove my legs before it pinned my legs or worse, the seat stopped at the fully forward position with only a few inches between seat and bottom of dash.
Recently there has been a number of reports stating the Engine Pre-heater electrical connector has become corroded causing the connector to overheat, rust, and eventually dropping the bolt nut to fall into the intake manifold where the lose nut is succeed into one of the cylinders causing major mechanical damage to the diesel engine. One article was mentioned and posted on Bank Power website, article: RAM Insider Talks Bolt Failure, regarding the intake manifold part# 12B1023A163.
ABS and traction control systems are malfunctioning. Dodge dealer states that the abs module and hcu need to be replaced which both are on back order. Roughly $1500 worth of parts and labor are required to fix issue at my cost. Truck has 80,000 miles currently and problem started about 1000 miles/month ago. Both abs and traction control lights flash on/off constantly.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while entering the vehicle, she noticed that the inside of the window and dashboard was covered with moisture. The contact stated that the rear basins were also filled with water. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing both rear cab vents and brake lights to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 49,584.
ABS failure i have taken my truck to the dealership 3 times to have the ABS module replaced due to failure.my truck only has 67,223 miles on it.the ABS lights comeon the dash and Traction control lights as well when this happens.this needs to be investigated and resolved.please help me and so many others with this issue, Thank you.
Truck continuously warns and chimes to "Service Electronic Brake System." Truck no longer has working ABS. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2022/INOA-PE22012-9925.PDF
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated the ABS warning light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the ABS sensor was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the mechanic replaced the ABS sensor a second time; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000. The contact stated that the failure has occurred three times now. The part necessary for repairs in currently on backorder.
Around the 1st of October I started to get the Service Electronic Braking System and ABS warning lights on my Ram 2500 so I took it into Rairdon’s in Bellingham, WA on November 8, 2022. (Note- it took me 4 weeks to get an appointment to take it in) I was informed that the HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) is faulty and to replace it first and if the fault code comes back then replace the ABS module. Never heard back on the HCU part ETA so I called back to the dealership on November 15, 2022 and was told the HCU will now be in January 18, 2023. Once again when I contacted the dealership on January 8, 2023 and I was told the HCU is now pushed out to March 15, 2023. So I have to wait 4 months (if it shows up to the dealership in March) to get a Mopar part to fix my vehicle?
ABS module and hydraulic control units replaced in 2019, after driving the truck less than 20k miles the exact same issues have returned. Truck is out of warranty now, no cruise control, ABS, or traction control. Very common issue amongst 2017-2018 Rams. Second issue happened recently when temps dropped below freezing. DEF system fault - DEF injector checked for crystallization. No crystals - truck will go into limp mode rendering it useless due to an inferior component manufacture is aware of and have addressed on new models but have not afforded older models a solution.
My dash will randomly start flashing the messages "service electronic braking system" and "service antilock brake system". Sometimes this happens as soon as I start the vehicle, other times it happens while driving down the road. Sometimes it seems as if a bump in the road will trigger the messages, others are random. When the messages are there, the traction control feature does not work. I do not know if the abs system will work or not as I have been lucky enough to not have to test that. Also, while the messages are present, the cruise control function will not work.
2017 Ram 2500. ODO 77,000 miles While driving at any speed, warning lights and audible tones intermittently come on. Display reads "Service Electronic Braking System" and "Service ABS". ABS and Traction Control lights also illuminate on the dash. Sometimes the warnings will come on and off so fast that the truck is constantly chiming which is very distracting. Speed doesn't appear to be a factor. Sometimes the warning lights stay illuminated. Sometimes they go away. Sometimes they flash on a off rapidly. Truck has not been taken to the dealership yet but an appointment has been made and the dealer said it is most likely the ABS module and Hydraulic Control Unit that needs to be replaced. This sounds like a known issue. Safety issues I am concerned about are: Loss of ABS and traction control. Trailer braking system issues while towing (horse trailer). Distractions from audible alarm constantly chiming, loss of braking power.
Starting roughly a year from the date of this report, the vehicle would randomly issue a warning "Service Electronic Braking System" and turn on the Traction Control and ABS warning indicators; it would also disable Cruise Control. These errors would appear sporadically and persists for a few seconds to a few minutes. The dealer was unable to diagnose as the error was not actively triggered at the dealership. Over time, the error happened more often and persisted for longer time periods (minutes, hours, then days) but would eventually (and randomly) reset. It became clear that it was oftent triggered by a sharp jolt or a tight turn. Recently the error stayed on permanently and the dealer was able to retrieve an error code which led them to suspect a faulty connector. It took 6 weeks to get the connector and when the dealer attempted to install it they came to the conclusion that both the wiring harness and the connector are OK. They were able to retrieve additional error codes that pointed at the HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit) of the ABS system needing replacement. No HCU units are currently available. I have conducted extensive online research concerning this issue and the four symptoms: 1. "Service Electronic Braking System" message 2. Traction control indicated lit and traction control disabled 3. ABS indicator lit and ABS disabled 4. Cruise Control disabled and found that there are a large number of reports for RAM 1500 and 2500 models with mileage as low as 12,000 miles. T
Hydraulic Control Unit failure on Ram 2500. This causes antilock brakes to stop working as well as traction control.
The vehicle was purchased new Oct. 2017. On or about 1 Oct 2020 the vehicle had 19,100 miles. The vehicle displayed a constant "ABS Fault" / "Traction Control Fault". This was reported to my local dealer in Panama City, FL. The dealer service dept. worked the current Recalls and the ABS Fault at that time. Service was completed 10/16/2020. The vehicle was still under the basic 36M/36K mile warranty. The dealer reported the replaced part as MOPAR # 68143491AA, brake controller module. The vehicle is not in daily service, so the mileage is low for the age of the vehicle. On or about 1 June 2022, the vehicle had 22,250 miles when the ABS Fault resurfaced. At first it was intermittent, but later the ABS Fault / Traction Control Fault is constantly displayed. The brakes feel and appear to work normal, but I feel they would not work as intended during a hard braking or a skid or on wet pavement. I read dozens of owner blogs, Cummins forums, Ram owners forums, U-Tube, etc. It seems a large number of similar trucks are reported by their owners to have this problem. many owners like me have reported having this problem fixed by the dealer only to have it soon reappear. Many owners that have had this problem repaired also indicated the same part or part number and/or cite the trouble as brake hydraulic controller or a controller module.
The steering components are causing it to be difficult keeping the vehicle in the driving lane; the vehicle wanders from side to side. Two seperate Dealers cannot locate the problem.
At less than 50K miles, the ABS braking and traction control system has failed compromising the safety of the driver, passengers and cargo.
ABS/ Traction Control lights constantly going on and off. Kicks off cruise control. Message blocks digital speedometer. Known issue, yet FCA will not recall.
Service Electronic Brake System came on while driving. Problem seems to be inconsistent and constantly turns on and off preventing ABS and traction control from working. Braking when the system is not working properly will result in massive feedback from the brake pedal.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at 30-35 MPH on a damp road and approaching a stop light, the brake pedal was depressed but the brakes locked, causing the vehicle to slide. The traction control and ABS warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated as he released the brake pedal and reapplied it slowly, the vehicle responded as needed. However, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with brake circuit failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related to NHTSA Action Number: PE22012 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.
See an article that abs failure issues are being reported on 2017-2018 ram 2500-3500. In the process of waiting for an abs hydraulic actuator. Loss of abs and braking
The brakes never have stopping power even with the exhaust brake. It take along time to stop at 30mph and if I'm going above 30 mph I'm afraid I will run into someone ahead of me if they put on their brakes.
Purchased truck used Fall 2021 with only 27k miles. After less than year and about 8k miles. ABS warning lights and sound randomly and erratically became an annoying problem. The cause is a defective Hydraulic Control Unit. Ram truck owners have posted hundreds if not thousands of complaints on the internet regarding this. Anyway, I had to disconnect the fuse for the ABS Module to prevent the annoying, interfering malfunction. The truck brakes safely but there is not the additional safety of the ABS system. The newer version of the Hydraulic Control Unit is not available and backordered until at least the end of January, 2023. Dodge Ram owners of these trucks can't even pay high dealer repair prices because no one has the part. I believe 2019 and newer models have the same problem but Ram has issued a recall for those model years.
ABS and traction control lights flash, ABS and HCU modules have to be replaced
Completed a hard stop, but ABS system did not appear to work correctly. Once stop was completed, had two malfunction lamps and a "service ABS warning". Lights and warning went away once I resumed driving. In a separate incident, I took off from a stop in wet conditions and the traction control system did not appear to be working, vehicle spun the rear tires an abnormal amount. Once this happened, the warning lights and error message returned, but went away upon further driving. I visited the dealer and had them pull the error code and it was "C0020-01-ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL - GENERAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE". There is an active technical bulletin stating the issue is with the hydraulic control unit (HCU). It appears to me that this problem disables the antilock brakes as well as the traction control system. The danger here is that the warning lamps and error messages go away, leading one to believe the system is functioning normal when in fact it is not. I was advised by the dealer that the replacement part is unavailable and could be for several months.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving approximately 5 MPH and depressing the brake pedal, the pedal went to the floor while stopping the vehicle. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,844.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal failed to respond when depressed, and required a longer braking distance. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not yet taken to an independent mechanic or local dealer for diagnostic test or repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The brake warning light flashed on and off irregularly. Took to the dealer but was told they couldn't diagnose it since the light was currently off. Months later the light was on when I took it for the annual State safety inspection. Diagnosed the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced. It took them a few weeks to get one in but it was finally completed at a cost to me of a little more than $1,000. The service writer told me that they have found this to be a common problem in low mileage Ram 2500s. Currently I have approximately 17,000 miles on my 2500
ABS/traction control intermediately functioned for several weeks. But is now inoperable.
While driving the “Service Electronic Braking System and ABS warning light came on. I had a shop run the diagnostics and the tester confirmed what the lights were showing.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving on wet or snowy roads and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle would not stop as needed. The contact stated that after depressing the brake pedal, the ABS pulsated normally but the vehicle did not stop and continued into the intersection. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that the ABS system warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed with an ABS pump motor and a general electrical failure. The vehicle was not repaired due to backordered parts. The manufacturer was not notified about the failure. The failure mileage was 66,000.
Received code c0020-01 for ABS pump, this is the third time in under 50,000 miles. Complete loss of traction control and ABS braking. It’s a well known issue that dealerships are aware of. There are class action lawsuits about this. Please help.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while jump starting another vehicle, the contact noticed that the oil dip stick was not secured. The contact pushed the dip stick back into place. On another occasion, the contact was having the battery changed and the oil dip stick was not secured again. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 95,000.
ABS pump electrical failure, repaired OCT.17/2020 by dealer. 11/20/2022 same problem. ABS light, traction control, and no Trailor brakes, or cruse. not sure what other problems exist.
Service Electronic Brake System and service Antilock Brake system light come on and off intermittently at random times. Some time on and off a few times faster then it can display the message. The Hydraulic Control Unit was replace one already. Reading online there are several 2017 and 2018 rams having this issue.
The ABS control module and the HCU has Failed twice on this truck resulting in loss of traction control, ABS and cruise control. The unit was replaced around 42,000 miles and then failed again at roughly 60,000 miles. Ram will not replace under warranty. the failure causes the abs and traction control light on the dash to come on and off constantly. it also shuts down cruise control. I believe it also causes excessive ware on the rear tires due to the traction control system not working properly. This is a major problem and judging by online repair forums there are many other people experiencing the same issues
The automatic high beam does not go from high to low automaticly.
The contact's husband owned a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that prior to the failure, the dealer replaced the crankcase filter and performed other unknown maintenance services. The contact stated that after her husband remotely started the vehicle, there was smoke coming from underneath the hood and smoke entered the cabin of the vehicle. The contact's husband opened the hood and noticed there were flames coming from the engine compartment. The contact's husband extinguished the fire with a hose. No injuries were sustained, and no medical attention was received. No police or fire department reports were filed. The contact related the failure to a faulty solid-state intake heater grid relay located in the engine compartment; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vehicle remained in the driveway and was not yet deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 94,000.
The contact’s son-In-Law owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while her daughter was putting her grandchildren in the vehicle, her 2-year-old grandson, who was briefly left in an unknown front seat with the doors closed, pushed the gear shifter into drive (D) and the vehicle accelerated without applying the brakes. The vehicle crashed into a trailer filled with tools located 20-30 ft. away. The vehicle then crashed into the corner of a storage building and stopped. There were no injuries sustained. The air bags did not deploy. There was no police report filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V100000 (Power Train). The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under the recall in 2018; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000.
This issue was repaired by the dealer one year ago and it has happened again, they tried to charge me by pretending they didnt know about the previous repair. the internet is full with the exact same complaint and how is this not a recall to hold them accountable?? the service electronic brake system and ABS lights come on and off each time making annoying noises. when the lights are on the 4x4, cruise control and other items will not engage. the dealer agreed to repair it but told me to call in 5 months to see IFFFF any parts are available this not only shows its a wide spread problem but their incompetency to fix it. how do I know the second module they replace wont malfunction as well???
Under normal driving conditions I got the “SERVICE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM” message along with an ABS light, traction control light, loss of traction control, loss of cruise control functions and loss of 4x4 functions. This is a well known safety issue that needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. With ABS being a SAFETY feature required on all vehicles, it is only appropriate that this become a safety recall.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the ABS warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the ABS control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V021000 (Steering). The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the recall was performed. The contact stated that he was informed that the mechanic temporarily welded the nut to the adjuster sleeve and later assembled the drag link welds; however, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was pulling to the right. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics where the contact was informed that an alignment was needed; however, due to the welding, the alignment could not be performed. Additionally, the contact stated that due to the alignment not being performed he had to replace the tires several times. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was provided a cost for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there would be a charge for any repair on the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
The vehicle randomly goes into 4WD without the user turning the knob to request 4WD. If this happens at high speed it will cause severe damage to the vehicle drive train. Makes steering extreemly difficult on pavement. 1. Service 4WD lamp illuminates. 2. Reduced speed and exited highway. 3. Steered vehicle to off ramp. Upon steering left vehicle entered 4WD without user request making steering very difficult. Vehicle would not return to 2WD unless user shut down vehicle, turn knob to 4WD then back to 2WD. Investigated by certified RAM technician at a dealership on 5/11/2]22 who could not find the issue. The dealership cleared the truck for ordinary use. Currently the vehicle status is service 4WD light is on and it will not shift to 4WD or 2WD. 2 incidents one in 1 June 2021 2 September 2022
Service ABS system and service electronic braking system waring lights keep coming on. Throwing code C0020-0. Brake hydraulic control unit is bad. This is a common problem and should be recalled.
My 2017 Ram with less than 14000 miles has no a steady “service ABS system “light on:checking on internet this seems be to happening to ALL Ram models.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
