2018 Jeep Compass complaints

As I was pulling my 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk to a light off the highway exit, the vehicle did its automatic stop the engine function. After about 4 seconds a "high coolant temp, shutdown vehicle" note appeared. The engine turned off and I lost complete control. The car would not move, e-brake engaged automatically, and the vehicle would not restart. 30 minutes later someone came by to jump start the battery and the car started. I was able to drive to a safe location but I am worried this problem will continue. There was no real explanation online and I have read countless accounts of the same problem happening to others, some while driving at high speeds.

Key fob not detected since I bought certified pre-used. There’s an oil consumption issue. There’s a stall issue that completely cut my Jeep off in the middle of rush hour traffic almost causing an accident. I’ve replaced batteries 2x and had to dealer 3x with them unable to reproduce symptoms. They didn’t do the oil consumption test. Just changed oil. This Jeep is a serious hazard!!

Same incident happened two days in a row, was only driving my car for a minute when the car just shut off while driving. Luckily I was still in my neighborhood and able to pull over, except today it happened as I entered the main road. Car just shut off while driving. Both days “low oil pressure” warning came on for a second and then went away. No prior oil or engine light or anything that would indicate an oil issue. Dealership found no leaks/cracks but said I have a serious oil consumption issue. Suggested I monitor and come back at 1000 miles. This is a huge safety concern and recall should be mandated for this known issue!! Car has only 53,000 miles and don’t even know if I can keep this car. My son was in the car both times, I’m incredibly concerned for our safety.

This 2018 Jeep Compass Latitude has gone through several repairs already; a lot of them concerning the start/stop system and the battery that powers this feature. In the past 4-5 years, it's been replaced three times. In addition, the engine had to be replaced due to high oil burn. As of recent, the vehicle has started displaying "Stop safely. Vehicle with Shut Off Soon" message; especially during highway cruising. This has posed a highly increased safety risk for my family and there seems to be no way for the dealer to address the problem because they cannot replicate it. The vehicle underwent these repairs when covered by the warranty but because of it's mileage, it is no longer eligible. We need

When at a stop sign the car auto shut off. After releasing the break, the car would not restart and would not go into park. After a few minutes of panic, I was able to move the gear shifter to park and after several attempts, the car barely restarted. This also happened a previous time at a stop light.

While at a stop light, my vehicle moved into "stop" mode and as the light turned green and I attempted to resume driving the vehicle attempted to go back into "start" mode and shut down completely. I could not press down fully on the break nor turn on my hazards. THe dashboard flickered, but never shut off. Given that this happened at a busy intersection, it was quite dangerous and I was fearful that I would get hurt.

The Jeep says High Coolant Temperature even after adding much coolant. Car shuts off while driving on the streets and highways.

The emergency brake lights up and engages randomly. This has happened several times while driving, causing the vehicle to slow to a stop, and requiring a restart.

When stopping at a red light, the car stalls and is unable to restart for 5-10 minutes. All of the lights and emergency notifications start popping up on the screen. Stating service start/stop. This has happened multiple times in the last month in the middle of intersections.

My Jeep compass has shut down twice in the middle of an intersection. Once it took 5 mins for it to start. The other time it took an hour. When it shut down it would lock everything so you could t put it in neutral to push it

Driving to work and felt like engine locked up. Looked at dashboard and the coolant gauge on left side suddenly spiked and said "Coolant Temperature High." Then 2-3 seconds later the coolant temp gauge went straight back to normal and engine came back on.

Was driving home on the highway and the dash board lights all flashed red then the car would no longer accelerate and the check engine light stayed on. We had a baby in the car and had to pull over using the cars momentum to exit the highway as safely as we could in a dangerous situation. I have just had the entire long block engine replaced in January.

On April 9, 2023, May 19, 2023 June 4, 2023 and today June 7, 2023 as I was driving the car stopped without warning. In both insistence in June I was entering the highway and had to pull over. In the upper right of the dashboard where it states the operation (i.e R for for reserve, d for drive and etc) it changed from "RUN" to "On". I looked down and noticed the emergency parking brake was engaged. I looked at the dashboard and it gave instructions to push and deactivate the parking brakes. The car remained "On" however" I had to turn the car off and restart it. I have called for repair and they can not get to it until the end of June. I am VERY afraid to drive the car and do not have extra cash for a rental. This is my only vehicle and can not be off of work or do my care taking without a car. I only have 30, 000 miles on it as of last week. I have the Mopar warranty and wonder why I can't get a car that I can drive until they figure out what is wrong. It is extremely dangerous if I had gotten on the expressway. I have very concerned.

There seems to be an oil issue. I can’t find where it’s leaking but it is dropping off the bottom of the oil pump housing.

The contact’s son owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while her son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact’s son was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the auxiliary battery had drained the core battery. The contact was informed that the auxiliary and core battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable. The VIN was unavailable.

Drivers side impact at approximately 40mph and side, floor and overhead airbags failed to deploy causing serious injury. Vehicle was parked at a stop sign when full impact occurred. There was 2 children in the rear seats and only a driver in the vehicle. There was none in the front passenger seat and only the airbag in the steering column deployed and the passenger seat airbag deployed. Airbags did not protect the children nor the driver in this impact.

Standing still or moving the coolant Temp gauge goes up to H and turns Red, when this happens the vehicle instantly decelerates to approximately 5 mph. While on brake the car moves then and than immediately stops and I am unable to step on gas, when this happens i have to shut down and restart. This is extremely hazardous and can cause a collision when it slows down or shuts off. The dealer can not duplicate the problem. no warning prior to this happening.

A few months after purchase, my hazard lights came on while the vehicle was off and parked in my driveway. I couldn't get them to turn off until I disconnected the battery. I scheduled a diagnostic with the jeep dealership and before I could get it in, it started happening while I was driving it as well. I never know when it's going to happen. At the diagnostics appointment, they told me it's a problem with the electrical system but that they weren't sure exactly what is causing it. They offered to replace two parts at about $1,500 cost to me that "might" keep it from happening again. They wouldn't honor the warranty. When I reached out to Jeep directly, they told me it isn't covered. Since then it's gotten worse. The auto start/stop system doesn't work. Sometimes the hazard lights won't come on at all. I've been pulled over for driving with them on and I've been unable to turn them on when I needed them. I spoke with someone at Jeep again today because they have been on for that last 2.5 hours and I have to start my car periodically to keep the battery from dying, and was told I needed to take it to another dealership and pay for another diagnostic. I don't feel safe driving this car. I stopped at rest area recently and my hazards stuck on when I got back in the car. I disconnected the battery to reset it but it happened again as soon as the battery was reconnected. I had to drive on the highway with them on. I can't signal lane changes or turns and people get in front of me

While driving the "coolant temperature high" warning message occasionally pops up and it shows that the temperature is as high as it can go on the temperature meter. It will then shut my engine down and not allow me to resume driving until I completely turn my car off and back on again. After turning it back on, my coolant temperature always reads completely normal between 190-200 degrees Fahrenheit. This problem has occurred multiple times including while I have been on the interstate, in the middle of an intersection, and in heavy traffic. My safety has been severely put at risk multiple times as my car has stopped moving while I was in the process of turning in an intersection and risked being hit from behind and from the side. I have also been in heavy interstate traffic and have been unable to pull-over before my car fully stops moving which puts me at high risk of being hit. I have taken my car to the dealership to have it looked at and they ran diagnostics which showed that there has never been an issue with my coolant system. They have since done an electrical diagnostic as well with which they could not find an issue relating to the coolant system. They replaced my auxiliary battery as they believed it was bad and could have been the cause of my electrical issues and this seemed to cause the issue to go away for a month and a half, but then it started occurring again. The issue also occurs very spontaneously and I have not noticed any signs prior to the issue occurri

As I accelerate the car while driving or from a start motion the car occasionally kicks back (jerks), causing me to immediately slow down to avoid the car from not stopping. It has never shut off, but I am concerned that it will while in moving traffic…I have noticed that cars behind me have stopped suddenly when my car jerks….feels like the back wheels are not moving for seconds but enough to cause an accident.

The touch screen is de laminating. Jeep wouldn't repair under warranty since car has been 1 year old. The delamination causes a driving risks as it turn on by itself, turns heat and air cond. on, makes it impossible to turn heated seats and heated steering wheel off during summer, and has even called 911 3 times while driving. This is definitely a safety issue. It's distracts the driver as the desalination act as the pressure point to turn on and off different systems while you are driving. You can't just pull over and turn the screen off , once it starts acting up it continuously turns itself back on.

Car turned off suddenly after idling at red light. "High coolant temp" warning light and others flashed briefly in dashboard. We could not move or start the engine at all. After about 2 minutes the car was able to be turned off and on and was driving normally without any dash warning lights, and we could not figure out the reason for this. It has happened before while idling.

While stopped at a red light the vehicle just shut off would not start all the lights on the dash information were illuminated. After several minutes of sitting in traffic vehicle did start. Approximately 15 minutes later the same thing happened while driving in traffic.was sitting in moving traffic very dangerous.Drove directly to Jeep Dealer luckily I have a extended warranty but I had to pay a 100.00 deductible out of my pocket. And was told by Dealer that it is fixed a Hood sensor.

Vehicle has intermittently turned itself off while driving, locks the brake, and will not restart for a few minutes. Causing a serious safety concern as its happened while driving down the interstate. I have taken it to two different repair shops that can not find a cause. Currently the Jeep will not turn all the way on saying electronic brake engaged, but will also not turn off saying the car is not in park.

What the dealer told me when I brought there for a recall! The my car need a new engine after they did that now they are saying is the transmission

The contact stated that while his wife was driving at various speeds in inclement weather, the check engine warning light illuminated and the message that FWD drive was deactivated message was displayed. The was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that a filter canister needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure and advised the contact the whenever the check engine warning light was illuminated, the FWD feature would deactivate as a standard procedure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The VIN was not available.

The component that is failing is the interior screen. It is glitching alot to the point I can't change the station or use the screen for assistance when backing in to parking spots. My safety was at risk when I was backing up then all of a sudden it started glitching. I brought it to the dealerships attention but I haven't been to my scheduled appointment yet to get the matter fixed. No, the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance or other representatives. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms that led up to the glitching issue with the screen. The glitching been happening for about a month now.

The touch screen stereo that also houses the back up camera is going out at only 40,000 miles. This controls many functions and randomly stops working and works again. It first started one month ago but is not fully out. It will have lines through the screen then they go away on their own.

While driving vehicle, warning lights came on stating "Stop Safely Vehicle will shut off soon". There was no other indication of any issue with the vehicle. The engine then shut off in the middle of the road with no power steering or any other features. Safety was put at risk not being able to control vehicle while driving in the middle of the road. Vehicle restarted 10 minutes later with no issue. Warning light issue repeated itself a week later.

About late November 2022 I was driving on the drive free way and the I got a quick dashboard reading High coolant Temperature and the vehicle started slowing down, I push the gas pedal and the car, accelerate it. I truly thought I did not have any radiator fluid in the radiator so I put the gas station and brought radiator fluid and put it into the vehicle. In December 2022 I was coming from basketball practice in the evening with a cold evening and I had the heat up in the ventilation of both up to high and I got to a stop sign the car * at the stop sign. From that point it had to be towed to a dealership Feldman Chevrolet in Livonia Michigan after three days in the shop I was told that there was nothing wrong but the vehicle needed a new battery. I had no issue with the vehicle [XXX] summer of 2022 since the winter of 2023 the vehicle have stopped on me three times with the same high coolant temperature too high, showing up on the dashboard engine shut down momentarily after I put my foot on the gas pedal again. It continues to drive, I notice it only happens when my heater is on and my temperature is high and my fan is hot inside the vehicle the last time wise about March 7, 2023. Sometimes when the electronic stop start function turn the engine off at a stop light, the vehicle stalls and is difficult to restart. Additionally, the parking brake sometimes goes on during these episodes. This has happened five or six times.

The torque converter is bad and when driving on the highway it stopped my car and caused it to stop luckily I was able to get off the freeway before wreck could happen

Vehicle headlights work intermittently. Either will go out unexpectedly. Car has been to dealership. Problem not solved. Relays have been replaced, etc. There is a lengthy forum on this topic with this Jeep model; many others have this issue. This is a profound safety issue. When lights do not work, my daughter has been forced to pull off of road, exacerbating the safety issue. Please urge a recall on this matter

The contact stated that the low oil level warning light illuminated one and a half month after having an oil change performed. Engine light comes on with a warning saying "Stop soon, Vehicle may shut off". A few times that light does not come on but the vehicle applied brakes while driving (5mph) on the road. Felt as if it put the parking brake on by itself. Engine light is still on now constantly saying to pull over. Dealer checked it out and re-grounded some wires but issue is still happening.

Jeep compass immediately coolant overheat alert with no warning shutting off engine in the middle of driving. have to shut car off to restart right away and coolant level is fine. Has done this 3 times while driving once on highway. Driving 65 MPH on highway - car shut off, high coolant temperature alert on , coolant temperature gauge pegged to top - lasted one second at most. Car seemed to restart itself, alert went away, temperature gauge dropped to normal - car seemed fine. Had I stalled I would have been rear ended for SURE! This happened once before but I was stopped at a light - same scenario.

Over the past two days the engine on my 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk simply stopped and cut off as I was turning into intersections. Thankfully I was able to coast to the shoulder and put the Jeep into park to restart engine. This is such a dangerous issue, and I cannot even imagine it happening on a highway or merging lane going 65 mph. Scheduled an appointment for vehicle, and I noted that other Jeep Compass vehicles from 2018 had a recall due to cracked fuel pump issue, though it seems my particular VIN is not "part" of that recall. Maybe it needs to be. This is a very dangerous issue.

Did an oil change on 2018 jeep compass, within 500 miles I had to replace I’ve a quart of oil. When turning before, they car stalled and parking break engaged in the middle of the road. Had to put the car in neutral and start it. Once started the low oil light turned on and had lose of power. Have dealt with adding oil multiple times shortly after oil changes.

The auto start stop stopped working. My car overheated in May 2022 which I paid 900 dollars for repair. Also screen went out on Dec 2021. My car is in the shop now because it stopped on the freeway and the hot start/stop stops the car from moving.
