Defect. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THE ACCUMULATOR THAT IS INSTALLED ON THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED WHICH, OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, COULD RESULT IN LEAKAGE OF THE PRESSURIZED NITROGEN GAS FROM INSIDE THE ACCUMULATOR.

Risk. THE LOSS OF THIS GAS PRESSURE COULD RESULT IN AN ABNORMAL NOISE FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DASH PANEL WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED, AND POSSIBLY A DELAYED FIRST TIME BRAKE BOOST ASSIST AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.

Remedy. DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED ACCUMULATOR. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 1, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI CARIBBEAN AT 1-787-251-8715.

FAILURE IN BRAKE BOOSTER ACCUMULATOR CAUSING NOISES WHEN STOPPING OR SLOWING DOWN AND AFTER STOP. MILES PER HOUR VARIES FROM FULL STOP TO 45 MPH. TWO OTHER 2002 MITSUBISHI MODELS HAVE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM BUT NOT THE MONTERO LIMITED. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM TO REMEDY AND CONTRARY TO THE INVESTIGATION THIS PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS OLDER. *TR

Reading this record

No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.

Most recent recall on file: Sep 4, 2001. Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation.
