Defect. Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2020-2021 CX-30 vehicles. When fully opened, the power liftgate may partially lower unexpectedly when the vehicle is parked facing uphill on a slope.
Risk. If the power liftgate unexpectedly lowers while a person is accessing the rear storage area of the vehicle, it can increase their risk of injury.
Remedy. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will update the power liftgate control module software and inspect the serial number of the power liftgate drive unit, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 8, 2021. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 4621B.

Defect. Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2020 CX-30 and Mazda3 vehicles. The front brake caliper mounting bolts may not have been tightened properly during assembly, possibly allowing the calipers to loosen.
Risk. Loose brake calipers can reduce braking performance or interfere with wheel rotation, affecting vehicle handling. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front brake caliper bolts, tightening them as necessary. If bolts are missing, the affected brake caliper will be replaced. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 24, 2020. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 4420F.

My car was squeaking and lurching around 3/4 gear. I took it in to the Mazda dealership (Northtowne Mazda in Kansas City) and they told me it was a "well-known issue" with this year and make of a Mazda. There is a problem with the torque converter lock-up clutch which sheds iron particles into the transmission fluid. The torque converter needs to be replaced. After further research, it appears that Mazda has a well-documented manufacturing defect that is outlined in Mazda TSB 05-005/23. My car has a 60,000 mile/5 year warranty on it. It currently only has 48,600 miles on it (well under the warranty limit). I called the Mazda Corporation Customer Care and they opened a ticket but I was told today that they will not extend any assistance with this, even though it is below the warranty limit on mileage and with them knowing about this issue and publishing a bulletin about it. I asked about the Good Will extension and the Customer Service Case Manager told me it didn't qualify. Even with it being under the warranty mileage, because it's over the year limit, they won't cover it. I asked what the criteria was to qualify for the Good Will extension and he told me it was "confidential" and there is nothing they can do about it.

The front passenger side headlight is making a whirring noise whenever the light is turned on. Based on the NHTSA safety reports for this model, this indicates the fan is failing, and soon the headlight will also fail. Intact headlights are essential for driving safety at night. No warning messages have appeared on the car.
Electrical System

My 2020 Mazda CX-30 has an intermittent no-start condition caused by a complete electrical failure. This occurs randomly, often overnight and after long or short trips. When it happens: The car does not respond to the key fob or ignition Dashboard warning lights are off Vehicle cannot be started, creating a safety risk if it occurs during travel or in an emergency The defect began during car's full warranty period and has persisted despite multiple service visits and battery replacement. The dealer has been unable to diagnose or correct the issue, and Mazda Corporate is aware of the defect under case Case Number 00398310. After about two years of these intermittement failures, and parasitic draws ruled out, I paid to have the Battery replaced, independently of Mazda and the battery failed yet again. Routine diagnostics have not resolved the defect Issue is intermittent and unpredictable This is a Safety Risk as the Car has failed to start when needed on numerous occasions, and has left me stranded. ALL of these Failures have occured without warning Mazda Corporate is aware and has requested dealership diagnostics. Dealership has not reproduced the problem. Issue remains unresolved as of 1/10/2026 Video documentation exists showing dealer inspection and inability to find failure source. I am submitting this complaint to NHTSA because the defect: Impairs the vehicle’s safe operation Has not been reliably repaired Represents a potential safety risk to the driver and public I req

There is a module that should connect to the hatch door to open. That module in no longer available. Without the hatch door opening, in case of side impact and being pushed into something else, there is no way to get out of the car. This poses a serious safety hazard. I have contacted the Mazda dealership and I am told that the part is "retired" and there is no replacement part at this time.

The initial sensor alarm indication was low oil pressure and within less then an hour engine malfunction was detected and the vehicle stopped functioning. This incident occurred on [XXX] in SanAntonio and thereafter it was towed to the Mazda Dealership for inspection upon request. I was driving from Dallas to SanAntonio with my [XXX] and [XXX] children when the vehicle started making strange noise and It the notification on dashboard stated I need to immediately stop the vehicle for safety. Middle of nowhere I had to find a nearest safe place for my children. This vehicle put me and my kids in an unsafe environment due to the faulty engine that was installed by the Mazda company. I was afraid thinking the car will start on fire because it was an engine alert. Yes the vehicle has been inspected by the North Park Mazda dealership on 5/12/25 with an initial quote of engine repair for $7905.88. The first time I noted which was few weeks back prior to this incident when the vehicle stalled at me while I arrived and stopped the vehicle at UT Southwestern Medical Center were I work as a nurse to badge into my parking lot. I got worried for a moment thinking could it be battery issue? I turned off the vehicle and turned it back on and the vehicle starting working. I parked the car and completed a 12 hr shift and thereafter did few weeks of work without any alerts or issue on the vehicle until the day off [XXX]. I am reporting a repeated and potentially dangerous transmission failure in my 2020 Mazda CX30. At 6 months old, the original transmission failed. Mazda confirmed it was defective and replaced it with a refurbished unit with 10,000 miles on it. That replacement is now also failing—within 4 years of the first failure. This means the car has experienced two transmission failures before reaching 5 years of service. This raises concerns about: •The reliability of Mazda’s factory parts •The quality and safety of refurbished transmissions Mazda uses in warranty repairs •A potential pattern of premature transmission failures on this model Repeated transmission failure can cause loss of power and control, posing serious safety risks to drivers and passengers. Mazda has all service records confirming both incidents. I am submitting this to alert NHTSA to a possible defect pattern that may warrant investigation.

Low Engine Oil Light keeps appearing at seemingly random intervals. I will heat up my vehicle, begin driving, and sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes after 20 minutes it will come on. I drove 2.5 hours and it did not come on at all. It first started Friday 11/29 and was driven to and from a few places and came on 50% of the time. The 2.5 hour drive occurred on Saturday 11/30 and the light did not come on at all.

I am experiencing sharp edge on the Driver Side window up button. The Nicle plating is wearing off and causing safety concern. I have images of the concern. Will send upon request. Mazda is suggesting that I take the vehicle in for diagnostics and service. Their diagnostic cost is extremely high, and I am trying to avoid paying the diagnostic fee. Copy of the contents of my email sent to Mazda. I am experiencing sharp edge on the Driver Side window up button. I am wondering if this can be repaired under warranty or, should I report the abnormally to NHTSA to pursue a possible recall to have this switch replaced. I recall NHTSA had a recall on Hyundai vehicles a few years ago for the same issue. Can you please advise.

My sunroof spontaneously shattered/exploded during a standstill at a stoplight while waiting to enter a freeway. The glass sunroof panel appeared slightly curved upwards (caused by built up interior pressure?) and the shattered hole is right below my roof crossbar. There is no damage to metal roof surface or crossbar. My interior roof slider was closed when my sunroof shattered as it could have compromised my family's safety. After the incident, I drove my vehicle to the nearest dealership (Capistrano Mazda) but they didn't lift a finger besides taking a couple pics and suggested I call their 800 customer experience center number. Since it was a Saturday, I reached out through Mazda's customer experience email. I didn't hear back from Mazda until 4 days later on [XXX] requesting additional information (address, VIN # & mileage). After providing requested information, I didn't hear back from Mazda until [XXX] suggesting I bring my vehicle back to Capistrano Mazda dealership for a diagnosis. Almost 10 days had passed with no action from Mazda while I still had to commute to/from work dealing with loud incessant cabin noise from shattered sunroof open cavity. The car was running in parking garage without ignition being turned on. When I entered the car, the motor wouldn't catch at all, and message popped up saying the there was a brake malfunction. All the lights were on, so it did not seem to be a battery problem, but the drive function was dead. Several months ago the car started racing while i was driving and i couldnt get it to stop. I finally, while still driving, turned off the ignition and rolled off the road. After a few minutes, i restarted the engine. it had stopped racing and i drove it to the Mazda dealership. They didnt find anything wrong. So this latest incident, Jan. 3rd, involved an uninitiated running vehicle that was parked, and the brake malfunction console notice that said "brake malfunction". Again, the prior incident involved the same vehicle racing on a roadway and necessitated the turning off the ignition while on a major road and rolling the car onto the shoulder. There is something wrong with this car involving the engine and brakes. Triple A came to tow it to the dealership and utilized an alternator to start it, which enabled them to drive it to the tow truck.

I bought Mazda CX30 in 2020 and the battery already starts to fail. The engine light and the battery light are on suddenly when I was driving. Then, after a while, when I restart the engine and it starts to work again. However, it happens for two times within a week. I have sent the car to the Auto Zone and the nearby car auto repair company to check the car. However, they said they cannot detect anything as the engine light and the battery light are on again this time. It is so dangerous when the car suddenly stop in the middle of the road when I was driving. I am so lucky that this accident happened during rush hour and there were heavy traffic.

No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.
Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
