On November 6, 2025 at 11:59 AM, the active head restraint on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited deployed without impact as I adjusted the driver’s seat into an upright position. This was a spontaneous mechanical deployment inside the cabin of a stationary vehicle. The dealership confirmed this as a known failure involving the internal plastic retaining clip that holds the deployment pin. This defect was previously covered under a 10-year extended warranty that expired in November 2024. At the time of the incident, I was alone in the vehicle. I later sought medical evaluation for head, neck, shoulder, and lower back pain and was diagnosed with a cervical strain. Because this failure occurs without collision, it presents a serious risk of injury to drivers and passengers. I regularly spend time with elderly individuals in personal, non-commercial contexts and occasionally transport others in my personal vehicle. In such a population, an in-cabin mechanical deployment of this force could cause catastrophic injury. The manufacturer and warranty programs have declined to assist with repair due to expiration despite acknowledging this as a known defect. Estimated repair cost is approximately $1,000. I am submitting this report for documentation, safety tracking, and defect pattern analysis. Subject: Safety Defect Report – Failure of Telematics Module (TCU) Causing Loss of 9-1-1 Emergency Function, Electrical System Malfunctions, and Potential Brake Booster Recall Defect (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee) Dear NHTSA, I am submitting this complaint because my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is experiencing multiple safety-related failures that I believe are part of a wider defect pattern affecting this model year. Several of these issues involve systems that are critical for emergency safety, braking, and vehicle control. Dear NHTSA, I am submitting this complaint because my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is experiencing multiple safety-related failures that I believe are part of a wider defect pattern affecting this model year. Several of these issues involve systems that are critical for emergency safety, braking, and vehicle control. ⸻ 1. Telematics Control Unit (TCU) Failure Causing Loss of 9-1-1/SOS Emergency Function My Jeep is displaying repeated “Service Emergency Vehicle Phone” errors and the SOS/911 emergency button no longer functions. This is a major safety concern, especially in the event of an accident or breakdown. The TCU failure also causes: •Uconnect 8.4 system not booting •HVAC controls becoming non-functional or unsafe (blowing incorrect temperatures, failing to defrost, turning off unexpectedly) •Random system resets •Loss of ability to control climate during driving (creating visibility issues in cold/wet weather) These issues align with widesprea

The monostable shifter malfunctions constantly. Safety-related concerns include it not staying in park when parked, rolling has occurred; not being able to start due to it not actually being in park; it will switch gear while driving and vehicle will go into limp mode and shut off within seconds, then will not be able to restart. I cannot count on it starting or getting me anywhere safely and have towed multiple times now. The problem has unfortunately not been reproduced or realized by local dealership even with ‘service shifter’, ‘until you reach a desired location you may not be able to shift again NO BUS’, and engine light warning lights appearing when driven. It has been taken twice to John Hiester Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Sanford. (NC). I have spoken with Jeep Customer Care to no avail and the answer is take to a certified dealership but that option is proving to not be successful. I purchased in February 2025 but became disabled right after and haven’t realized it’s very major issues. Not being able to use my vehicle is quite isolating [XXX]. The contact stated that she had issues with cataracts and attributed the lack of illumination on the road to her condition. The contact stated that she avoided driving at night until she had to attend an event at night and asked her son to drive. The contact’s son also witnessed the lack of illumination on the roadway from the headlights. The contact stated that after returning to the residence, the contact’s son parked the vehicle facing a wall, and both observed that the passenger’s side headlamp was illuminating the driveway directly below and in front of the vehicle, and the driver's side headlight was illuminating the trees. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer, and the headlight assemblies were taken apart and then reinstalled and recalibrated. The contact stated that the dealer was unable to repair the headlights and stated that there was a fault in the headlamp assemblies that could not be repaired. The contact stated that the same dealer had replaced both headlamps in 2019 due to a failure to operate as needed. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,875.

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 54,400.
6 months ago, I was driving on the interstate and the ESC system light came on, the vehicle lost power/ability to accelerate, and would only allow acceleration after pulling over and restarting the car. This happened several more times on the interstate, and when the ESC system kicked in it would suddenly lurch the car down about 15 mph and leave no ability to accelerate, causing near collisions at high rates of speed. After eventually taking it to the dealership, it turned out to be failed lifters on the driver's side cam shaft, a known design issue that has apparently plagued the Pentastar engines. This all happened in spite of meticulous maintenance and no warning signs from the engine whatsoever. How is such a significant, known design defect that causes such dangerous driving conditions never been flagged for a recall?
Was getting ready to go to town, opened back seat for daughter to get into vehicle, and all of a sudden the front seat headrest popped out. Was very scary. Thankfully no one was in the front seat when it happened. I could only imagine there would have been some pain/injury sustained if they were. There were no warnings. No other malfunctions. Headrest is not able to be "clicked" back into place as a bracket is broken inside. There has not been any investigation by manufacturer, police or insurance reps.
We were driving this weekend and the headrest components failed and blew it apart. It shoved my husbands head forward really hard. We pulled over and tried to fix it but all the pieces are snapped inside of it. From our understanding that is a safety feature that is supposed to happen in a crash but we were not in a crash, just doing 55 mph down the road. It was not inspected by anyone yet but from reading online forums this seems to be a common occurrence.
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 77,795, and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 196,000.
Drivers seat headrest, popped apart while driving. Hit back of drivers head with loud sound, scaring driver and jerking neck, while driving. Checked for recall, none shown.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling in the driveway, the front driver's side headrest deployed unintendedly. The contact did not sustain any injury. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the headrest was no longer covered under warranty, and the headrest replacement would be at the owner’s expense. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 155,000.
The anti collision avoidance systems did not engage. Instead it seemed the vehicle sped up. It did not engage to stop a collision, I was at almost a stop. Vehicle seemed to speed up. The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V699000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING), and the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure occurred. The contact stated that coolant had leaked onto the driveway. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the radiator was fractured. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the EGR cooler failed (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and there was coolant intrusion into the oil. The contact was informed that the EGR cooler needed to be replaced, along with the coolant bottle, the upper and lower radiator hoses, and possibly the high-pressure fuel pump. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the warranty had expired. The contact was informed that the recall repair was completed with an upgraded part. The failure mileage was approximately 173,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 55 MPH, the vehicle jerked, and the transmission unexpectedly shifted into neutral. An unknown warning light flashed on the instrument panel. In addition, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The contact waited for a few minutes. The vehicle restarted and the vehicle functioned as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. However, no cause for the failure was found. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. Upon investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V447000 (POWER TRAIN). However, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure recurred, and the vehicle was parked and no longer driven due to safety concerns. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Jeep recalled the oil cooler as it can crack and cause leaking into the coolant yet the problem still persists. This can be inspected on my vehicle at any time. Jeep is claiming that since it was “repaired” (recalled) this is a customer problem. I have been quoted over 10k to fix a problem that was never correct from the recall Jeep performed. Jeep has failed in this recall remedy and are pushing customers to fix repairs as a result of their failed actions. Failed oil coolers can cause the vehicle to catch fire which could burn down someone’s home if the car catches fire while parked in a garage or structure. The nearby Jeep dealer called and confirmed that the issues I am currently having is a result of the cracked and recalled replacement oil cooler. There are countless number of people online how have also had the same issue and been told by Jeep and dealerships that this is now a customer responsibility because they provided a “warranty” in addition to the recall. The warranty is a result of a class action law suit against Jeep for emissions issues. I did not and do not have any warning light on my vehicle. I just had evidence of coolant leaking with a coolant smell when in front of the vehicle.
I purchased a used 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. The seller claimed the mileage was around 76,800 at the time of sale. After the purchase, a vehicle history report (Carfax/AutoCheck) showed that the actual mileage was approximately 223,000. This means the odometer reading was rolled back or misrepresented. The title paperwork shows a false mileage disclosure. This problem puts consumers at risk because the true condition of the vehicle is hidden, making it unsafe to rely on maintenance records or expected performance. It is also a violation of federal odometer laws. The issue has been confirmed by the vehicle history report, and all documents are available for inspection if requested.
Engine light came on: took in for service. The dealer recommends replacing a damaged Intake Manifold for $2,247. 33. It appears there are recalls on these for same year as my vehicle involving both Jeep and Ram Trucks. However My vin does not fall into the recall? I find this odd and I understand there has to be a cut off, but i believe my vehicle was made around the same time and I don’t think Chrysler was aware of the problem until later… I also have Engine Oil cooler leaking which I am unsure if it is related, but now I have extensive repairs for Coolant flushing/ radiator hoses and coolant hoses, metal fuel lines, and thermostat… I am just disappointed that a recall is valid on the same model and year as mine, I was unaware and now I have a $8,570.40 quote to get this fixed. I am wondering if the EGR cooler failure has led to this massive problem as I am aware the engine oil cooler and EGR cooler are releated along with manifold function/ efficiency. Now I have Oil and coolant mixing in my system… If my eco diesel jeep were included in the original recall, I may not be dealing with this unexpected visit. The headrests activator failed on the driver’s seat and hit me in the back of the head. I was driving about 35mph. This vehicle has never been in an accident. A week later the same thing happened in the passenger seat to a passenger. Upon inspection the plastic failed that secures the latch-pin. We were never notified about this problem!
The 3.6L engine has a misfire and that problem was addressed by replacing the following new plugs, coilpacks, injector, plenum gaskets and it ended up being the rocker arms or cam shaft This has to be address as it is a wide problem with EVERY one of these engines.
My TCM (Transmission Control Module). Yes. While driving my jeep kept shifting into Nuetral all by itself and I would have to shift back into Drive. This is going into my jeep dealer on 8-5 and put on the diagnostic test. It was only checked out by plugging in the meter and this is the code that came back. Has not been inspected by police, insurance, Jeep dealer as of yet until 8-5-25. Yes it went from shifting g into Nuetral by itself to Slow g down on its own and it happened most recently on a major interstate with an 18 wheeler behind me and almost rear ended me. As I gave it gas it wouldn’t go I rolled to side of road. This was the 5th time this happened to me. It all started back in beginning of July. The check engine light came on.
The engine and powertrain are affected by a defect described in Safety Recall 66A / NHTSA 23V-411 (loss of crankshaft position). Despite the recall software update being performed, my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to display Diagnostic Trouble Code P0336 (Crankshaft Position Sensor Performance). This issue causes intermittent stalling, hard starts, and loss of engine power, which creates a serious risk of crash if the vehicle stalls while driving. The safety defect described in the recall — tone wheel magnetic material delamination leading to crankshaft signal loss — is still present. Two diagnostic reports (one from an FCA-authorized dealership and one from an independent mechanic) confirm the presence of DTC P0336. The Service Manager at the dealership agreed this is likely recall-related but said FCA corporate must authorize hardware repair. FCA (Case #93427994) has refused to approve full repair, leaving the safety defect unresolved. The defect has been confirmed by the dealership and independent service center and persists despite the software reprogramming remedy. Warning lights (check engine) are active and the issue is repeatable.
The contact owned a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 35 MPH, multiple warning lights illuminated. The contact noticed smoke emitting from under the hood. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and immediately exited the vehicle. The contact opened the hood and flames were visible. In addition, the electrical throttle illuminated, and the temperature gauge displayed it was hot. The fire extinguished on its own. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was diagnosed and informed the contact that the wires were damaged by the fire up to the location where the starter was located. However, no cause for the fire was found. The vehicle was towed to another independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the vehicle was sabotaged. The vehicle had unknown electrical work completed on the vehicle. However, the vehicle failed to start. Most recently, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle's mileage was 224,495 and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage on the title was 26,270. The insurance company was not notified. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 225,585.
Car slips into neutral while on highway. Car continues to go from drive to neutral. Mechanic states new transmission necessary. Contacted Chrysler Jeep dealer they stated all recalls complete not their problem.
Windshield wipes are malfunctioning. They come on and function by themselves without the windshield wipers being activated. Purchased the car on 5/26/2025 and issue started on 6/1/25. Took the car to the dealership on 6/2/25 to check the problem out. They couldn’t mimic the problem. Car has been back and forth to the dealership 3x since 6/2/25 trying to figure out what the issue is.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 45 MPH, the message "Service Electronic Throttle Control" was displayed, and the check engine warning light and the electrical system warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the failure was part of a recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact stated that the powertrain control module software was updated. The contact stated that the failure persisted. Upon further investigation, the contact found document part 573 on the NHTSA website related to additional recall repairs. The contact stated that the dealer refused to repair the vehicle. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V411000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and assigned a case manager. The failure mileage was 187,799.
The car will randomly throw itself into neutral and i will completely lose all power. got a diagnostics done and it is the transmission control module. the part is currently on back order because so many cars are having the same issue as mine.
I am reporting an unresolved safety recall issue on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee (VIN: [XXX] ). On February 1, 2025, I brought my vehicle to Chapman Dodge Chrysler Jeep (3470 Boulder Highway) after being informed that the driver’s seatbelt retractor was part of a safety recall and needed replacement. I was initially told the replacement part would arrive within 10 days. However, more than five months later, the seatbelt remains unrepaired. My wife and I have called the dealership multiple times—she called five times and I called once. Each time we were promised a follow-up call when the part arrived, but none was ever made. On June 9, the dealership told us a new part order had been placed 2–3 weeks earlier from a new supplier, and that the sales associate Armando (“Mondo”) would follow up. No update was provided to me directly. On July 9, we were told the part was ordered again and messages were left with Mondo to contact us, but as of today, no one has reached out. Throughout this process, I have felt dismissed and the safety of the non-functional seatbelt— which hangs limp and offers no protection—has not been prioritized. I never received an official recall notice from Jeep, and I am left with a vehicle unsafe to drive with no clear timeline for repair. I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance in addressing this ongoing safety concern, as the dealership has failed to resolve the recall in a timely manner and the delay poses a significant risk. Complaint to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Subject: Vehicle Sold by CarMax with Open Recall Campaign Z46 in Violation of Stop-Sale Order Dear NHTSA, I am reporting CarMax for selling a vehicle affected by Recall Campaign Z46 (NHTSA ID: 22V406) in violation of the stop-sale requirement. In November 2023, I purchased a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Diesel from CarMax while it was still subject to this recall and the part needed for repair was on national backorder. CarMax failed to disclose the open recall or the serious safety implications. As a result, I experienced significant engine and DEF system problems and incurred over $3,800 in related expenses. The vehicle was eventually repossessed, and I had to borrow nearly $2,500 to recover it. In addition to these costs, I experienced credit score damage and emotional stress from the situation. I am requesting NHTSA to investigate this dealer for violating the federal stop-sale order and endangering consumers by releasing a recalled vehicle without remedy or disclosure. Spontaneous deployment of driver seat head rest (without any collision or trauma to the vehicle that might make it deploy). Unable to safely operate my vehicle now that head rest safety function is defective.
Grand Cherokee head rest popped out.
I was stopped in traffic at approximately 16:00 on Tuesday 5/27/2025. All of the sudden the drivers side headrest deployed with force, hitting me in the back of my head and pushing my head and neck forward. Since the incident I am experiencing pain in my neck.
Sometimes when i put my Suv in reverse or on drive it make a fully stop and returns to parking.
While driving on the interstate suddenly my jeep switched gears I was able to put back in drive and pull over. After pulling over and jeep being put in park it wouldn’t go back into drive, after 3 attempts turning car off and back on again it finally shifted to drive. I was able to at least get home and put it in garage. It now will not go into reverse at all, I try frequently, this happened a few months ago, I also called and reported issue but was never told I had to get online and fill out a form etc. I can’t afford to pay for this big of a repair. It seems this issue has occurred on several 2014 jeeps. This was extremely scary and unsafe to say the least even more so with my kids in the car. I hope I can get this taken care of and finally have a vehicle again. Please email [XXX] or call me at [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Rear hatch leaking creating electrical fire hazard potential.
Car unexpectedly shifted into neutral without me switching gears while driving.
The component in question is the rear drive shaft. It has been losing speed as I travel on roads and the highways. When accelerating from a stop sign or red light, the vehicle seems to not want to move. It takes a few seconds for the computer to realize the car is in motion. Once it picks up speed, there are three (3) knocks that occur. It makes the vehicle jerk hard and sway sometimes. The next component is the transfer case. It puts the four-wheel in progress to be shifted. The four-wheel drive makes a popping noise when the vehicle comes to a stop and is shut off. It continues to keep shifting from two-wheel to four-wheel to two-wheel without even using the controls. While pulling out from a car lot, I made a right turn. The vehicle acted as if it did not want to go, and the front end started jerking and making a popping noise. Also, when riding on the highway, the front end shakes terribly. My safety was at risk because the vehicle acts up while pulling into traffic or riding on the road. Sometimes, I have my grandkids in the vehicle with me. They are my most precious packages when they ride with me. The problem of the drive shaft has been confirmed by a dealerships service department, my mechanic, and the mechanics of the dealership I purchased the vehicle from. Has not been inspected by the police, insurance reps, or the manufacturers. There were times when the service message for the four-wheel drive came on. It was an issue trying to find a place to do the service.
Trunk lift gate opens on its own and continually opens and closes; removing the battery does not stop the automatic open/close and it will continue to do so for some time. It does it randomly, but more so after the car has gotten wet from a wash or rain. While sitting stationary the trunk opened on its own while locked and alarmed.
My truck was affected by the fuel pump recall brought it to the dealership to have it performed was told fuel pump was bad and contamination occurred was told they will repair the truck as part of the recall. 3 weeks later received a call truck was ready but gave a code for temp sensor that was not covered by recall had to pay $500 for the repair I authorized and was told part was out of stock for a week. after the part was installed i was told the car was ready all codes were cleared and car was good to go. A warning came on said, service shifter. The part alone is $1,600 I’m a widow and can’t afford this. Mechanic says it’s the electronic transmission module,it tells the transmission what gear to shift into. I read complaints that their Jeep will shift into N or other gears going down the highway. To me this is dangerous and hope you can help.

I had a recall on the dash of my Jeep due to the leather wrinkling.I had very slight wrinkling, so I honored the recall and took it to the dealership. They replaced the leather which seemed to fix the problem, well WRONG, they put the leather down with no adhesive to keep it in place. Long story short, it began having some puckering in the middle, now the whole dash looks like a wrinkled bed sheet and its totally lifted along the bottom of the windshield, which has caused my defrost vent to lift out of place and resricts airflow. This resricts my visibility when the defrost cannot blow accurately. I took it back to the dealership to show them, and to tell them that it's worse than before I brought it to them, and if I had've known this would happen, I would have left it alone! I showed them that they Obviously didn't put adhesive under the leather, the just laid and tucked it! They said they couldn't repair it. I took it to get it assessed and as soon as he saw it, he said "This was OBVIOUSLY installed Wrong!"

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
