Defect. ON CERTAIN HEAVY DUTY TRUCK/TRACTORS EQUIPPED WITH SEARS ATLAS SERIES 35, 70, OR 80 DRIVER'S SEATS, WHEN THE SEATS ARE IN THEIR LOWEST, MOST REARWARD ADJUSTED POSITION, THEY MAY CHAFE THE SEAT BELT TETHER THAT CONNECTS FROM THE SEAT TO THE BACK OF THE CAB.

Risk. THIS CHAFING MAY EVENTUALLY CUT THROUGH THE TETHER, THUS WEAKENING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY IN A VEHICLE CRASH, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy. DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLES FOR SUSPECT SEAT CODES AND WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING 12" SEAT TETHERS WITH NEW 13.5" TETHERS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 7, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT INTERNATIONAL AT 1-800-448-7825.

Reading this record

No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Recall repairs are free for as long as the recall stands. Check whether a specific car still has open work at NHTSA's VIN lookup.
