Defect. The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.

Risk. Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.

Risk. If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power steering control module (PSCM) and the instrument cluster module, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the PSCM when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, the affected components will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on July 18, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S05.

My vehicle was returned to me following a torque sensor replacement on 4/9/2026 in poor condition (locked steering and a catastrophic gash in the driver-side tire) rendering it undrivable and unsafe. Crossroads Ford of Prince George shop's inspection report claims the tire damage was pre-existing, I have conclusive evidence to the contrary: Virginia State Inspection: My vehicle passed a Virginia state safety inspection on 2/27/2026. Per state law, any tire with a gash or sidewall crack is an automatic failure. This legally certifies the tire was intact immediately prior to their service. Recent Tire Service: I replaced my rear tires at OK Tire and Auto on 3/30/2026. At that time, a full tread and sidewall inspection of my front tires confirmed they were in good condition. The timing of the dealership's communication confirms the damage occurred while in their care: I arrived for my 9:30a appointment around 9:25a. No damage was noted during the initial intake. I was in their facility when I watched a mechanic drive to the other side of the service parking lot without being informed of a "catastrophic" safety issue. I was only notified of the gash at the end of the day when the vehicle was scheduled for return. Their staff now deems the vehicle "unsafe to drive" for their own employees. My steering has been locking while I am driving and causing loss of steering and control of car. I have contacted crossroads dealer and I have not gotten a response as I am now aware there has been a safety recall on this vehicle.

The power steering stopped working. A note did appear to let me know it wasn’t working. I took it in to the mechanic and he confirmed the power steering wasn’t working.

Drivers rear shock rusted off the wheel well causing wheel to snap and metal frame to hit the ground while I was traveling 40 mph. At this time the other wheels locked up and started squealing causing loss of control of vehicle shooting me across lanes and hitting curbs on both sides. This was heard all the way inside a church and they came running out. If I had not been able to gain control it would have flipped. The vehicle is available for inspection. It has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service other than the tow truck attendant telling me that the car need to be junk because it could not be repaired. The component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, or insurance company as it only has liability insurance. A police officer did show up on seen to direct traffic around vehicle and did see the issue but no report was taken. There was absolutely no indication that this was an issue until a few seconds before it snapped and that was the wheel started to wobble.

Vehicle notification stating Power Steering Assist Fault. Power steering locked up on highway going 60 mph while a child was in vehicle and vehicle was extremely hard to get off the highway. Parkway Ford of Pampa, Tx would not honor recall as VIN was not pulling up a recall. But a different auto mechanic repair shop did verify it was a recall.

Power steering stopped working completely.... was taking a turn and the steering became stiff and shook a little and went back to normal. Parked the car. started the car 2 hours later and steering completely stiff... no power steering. a quick google search of this common issue will tell you : Ford owners forum groups with the same issue, complain that Ford apparently only did reprogramming and did not replace the actual part causing the issue, when checking the codes, it did not show the failure yet, so they reprogrammed the unit to check the box Ford completed the safety recall. Months back there were times the power steering would go out, it would be for short amount of times and always came back. As of 40+ days ago the power steering has totally gone out and has not once come back. The dash says "power steering assist fault" The other issue is the wrench on the dash. It's normally after driving for quite some time. Even if there has been a break on the car while grocery shopping etc. when it comes on the car goes into limp mode. VERY DANGEROUS as we cannot tell when it'll happen. There has been multiple times the light turns green we take off, get to about 15-20MPH and she just stops. The dash reads to safetly pull over and I believe it says to shut off the car. This has been happening for 5+ months. There is also random over heating when that happens. This is based on how I remember it. Because of the safety issues I have not driven the vehicle. My husband drives it because he can handle no power steering better then me... My SUV was part of a recall due to the electronic power steering failing. My SUV was allegedly repaired by the cheapest of the three available options (computer reset or some such process). I bought my SUV in 2020. The electronic power steering slowly started going out intermittently and then more frequently over time, but is now completely out. The dealer tested my SUV and stated that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. They claim that the problem has nothing to do with the recall, but I don't believe them. My issue is the exact same issue that prompted the recall in the first place. I should not have to pay for a failed recall repair. I think it's possible that the original dealership faked the repair, or simply chose the cheapest (but not proper) option to save themselves time and money. My shoulder is now damaged due to driving without power steering for so long. I need an honest evaluation of my vehicle and an investigation into whether or not the original dealer performed the proper repair. I would assume that the issue wouldn't come back if it had been repaired properly the first time.

About 3 months ago, my power steering started to fail. After researching to find out the problem, we learned that my car does not have a power steering pump, as it is electronic. I learned that my car had a recall from Ford pertaining to the power steering failing. I called Ford and they told me that my car was part of the recall and was "fixed" in 2015. A month ago I took it to a Ford dealership to have them do a diagnostic on my car and they informed me that it was my power steering torque sensor, which I already knew this by researching the issue. The issue now lies in the fact that the part is on back order and there is no available date. I believe that Ford should have replaced the parts needed instead of doing a "bandaid fix" by doing a software update, which they knew would not be the fix to the problem. Ford got away with not fixing something that is very dangerous to those who drive the Mercury Mariners. Mine is an 2009 and it is now dangerous on the highways to drive. I would like to add that while driving my car now with this issue, my battery light comes on, which is also a known issue to Ford.

The PCM shorts out and fails when sparkplug and Coil packs replaced this cause the steering system to fail speedometer to quit and no transmission connection

Driving and my steering totally quit...almost wrecked it was so hard to control. Had not had any previous issues prior to this. I had my vehicle towed to mechanic and code that came up says steering assist has failed and will need to replace whole steering column assembly. There was no warning light...nothing! Upon my research, I see this is a frequent problem and there was a recall (1 million vehicles) but only for certain models, and of course mine is not one, in fact I haven't read any reports where the steering column was replaced, only reprogrammed and then the problem comes back. My car was manufactured at the Kansas City plant, which I have seen complaints numerous times for this problem coming out of this facility. Mechanic contacted Ford to inquire about the part...was told it was a 6 month minimum time to get the parts!! 6 months...am I just SOL for 6 months since my car cannot be driven safely? I purchased a Ford because they were not part of the government buyout...big mistake. At this point, I cant have it repaired with no parts. They know this is an ongoing problem, yet refuse to do anything about it.

I have been intermittently losing power steering. The code is B1342. After researching, it looks like Ford is aware of this problem but is unwilling to fix the issue. This fix must be done at a dealership since it is a software issue and going to cost $2,000. Obviously losing power steering when going at fast speeds is incredibly dangerous for myself and others. There is no check engine light that comes on when the issue arises.

This is a continual problem, meaning that it is not a one time incident. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection at any time. When the power steering goes out while driving, the steering wheel jerks to one side, and feels like a lock-up. The vehicle is still drivable, but can be dangerous in a situation where attempting to avoid an obstacle, could result in an inability to do so, because the maneuvers are being executed for a vehicle with power steering, so when it goes out, those same corrections will not successfully avoid a collision. The dealership is aware of the problem. They did a system check and insist that the steering column needs to be replaced, and that it has nothing to do with the previous recall, but it is exactly the same problem involved with the recall, therefore I do not believe they are differing issues. I believe the initial recall repair was unsuccessful, or the wrong fix. There were three or four options for fixing the issue. There are no warning lights that come on prior to the power steering going out, but a click can be heard however, at the exact moment when the mechanism for the power steering goes out. I went in to the parking lot of the vince lombardi service station turned the car off when i went in on the way out turn the car on and i couldnt move the steering unless i really used force so if this was to happen to me while driving it would have been bad called ford they say for my vin number it does not have a recall for that however diring research i saw other mariners have a 14s05 recall which reflects pretty much what happened to me

While driving vehicle brakes all of sudden go to the floor, no pedal response. This has happened a couple of times without warning. Once when I was approaching an intersection and light changed. My brakes all of the sudden went to the floor and I had to downshift and cut my wheels toward the curb to stop from crashing. Then a couple days later attempting to get it to mechanic it was fine and pumped properly. I wrote it off as a fluke. Then a few months later it happened again. My mechanic can't seem to find the issue and has charged me for new brakes, new master cylinder, new brake line, and another part for the abs power assistant. My car still continues to have this brake malfunction on and off. Somebody is going to end up getting hurt. This obviously is some kind of part defect. Please help!

The passenger side front tire became disconnected while driving. The frame rusted and broke causing the tire to separate from the vehicle. The tow truck driver commented that he had never seen this before. I had the vehicle towed to Firestone only to have them tell me they could not fix the vehicle. The vehicle has not been thoroughly inspected, but is available to be inspected. I noticed a change in the steering wheel position for about a week prior to the tire separating. If the tire would have separated from the vehicle while driving on a highway or busy street, more damage and possible injury could have resulted.

Power steering assist goes in and out. Making it very hard to turn

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel would vibrate abnormally. The contact stated that at start-up the power steering assist fault message appeared on the instrument panel. The contact stated that excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle; she called her boyfriend to the scene and he drove the vehicle home. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer had been notified of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

Second time the power brake pedal assembly has failed. The assembly failed in 19th February 2013 and had to be replaced by Fremont Ford. The power brakes failed completely and it had to be towed in. The part is BM6Z-2455-A. The Power brake assembly electronics failed again in January 26 and I have to drive it into the dealership with failing brakes. I was informed that the part is no longer manufactured and is unavailable from Ford. Failure of brake electronics in this hybrid represents a hazard if the brakes fail from failing electronics and the car is unable to stop. We are currently searching for part from a scrapped vehicle. The car is currently at Livermore Ford 1-925-273-7814. I think that the car should be recalled and defects in power brake module investigated and redesigned part should be installed before other cars brakes fail.

While driving car lost power steering causeing dangerous situation and loss of full control of car. Result was several near accidents while trying to get the car under control to shoulder. Car was diafnosed by dealer to need steering column. "Power Steering Assist Problem" displayed on dash when steering was lost.

I was making a turn and the vehicle seemed as if the steering locked up. It randomly does this and is starting to be more and more often. It has already made me run off of the road and hit a culvert causing even further damage.

My wife is driving the car and the power steering quits working several times. Off and on. Speed varies.. Very scary!
